Connecting SRW2048s over multimode fiber

OK... I'm a fiber / optical networking newbie so I apologize well in advance if my vocabulary is way off in this post... but here goes...
I wanted to upgrade our old 10/100 cisco switches (Catalyst 3500) to something gigabit so I bought some SRW2048s.  I'm trying to connect them over our existing multimode fiber (terminated in ST connectors) but they won't link.  I bought MGBSX1s to accomplish this task and some LC-ST fiber cable to make the connection.  I think I have the ST connections right... on one end it's red/black (for Tx/Rx) for the two ST connectors, and on the other end it's black/red (Rx/Tx).  Is there anything I need to do to the switch to make it work right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

it's amazing what a little research into a problem can do...
"Autonegotiation (formerly NWay) is an Ethernet procedure..."
looky there... an ethernet procedure probably won't help fiber optic connections....

  • Connecting two SRW2048 switches over multimode fiber

I've bought several SRW2048 switches to upgrade our old 10/100 switches, but I can't get them to connect over my multimode fiber.  I bought some MGBSX1 SFP GBICs and LC-ST fiber cables to connect to the fiber runs, but the two won't talk to each other... any ideas?  I'm pretty sure I have the ST connectors set up right... on one switch it goes red/black (Tx/Rx) and on the other end it's black/red (Rx/Tx).  This is my first time trying to upgrade fiber equipment so my vocab may not be exact... any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

Sorry, I'm just now getting back to this issue...  I turned off the auto-negotiated speeds on the ports connecting miniGBIC to miniGBIC, but I'm still getting broadcast storms on the network and I think it's slowing things down...  All I did was plug in all the switches and make the auto-negotiated speed change...
I don't know anything about VLANs and port trunks... I didn't change any of those settings... Could that be part of the problem?  I have 7 SRW2048s connecting to each other in a cascade(?) and could the fact that they're all on the default VLAN1 without any changes to the trunking be the issue?

  • 10GE -LR over multimode

    Hello team!
Is it possible that the SFP-10G-LR will work with multimode fiber?
I totaly understand that this actualy depends on cable type and lenght, but I do not have this information right now.
So, if someone have succes or bad story I am happy to listen.

It's very unlikely this would work over any but the very shortest distances. The transmission characteristics of multimode fiber are not properly suited to the coherent light of a single mode laser.

  • Database connection loosed over night

    Hi,
I am testing a J2EE application on Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 8.2 (build b06-fcs).
The application uses JNDI, which uses a connection pool to access a MySQL database. The deployment of the applications .ear file works fine, and the connection of the bean works correctly the rest of the day. But on the next day when I try to use the bean from the client application, I get a Local Transport Exception:

Does anybody have any ideas what causes this "overnight" problem?
    Thanks in advance,

Appserver pools DB connections and your connection expires over night. You should try setting "Connection Validation" checkbox and validate it against some existing table in your DB, see:
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4712/6n6rit5is?a=view
If this doesn't help you might want to try changing your application to reconnect upon failure. Last thing to try would be plugging in different mysql JDBC driver.

  • TNSNames - Connect database over HTTP protocol - Webservices

    Hi,
I just want to know whether I can connect oracle over HTTP protocol instead of TCP/IP protocol in TNSNames.ORA. I'm trying to connect Oracle database which is out of network (over internet). Is this possible? If yes, how secure it is? Can I use HTTPS for secure connection?
Here is some background, previously we had two different databases within our network and we used database link to connect to the other database. Now, the database is going out of our network (seperated as different company). And we still need to use that database and we don't want to connect to database via NAT IP address.
We are looking for some solution probably HTTP protocol connection in TNSNames.ORA (if possible) or webservices. Regarding webservices in Oracle, I can see some documents that uses UTL_DBWS and Oracle XML DB to handle this. I'm not sure how to expose webservice from Oracle 10g database. Also, how secure is the Oracle webservice?
    Appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks
    Kumar

