Connecting to Closed Networks

I have an airport express that I use for wireless access in my dorm. So, it's acting as a traditional router rather than a range extender. I have it set up as a closed network so that it's only visible to those who know the network name. I also have WPA2 enabled for security.
My problem is that, rather sporadically, I will wake my MBP from sleep and a dialog appears stating that "No known networks are available" and gives a list of available open networks. So, I choose "other" and input the network name and the password, making certain that "remember this network" is checked before connecting. Even after doing this multiple times, I still get the dialog periodically (about every other day or so) and I haven't been able to figure out why.
I left the network open for about a week and didn't encounter this issue, so it seems to be associated with the fact that it is a closed network. It wouldn't be a huge deal to have the network visible to anyone who browses for a network since it is encrypted, but I would rather have it closed in a building with a lot of people.
Does anyone have any ideas for a solution?

Yeah, the debate goes on and on, but if you were running aircrack-ng or kisMac and you saw my non-broadcast SSID pop up because I was actively affiliated to my network, wouldn't that pique your interest more in my network than in Alex's whose WPA2-AES-secured SSID you saw every day?
Meanwhile, I don't really know of any fix to Alex's complaint, in order to avoid the hoops that he has to jump through in order to reaffiliate after waking from sleep -- I can't say that I can recall ever seeing anything posted in these forums that adequately addressed the issue. Nobody's piped in on this thread yet with a suggestion to fix this behavior. I'd love to hear of one that is a dependable long-term fix. I'd go non-broadcast then myself.
I used to not broadcast a long time ago when I first went wireless, but I got tired of dealing with this very issue all the time myself, so when I weighed the annoyance of the reaffiliation process after waking from sleep versus the increased likelihood of my WPA2-AES-PSK with truly random passcode getting cracked because I broadcast my SSID, I chose convenience over annoyance. I don't believe that my security has been compromised in any way by my choice.
Alex is apparently annoyed as well, so that's why I recommended he go ahead and broadcast SSID so as to not be annoyed by this behavior anymore. WPA2-AES with a random passcode is as secure as he's gonna get wirelessly, broadcast SSID or not. He needs to weigh the choice of putting up with the annoyance factor or not...until somebody posts a sure-fire cure.

  • SQL Service Broker 2012: the connection was closed by the remote end, or an error occurred while receiving data: '64(The specified network name is no longer available.)'

Anyone can help with the below issue please? Much appreciated.
We have about 2k+ messages in sys.transmission_queue
Telnet to the ports 4022 is working fine.
Network connectivity has been ruled out.
    The firewalls are OFF.
We also explicitly provided the permissions to the service account on Server A and Server B to the Service broker end points.
    GRANT
    CONNECT ON
    ENDPOINT <broker> <domain\serviceaccount>
Currently for troubleshooting purposes, the DR node is also out of the Availability Group, which means that we right now have only one replica the server is now a traditional cluster.
Important thing to note is when a SQL Server service is restarted, all the messages in the sys.transmission queue is cleared immediately. After about 30-40 minutes, the errors are continued to be seen with the below
    The
    connection was
    closed by the
    remote end,
    or an
    error occurred while
    receiving data:
'64(The specified network name is no longer available.)'

We were able to narrow down the issue to an irrelevant IP coming into play during the data transfer. We tried ssbdiagnose runtime and found this error:

The IP that corresponds to routing address is no where configured within the SSB. We are yet unsure why this IP is being referred despite not being configured anywhere. We identified that this IP belongs to one of nodes other SQL Server cluster, which has
no direct relation to the source server. We failed over that irrelevant SQL Server cluster and made another node active and to our surprise, the data from sys.transmission_queue started flowing. Even today we are able to reproduce the issue, if we bring
back this node [XX.XXX.XXX.199] as active. Since, its a high business activity period, we are not investigating further until we get an approved downtime to find the root cause of it.
When we get a approved downtime, we will bring the node [XX.XXX.XXX.199] as active and we will be running Network Monitor, Process Monitor and the SSB Diagnose all in parallel to capture the process/program that is accessing the irrelevant IP.
Once, we are able to nail down the root cause, I will share more information.

  • Connecting to Closed Airport Network

I recently password protected my network for wireless access. Before upgrading to Tiger, my computer automatically entered my 128 Bit WEP key. Now, when my computer starts up, I have to type in the network name and password everytime. Is there a way to add it to my keychain so that my computer recognizes and connects to the network automatically on startup?

