Connecting to existing home network via Airport Express

I had my Macbook Pro connected to our home router which allowed me access to our home network and the internet. On this network we had connected both my MBP and my flatmates PC (which is connected directly to the router via network cable).
Through this configuration i was able to both access the internet AND access files on the PC. I have recently purchased and airport express to eliminate the need for the network cord. Since setting up the AE i have been able to connect to the internet no problem by creating a wireless network and using all the automatic settings, however in the process i have lost my ability to connect to the home network and my flatmates computer. In fact, under "networks" in finder the home network has disappeared. Also in network prefences i am getting a warning saying "The cable for Ethernet is not plugged in".
Is anyone able to tell me what im doing wrong?
thanks ....

The problem is that the AirPort Express (AX) is creating a subnet.
To prevent that, configure the AX to act as a bridge (so that it is NOT sharing a single IP address).

  • Connect to Existing Wireless Network Using Airport Express?

I would like to use my airport express to connect to an existing wireless network set up in my apartment. The wireless router (linksys) is set up in my roommate's room to his desktop. I have a printer in my room and would like to use the airport express to connect to this existing network so that my roommates and i can print wirelessly. I need to keep the printer in my room.
Is there a way to do this? Please advise.
    Thanks.

Is the LinkSys a WRT54G? If so, you have two options. If not, only the first option below is available to you:
    1. You can configure the Express to connect as a wireless client. You won't be able to connect wirelessly directly to the Express in this mode; you have to connect through the router.
    2. With the proper firmware in the WRT54G, you can set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). In this configuration, not only can the Express be used for printing and AirTunes, but it will also extend the range of your wireless network.

  • How do I extend an existing wireless network using airport express?

    Hi all,
I am trying to extend existing wireless network using airport express, my main router is Belkin

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers if you are trying to "extend" using wireless only.
It is extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a router from another manufacturer using wireless only.

  • How do i get the express to connect to existing home network

how do i get the express to connect to existing home network

You would configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a wireless client. Please check out the following Apple Support article for the details.

  • Joining an existing wireless network with airport express

Ok, am almost to the point of throwing my AX across the room
AM trying to join an existing wireless network, its from a 2Wire gateway
    one of three things happen
it won't find the AX in the first place
it recognizes it, but i can't connect to it
it goes through the configuration and when it restarts the AX, it can't reconnect to either the router or the AX and it fails. if this happens i can't reconnect to my wireless network without deleting it and re-adding.
it doesn't show up in my available wireless networks at all
protected via WEP, and i have tried using all the security options.

The directions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.
Are you using MAC address access control in addition to WEP?
Turn off WEP and see if that makes a difference?
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.
Choosing a password for networks that use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058
WEP is now considered not to be secure and therefore it is advised you use WPA.
"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • Configuring BT HomeHub 4 on home network with AirPort Express & Time Capsule

I have changed my broadband provider from Sky to BT in the UK and hence from a Sky router to a BT HomeHub 4 router but can't get the new router to work as before with my home network and an extended wireless network running off an AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.  I had the Sky router with the wireless network off acting as the DNS server and the AE and TC set to connect using DHCP, Create a Wireless Network and the Router Mode set to Off (ie Bridge mode).
I am not an expert but I think the issue could be due to the different BT hub IP settings (Hub IP Gateway Address and DHCP Network Range).  From discussion forums I am also not clear whether it is better to use DHCP, Static or PPPoE settings for the AE and TC.
Has anyone managed to configure a BT HomeHub with a home network and an AE/TC for running the wireless network?

There is really very little difference in the setup between the sky hub and the BThub.
BUT the apple routers do not take kindly to sudden changes of management.
Reset both to factory and start over.
The TC or AE plugged into the BThub will still be in bridge mode with create a wireless network.. and the Extreme working in extend wireless mode.. unless you have them tied together with ethernet. (or visa versa depending on your layout.. AE in bridge and TC extending.. same difference).
You can just leave the BT hub wireless on.. or turn it off as you like. Setup can be a bit tricky as the airport utility seems to insist on the router plugged into the Hub taking over as main router.. this is wrong.. but it is hard to get it to do what you want.. so just finish the setup in the airport utility then manually edit the setup to do what you want.
    Or do it fully manually.
I gave a full set of instructions here.
Linking AirPort Extreme to my bt home hub
    Note:
You have express in the title and extreme in the text.. but it is same thing from setup point of view.

