Connecting to 802.11a AP using WPA security - no go

I have an AP that is set to 802.11a (5GHz) using WPA security and is set to hide its SSID. My iMac is connecting to this AP without any problems whatever frequency i set on AP, hide/show SSID. The problem is - Macbook does not show this AP in AP list when requested, if i select other and enter correct settings (ssid and WPA passkey) it says - connection timed out, AP does not show any signs that something even tried to connect to AP.
the only resort is to use 802.11g when i can connect to AP without any problems.
in Network utilities it shoes that it supports 802.11a/b/g/n
hope i gave enough details.
later today i will try to set WPA2 instead of WPA, also will try to set no security settings at all.
any thoughts how to force it to connect to 5GHz AP?
edit:
forgot to say why i want to switch to 5GHz - the problem is - lately many 2.4GHz b/g APs popped up in neighborhood and started to cause latency/interference as some manage to follow me over frequencies i set up.

ok, setting to WPA2 solved the issue, because still, with WPA configuration i was not able to connect. allowing TKIP and WPA2 allowed macbook to connect. Also iMac changed the settings to WPA2 and it didn't matter that it had correct settings fot WPA.
weird.
maybe someone could point out how to set these things explicitly, so i can choose what settings are in use.

  • Force MacBook Air 10.5.8 to connect to 802.11a

    Hi,
Is there a way to force my MBA to connect to an 802.11a AP?
I am troubleshooting an MBA wireless connection problem. As such I would like to try & force it to connect via an 802.11a AP, since 802.11a is less susceptible to interference. While troubleshooting I have located & begun using “Airport Radar” and “AirGrab WiFi Radar”, which provide more useful information than the Airport icon.
Yesterday, my MBA connected to an AP which was about 100 feet away. And it connected to it via 802.11b/g. The connection was poor, in that it would periodically drop the connection. I turned off Airport & turned it back on. Then it connected to an AP located by myself, which was about 15 feet away. And, it connected via 802.11a. This stayed connected without problems for at least two hours. I verified this via my Cisco WCS "AP Association History".
Thanks for any help anyone may provide. While I have experience with Fedora & Windows, I'm still learning MBA.

    Thank you for the reply.
I do not want to change the configuration of my Cisco Access Point to exclusively use 802.11.a. I have a mixed environment of Windows & MAC client laptops. I have a few MBA's that seem to have a problem with wireless connection. They have reported weak signal, slow response, etc. I've set up an MBA at my desk, & monitored its connection. I have monitored it using "Airport Radar" and "AirGrab WiFi Radar" on the MBA. And, I have monitored my MBA connection from the standpoint of my Cisco wireless network using Cisco's Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) and Cisco's Wireless Control System "WCS". It was from the perspective of my WCS that I discovered my MBA had connected via 2.4GHZ to an AP that is 100 feet from my desk. I turned off my Airport & cycled it back on. It then connected to an AP that is 15 feet from my desk at 5.0GHZ. This connection stayed up for at least two hours without any problem. I know that 2.4Ghz is more susceptible to interference than 5.0Ghz. So, I would like to try & force my MBA to connect at 5.0Ghz & perhaps to the specific AP located closest to my desk.
    Thanks again for your suggestion.

  • Unstable Wireless Bridge Connection via 802.11a(Radio 1) of Aironet 1242

    Hi,
I'm going to setup up an AP 1242 in a remote area to support b/g client via a 802.11a bridge link (all using AP 1242).
Before the deployment, I tested the configuration in a lab environment. However, I found the bridge link will come up a while and suddenly gone. Resetting the root AP or the non-root AP cannot bring the connection up again. Sometimes, when I shutdown the b/g radio (radio 0) of the remote AP, the bridge link will be established again. Following is the log from the root AP.
    Thanks!

Thanks dmantill for reminding me to revisit the antenna and related stuff.
As the setup is in a lab environment, the APs are put on a work bench next to each other, therefore, the radio output power was lowered.
After adjusting the output powers, it works as expected.
    Thanks Surendra and dmantill.

