Simplest way is to write the program to create anew thread to handle each client
when the ServerSocket accepts a new connection a new thread should be created and that will handle the client. The main threadshould go back to accept next client
while(true){
Soeket socket = serverSocket.acept();
new ClientHandler(socket).start(); /ClientHandler is the class that should be handling the communication with the client
}

Best way to connect mac clients through Lion Server to AD?
Ok, so here's what we are trying to set up for our school network. We currently have a 2003 server system hosting our PCs.
Authentication - through 2003 server AD
When client logs in:
Mac Client -------sends info to --------> Lion Server ----passed data through to-----> 2003 Server
2003 Server -----responds with authentication----> Lion Server ---applies profile management to client------> Mac Client
My thought is that Lion Server needs to connect to the 2003 server via the active directory setup in Users and Groups, but the clients should be connecting to the Lion server via LDAP3.
We can authenticate to the AD server directly from the clients or from the server, no issues there. Yet putting the Lion Server in "attached to another server" mode in Server Admin Tools doesn't Kerberize, even after giving proper permissions to the server via AD. I'm assuming that Kerberization needs to happen in order for Lion server to pass ther login data from the mac client to the 2003 server and vice versa, right?
Also, we would like to have the users' 2003 network user folders on the desktop automatically, or preferrably what they access when they go to Home. I noticed some options in Profile Manager as well as Workgroup Manager to make this happen. I assume that once the data between the 3 is working proerly, this will be close to a no-brainer.
So, advice is much appreciated here, first time setting up this type of hybrid system. Thanks!I appreciate all your help. I really do.
This is basically what I needed to know - You said,
"The audio out on a TV will source whatever input is associated with the current screen."
With my current macmini to TV setup - I have to have a separate audio line (apart from the dvi cable for video ) to the TV. I was not sure if that macmini audio line to the TV would transfer to the receiver. If it did not then I assumed (since the macmini only has one audio out line that I would have to split that audio line - one to the TV and one to the receiver ). That was my thinking anyway, but if whatever is on the screen will transport to the receiver then I should have no problem.
Thank you again for helping me think through this.

Connecting Java client to SSL server with existing certificates
I am currently trying to connect my Java client to an existing server application
written in C++. I have been provided the needed certificates (root.pem, server.pem,
and client.pem). My code simply creates a SSLSocket and then attempts to read
from it. Something goes wrong during the handshake process and I get a SSLHandshakeException. The certificates have been added to the keystore
I am using, and I do not know any other action to take.
Here is the debug output:

Error: Remote host closed connection during handshake
Thread-4, handling exception: javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Remote host closed connection during handshake(I am the original poster of this message, I had to create a new username though).
The original problem had to do with incompatibilities with the protocol and/or cipher suites
used. Now, the client and server perform most of the handshake process, but something
goes wrong as the server requests the client certificate. In other words, the server requires
mutual authentication, but for some reason it seems like my JSSE client won't send over
it's client certificate. I don't get any type of bad certificate exceptions, so I'm not sure
where the source of the error lies.

I recently set up a Lion Server to test it out as a home server but I seem to be running into a lot of issues. All computers are running OS X 10.7.2
What I'm attempting to accomplish:
I'm attempting to create a network test user with a remote home folder (on the server) and log in to that test users account from my macbook pro. I would like that account to use mobile sync to copy over documents and pictures whenever the user logs on and off. I would also like to be able to VPN into my server while out and about to screen share & share files. This test user is simply for testing purposes as of now, once I get it all working I want to set this same config up for my current local users.
What I've done:
I've configured the server to manage domain accounts, and given my server a static IP of 192.168.1.105. I configured it's hostname as a Internet hostname and registered that hostname with Dyndns.com pointing to my External IP address. I also set up my Linksys router with the DynDNS information so that it updates my Dyndns account with my external IP, and port forwarded every VPN port on Apple's list of ports. Server admin tools have been installed, DNS is turned on, and its configured as an Open Directory Master. My macbook pro's dns settings are configured so that it sends everything through the server, and the server is set up to forward all inquries out of my router that it isnt authoritative for. The MBP is bound to the Open Directory and is allowing network accounts to log in. I set up a shared folder on the server that can be used as a home folder.
Issues I've run into:
My network account (Test user) cant log in on my MBP unless it creates a local home folder, which I dont want it to do (i want it to use the shared folder i set up on the server). When I attempt to log in I either get an error, or it shakes, not allowing it to log in. I cannot get the VPN to work, but I'm not too worried about it at this point, I'd rather get the users up and running first. I've spent a ton of time attempting to figure this out and its getting very frustrating. I followed the setup guide provided by wegotserved.com and anandtech.com. If anyone has any suggestions, or see's something I'm doing wrong I appreciate any input.Yeah, I can log into the server using the OD account I created called test user just fine, I just cant get on my wireless client (macbook pro) with the OD test user account.

