Connecting through Router

Firstly, I am not a Mac user but my friend is. For some reason (after a trip) she is not able to connect to the internet through the same router she has been connecting with for over 2 years. I fixed a similar situation on my two PCs at home by ipconfig, changing settings, etc., etc. However, I have no idea where to start with the MacPro that she just bought... old one would not connect also. Can someone take me through the steps of insuring she has a gateway, etc. Thanks...

Hi Lyssa...
No luck thus far this morning. It's probably something very simple that I'm just not seeing or maybe even seeing through it all.
Understand please that there is not a connection setup on the new MacBook. I have tried to set up but not an Apple wiz I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly. When I try to open Network Preferences, it will not open.
I have run the XP wizard, unplugged all and reset, checked the NetGear site and the latest Firmware was 2007 which is already installed.
I'm just pulling my little bit of hair right now. I would think that I would need to start on the MacBook and go from there...

  • WRT150N v1.1: Can't connect through router, internet light isnt on

Recently there was a thunderstorm last week and it somehow shorted out my cable modem. (It was hooked up to a surge protector and still somehow got damaged..) The router seemed to be fine, however, after having replaced the modem, my desktop can't connect through to the internet nor my laptop on it's wifi. The internet only works when I direclty link the modem to my desktop/laptop.
I've tried unplugging the modem and router for 30 seconds then re-plugginging the modem, waiting for initialization, then booting up the router but i've found no luck in getting it working as it used to.. I searched up past posts, and the "Setting-Up a Linksys Router with Cable Internet Service" doesnt say what to do if the light for internet doesnt turn on.
Another odd thing the router does is that, for some reason, the 3rd port for ethernet is lit up when theres no cable in the port. I checked to see if the light would work in other ports when it was connected and it shows to work fine, just with the additional 3rd port constantly on.
I'm not sure if it helps, but after hooking up the router I pinged it and it responded with:

Anyone know how I can get this router working again?

Hm, i didn't see any change in anything after completing the steps.. I just had my cable/internet provider service technician come over and take a look at it. Basically, he told me the modem is probably fried somewhere and said I should invest in getting a new router. Surge protectors are apparently just a pretty name for "a good way to blow out multiple expensive devices." So now I'm out to get a wrt160N

  • Connection through router to air card

I have replaced a crossover cable with a WRT54G router.  Before I could connect to the internet on my desktop through the crossover cable and my notebook computer which has a Verizon PC Express Air Card installed.
With the router replacing the cable I can communicate fine between the desktop and notebook except I cannot get internet access on the desktop now.
Is there a way I can do this with this router?
    Jeff

Sorry, but this gets more confusing. I repeat my previous question: what exactly is your setup. I don't understand what this PC Express card should be. Is it a normal wireless 802.11b or 11g card? Or is it a 3G kind of thing that connects to your ISP?
If it is the latter, you must connect this card to a computer therefore the computer where it is connected must be setup for internet connection sharing and therefore this computer is your main gateway (router) for your LAN. There is no benefit using the WRT as router in this kind of setup. You set it up as describe in the other post with the computer with the internet connection card (set up for internet connection sharing) as 1st router and the WRT as 2nd router.
Please write exactly what ISP you have. With what device you access the ISP. Where this device is connected to (which ports). And where it goes from there. What you have configured on the computers for networking etc.
Please remember: the WRT is designed as broadband router. It is supposed to have its own internet connection through the internet port. This means the router connects to the internet and no computer in the network. This requires an internet connection where you have a modem with an ethernet jack to which the router can connect. If you don't have this but rather you must use a computer to connect to the internet because your modem/access card does not have a ethernet jack you must set it up differently. The router cannot steer internet traffic then because it does not have its own internet connection. The router can only steer traffic to his own internet connection (on the internet port).

  • Connection Through Router Is Not There

I had internet before and everything was fine. I had it connected through my router and it was also fine there, and it connected to my Vista lap top easily. no troubles whatsoever. We recently switched over to a new cable modem because the last one was old. Now, I can connect to the modem just using my computer but when I connect through the router i get a no connection, or limited activity setting, and my laptop will also no connect to the internet either. Do i need to reinstall my router? I do not see why I would need to because I am using the same computer as before, and I did not reboot it entirely or anything... So the same settings should be there. I cannot find my router disc anywhere, because I bought it about 4 years ago. It is a WRT54G

