Connecting Sony Camcorder to Powerbook

I connected my Sony Camcorder's USB into my laptop and my laptop doesn't it find it when i try to import it to iMovie.
Should a new hardrive show up when i connect it to the USB like how the iPod's are connected?

It's my understanding that iMovie only imports via Firewire ports, and only DV format - not formats on DVD or hard drive cameras via USB.

  • Cannot connect SONY camcorder to MAC

Hi. read some of the discussions re this but need different details. My camcorder is a SONY HDR-HCE. It says in manual that I need to connect using an i.Link cable. Does the iMac have an i.Link cable port? Where is it? When I use my USB it doesn't work on videos and I can't see a firewire port on the camcorder. HELP!!!

Ok, I bought a firewire cable and connected my camcorder. When I open iMovie it says that the camera is connected. I can play the video using the controls on iMovie but it only shows on the camcorder screen, not iMovie screen which remains blank. How do I fix this?

  • Connecting sony camcorder to imac

Hi, new to imac ( not even 3weeks yet!) loving it, but I now want to move on to do some more stuff- I assume I can connect my old Sony mini DV cam corder to the imac via firewire? the Sony's model is DCR-pc101e it has a small firewire look port under the flap - but what sort of cable do I use to connect the the 2? I'm new to firewire - I'm kinda guessing it's like usb? mini micro standard etc?
Also, and perhaps more to the point, will the imac recognise the camcorder? or will I need extra software to import video's?

Apple says that virtually all miniDV tape video cams are compatible with iMovie - but you will need to connect via Firewire. USB will not work. You need a Firewire cable which you can get from the standard suppliers like Belkin. I assume you have a late model iMac which has only a Firewire 800 port so make sure you get the proper cable.
Once you have the camera connected to the iMac, start up iMovie, put your camera on play and then most likely the video import screen will show up. If not, then click on the little camera icon on the lower left side of the iMovie window. You should be able to control your camera from the video import screen.

  • Connecting Sony CAMCORDER via USB

I am trying to connect my sony DCR-PC350 camcorder to my iMac Core duo. The iMac does not recognise it, my OS version is 10.4.4. Any advide?

If you're trying to capture video, try the Firewire port rather than USB. iMovie (and Final Cut Pro and Express) won't capture through USB.

  • Connecting Sony Camcorder to MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and I have a Sony Handycam DCR HC38. How do I connect the 2 when there is no Firewire cable on the new computer? Someone please help, it's making me crazy!

    Hi
As Meg the Dog writes - just to clarify.
    • You need a new Cable - the one delivered with Your Camera is an USB-cable
and it doesn't work with iMovie.
    • You need a 4-pin -> FW-800 cable (see what port Your Mac has so that it matches)

  • Connecting sony camcorder to macbook

how do i connect my sony handycam HDR-HC5 to my macbook? i purchased a firewire cable, and thought i plugged it in correctly, but nothing is happening. thanks

When you start up iMovie, and the first dialog box appears that gives you the option to create a new movie, to name it and where. Underneath is the disclosing arrow named Video format. Click on this and choose HDV 1080i, then see if this imports it.
If not and because your not sure what format you recorded in try the other three or four options.
BTW, in the iMovie forum, some have been having problems with this camera and your not alone.

  • Sony Camcorder DCR DVD

Hi, I recently bought intel iMac and was trying to connect sony camcorder DCR DVD201E via USB cable, but was unsuccessful. I have tried several options, but nothing seems to work.
Does anyone know how it works ?
Secondly, I noticed that you can't insert the 8mm Disc? Did any one else faced the same problem ?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi kakao;
    Welcome to discussions!
If you have "just recently" purchased this camera-see if you can return it ifyou are serious about editing with iMovie. You need a DV camera that has a firewire-not USB.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see Sony camcorder in iMovie anymore. It still works on MacBook, so nothing wrong with camera or connections.

After upgrading to Mavericks my iMac does not see my Sony camcorder anymore. I tried the new iMovie as well as the old version 9.0.9, which is still in Applications. I checked the camcorder and connections in iMovie on my MacBook (not upgraded) and that still functions properly, so the problem does not seem to be in iMovie, old or new, or in camcorder and connection.
Anybody with the same problem or a solution?
    Thanks mbkom

  • Connecting Sony Mini-DV camcorder to Mac..

I have a Sony Mini-DV camcorder that I'm trying to connect to my Mac so I can save some video i've taken. The Camcorder is about 5 years old. The only output ports it has are: a really small USB, a slightly larger square looking port that says
i DV under it, and the old yellow audio/video out. I connected the camcorder via a mini usb converter to one of the regular usb ports on the back of my mac and nothing happens. It doesn't even recognize that something has been plugged in... Is there anything I can do to connect this camcorder to my Mac???

    Hi
    A. As Lennart writes but there are in some cases two FW-Cables depending
on how the FW-port looks on Your Mac
    either a
    • 4-pi to 6-pin FireWire Cable - or -
    • 4-pi to FW-800 connector FW-Cable
Some new Macs only have the FW-800 port eg MacBook-Pro
    B. On some Cameras You need to look into the Camera menu and set DV-out
so the Camera port gets active.

i am having trouble with downloading videos from my Sony HDR-XR160 video camera. iMovie doesnt open up when i connect the camcorder. any suggesions?

Looking up your camera online, I found it is capable of 1920 x 1080 Full HD 60p Recording. It's the 60p (60 frames per second Progressive) that's the problem I think. iMovie '11 will do 60i (Interlaced). You might need to convert it from the format the camera currently uses into another format to get it into iMovie. Read more about it on this link here: How to import 60p footage From that message thread comes the recommendation to use ClipWrap to convert the camera's video clips now that they are in 60p:

Use ClipWrap to rewrap to QuickTime. Import the files. Edit in either 59.94 or 29.97. The latter if you want to use the high frame rate for slomo

  • I have 10.5.8 macbook with a firewire and want to connect to my Sony Camcorder 2005 iLINK.  What adapters do I need?

I have 10.5.8 macbook with firewire and want to connect to my sony camcorder 2005 iLink.  I believe they are both 4 pin and need male connecters.  Can anyone help me?

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info, then select Firewire from the left hand column of the System Profiler.  If it says "Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec" then this is the cable you need http://www.amazon.com/Cmple-IEEE-1394-FireWire-iLink-Cable/dp/B00403TH0C/ref=sr_ 1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1311376173&sr=1-8
If it says "Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" then post that back here.

  • When connecting Sony HDD camcorder to IMAC, it launches Iphoto not Imovie

  • Can you connect a sony camcorder to a mac to edit the video

Yes, that is precisely what iMovie is for, but which camera, what version of iMovie do you have, and what version of OS X?

  • After connecting my Sony camcorder to imac (Snow Leopard) to import a video the import window does not open. I have imported videos from the sam camcorder successfully before. What could have happened? Puzzled)

After connecting my Sony camcorder to Imac (Snow Leopard) to import a video to imovie 09 the import window does not open. In the past I have successfully imported videos from the same camcorder. What could have happened? Puzzled

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.