VPN to Mountain Lion Server issues
Hi,
I checked a lot of VPN threads here today, but I wasn't able to find a solution for my problem just now. I try to connect by VPN to my Mountain Lion Server, but I get an error message that the VPN server is not responding. I get this message from iPhone and Mac. The Mountain Lion Server is a new installation, no upgrade from an older server.
Some informations on my setup:
I installed the server with a hostname like myserver.mycompany.com and option 3 (internet access), as I want to use it for email at a later stage. All services are working fine (except VPN). DNS is active, but basically it only contains the adress myserver.mycompany.com and forwards everything else to our router.
I changed the DNS settings of our domain ( hosted by an ISP - so not in the local DNS ! ). I created a subdomain vpn.mycompany.com which points to the static IP of our router.
In the router I opened the UDP ports 500, 1701 and 4500, and for 1701 i made the same thing for TCP (I found this in a forum, but I think this is not necessary?), the ports are pointing to the ip of the os x server.
In OS X Server I started VPN for L2TP using the vpn.mycompany.com hostname, and a shared secret.
When I try to connect with I client from outside I try to connect using L2TP via vpn.mycompany.com using the shared secred and user-id and password. The user-id is created in OS X Mountain Lion server and is configured to use VPN service. When trying to connect I get the error message "L2TP-VPN server is not repsonding...".
In the log file of the server I see some entries for each connect:
Oct 10 20:21:45 myserver.mycompany.com racoon[13873]: Connecting.
Oct 10 20:21:45 myserver.mycompany.com racoon[13873]: IPSec Phase1 started (Initiated by peer).

