Connecting to an external display

I have a new black macbook and i bought the Mini dvi to dvi cord through apple. My problem is that the cord is like 4 inches long!! How am I supposed to connect it to the back of my LG display and my macbook with having the macbook hang in the air? Is there an adapter that I can buy to get a few feet, or am I doing something terribly wrong. Thanks in advance for you help, and sorry if already posted.

No, that is a DVI extension cable and you will need just a standard DVI cable. That one has a male and a female end, and the able you want will be male on both ends.
That Dr. Bott cable is way overpriced also. Take a look HERE for the correct cables at fair prices.

I have an apple macbook pro late 2013 15" retina display crashing on me when i am connected to an external display?

I got the following message after the crash, it happens a few times a day, my system is the base with 16gb ram late 2013 15" macbook pro retina. it only happens when i am connected to an external display, I do have a converter from vga to displayport. also, i run 4 different browsers in incognito mode as i do web testing and also have about 30 tabs open and excel and a few other apps open, not sure if this is what makes it happen or if it is the external display? it is under warranty, so if you see anything below that may relate to the hardware i can bring it in and get it fixed.

My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
Here's what I've tried:
1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
Any advice would be helpful!

I have a new iMac which has 2 thunderbolt ports. I was told that I can add 2 displays using these ports with thunderbolt to hdmi cables. However when I do this only one screen connects. The other remains blank (and off).

Connecting MacBook through external display in Windows Boot Camp partition

Hello everyone! I recently installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my MacBook 320GB. My Mac Partition of the drive works perfect, and connects through Mini DVI-Video through composite cables and into my T.V. When I tried this in Windows, I had no luck whatsoever. yes, all the drivers are installed for my chipset, processor, keyboard, etc. Windows is updated as well through Microsoft, But not through the Apple Software Update because the download failed again to the Boot Camp update. How do I connect an external display(ex. Projector, T.V., anything that has composite input)? Yes, I know some of you will say, "Your first mistake was buying Vista", but thats not the problem here. Windows Vista works perfectly. When you connect an external display, it re-adjusts its screen resolution but does not appear on the external monitor. Is the Boot Camp Update the solution? Please Help!!!

I am using Vista on Macbook and when I connect my PC to my TV, lot of times, it hangs on me and a blue screen shows up with some errors and then it shut downs. I atleast do this 2-3 times and then finally it gets connected but there has to be a way where we can easily connect to TV without any issues. Any help guys?
Also I have noticed, my resolution on TV when I connect my macbook is 1900 x 1260 something... Is this related to resolutions?

Hi, Is it possible to have the X250 drive 3 external displays using the dock? Can I just connect all three of the external monitors directly to the dock or do I have to daisy chain the monitors using display port?I do not intend to use the laptop lcd while the machine is docked. Thanks

This is really disappointing. Lenovo is explicitly advertising that T420 is capable of quad-display setup using only digital connections. I hope it can be fixed with a driver patch but seems very unlikely.

Connecting 24" LED external display - does it half my Vram ?

I just got my 17" 2,9 and 24" LED today and I connected both. I use both displays so I have my labtop open all the time, but someone told me that if I have my macbook lid open it will share the VRAM of my graphics card between the two displays and pretty much decrease the performance a lot.
I read through both the display and mbp manual but there is no documentation about this !?

I just bought the new 17" Macbook Pro along with the new 23" LED display and have noticed that when the two are running together, meaning the macbook pro's display lid is open, (oh, and I'm not connected with power but rather using the battery) I get glitches. The volume stops all of a sudden and I lose any Apple command functions. (i.e. force quit, system preferences, shut down, etc...) Also when watching streaming video on Fox.com after 20 minutes or so Safari just quits. Could all these occurrences be related to the graphics card issue and the additional use of vram?

My MacBook pro will not turn on after connecting to an external display

I connected my MacBook pro to a projector for a presentation using a VGA adapter. It worked for a couple of minutes, then my computer shut off and I can not turn it back on. It has never given any trouble before then. Now when I try to turn it on, the white led comes on briefly, then it makes a tone and nothing happens, the screen stays dark, any idea what is wrong????

Connecting TWO (2) external displays to the MacBook

I currently have a 21.5" LG monitor attached externally to my 13" MacBook. It works great.
I've been thinking of adding another monitor to accompany it, but A) I'm not sure if the MacBook can even handle it, and B) I'm not sure what kind of dongle will work.

Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
- Turned on the TV
- Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
- Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
- Opened the MacBook
- Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

Rookie question, 2009 MacBook Pro. We bought a dvi-VGA adapter to connect to an external display. Got a picture on the external monitor but very poor resolution. Meanwhile the display on the MacBook Pro re-set itself and we were not able to restore it to normal even after we disconnected the external monitor. We now have our MacBook Pro with messed up resolution and display, AND no external display. How do we get the MacBook Pro back to its default display settings? Any help greatly appreciated!

I would like to offer this solution. I have a MacBook Pro with an external monitor, and, for a year and a half both displays slept when I closed the MBPS. This behavior stopped when I installed Lion. They would sleep when I removed the power cord, but what a pain that would be. The command "pmset -g assertions" gave no indication of which process ought be preventing sleep.
I contacted Apple support, and after some searching, the guy working with me found this thread, which was flagged as an Apple-approved solution:

Here's the command to make your laptop behave like it did Pre-Lion (courtesy of my friend):
sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0"
Works perfectly for me. If it screws up your system, just zap the PRAM next boot (cmd-opt-p-r) and you'll be back to the default Lion state. Or if you can still get into terminal, this command will get you back to Lion's default state as well:
sudo nvram -d boot-args

Can i connect an external display using HD3000 after the discrete gpu has stopped working?

Say for some reason the HD 6490m is fried and I can only use the HD 3000; will I be able to connect the laptop to an external 1080p display via thunderbolt?
Technically it should work, i know. But i've tried it with gfxCardStatus 2.3 and nothing happens until i allow the radeon to work. My question is: after the amd stops working, will the computer allow the HD 3000 to connect to an external display? Is there some kind of limitation so that only the 6490m can use the thunderbolt port?

So i assume this is because Apple uses a custom processor or because of the motherboard that inhibits it somehow, right? I'm asking that because some hd3000 chips in other systems are able to support a second display.

Cannot change display resolution when connected to external display

On my 2.0GHz 13" MacBook, I have no problem with the display resolution when connecting to external display/projector when I am running in Mac OS, everything work perfectly! But things start to get messy when I am running in Windows VISTA 32 (installed within the Boot Camp 2.1). Whenever I connect to any external display/projector via a MiniDisplay-to-VGA cable, the resolutions on both my MacBook LCD and external display/projector drop to 640x480. And i am not able increase the resolution in the Display Settings. Does this mean that I have not installed the latest version of display drivers? Or is it that Apple did not provide the VISTA 32 drivers (in Boot Camp 2.1) that is compatible with the Mini Display port.