  • Wga54g connecting to sony blu ray using WPA-PSK (TKIP) or WPA2-PSK (AES)

My Wga54g is to be the interenet source to my sony blu ray player. I have a wireless broadband router modem setup that uses WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA2-PSK (AES). How do I configure everything to work? Since the WGA54G only does WEP is there a way to configure it or the Sony Blu ray to get a internet signal to it? The sony seems to have a automatic IP or manual IP configuration setting option.  I suppose I can step down to WEP on the router settings but I'd rather not. I tried that and couldn't get it to work regardless. Please help!

To connect the Wireless-G Game adapter to a wireless network, please determine your SSID, Wireless Security and/or Network Key. Second you need to lower down the security mode to WEP, since WGA54G do not have any other security mode. Here is the link for connecting the Wireless Network using a WGA54G: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4558&userrole=Linksy...

  • Should I use WPA security?

I'm currently using WEP 128bit security, which I've heard is hackable. In deciding to use WPA Personal for my AE, I need to know:
    1. Will it slow down my network?
    2. Will it be compatible with my old iBook (using first generation AirPort card) and Windows XP computer?
    thanks,
    Eric

Apple stress that "WPA is a very secure encryption method that is now preferred for computers that can use it. WEP is an older encryption method that is less secure, but it is useful if your network has systems that are not WPA capable. "
I use WPA on my 4 year old PowerBook and my iMac with no difficulties. However, I would not be able to use WPA2 with the original Airport card in my PB. So, yes. WPA is compatible with Airport original cards without slowing down the network.

  • Odd DNS problems with wireless using WPA security.

My partner and I have two Macbooks, hers is the white 1.83Ghz and mine is the white 2.0Ghz. The 1.83 with the latest updates (10.4.8) connects just fine and browses fine, no issues what-so-ever. My 2.0Ghz (also on latest update 10.4.8) does connect through WPA as well, but fails to browse with what appears to be DNS failures.
The console spews out messages like "mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (192.168.2.102); delaying packets by 5 seconds"
Repeated refreshes of the browsers (Safari and Firefox) have mixed responses but mostly just timeout trying to connect to anything.
I have tried all the tricks that I have heard about, including reinstalling OS X from scratch (wiping out the disk), removing the preferred connections, removing keychains, deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internet... files etc. All with no appearant change.
The machine connects just fine and browses fine with no security or WEP set on the router. Just seems to be related to WPA. The router does not support WPA2 so I cant test that. I have tried 'nslookup' and 'host' in the terminal and get mixed responses. Sometimes it looks up quickly and fine, all the while the browser is timing out in the background on the same host name. Other times those commands also timeout with messages like:
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
The /etc/resolv.conf shows the nameserver to be 192.168.2.1 (my router) which is correct as it is the same on the other macbook and windows machines. I did, however, try setting the DNS servers manually to my ISPs servers in the Network Preferences but this made no difference. It is bazaar that two macbooks with what I believe to be identical OS and updates (10.4.8) can have such different results. It is definitely related to WPA, but how it is broken and why I don't know - but it appears to me to be DNS related because pinging and browsing to IP addresses presents no problems.
Any tips on things I can try next would be most helpful. Thanks, Chad.
    Macbook 2.0Ghz C2D (white)
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, same problem here since the Airport update.
Used to have trouble reconnecting after sleep but I solved that problem by deleting then reseting my "Preferred Network" setting.
But since the update the MacBook just loses the connection to the internet. It seems to stay connected to the router (Linksys) and can see my iMac on Bonjour but not Internet connectivity.
On your clue, I disabled WPA and it hooked right up and seems to be working fine.
Now I just have to wait and see if it loses the connection spontaneously over the next few hours.
I don't know why one of your MacBooks is working and the other isn't. Were they both updated last week with the Airport update?

is it possible to get my wireless clients to connect without a wpa password, for guest logins ?

    Hi There

will my pc automatically connect to the wireless when there is no auth set on the controller ?

