Connecting to another computer

We will be moving out of our house for a month or two and would like to connect our computer to our in-laws computer via the wireless router.  Is this possible?  In-laws have DSL (as do we) but the main computer in there home is just hooked up to the modem.  We only have the main router and wireless hookup on our computer - will we need to get something additional for the inlaws main computer or can we just use what we have already  - HELP!

Just bring your router to the inlaws. Hook it up just as its connected in your home, you will probably have to change the username and passsword for the dsl connection to the inlaws account unless you are both using the same provider. Plug their pc into a lan port and you can connect wirelessly as usual.

  • How do you set up your iphone so when you connect to another computer you have to enter a password before accessing the information?

    Hi
I just want to know how you can set up your iphone so when you connect to another computer you have to enter a password before accessing the information? My friend connected hers to my computer and it asked for a password so I know its a function.
I have a phone password enabled so its not that, any help would be great.

The Passcode Lock prevents syncing the iPhone with iTunes or accessing any data on the iPhone when the iPhone is connected to another computer different from the computer being used for syncing the iPhone.

  • HT3819 I can use remote on my iPhone to connect with my iTunes library, but i can't connect to another computer using home sharing to access apple tv.  I have used the same access ID and password that is used for the apple tv.

I can use the Remote app on my iphone to connect with my itunes library on my computer, but I can't connect to the Apple TV using home sharing with another computer in the house.  I am using the same ID and password that the apple tv uses to connect with the other computer.  Also how do I check what version of IOS that my iphone is using?

    Version:
iOS Settings>General About (or it'll say when you hook it up to iTunes)
Are all the devices on the same physical network?  I think you're saying all are set up using the same home sharing credentials.
If you've not done so restart all devices and your router.
If you can get any of the devices connected by ethernet to reduce the wifi burden that may help but to be honest I would not expect simply beoing on wifi to prevent devices/computers appearing in the list.
Does the other computer have any firewall or port blocking software running?

  • Failed External Hard Drive - Connect to another computer to repair??

    Hi Guys
I have an older Maxtor External hard drive that looks like it has failed. At least that is what my Disk Utility says in my Power Mac G4. There is a solid red light, and just a blinking green, and it will not load onto my desk top on my Power Mac G4. But the weird thing is that I see it in my "System Profiler", and "Disk Utility", even +when it is not connected.+
If I connect this Maxtor hard drive to another computer, like my Mac Book Pro, to see if there is any life left in it, using disk utility or another recovery disk, will it do any harm to my Mac Book Pro? Is it contagious?
    Thanks,
    Anneita

No, it isn't contagious. Connect it to any computer you like.

  • I just had Uverse installed.  The iMac which was my base station is now connected via my household electric ground connection.  Another computer is now the base station.  I have connected my Time Capsule to my computer by USB cable, but can't set it up

I just had Uverse installed.  My iMac desktop has been the base station for my wi fi, but we had to connect it via ground wire of my electrical system and use another desktop as the base station [with windows op system].  We have connected my Time Capsule to the computer via USB cable.  I believe that will require setting up the Capsule to use Ethernet, but the instructiions on the install disc only talk about using Airport.  How can I find instructions for setting up using USB cable and Ethernet?
    Thanks!
    Charles Leach

All the manuals are listed at the head of the thread.

The TC cannot connect to the computer by USB.. it is network device.. it only connects by ethernet or wireless.. usb is for external drive or printer.

  • Want to connect to another computer

I want to connect iPod touch to my laptop that I use most. I do not want to have my stored music deleted. It happened to me in the past when switch the connection from one computer to another computer. I want to avoid it.

    On your iMac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Shift your eyes away from the window in the center of the screen and move your focus to the top edge of the computer screen, where you will see the AirPort Utility menus
    Click Base Station
Click Equivalent Network Password and your password and "key" will be revealed

  • IPod loses "Last Played" after being connected to another computer

I've done a lot of searching on this, but it's a hard thing to search for since it's difficult to explain. Hopefully someone has heard of this before. If it's already been posted somewhere, I apologize.
Basically, I sync my iPod classic 80gb with my work computer. I use a lot of smart playlists to manage what I listen to. "Last Played" is an integral part of my smart playlist system.
If I connect my iPod to any computer other than my work computer, the iPod will forget any of the songs I listened to since the last time I synced. I would like to be able to use the iPod as a portable hard drive, but when I do I lose this information. I just tested this to be sure, but when this happens, I don't lose any ratings that I've given to songs since my last sync. So far I've only noticed "Last Played" being dropped.
Any information would be a huge help. Thanks!

  • Connection to another computer

This may be really obvious to many, however the combo drive in my i book is broken and I don;t want to buy another, however I would like to get all the photos off my i book without emailing them as I only have a dial-up. How can I transfer these to another computer ? The other computer is an iMac.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is the iMac new enough to be equipped with a FireWire port? If so, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to access the iBook's hard drive and transfer your photos over.