Once more, missleading advices. It is not me who pursues the 'Hollier than thou' attitude, it is you who put yourself in the target.
You cannot connect directly to Oracle using the HTTP
protocol or HTTPS protocol.Yes you can, OraDAV has been available since Oracle 8i, as I have previously mentioned this was the first use of the Listener as an application server and supports protocols such as http and ftp. This feature is not widespreaded used because either people don't know about it or becuase it is easier to manage a regular Application Server. This was used about 6 or 7 years ago for the iFS feature. Today the OraDAV protocol is used for the Oracle Portal application to easy the life of non-technical people who contribute with contents to the portal. One more platform where OraDAV is used is in the Oracle XE, it supports the XE web administrator console and is the point of access of APEX.
If you could this would have been documented.
Did you read the documentation?Have you? It would not be the first time you recommend something you don't do.

Is there something I should check? It says connected to wifi, wifi is fine.....confused.

  • ASA 5505 speed reduction when connected to a Planet fiber converter

    Hi!
We have many customers running ASA 5505, and a number of them are running 100 Mbit connections. This normally works fine. But recently, our ISP has started setting up all new fiber connections using a Planet fiber to RJ converter (Before they used Cisco switches), and with those, the locations only get around 50-60 Mbit. We have done all the testing - force port speed and duplex settings, test with a PC directly connected to the converter etc. And the connection allways runs 100 Mbit. And the ASA's themselves also run 100 Mbit when connected to anything else than the Planet converter. We have for now circumvented the problem by placing a simple L2 switch between the converter and the ASA's, but this is not an ideal solution as it adds another single point of failure element etc.
    Any ideas?

The Express units can extend wireless on the TC or each other.. but they cannot extend wireless on the Asus anyway..
So the setup is Asus--TC (that has to be ethernet) The TC in bridge mode.
Then TC -- express can be done by ethernet in roaming mode as bob listed above or extend wireless.
I am guessing.. what model are the express units.. they are older Gen1 N model ??
IMHO the TC is simply no longer viable.. replace it with one express as the AP and extend it with the other Express.. see if that works better.
But I would be trying to use the wireless just from the AC66U.
I would also force the Asus back to 20mhz on the 2.4ghz band.. so you can provide adequate channel separation.. 40mhz wireless on 2.4ghz works poorly anyway because you have too much wifi .. there is very limited number of non-overlapping channels.. ie 3. 11, 6 and 1.

No, no no, not RADIUS.  It's RADIOS.    You either have to use WPA2/AES or open/no authentication.

  • Extending SAN&LAN over dark fiber (DWDM)?

Hi, sorry for my English, but I hope you understand me, and I understand your answers:)
We are in the process of adding new data center (DC2), which will be geographically located about 20 km from our existing data center (DC1). Between them laid dark fiber (two fibers). We need a solution for the LAN(layer 2) and SAN(native FC) extension ...
Solution is to see me use two passive EWDM-MUX8 at both ends of dark fiber with DWDM transceivers on the equipment in the DC1 & DC2.
For Ethernet, we propose to use Cisco 10GBASE DWDM X2 Modules (p/n:DWDM-X2-xx.xx =) - equipment at both ends supports these modules.
For FC we propose to use DWDM SFP Modules for Cisco ONS Family (p/n:ONS-SC-4G-xx.x =).
SAN equipment at both ends - Cisco MDS 9124 (p/n:DS-C9124AP-K9).
But I'm not entirely sure of the correctness of this decision, especially in SAN extension.
    Is this workable solution?
Does the Cisco MDS 9124 supports this transceivers (ONS-SC-4G-xx.x=)?
There are other potential pitfalls are not visible to me?
In advance, thanks for the advice.

For ethernet, your decision is correct.
For SAN, things get a little dicey. The MDS 9124 doesn't support the ONS transcievers, and the FC 4G LH transciever is limited in distance to about 10 km.
If it were me, I would do things a little differently. I would put a Nexus 5000 series at each end of your dark fiber, with a 20 GB etherchannel trunk between them. Each nexus would then be connected to your data center ethernet network via 10 gig ethernet, and to your MDS's via 2/4/8 gig FC. The nexus could then be set up such that FC traffic destined for the other end will be encapsulated in ethernet, sent over the link, unencapsulated at the other end, and sent to the appropriate FC host.
It's relatively easy, simple to operate, and no mucking around with DWDM/CWDM, which can be a very complex animal.