No more entries in log file now. Anyone any ideas what's going wrong. Might there be a problem as I use another servername outside as inside (vpn... instead of myserver...)?
Thanks!Solved, first of all we tested to establish the VPN connection locally by adding the ip address of the server to /etc/hosts for vpn.mycompany.com. The VPN connected without problems then, so it was clear that it is a firewall/router problem, and not a server problem.
After that we studied some more documentations and found that we don't have to open port 50, but ip protocoll 50 (ESP) on the firewall. After that was done, the connection was working from the internet as well. -
Server App can't connect to a Mountain Lion server
Hi,
I installed OS X Mountain Lion Server (2.2.1) on a 2012 Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.4. I am able to access all the options using the Server.app on the Mini. Then I installed the Server.app (2.2.1) on a 2010 MacBook Pro running 10.8.4. On trying to configure the Server options on the Mac Mini from the MacBook Pro by providing the correct Mac Mini admin credentials, the password is not validated correctly. This happens when both the systems are on the same network or on different networks.
I am certain that the username / password provided is correct, since using the same credentials I can successfully remote into the Mac Mini using Apple Remote Desktop (3.6.1) when both the systems are on the same network or on different networks.
My situation supersedes the resolution provided in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3960?locale=en_US. Note that the command sudo launchctl list | grep -q com.apple.servermgrd && echo loaded || echo not loaded returns loaded on the Mac Mini.
Please help!I am having exactly the same setup and exactly the same problem - nevertheless I would like to add some more information in order to hopefully find / get help from other readers in here.
I am using DynDNS - not a dedicated domain. I do not utilize an AirPort Extreme for port forwarding and else. All the necessary port forwardings were triple checked!
- First of all "Apple Remote Desktop" is able to connect to my server over the internet (screen sharing) and locally in my LAN. No troubles here.
- My iOS devices can connect using various VNC clients without any troubles.
- VNC connections started within Safari (MacBook Pro) do work very well, too.
- All kinds of WebDAV connections are working like a charme.
- When connecting with "Server.app" from my MacBook Pro it asks if I would like to trust the self-signed certificate before I can enter name and password. After trusting that certificate it doesn't matter which account information I am entering: none is accepted. It does not make any difference if I am using a local user account or a user network account (both configured as being allowed to administer that server). "Server.app" does not accept any information provided.
I've been following the KB advice, too that c xavier mentioned. "servermgrd" is loaded!
For some odd yet unknown reason neither WAN nor LAN FTP login does work, too. It just gives me a time out, as already mentioned WebDAV is working fine.
Sorry I could not help You, c xavier! I just thought that some additional information could help... -
How can i connect windows(laptop) to lion server?
Hi..
We in our company use mac's as clients. We use Mac OSx 10.7 lion server. We have a lenovo laptop for general purpose. Now can we connect that laptop in network. So that can we remotely use mac screen sharing.Are you asking how to connect to FileSharing from the PC ?
Or are you asking about screensharing?
On Server
If file sharing, edit the SharePoint and make sure that
Windows File Sharing (SMB) is enabled
On the PC:
Map a network drive
\\10.0.0.1\Share
(your IP and the share name)
Make sure you check the box to use another account or user/password
It will then ask you to enter a password.
In general, the above should work.
There are some cases where it requires a few other tricks.
Good Luck -
Windows can't connect to shares on Lion Server
I can't connect any windows machines (XP, Vist, or 7) to a Mac Pro running Lion Server. When attempting to connect, the windows user is prompted for credentials, and nothing entered in this box works even the server admin account info, once entering account credentials, it comes back with NAMEOFWINDOWSCOMPUTER\USER as if it's trying to sign into a domain, which we don't have domains.
I can't seem to find anything relevent when searching...There are a couple things you can try:
1.\ go to the apple server, sys prefs, sharing, selct file sharing and then select option. from there make sure the both check boxes are selected. then select done.
2.\ while you are there, in the shared folders section, selct the folder you would like to share (or add if its not) and make sure the user is in the users pane that you want to share the folder with.
3.\ restart your windows machine to make sure it forgets any passwords you may have put in.
4.\ if it still doesnt ask for a user account go to map network drive. and select the option to put another username and password in. for the user name user SERVERNAME\username - ensure the servername is in CAPITAL letter...
hope this helps... -
How to reinstall on client from Lion Server Time Machine backup?
I have a Mac Mini running Lion Server and a black MacBook running Lion. I recently needed to to perform a format and reinstall of the MacBook, so I used the MacBook's Recovery HD partition and reinstalled Lion. I then went back to Recovery HD to reinstall apps from my Time Machine backup' which is managed by the Lion Server Mac Mini. On first attempt, I saw the right files, but in the process it hung. I recently tried to do it again, and now it claims that there are no backups found.
My suspicion is that as this is a Lion Server managed backup, it bundles the server backup and the MacBook backup in the same bundle. Revovery HD looks for the latest compete bundle, then finds the matching backup for the MacBook. However, if the Mini is continuing backups of its own, the more recent bundle backups only have mini info, not the MackBook, hence they "disappeared".
I can see older backups when I look at the backup drive, so I suspect that my MacBook files are still there.
Any suggestions on how to recover and get my MacBook files reinstalled? I'm new to this home server thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
JasonOne partition 2.5TB will be my new Time Machine Backups and the other 2.5TB for iTunes Library so I never have to worry about this again.
Your worry now is what will you do when the single hard drive containing both your library and its backup makes a screeching sound one day and is toast, or get stolen?
from a YouTube video
Uh-oh, those unspecific and sometimes incorrect YouTube videos. I dislike those things. I watched one once and some kid droned on in a barely audible monotone for about 5 minutes to show how to do something to which I could have typed instructions in two sentences.