  • Cannot connect to mobile hotspot using wpa; only open security works

I have a Galaxy S5 and am trying to connect to the mobile hotspot using my Surface tablet.  If I have the mobile hotspot setup using WPA2 security with a password I cannot connect however I can connect if I am using Open security.
I can connect the surface to other routers using WPA security, just not the Samsung as a mobile hotspot.
    does anyone have any suggestions?

What you have proved here is that your tablet has a password conflict somewhere.  You should find out where your wireless profiles are being stored on that device, wipe them out and then try connecting again.  Once you provide the tablet with all of the correct connection credentials and configurations it should connect just fine.
Connecting without a password proves there is not a WiFi issue.  Connecting to other devices is additional proof that there is not a WiFi issue going on.  You just need to straighten out the security issue and then will be good to go.

  • New iPad won't connect to Mobile Hotspot using WPA or WPA2

I have a new iPad running iOS 6.01.  It connects to wifi networks perfectly.  I also own a Blackberry 9790 that is capable of running a wifi hotspot.  When I try to connect my iPad to the mobile hotspot when WPA or WPA2 Encryption is used the iPad cannot connect.  If I change the Encrypstion to WEP I am able to connect the iPad and wifi works on it.
Is there a reason the new iPad won't connect to a mobile hotspot that's using WPA/WPA2?  Is there a way to resolve this issue?
I am able to connect my MacBook Pro to the mobile hotspot using WPA/WPA2 so I know that it's not my phone or the hotspot not working properly.
    Thanks

It appears as though I fixed my own problem...I hadn't yet tried restarting my blackberry or my iPad since I had been trying to setup the mobile hotspot and connect the iPad.  Anyways, I restarted both devices and then tried connecting using WPA/WPA2 and it worked.
iPad is now connecting to my mobile hotspot using WPA/WPA2 with no problems.
Maybe try doing the same if you haven't.

  • WPA Security

My iMac will not connect to a wireless network with WPA security enabled - message 'Network requires a WPA password appears' but it will not accept the password . If I take off the WPA security, then it connects. I have tried this at two separate locations using two different routers (one Netgear, one Huweai). My old mac mini connects with no problem with security on as do two Windows laptops.
I have tried WPA personal and WPA2 personal but nothing works - still will not accept the password
I used the Apple transfer facility to transfer the data from my old mac mini to the iMac
Apple support little help - just suggested that check my internet connection
    Mac OSX ver 10.6.7

When using WPA2-PSK have you tried selecting the AES option.
I've got a Netgear router and have that option selected rather than the TKIP choice.
I wonder whether it would be worth experimenting on changing the channel on the router. I've seen on here that it's helped some people with flaky wifi performance.
On the Netgear it might be an idea to back-up the settings before fiddling so that you can restore them if needs be.

  • WPA Security with the F5D7230-4

    Hey,
I've successfully bridged my Airport Express from my Belkin F5D7230-4 with WEP Security enabled and it worked very well. Well, I should actually rephrase that; it worked well for all the Macs. The only PC on the wireless network couldn't establish a consistent connection, so I had to change the security to WPA and now everybody's computers work very well (WPA is actually desired). The only problem with WPA is that I can't get WDS to work with it, in other words, the Airport Express won't connect to the Belkin. After configuring the settings the same way as before (except changing the security) the Airport Express will first stay solid yellow, turn green for 2 or 3 seconds, and then flash yellow again. I have tried changing the wireless channel, and telling the Airport Express to just join (not WDS) while the Airport Express next to the Belkin, but still nothing worked.
Wireless bridging is infact enabled on the Belkin, and I've also tried allowing only certain access points to connect, but that didn't work either.
Is it possible that I'm not able to use WPA security with WDS on this Belkin router?
It's a F5D7230-4 Belkin Router with 4.05.03 firmware, and the latest firmware is on the Airport Express.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Do you mean to get into the network? I do have a password WPA password set, and that's why the Airport Express can't access it.
I need WPA set because a: the PC on the network needs it in order to connect, and b: it's much more secure.
I pretty much need to have the security because the Belkin has it on, and to my understanding, the Airport Express also needs to have it enabled to work.
Is there any update or anything available that could help my problem, or am I pretty much out of luck?

