Connecting to a home stereo

I connected my 5th generation ipod to my home stereo aux jacks with a monster icable. There is no sound when the ipod is playing, but there is still sound when I listen to the ipod with headphones. How can I fix this?

Do you have the cable connect to the in audio sockets and not the out sockets of your stereo

  • Trying to connect Airtunes to home stereo

I'm afraid that I really have no idea of what I'm doing here....this is my situation -
I have a G5 iMac in my home office connected via Airport Express to a DSL modem (and via USB to a printer on my desk). I also have a Sony VAIO notebook (Windows XP Pro SP2) with a Belkin 802.11g wireless notebook network card that I have connected wirelessly so it can access both the printer and my ADSL modem. No problems to date with that.
I have a second Airport Express downstairs (ground floor) in the living room (my home office is on the first floor) that I have used to extend the wireless signal so my husband can connect his Mac mini and 12 inch Powerbook to the ADSL modem. His studio is across the courtyard from the living room on top of the garage (about 7 - 8 metres from the Airport Express in the living room). This works, too.
My problem arises because I have tried to connect my home stereo in the living room to 'airtunes' on my G5 iMac by using a 'home stereo cable' that I bought from my local Apple dealer. It has a 3.5mm connector on one end and two RCA connectors on the other end. (I was told by my local Apple dealer that this would be 'dead easy').
I plugged the 3.5mm connector into the Airport Express in the living room and connected the RCA connectors to my tuner/amplifier (it is an old Nakamichi RE-3). Nothing happens at all. Nothing shows up in iTunes (I'm running iTunes 6). My Apple shop said 'just plug into the Aux RCA connectors and then set your stereo to AUX' - could the problem be that my Aux connectors also say /video? The input options on the front of the machine are CD, Aux/Video, Tuner, Cassette player.
Sorry to be so ignorant - perhaps my Stereo is just too old?
Any help/suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
    Cheers
    Tricia

A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing..... :-(((
I did some reading of the Help files and discovered a couple of basic things -
    1) I had to change Preferences in iTunes to look for remote speakers connected with Airtunes
    2) I had to change System Preferences/Firewall setting to check the iTunes Music Sharing box
    3) I had to remember to turn on the volume control for my stereo
Result - I now have my iTunes music playing throughout the house because my stereo system (20 years old) is wired to the bedroom, bathroom and study...I love it

  • Connecting iPod to home stereo

What are the best-sounding options to hook up my iPod to my home stereo? Is there a way to hook up my iPod to my home stereo via a digital connection (i.e. a coax or optical connection)? I have a high end home theater receiver with a very good D/A converters and would like to use the D/A converters in my receiver rather than those in the iPod or iPod docking station.

Thanks for your suggestions! Both of those products look like they would do the trick.
From the look of those 2 adapters I would guess that the signal that comes through the iPod dock connection has already been converted from digital to analog (that is unless the adapters have built in D/A converters, which I doubt). That being the case, it doesn't look as though it is possible to run a digital connection from the iPod to a receiver (although maybe it can be done from iTunes on my computer...?).
    Thanks again!

  • Can the Mac Mini G4 be connected to a home stereo?

    Hi,
I've been trying for days to find the right cable which will allow me to connect my G4 Mac Mini's headphone out port to either an optical or digital coax input on my home stereo.
If anyone has had any success with this, please let us know!

Doug, the G4 mini does not have optical/digital output capabilities. You can get a mini-plug to toslink adapter, as I have on my intel mini going to my stereo's optical input, but I do not believe it will work since the output port is not digital/optical.
As you saw in the other thread on PPC mini and audio output
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=935713&tstart=30
Your options are limited when going from analog output to digital/optical input.
If you do not have any composite/RCA type inputs available (red and white cable) perhaps a switchbox would suffice. There are many on the market, some with a remote if you do not wish to get up and change the input source to the box.
Perhaps going to a site like http://macaudiopro.digitalmedianet.com/ can give you some ideas/solutions to your dilemma.
As for cables, while Amazon is always a source with a number of options available, cablesforless.com, cables4sure.com cablestogo.com etc. are all online wholesalers/retailers of audio and video cables. If you are looking for quality vs. price you will need to shop around a bit, as the different options/style cables can get confusing. Especially for someone like me who just wants to plug the **** thing in!