Mac OS X Server v10.7 does not show the ethernet link aggregated interface i created. Does Lion server support ethernet link aggregated interfaces?
Thanks for responding Cold--
Hardware: Mac Pro 3.0 GHZ quad core xeon
I read the link but it still does not explain why the aggregated dual ethernet interface does not show up in the Network tab of the hardware section Lion Server. I was able to see it on the network and looks to be using a single static IP that I assigned. My concern was that is this supported and will it allow for failover and double performance of the single network interface.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again! -
Problem connecting Oracle client 11g to server 11g
I'm trying to connect a second computer to the Oracle Server computer with a client. I have a listener running, and correct settings for the net manager. The error that I get is:

We need to see your tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files on your client computer.
We need to see the results of
lsnrctl statusfrom the database server
In addition to the following boilerplate comments, I've been doing a series of articles on tns connection issues at edstevensdba.wordpress.com
=================================
A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a +server side only+ process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It +creates+ the connection. It doesn't +sustain+ the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Additional notes on the listener: One listener is capable of listening on multiple ports. But please notice that it is the *listener* using these ports, not the database instance. You can't bind a specific listener port to a specific db instance. Similarly, one listener is capable of listnening on multiple IP addresses (in the case of a server with multiple NICs) But just like the port, you can't bind a specific ip address to a specific db instance.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a +client side+ issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
{code}
larry =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = curley)
{code}
Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
{code}
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larry
{code}
tns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Finding it, tns sends a request through the normal network stack to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the standard networking process delivers the message to port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, the listener will spawn a server process to act as the intermediary between your client and the database instance. Communication to the server process will be on a randomly selected available port. At that point the listener is out of the process and continues to user port 1521 to await other connection requests.
What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

Install Lion Client over Lion server?
I have a 2011 Mini server version of Lion but would prefer to be using the client version, which I also own. Is it possible to install client in place of the server version? Both are 10.7.2.
Cheers,
Andy.Hi,
Thanks for that. I'm a little confused when you write a clean install won't remove the server software?
Maybe I should take a different approach. The software seems fine as is, I'd read that simply not opening the server app would effectively mean I'd be more or less in client mode anyway. However I've had a few odd issues which may or may not be server related.
Mail keeps asking for all my passwords. This isn't much of a problem as I have a Macbook which I use for most internet related things. (server Mini bought for recording music) but one of my music apps won't allow me to save it's keyfile, I have to input the unlock key every time I open it with a message to the effect that I need to unlock the app and save the keyfile within an admin account. That confused me since there's only one account I've made on it and I would assume that thats an admin account?
Sorry for the slight deviation in question but I've googled a good few hours and found scant information to help hence the idea that if I loaded client these issues wouldn't be present.
Cheers,
Andy. -
How to connect several clients to a server?
Hi, i'm currently developing a client server based application. The problem i'm facing now is that i can only add one client. But i want to add every client that connects to the server. Do i need to assign each input and output stream to each connected clients?how do i do that? and will it be possible to add the connected client's name to a JList?
Thanks in advance.You need multithreaded server.

How to dynamically connect Extend client to proxy server?
Hi,
Is it possible to do programmatically? My client should decide at run time to which node it will connect.
Thanks, Denis.Hi Denis,
Yes you can do this, you need to write an implementation of com.tangosol.net.AddressProvider which provides your client with the InetSocketAddress it should connect to. Your implementation of AddressProvider can then work out the end-point however it likes. You configure your remote-cache-scheme or remote-invocation-scheme to use the Addressprovider instead of putting in socket-address entries.
E.G. instead of this...
<tcp-initiator>
<remote-addresses>
<socket-address>
<address>192.456.789</address>
<port>10000</port>
</socket-address>
</remote-addresses>
</tcp-initiator>you do this...
<tcp-initiator>
<remote-addresses>
<address-provider>
<class-name>com.jk.MyAddressProvider<class-name>
<address-provider>
</remote-addresses>
</tcp-initiator>If you need to parameterise your AddressProvider you can add init-param entries to the config in the usual way.

Connecting Ubuntu client to Yosemite server VPN
i have searched for info on this and all I have found are other unanswered questions and links to non OSX server solutions. Surely connecting a Ubuntu PC to an apple network via VPN is commonplace? Not often you still find the Mac vs the rest of the world problem nowdays. Thanks, Alex
Hello. Apologies for bumping this question but there are quite a few unanswered questions on the internet relating to this. I seems illogical to me that it is not straightforward to link a Linux machine to an OS X server network remotely? Surely this is relatively easy and I have got the wrong end of the stick somewhere? Thanks for your input. Alex