    Duane,
I am aware that not broadcasting the SSID provides little in the way of protection. I do it to prevent casual snooping. I use WPA encyrption on the network. Actually the SSID is not broadcast continuously between base station and clients. It is always sent in the authentication frame and sometimes in other association frames. Tools like AirJack can send spoof deauthentication frames, force reauthentication, and thereby reveal the SSID.
That said I want my network to be closed and my newer Airport Express will not link to the closed network. It is a problem and not a feature.

  • Should iPhone remember connection to a "closed network?"

I chose to keep my network closed by configuring my Airport Extreme to not broadcast it's network name. Laptops have no trouble remember the settings for my closed network after just one configuration. I just got my new iPhone connected to my Airport Extreme, but it seems to lose or forget the settings after it automatically locks. I then have to reconfigure the Wi-Fi settings of the iPhone to reconnect to my wireless network.
Is this normal behavior? Shouldn't the iPhone remember the network settings for networks it successfully connects to, even if the network is not broadcasting its SSID?

Perhaps this is a modem security thing. In France, I use a LiveBox modem. The iphone French help line told me to disconnect then reconnect the modem, wait for 4 buttons to begin flashing and then stay on, until the final 5th button - the one that indicates wifi - starts to flash. During that time, new devices can be added.
I did this, it worked, the iphone's stayed on wifi for two days. I've gone shopping, taken it for walks, and still it connects, no problems, on return.

I have a blackberry 8900. How do you connect to a closed network via ADSL? The wifi does connect to the router, and I am able to browse the net. The ADSL also allows access to a closed network, but I am unable to access the closed network.
why? if i can access the internet via router, why can i not access the closed network?

  • Can't Connect To PC With Closed Network, Any Advice?

    Hi,
I have an AirPort Exteme connecting to my Power Mac G5 and iBook G4. I can connect fine to both using the Closed Network but cannot connect to a Dell laptop. If I open the network or uncheck the box, the Dell can connect. Any suggestions or solutions?

Best solution - don't enable the "create a closed network" feature on the Base Station. It is useless as a security method anyway, since any amateur wireless network hacker will have absolutely no problem sniffing out your so-called "closed network" using software readily available on the internet.

  • Closed Connection - Change in Network

I keep alternating with LAN connection and wireless network WiFi connection. The reason is I have a docking station at my desk and I leave my desk, I undock my laptop it connects to wireless automatically.
The Problem - Say I am working on SQL developer (Version 2.1.1.64 Build MAIN-64.45) at my desk and I undock my laptop(now the LAN connection in wireless). The next time I try to execute a query, it says "Closed Connection". Going to connections and disconnect and reconnect also does not help. I have to close SQL developer and reopen it.
All my other applications like remote server, FTP client etc have no problems with the change of connection. Is there any setting or anything I can do for SQL Developer not to terminate the connection because of the network changes?

Sometimes I also get "Io exception: Connection reset by peer: socket write error"

  • SP L20 hanging whilst user closing network connections on LAN

I have 2 new laptops on out network Satellite Pro L20. They work ok until the user logs off from he network and the machine hangs on 'closing network connections'. It powers up and down no problem when not connected to the network. I have Win XP SP 2 all the win updates installed, all of the bios upgrades and drivers from the website.
    I need HELP.
What should I check and do?? it is still the same hanging on closing network connections and I have to hard boot the laptop to restart, although it does restart eventually if I leave it for 10 minutes.

    Hello Sio
Believe me it is not easy to say why this happen exactly because the LAN configuration of your unit is not known to us. First of all you should discuss it with your network administrator. He is the person who knows how it works in your company.
I dont know if you have some folders for sharing. It is possible that someone use the data saved on your notebook and in this situation the notebook can not cut off the connectivity. What is with your IP Address (defined one or you get it automatically)?

  • Connecting to hidden/closed network

I have all the latest updates for my Macbook Pro, but I've noticed that whenever I restart the computer, it can't connect to my network at school. It's a hidden network, but I have it in my preferred list, so it ought to be able to find it. When I just put the computer to sleep, it can find it when it wakes back up, but if I shut it down or restart it, I have to either select "Other" from the Airport list and re-enter all the information or go to the network options and just enter the password for it again (for some reason it doesn't want to save the passwords for my networks). This happened to me at home when I had that network set up as hidden, so I eventually changed it to open so that I didn't have to deal with it all the time. Is there a step I'm missing somewhere?

Sometimes the etwork configuration get a little messed up so try going to the network System Preference and remove the network from the perferred networks list. Apply the change and then readd the network and see if that helps.

  • Trouble Connecting to a Closed Network

Predominately filled with Windows users, no one knows the slightest bit about how to connect a Mac, it uses WPA Authentication with TKIP encryption. • Open and Closed network access?