  • HT201263 Please help, I'm extremely frustrated.  Have 4th G ipod touch stuck in recovery mode.  Tried connecting to another computer to restore.  Goes through 75 minutes of ipod software update then get a Problem downloading.  Network connection timed out

Please help, I'm extremely frustrated.  ipod is stuck in recovery mode.  Connected to different computer to restore and after 75 minutes of downloading get a message that there was a Problem downloading, network connection timed out.  Cannot get past "connect to itunes" on ipod.

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves that error.

  • Strange message when trying to connect to another computer via SMB

    Hello,
I sucessfully set up a MAC/VISTA network and used it for the past days. I connected through CMD+K smb//:<my_ip>
But now I get everytime the following message when doing that:
_*"Connection failed" - This data server is already active on your computer. Please access the files and volumes locally.*_
(This is my translation of the german message, so it might not be the correct translation)
Anyway, I can't find the share in Finder, it is not there anymore. What does this message means, I'm confused??

    open up your terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
    Type in the following:
    cd /Volumes <enter>
    ls -al <enter>
Now see if the name of your Vista PC is in the list. If it is, unmount them (there may be multiple instances)
    umount <Name of Volume> <enter>
You may have to use the "force" flag, like so:
    umount -f <Name of Volume> <enter>
You'll have to be root to do that.

  • Can't connect to another computer on the network with 'good' password

    Hi;
Out of the blue my wife can no longer connect to my machine on our local network using her normal password. She gets the error 'Sorry, the password you entered is incorrect. Please re-enter it' at the login box. In testing her password it seems fine for all else - can log into her machine fine, can log into other computers on our network OK, do administrator things, etc.....just no long into mine.
I can log into my machine from hers using my account info, so the connection is fine it seems. It just won't accept her password for this single action.
Have repaired permissions on both machines, restarted several times, etc. all to no avail. Went to look into her keychain to see if something was amiss there but did not really see anything that pointed to this particular interaction (perhaps it is stored elsewhere?)
Nothing out of the ordinary happened to her nor my machine that I can think of. Her machine is still on 10.3.9 and I'm on 10.4.7.
Scratching my head on this one, so any help much apprecated.
    ~Roger

After considerable testing I've determined that the problem is in the sharing settings on my computer and not the password on the other computer. I've not solved the issue but clarified the questions I have and posted under the 'networking and sharing' discussion in hopes of some help.

  • Can't connect to another computer on the network

Hello. In my office, we are currently trying to upgrade to the new Mac Pros and Leopard. We have one computer setup so far. We constantly connect to different computers to share files, but we cannot connect to this new one. When I open Network in the finder, I can see the computer, but when I click connect, it just says AFP connection status "Looking up 'Comp X'.local.." The computer is definitely hooked up to the network. Why can't I connect? Thank you!

Ensure that file sharing is enabled on all computers, and under the file sharing in the "Advanced" (or maybe "Options" button) settings ensure that "AFP" is checked (there should also be SMB and FTP options as well).
Additionally, try turning off the firewall in the "Security" system preference pane. Set it to allow all connections, and see if you can connect. The Firewall in Leopard is relatively new in OS X, and still has some problems where it denies service to some network functions.

  • Connecting to another computer as a registered user

My partner and I would like to "connect as" registered users on each other's MBP's but neither of us can remember our passwords to each other's computer.  Is this something that would be listed in Keychain Access?  Any advice?  Thanks.

Hi Eric: yup, i checked there and repeatedly tried the password listed along with any other password I could possibly imagine creating and they're each rejected.  Connection failed.  Any thoughts??

  • Best way to connect to another computer via Internet

    Hello,
I would like to be able to help my students from time to time remotely, that is, by accessing their computer via the Internet so I could make some demos whether on my own screen our theirs.I know that we can do this at school via Apple Remote Desktop. I read a few post on Apple's Forum's Web Site saying that it was quite simple to do but there where many conditions required.
A simple way is neede here since I'm will be talking mostly at starters on the mac and maybe some will be on a PC.
I will need to give them simple instructions to connect easally.
I am not that familiar with "File Sharing", I know the option is there in my Mac. But I'm not sure all of my students will be on the same network and maybe some will be on PC also?
Do I really need Apple Remote Desktop, some other software or via a Web site such as "logmein.com" or others?
Thank you for answering and looking forward to read you,
    Robert Marchand

    HI,
Thank's for answering. I've cheked the product and it seem's quite simple effectively. I even talk to a person on the phone who explained to me what where the possibilities. It seem's like if I want to show how I do something on my Mac to one of my student the student need then to also download the software. As soon as I told the ladie it was between my students and I, the sofware is no longer free (30$ a month?...). So I guess I would have to be cautious about using that product free of charge with my students, as long as I do a "Pear To Pear" connection...
Are there other Internet Services such as this one?
    Thank you for answering,
    Robert Marchand