I think my problem is similar.  We started out with one desk top computer connecting through Comcast.  We bought a second computer moved the first to the up stairs so we bought the WRT54G Ver. 6 wireless router.  Both computers worked fine.  My husband recently purchased a laptop which is connecting through the router.  Now for some reason EVERY night at 9:00 p.m. on the dot neither the lap top or the upstairs computer will connect.  The downstairs desktop connected directly to Comcast will connect.  There are no issues with it at 9:00.  The inability to not connect last for a couple hours but it is every night at 9:00.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

  • Can't connect through router

I've had the same setup for two years, and everything was functioning fine until two days ago, but now I can't establish a wi-fi connection to a laptop or a connection to a desktop through a WRT54G router. I can connect to the network on the laptop, but a red X appears between the router and the internet icons in Network Sharing. When I open a browser on the desktop I receive "Server not found". A direct ethernet cable connection from the modem to both computers works fine.
I have power cycled all devices, I have reset the modem and the router, and I have tried different cables. I have also tried a second WRT54G router, but the same thing happens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I initial powered everything down, disconnecting all cables and cords on both routers and the modem. When that didn't work, I went into the modem's configuration page and hit the "Factory Reset" button. I also pressed the reset button on the back of both routers and went in and set it up again with the SSID I used before.
A wired connection from the modem to the router and from the router to my desktop returns a "Server Not Found" message when I open a browser. I think the fact that both a  wired connection from the modem to my laptop and from the modem to my desktop works indicate a router issue, but I can't be certain. You mentioned a configuration problem or a wifi issue, can you recommend a setting or place on the router's configuration page where I might be overlooking something? Thanks for the help.

  • Aiport Extreme cannot establish VPN connection through router must bypass

Hello - I own an Airport Extreme with the latest firmware update. I cannot connect to my work VPN through the Airport Extreme router. If I bypass the router and connect directly to my modem the VPN works fine. My VPN connections also work fine in any other internet hotspot. Any ideas Apple folks? I am using MacPro, and MacBook with bootcamp MacOSX and Windows XP Pro.

My workaround was taking the router back and getting a D-Link router.  Had it set up in 10 minutes with the VPN working, and staying connected.  I agree, there is something with the firmware on the router.  Good luck!

  • HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer - E809a - losing connection through router

We have an issue getting sustained response from our HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer - E809a which is linked to the wireless network by ethernet cable to a Netgear router.  We have tried stripping out the driver software & uninstalling the printer from the register, then re-installing through latest downloads from the HP site.  This works, especially if the device is set as the default printer, but within an hour the printer greys out in the device register and the default automatically resets to another printer.  Does anyone know why this printer is losing its connection?

Hi , I see by your post that the default printer keeps changing. I would be happy to help you.
Uncheck the SMTP setting in the print drivers, to see if that will help. From Devices and Printers, right click on the printer and left click on Printer Properties, click on the Ports tab, select Configure Port, uncheck SMTP and the printer should show online again. If the issue persists, please take a look at this document. • Isn't connecting through router

My Ipod touch has stopped comunicating with my router at home and I don't believe I've changed anything.  What can I check?

Thanks for all of your help, BUT, it's still not working.  I changed the IP on the B router, as suggested.  I changed the channel on the G router to 11.  They have different SSIDs.  B router connected to one of 4 LAN ports on G router to Internet port on the B..
The Palm will connect to the B router, but the B router isn't getting connected to the internet from the G. When I connect the B router, by itself and take the G completely offline, everything works fine, as it did before I bought the G.  I have seen some mention of DHCP settings?
My Norton Security has been giving me these messages, since I installed the G, too:
    Event Details:
    Actor: C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS DEFENDER\MSMPENG.EXE (PID=1100)
    Target: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccLgView.exe
    Action: Unauthorized access
    Reaction: Unauthorized access stopped

    Details: Intrusion: Invalid ICMP Code.
    Intruder: 3VD7321.

    Destination IP address: 192.168.1.1.
    ICMP Type: 8.

So, how do I get the G to allow internet to get to the B, plugged into one of the 4 LAN slots?

  • Is there a way to connect to Synology 212j NAS through router?