Is it possible to have both an open network portion (no password), as well as a closed (password protected) network setup with a single Time Capsule/Airport Extreme device?
I want to keep my data protected with a password access to the network, but would like to also have an open network for guests that does not always require a password just to access the internet.
    Thanks!

Can you clarify what you mean by "closed network"?  Normally a "closed" network is one in which the name of the wireless network is not visible.
If you have a dual band AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule it is possible to set up a "main" network that is visible and password protected....and a "guest" network that is "open", not requiring a password to connect.
Important.......The guest network feature cannot be enabled if you are connecting the Extreme or Time Capsule to another gateway device.....a combination modem/router that is provided by a number of service providers.

  • Airport Extreme multicast rate and closed network

    New to Airport Extreme.
Is the multicast rate the same as the TX rate on other routers? I chose 11Mbps during the setup and my Macbook was very slow. I moved it back to 2 Mbps and it sped up. Distance from macbook to airport approx. 24 inches.
Other question/ statement. I assume that the closed network portion of the setup is the same as turning off the SSID of other routers. Do I assume correctly?

goldengti, Welcome to the discussion area!
Is the multicast rate the same as the TX rate on other routers?
Sorry I don't know about other routers. The multicast rate defines the minimum data rate the base station will use and maintain the wireless connection. If you set it to 11 Mbps, the wireless connection will be broken if that data rate can't be maintained.
Other question/ statement. I assume that the closed network portion of the setup is the same as turning off the SSID of other routers. Do I assume correctly?
Yes the same useless option. Regardless of how you set this option on any router, the SSID is still broadcast between any connected clients and the base station. Therefore it only takes a few seconds to discover the SSID.

  • AE and closed network...deactivated my AE and won't hard or factory reset

Hi there. Simply set my AE to a closed network, but didn't get a chance to set name and password before AE shut down. Now I can't gain green light by unplugging and replugging, soft, hard or factory reset. Ugh! I can't locate AE on Airport Utility 1)b/c not up and running and 2) b/c is now set as closed network.
Can anybody tell me a trick to resetting AE beyond all the given resets?
Can I access what the closed network settings (name/password) may be?
    Thanks.

Sure... first I tried just unplugging but it plugged back in as amber light. Then I tried the reset button for 5 seconds. Then I tried for 10 seconds. Then I unplugged and plugged back in while holding reset button. I did this as outlined in the link above for resetting AE. With Admin utilities open the the settings named. The only time I can get a green light is the first moment it hits the socket, but it immediately goes solid amber. If I press and hold for 10 seconds I get 3 or 4 flashing green lights but it immediately goes amber (in this case, flashing amber)after the 3rd or 4th flashing green light.
When I connected AE via Ethernet cable, I had to hold reset for 10 sec to get flashing amber in order to view AE details in AirPort Admin Utilities. I get a flashing amber light and the base station is named in the Admin Utilities with the name,Ethernet (WAN), the AirPort ID and Apple Base Station V6.3. When I choose configure, I get the error message, "The AirPort Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration fo the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the configuration." I always get this far and get stuck.
Is it that the AE is not "green", or have I blocked access to reconfigure when I put it on a closed network? or both?
    Thanks...
    Tracy

  • How to find out status of JMS Connection ( connected or closed )

Is there a way to find out the status ( connected or closed ) of JMS Connection at any point of time . JMS Connection interface doesn't seem to have any isAlive( ) sort of method ?
I'm using a shared instance JMS Connection and if someone calls connection.close() on this instance the code starts flunking.

Crap isn't it! Would also be useful for creating a JMS connection pool, or for testing connections that stay open for time time and may be closed by network problems etc.
I can think of a couple of options (haven't tested them so may be flawed)
    1. Extend your vendors QueueConnectionFactory object to return a decorated Connection, which adds an isAlive() method and records internally whether someone has called .close(); This could be tricky if you use JNDI to retrieve the QCF - you'll have to bind your custom QCF and remove the old one. Much easier if you use a bean factory like Spring.
    2. You may be able to do this with the underlying vendor's API. If you choose this option put all the vendor specific code in a separate class and abstract it behind an interface. In future if you change to a JMS provider that does not support this feature, you can always change your isAlive() method return true no matter what;
    3. Wrap the JMS sender / receiver in an Adapter class. The adapter delegates send / receive methods to the wrapped class, but if it receives a JMS exception will reconnect and try again. A second JMS Exceptions should be thrown back to the client. All your client code sees is a single send / receive method as if it was using a normal JMS sender / receiver.
