Connecting thunderbolt to an older mac
I just purchased a thunderbolt display to use as a second display for an imac 27 inch which I purchased in August 2010.
I then realized that my old imac does not have a thunderbolt port.
Is there anyway I can still use the thunderbolt display with my old imac.
Thank you
not possible, the mac itself needs tb to use a tb monitor
you can buy the 27" led cinema instead

Hello all readers.
I'm in a dilemma, and your input and help will be appreciated.
So, in my household, we have 3 17" MBP we are usng. One has the Thunderbolt, but the other two has only a mini diplayPort (Unibody 2009 models).
I want to buy the 27 " Cinema display (Thuderbolt) but am wondering, if the display can be used for hooking up all the MBP?.
Also the fact that I work remotely from home (I'm in IT). Sometimes I'd like to hookup Windows Laptops (Sorry for the W word) to the screen also.
Does the new 27" Thunderbolt display support this?.
Thanks in advance for your inputs.
Cheers. You cannot make a TB monitor work on machines that lack a TB port.
So, unfortunately, that's a no to both of your questions - unless your Windows laptop has a TB port.
If you want 1 display that will work with both mDP and TB laptops, you need the 27 LED Cinema display, Apple still sells them from their refurbished store.

Thunderbolt card for older mac???
I have a user with a mac pro 2009 vintage. Has a mini display port. She just got a T-bolt monitor, but the MDP does not recognize it at all! Tried zapping the P-RAM and detecting displays in sys prefs/displays. No joy!
Tried the T-bolt monitor on another T-bolt mac and it works fine, so it's not the monitor.
Tried on yet another MDP only mac, and it does not work!!
I thought the video was supposed to work, but not the ports on the back if you plugged it into a MDP mac. NO?????
Does anyone know if there is a card that can be installed to create a T-bolt port on the mac pro 2009 model? I've not found anything yet on the net, so thought I'd ask!
User cannot afford to buy a new mac pro, unfortunately.
Thanks,
LisaCrud that is what I was afraid of! Why does Apple say it works then? Obviously it doesn't.
Thanks,
Lisa -
How to connect a new 27" LED Cinema Display to an older Mac Mini?
I bought a 27" LED Cinema Display (no Thunderbolt) but don't know how to connect it to my wife's older Mac Mini. I presume the Atlona adaptor is the solution, but I haven't bougt one yet.
robbert keegelThe cord attached to the display splits into a Mini DisplayPort, USB, and a MagSafe connector (for powering a laptop).
There is a separate connector on the back of the display for the AC power cord.

Is there a possibility to connect an external thunderbolt hard drive to my iMac (originally Leopard 10.5.8. upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3) via firewire to thunderbolt adapter, as my Mac doesn't have any thunderbolt, but has two firewire entries?
Would like to use the hard drive's big data stocking capacity of 8TB, but actual WD-HDDs of such a capacity have no more other entries than thunderbolt.Basically, no. The Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter does not work "in reverse," meaning, you have to have a Thunderbolt port on your Mac in order to use it.
Most Thunderbolt drives that I have seen also have a USB 3 port. You could use that, but on on an older Mac that does not have a USB 3 port you will be limited to USB 2 speeds. -
My Mac mini server has suddenly stopped seeing one or the other bluetooth devices, either the wireless keyboard or the mouse( both apple products) have tried new batteries, at first it was the mouse that stopped responding, but upon rebooting the computer now the keyboard will not respond and the mouse works. Both work fine on an older Mac mini that I hooked back up to check.
There is absolutely no reason why they should not bothe be able to connect to your WiFi network. The easiest place to start would be to reboot your router. Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in again. I would also restart both the iPad and the iPhone.

Neither my iphone nor my ipad would appear in itunes when i connect them to my mac. I have already upgraded my itunes to the latest version. I have no problem synching my ipod to itunes using the same mac though. Could it be because I am using an older mac? (Mac OS X version 10.4.11)?
You need to be using a Mac OS X version at least as new as the one given in the device's original system requirements.

I have a 4s iPhone which I loaded the new Os on last night. Now I can not connect to iTunes. A message comes up saying i need 10.6.3 or later but I am running 10.6.1 as I have an older Mac. Anyone have ideas how to get this to work?
Its not telling you to update your iPad, its telling you you need to download a recent version itunes on your computer.
Go here to download the newest version of iTunes.

hey guys, i downloaded the new software for my iphone and now cant connect to my itunes on my mac. its an older mac running 10.5.8
A .dmg installer for iTunes version 10.6.3.25 for Mac OS can be found at the following download page on the Apple website:
iTunes 10.6.3 -
Like I said I have older macs but a new phone and I know longer can get emails. It says cannot connect to the server
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Write down what it says about "version"and report that here. Now continue to "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
Check system requirements:
Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The main issue might be having too little RAM. Most computers run newer systems more smoothly with more RAM than Apple says is a "minimum" for running that system version
After installing 10.6.3 run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.

The new system should install on top of the old one. That said, things have been known to go wrong and it makes sense to do a backup before installing the new system. In fact you seem to care about your files and things so you need to always have a backup because one day you will wake up and you hard drive will be dead and everrything on it gone. Buy an external hard drive and start using Time Machine or something to back up. The other risk is when you install the new iTunes. It doesn't happen frequently given the millions of users but there are daily posts here from people who for some reason the installation wiped out their whole library. If you have a backup then there's nothing to worry about.
This is well within what many people can do at home. It's a matter of inserting an optical disc and clicking you way through menus. -
My iPhone I wanted to update music in MacBook Pro but I have never connected my iPhone to the Mac book and now older messages and apps would appear and music wouldn't play none of all 550 songs HELP
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes. -
Applying AirPort-/Wireless connectivity to older Macs
If you ask yourself how to make older machines able to connect to WiFi-Networks there is a quite simple solution, sparing you to mess with internal cards, usb-adapters and other stuff that costs a lot of money and does not really result in fast connections.
surprisingly, the most simple and most effective way to add wireless connectivity to older macs is to buy an airport express station. Configure it as an extension to an existing network and connect it via ethernet cable to the "old" computer. i costs less than any internal card, you have a much faster connection and you don't need to mess with 3rd party drivers. I tried this on old G4 and G5 Macs and it worked brilliant.
i hope this is helpful to youThis will work with non-Airport capable G3 iMacs too

Using GRaid Thunderbolt drive with older, non-thunderbolt mac.
I have a GRaid 4TB thunderbolt external drive. Can I use that with an older mac that doesn't have thunderbolt if I have a thunderbolt to firewire adapter?
It won't work. No adapter exists at the moment. At this point, a Thunderbolt display needs a Thunderbolt signal sent from a Thunderbolt compatible device.
MAYBE you can plug the older MBP into a Thunderbolt peripheral (like the Promise Pegasus RAID disk), then plug the Thunderbolt display into the Promise...but that seems like an overly expensive work-around. -
Connecting Older Mac to USB printer
Is it possible to use a newer USB inkjet printer with older Macs with the Apple serial port?
I've seen USB-serial adapters but they seem to be directed at those who want to use older serial devices with newer Macs.
TIA for any help here.