  • Force 802.11a?

    Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro that claims to support 802.11a. I'm on a college campus with 802.11b/a/g WAP's in most classrooms. The problem is, everyone uses 802.11g, so that frequency range tends to be relatively saturated with activity, and so is fairly slow. Is there a way to force this Mac to connect via 802.11a, to take advantage of the lighter crowding and much faster speeds?
    Thanks,
    Adam

Sounds plausible... Don't suppose you know how to alter a Preferred Network setup to use 802.11a, instead of 802.11g?

  • WPA security on 10.3?

I heard you can set up and use WPA security on 10.3; I have it running on my iMac with 10.4 but the menu choices are not there on 10.3 (on myiBook). The help viewer leads to a page that says Mac has it but that's it for help
Any ideas on how to use it? It asks for a password but that case only covers WEP.

I think you mean AirPort Extreme and the answer is no. Macs with the original AirPort card can use WPA.
But you need a Mac with an AirPort Extreme card to use WPA2.

Yes and no. The "Import WSDL" doesn't create AS3 classes that
allow header injection of the appropriate WS-Security elements.
I've managed to work around this using straight mx:webservice tags
and AS3. There is an open bug at

In general though, it's been a challenge to get the simplest

  • HP Deskjet 3050 - Unable to connect to WPA secured wireless network

    Hello,
My first post here so please excuse any faux pas on my part.  I bought this HP Deskjet 3050 a week ago and have been waging war with it ever since.  I'd be really grateful if someone could possibly advise on how I can resolve this.
I am unable to connect the printer to my secured wireless network, even though other computers, cell phones, etc. are connected without issue.  I have tried WPA, WPA2 and WPA2-Mixed security modes with the same failure. Specifically, the connection wizard reaches 66% and then displays the error that the wizard is unable to find network/printer.  If I disable the security, the printer connects fine.
I'm using a Linksys WRVS4400N router with firewall and associated firewall settings disabled.  The router is broadcasting on 802.11G/N mixed mode.
I'm installing the software supplied on the setup CD on a Windows XP SP3 system.  I have confirmed that the network the PC and printer are connected to are the same.
A question as well, if I may:  I haven't tried these drivers yet but I see there are updated drivers for the printer dated 14/12/2010.  The release notes indicate improved networking, but don't elaborate beyond this.  Does anyone know if there was a known problem with connecting to secured networks that has now been fixed?
Finally, just a note that I'm partially sighted and am using a screen reader on all systems.  I'll try my best to be as helpful as I can but please do excuse me if I occasionally can't find settings, etc. on screen and need a bit more detailed help.
Thanks in advance for your help, which I really will appreciated.
    Have a pleasant day,
All the best for now and take care,
    Hussein.
It's not the fact it can't be done, it's the fact it hasn't been done, yet.

    HI,
firstly, apologies for the delay getting back to you.  Poor health has meant I've had little time nor inclination to do much on the computer side of htings.
Anyway, I'm please to say the problem with the HP 3050 failing to connect to my network is now solved.  It seems to be a bug with the setup software, and that seems to include the latest version posted Dec 2010.
To resolve the problem, I did the following:
    1. Disable all security options for the network, so it's just an open network.
    2. Connect the HP 3050 to the network using the setup wizard. This time it connected OK for me.
    3. Locate the printer's IP address.  I used the client list table accessed through my router's interface. You may be able to get this through the printer's on-screen menu, but as I'm partially sighted, this wasn't an option for me.
    4. Log into the printer's control panel at http://ip.address.of.printer e.g. http://192.168.2.108
    5. Under the advanced options, configure the settings for the network, including security protocol and passphrase.  Remember to enter the SSID of the network exactly as configured on the router.
    6. Apply the settings and log out of the printer's control panel.
    7. Log back into the router's control panel and re-apply the security options.  Be sure that they match those match those entered for the printer.
Hopefully this will be of use to others in the same position.
    Thanks again for your time.
    Best,
    H.
It's not the fact it can't be done, it's the fact it hasn't been done, yet.