Since I upgraded from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to Mavericks OS X 10.9.1 I cannot connect my Synology 212j NAS via my router.
Diskstation/iMac Works fine when connected directly with ethernet cable. When connected via router with ethernet no connection is possible.
find.synology.com does not find the NAS, the synology assistant finds the NAS, can configure the IP address, but displays "connection failed" at the end of the process.
When wifi is enabled I can share files through finder. At no point am I able to display DSM configuration interface at 192.168.1.XXX:5000.
All firmware up to date, all devices reset and rebooted several times
The router lists the diskstation IP address in devices (in router configuration ui)
    Tried fixed IP and DHCP
    Tried port forwarding all services
MacBook Air with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 connects flawlessly to diskstation.
I think there is a problem with the way the IP addresses are being managed between Mavericks OS X and the router is there a way to work around this?

dont think so but I could be wrong
as it were I didn't like the build in audio so I connected some external logictech 2.1 speakers  but there
are times when I use headset so I bought this one
or any minijack splitter will work too so I have 2 things connected to the headset port works just fine

  • Can't connect to the internet through router

I have an HP Pavillian DV6 laptop, DSL connection through ATT, a Linksys wireless N router.  It had been working fine for abourt 7 months, Then all of a sudden I lost my network connection.  I clicked in the right hand corner to connect to the network & it was gone.  I have tried to re-run the software for the router & I get to where it wants to connect to the internet & it won't.  I have tried to log into the router to run the setup on the internet explorer page using 192.168.1.1 I now can find my network, I click connect, it says it is connected, but no internet.  I can connect to the internet if I plug the modem directly into my laptop, but once I connect from the modem to the router, it will not connect to the internet. I have been searching HP, CIsco, & even my maker of my wirelkess card to see if there were any driver updates.  My wireless card says it is up to date.  I tried to rest my BIOS, that didn't help either.  I'm stumped, & I've spent entirely too much time trying to figure this out with no success, PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Reset your router to defaults. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure the router so it would connect to the internet. Here's the procedure.
Reconfigure your wireless settings. Here's the procedure. I suggest you set your SSID to something unique. In addition, set your wireless security to WPA or WPA2. Don't use WEP as it is insecure.

It's an agaonizingly simple slution to a problem that i worked on for 12 hours straight. Hope it helps.

  • Connecting computer to tv for viewing EPIX,ETC.. but not through router?????

I need to start connecting computer to tv for viewing EPIX,ETC.. but not through router?????  I have a workroom with a TV but without cable connection, so I thought I would connect my computer to my TV.  I have an Acer Aspire laptop. and a 27" tv.  Please can anyone tell me how to get this to work.  I need something to watch while I am working.

I'm a little confused here as to what you're looking for. Are you simply trying to get Internet Connectivity to the computer using the best method possible or are you looking to try and send a signal to the TV without a cable connection going to it? The computer's Internet portion is easy if that is the case. If we can just get some additional information on that, we'll figure out how to approach it.
1: Does this Workroom have any Coaxial cabling going to it that can be connected back to the cabling the FiOS equipment is using?
2: Is Ethernet cabling available and running to the location of the router, or nearby?
3: Would Wireless work for you (as much as it is not ideal)?
4: Are you looking for a Physical connection to the network?
Now if what you're trying to accomplish is the actual connection between the Computer and the TV, check to see what inputs the TV supports (HDMI, VGA, DVI, Component, Composite) and see what the laptop supports (DisplayPort, VGA, HDMI, DVI). More than likely the Laptop would have a VGA connection along with the TV. Your best bet would be to honestly just connect a VGA Cable between the two machines, and then for audio, just use a 3.5" to Composite connection for the TV (Unless the TV has a 3.5" Input jack for the PC Input). If HDMI is available on both devices, by all means use that. Same with DVI as both give better picture quality over a VGA Cable.
If you can give us exact model numbers, that would help.

  • Updating firmware when I can't get an internet connection through the router

I am trying to update the firmware for WRT54G V8, but some of the instructions indicate I need to have the router connected and be connected to the internet.  I cannot get an internet connection through the router.  Can I upgrade firmware without being connected to the internet through the router.  (I have had this router for about a year and a half with no problems until now.)

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware without an Internet connection.
To upgrade the firmware, first download the new firmware into a computer that you can wire to your router.
Next, power down your entire network.
Then wire the computer to a LAN port on the router.
Disconnect all other wires from the router.
Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    Power up your computer.
Login to the router, and do the firmware upgrade  (it will likely take several minutes).
    Power down your entire network.
Next you need to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead. Report back with this problem
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

You might want to check following things:
Can you do a ping to the IP address you specified?
Is the data correct (ip, host, system number,...)?
Is the gateway with system number 00 running on the server?
Did you install the SAP RFC SDK dll's?