  • Bluetooth connection to my home stereo

I can connect my new Mac OS X version 10.5.6 to my Samsung home stereo with no problems and it starts off playing my iTunes songs beautifully. However after 1-2 minutes it starts to jump as if it were playing a scratched CD.
Can anyone please explain why this would be happening and how I can fix the problem. Distance is less than 5 metres with nothing causing any interference.
    Thank you!

    Hi.
Unfortunately, you cannot use the bluetooth module to transmit audio to your stereo.
Why? Because Tiger does not support the A2DP bluetooth profile (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), which is required to broadcast stereo audio over bluetooth.
Apparently, Leopard will support this profile (you'll have to wait for its final specs).
Meanwhile, there are a couple of wireless (wi-fi) options available, including the Apple Express with AirTunes.

  • CONNECTING nano to HOME STEREO & CAR STEREO

I hooked the Nano up to my home and car receivers via: mini-cable > AV cable.
    AUDIO SOUNDS VERY MUFFLED:
    • Its definitely not the quality of the mp3's.
    • EQ(if you can call it that) is on "off".
    • High volume, my home receiver turns off (power overload or something)
    • Low volume, low output
    • Wires are good (monster cables)
    Am I doing something wrong?
Do I need to buy a dock adapter to regulate power & output?
You'll know this by whether you have to use the ipod or the speakers to turn up the volume.
If you can use either volume controls, then it DOESN"T regulate output.
If you can ONLY use the speaker/receiver volume control, then it DOES regulate.
Please try your docks and reply, haha.
    Thanks for your responses.

Every time you buy Monster cables, an electrical engineer cries. Seriously, don't waste your money on their snake oil.
That said, they ought to work for this application. You shouldn't need a dock; that just gives you the same signal at a more convenient physical location.
The volume level of the ipod should be as high as possible without distorting the signal you hear out of the stereo.
I don't know what to tell you; my nano sounds fine when I play it through my stereo exactly like you're doing it. (Not as good as a CD, but as good as what I hear in my ipod headphones.)

    Thanks for your reply.
That is how far I had gotten:
    Audio sounds muffled,
even with any EQ or Volume setting on either receivers(home&car) and ipod. I tried all these variables.
I even got monster cables to make sure it had good connection.
Does a ipod dock regulate output?
    Does anyone know?

  • Can I use Apple TV to play iTunes from my iMac on my home stereo?

How does Itunes from my Imac connect to my home stereo using Apple TV?

    Greetings;
When you launch the iTunes Application, down in the lower right hand corner, you see an icon and "Speakers".  Select the Apple TV device and iTunes will then use the Apple TV as an external speaker.
You can also access your iTunes music and movies from the Apple TV menu.  With your iTunes Application open on your computer, select "Computers" from the Apple TV Menu.
You'll also need to turn ON "Home Sharing" in the iTunes Application.  You can find that setting in the "Advanced" menu option in iTunes.
Hope this helps!  All the best...and Merry Christmas!

  • IPdo Universal Dock /// Not made for home stereo use

Wow, after talking to “Dawn” at Apple technical support I was advised against using the iPod Universal Dock to connect to my home stereo. Apparently it was made for convenience rather than sonics. Funny but the older model (without the remote and s-video jacks) sounds great when connected to the stereo verses using the iPod’s headphone jack.
Looks like I’ll be returning the Dock and Remote….
Here’s my original email to the iPod store:
    Gentlemen,
At the advice of a friend I recently purchased the iPod Universal Dock (w remote)to connect to my stereo. This was based on his claim (which I verified) that the dock sounded substantially better than the headphone out jack (using the Monster Cable interconnect). Unfortunately the new Universal dock (w/ s-video & remote capabilities) sounds worse than the iPod’s headphone jack. We did a lot of comparisons using the older generation doc and have identified that it’s my new dock that sounds like garbage.
Is my Dock faultily or was the old one sonically better? Either way I would like to return my doc for either an exchange (if you believe my dock to be faulty) or a refund.
    Thanks

I recently purchased a universal 5 in 1 docking station that is suppose to charge my nano and also play through my stereo also but when I hooked it up to my stereo I can't get it to play. Wondering what I could be doing wrong, does the stereo have to be on a certain station? Any suggestions I might could try. There was not much instruction that came with it just a diagram but looks like I followed the diagram?!

  • What bluetooth device works with home stereo

Is there anyway to connect my Imac to my home stereo via bluetooth or any other methods short of stereo cables.?

You can't do it via Bluetooth because the Mac OS doesn't support A2DP yet which is required for streaming stereo audio over a Bluetooth connection.
If you've got a wireless home network you can use Airport Express:
