Connecting to an old projector

I'm trying to connect my new MacBook (13" aluminum, late 2008) to an old projector (InFocus LP755) from 1999. The projector doesn't have USB or FireWire connectors. It has:
- 15-pin VESA
- composite video
- S-video
- a 36-pin connector
Apple says that my MacBook won't connect to composite video or S-video. Apple says I can buy two adapters for my MacBook:
- mini-DVI to VGA adapter
- mini-DVI to DVI adapter
The VESA connector looks exactly like a VGA connector. Can I connect Apple's VGA adapter to the projector's VESA input?

Everything is working now. The last problem was that the projector has a "Computer 1" and "Computer 2" toggle, and I assumed that with only one computer connected it was "Computer 1". I toggled to "Computer 2" and the message changed from "No signal detected" to "Perfecting image." Same blue screen, but I waited a bit and then the projector displayed the computer screen.
To summarize the problems, and solutions:
- VESA (the projector's input) is the same as VGA (the MacBook's output).
- The aluminum MacBooks (late 2008) don't have adapters for composite video or S-video and apparently never will.
- The MacBook has a mini-DisplayPort, not a mini-DVI. Don't buy a mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter.
- Apple sells a mini-DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter for $29, or you can get one on eBay for $25. Some of Apple's mini-DisplayPort-to-VGA adapters needed a firmware update (download from Apple) to prevent image quality problems. (The adapter I bought didn't need the firmware update, so presumably new adapters don't have this problem.)
- The projector toggles between "Video" input, "Computer 1" and "Computer 2". Don't assume that if you have only one computer it's "Computer 1". Toggle to "Computer 2" then wait a bit to see if your screen appears on the projector.
- Best advice of all: don't buy a 10-year-old projector. Look for a projector with USB or Firewire or something with fewer headaches!

  • Can't connect MBP to LCD projector using DVI-TO-VGA adapter

I am trying to connect my MacBookPro to a Hitachi CP-X885 projector, which I normally connect an IBM Thinkpad to at 800x600 or 1024x768. I also use my MBP and the VGA adapter to connect to other LCD projectors and monitors (so my adapter works, as well as both systems, projector, cables, etc.). Problem is, that when I connect my MBP to the projector (I have to connect it via VGA as there is a 250 foot cable that goes to the front where the rear-projection takes place). When I do the "detect displays" nothing is detected. I also connected directly to the projector using a shorter cable, same thing (doesn't detect it). So, is the projector not supplying some type of signal to the output, that the MBP wants to see?)... is there a way to FORCE the MPB to have output? I know that if there is signal, it will display (we have LOTS of notebooks that display to the projector just fine, BUT have SEVERAL MBP's, and NONE of them will detect, and we've tried several adapters (just to be sure)... HELP!... is there some way to FORCE output from the MBP instead of it having to DETECT IT???
    Thanks!

Sorry Walter, but according to the Terms of Use (which you agreed to the first time you logged in to the Discussions and can be found if you click on the "Help" link to the right):
Do not post a URL unless it directly answers a user's question.
The URL you post does not answer David's original question. Also, it could potentially void his warranty because a firmware hack (and this is indeed a link to a "hack") is an unauthorized alteration to the hardware of his computer. ("Software" can only be installed on the hard drive and that hack is not installed on the hard drive, it's installed on the firmware on a chip inside the logic board.)
I don't want to take this thread off-topic, but your reply does NOT help David's situation. I would, however, value your input and anyone else's to this and any other topic in the Discussions as long as it is pertinent to the original subject.

  • I am trying to connect to an external projector

I have a 15" Macbook pro running Windows XP Pro bootcamp, I am trying to connect to an external projector using the Mac mini dvi to vga adaptor, I have now tried two different adaptors but still I cannot get the display to work.
Does anyone know if there is an update that needs to be installed or additional drivers that may need to be installed for this to work?
Anyone out there have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Simon

Thanks to the suggestion of downloading XP Service Pack 3, the problem seems to be resolved!

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

Connecting MAC Air to Projector - which is better, hdmi, vga or usb?

HDMI is thje preferred digital replacemnt for older analog video standards, which your other choices use. It offers far higher signal and definition quality.
Apple has an adapter that is used with your Thunderbolt port/ Mini DisplayPort, if yours is equipped as such.
I've not had a problem with this. It is a Belkin.

  • Connecting to a Network Projector

We're looking to upgrade our office projector and are interested in using the built in Windows feature, "Connect to a Network Projector". I've asked a few manufacturers if they support the future and they said no. I have a feeling that all network
projectors are connectible using the built in tools Windows has. Has anyone had any luck with this feature? If so, what projector brands? We're hoping to avoid installing custom software. Thanks.

  • Connecting to an old Airport Express in Yosemite

Hi, I have a first gen Express and I wanted to connect it to my network. I have Airport Utility 5.6 working though Mahler's launcher:
    http://coreyjmahler.com/2014/10/16/airport-utility-5-6-1-on-os-x-10-10-yosemite/
My problem is that when I try to connect to the old express's wifi network in Network Preferences or through the menu bar icon, Yosemite takes me directly to the new Airport Utility, which can't set up the old express. I can't just connect to its network and configure it. Without being on its network, Airport Utility 5.6 doesn't see it and can't change any settings. Help!
    Thanks

Not between 10g and 7.3 .... you will need to have an Oracle9i intermediate.