  • Extending POTS over a fiber mux

    Guys,
I know this is probably way below what the ONS product line can do, but I have the need to extend some POTS lines over fiber and am thinking some TDM/DWDM method would be the cheapest (rather than routers doing dial-peers between FXOs/FXSs. Are there any Cisco products that could do this down-and-dirty?
    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • Trying to conect 2 sge200 series swiches over gbit /fiber

Hello            I have a stack of 6 switches and I want to add another over the gbit connector using fiber.
I already connected but I can acces the network from the new switch.
I don't have any issues on my Stack all resources are available
Do I need to do some special setup or connection to enable this?
Can be stacked like the others? I already usen the 2 stacking port can i Add another switch?
    Thanks,

    Thanks for your reply,
My unit is already using ports 24,48 can I connect another stack on 23 or 47 (23,47 are the same of ge3,ge4?).
or do I need to daisychain with another gbit using port GE2,GE1 ?

  • Lost Connection on a new Fiber sytem.

I recently moved into a new home that has a fiber connection. I had internet service connected on Friday and confrimed the connection by hardwiring the computer and checking for service. I then installed the Linksys with the installation CD in the package and had no problem in doing so. The setup worked for nearly 24 hours and then I tried to connect to the internet and could not do so. I contacted my provider who offers no networking assistance and they said that the router took the username and password off of the computer and that it should be reinstalled on the computer. I tell them over and over that there is no internet connection to the router nor is there a connection when I hard wire the computer. Additionally, I had service for approximately 24 hours on two laptops before I lost it which tells me that I had everything right at one time. Also, I have now noticed that the internet light is not on on the router anymore. I know that I am completely ignorant when it comes to this type of stuff and was just wandering if anyone had any advice on the topic. I would really like to get it going as soon as possible. Thanks for any help that I may recieve.

as the internet light is not "ON" on the router...ensure that the connections between the modem and the router are firm..try changing the ethernet cable....also confirm whether the computer can go online with the direct connection to the modem.....if not, then it seems to be an isp issue.....

  • I can not see the PC I'm connected to over VPN in the MY Network tab.

    Hi,
I have set up my incoming connection for my VPN
on a Windows 8.1 PC.  I can then remotely log in with my Windows 7 laptop. The laptop establishes a connection and says that I have "ipv4 internet access."
The problem I'm having is that I can’t find the PC in my network. What am I missing? Is Windows 7 not compatible with Windows 8.1 over
a VPN? I have turned off my Norton's Firewall for a short period of time but this did not change anything. I have altered the IP range allocation for the incoming connection and this has helped to establish a stable connection.
Any ideas on why I can not see the PC I'm connected to, in the (MY
Network) tab, would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Hi Steve,
The main issue is the Windows 8.1 machine is not listed in the Windows 7 machine via VPN ,right ?
Please check the following settings in the network and sharing center:
1.Check these settings in the Advanced sharing settings
“Turn on network discovery” and “turn on file and print sharing”
2.Ping the destination machine both with the IP address and the UNC to have a check .

  • Connection of LC/APC fiber patch cords to Cisco Catalyst 6500 $ Cisco Access 3750 Switches

I have an LC/APC fiber patch cord infrastructure and I want to connect it to Cisco Catalyst 6500 & Cisco Access 3750 Switches. what type of transceiver should be used?
I read a note on Cisco website stating the following for Cisco SFP+ transceivers:
Note: "Only connections with patch cords with PC or UPC connectors are supported. Patch cords with APC connectors are not supported. All cables and cable assemblies used must be compliant with the standards specified in the standards section"

Thank you,  but my question is that I have a single mode fiber patch cord with LC/APC connector while cisco stating a note that only use LC/PC or LC/UPC type of connectors with SFP+ transceiver.
So what type of transceiver should I use to connect LC/APC patch cord to cisco switches?  Is there another type or SFP+ still can be used?