  • Having trouble connecting to existing home network

I have US Robotics Wireless Turbo Access Point & Router. We have a mixture of PCs and Macs that connect without problems. Router is set Mac Filter Disabled and Wep disabled.
I have a new imac 17inch with Airport Extreme.Using Network Diagnostics the network name is found but then says it needs a network password. Box asking for Wireless Security - Wep Password.
We have older imac, ibook, a new powerbook all connecting without any problems.
Help appreciated as I am a convert from pc and excited to get on.
It may be relevant that during set up when it failed to connect to our network by name, I clicked on 'wireless'. It obviously found a connection of sorts and set up. I was puzzled why access was so slow. I assumed it was connected to out own network. Thank you.
Imac 17inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Using US Robotics Wireless Turbo Access Point & Router

Hi Duane. Thank you for responding so quickly. On Wednesday I bought a Mac Mini from our new Apple Store here in UK. It was dead-on-arrival. Took it back and decided to go for the imac to avoid any further frustration and go completely mac.
It is definitely looking at my network. If I turn the router off it disappears from the drop down menu at top of screen. It reappears when I plug the router back on. So it is recognising that the network exists. When I try through System Preferences, Network, it lists my network - when clicked there is no signal level.
I get 'There wan error joining the AirPort network etc'.
When I try through Assistance I get message 'Enter AirPort information .........stating my network requires password etc.
I am logged onto my router via my pc and WEP is definitely disabled. I am thinking I have another faulty machine.

  • Extend existing wireless network with airport express..impossible?

I have tried to extend my existing wireless network with an airport express, but it seemd that I always need a ethernetcable...apple support insured me it is possible but the airport utility software only allows me to extend using a cable it seems....

    Couple of thoughts here.......
The AirPort Express will only extend a wireless network if you have another Apple router providing the wireless network to be extended.
Is your "main" wireless router an Apple product?  If yes, what model number do you have?
It would also help if we could get the model number of the AirPort Express. Some older versions are not capable of extending a wireless network.

  • Printer not recognised on network via Airport Express

I have recently purchased a Canon MP630 and installed all the drivers etc onto my Mac. I can print from it easily from my Mac via a USB connection. However, Im hoping to connect it to my Airport Express via the USB. I have done that, but the printer isnt being recognised and I cant print.
Can someone explain what to do, to fix this problem.
    Thanks

HP Jetdirect is what Apple calls IP printing to port 9100. It's a standard protocol which your printer supports. We often recommend it because it uses a specific port (9100) rather than using a queue name. Using a device-specific queue name is required in the "standards" documents for LPR and IPP (yes I realize OS X claims that a blank gives a default queue name).
    In short - try it.

  • Trouble printing to Epson Workforce 435 via airport express network

We have an Epson Workforce 435 printer that connects wirelessly to our home network via Airport Express.  After we switched to AT&T, we could no longer print from our Windows 7 PC connected to the network via Airport as well.  Our Macbook air works just fine.  The printer's network status sheet says it is connected, but it's like our computer can't find it on the network.  Can't ping the printer's IP address either.

Okay, I have checked the settings on the AX - it is set up to be 802.11b/g compatible, so that doesn't appear to be the problem.
I had a friend come over with her macbook - she was able to detect the wireless network, but wasn't able to connect to it, even when I gave her the password. Does this help diagnose the problem?
Here is additional information about how the AX is currently configured:
In the Airport tab in AirPort Utility:
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
    Radio Mode: 802.11b (802.11b/g compatible)
    Channel: 1
    Wireless security: WEP
MAC Address Access Control: Not Enabled
In the Internet tab in Airport Utility:
    Connect using: Ethernet
    Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    Ethernet WAN port: Automatic
    Connection sharing: Off (Bridge mode)
I have tried turning wireless security off, but that didn't help the problem. I have also tried turning MAC Address Access Control to Timed Access, inputted the MAC address of the printer, and gave it permission to access the network all day, everyday, but this didn't work either. I have looked at changing the connection sharing settings, but I don't really understand what I'm doing here, so I am reluctant to mess with things much. This seems like the most promising potential solution?
    Thanks!

  • I have a PVR which supports DLNA connected to my home network.  I want to access files on my MacBook from the PVR.  I understand that my MacBook doesn't support DLNA. Is there any 3rd party  software that I can install on my MacBook to provide DLNA?

    Hi,
    Can anyone help me please.
I have a Personal Video Recorder (Humax HDR-1010S), which supports DLNA, connected to my home network via Wi-Fi.
I want to play music from iTunes and view photos from iPhoto from my MacBook (which is also connected to the home network) via the PVR / TV / Home Cinema sound system.  I understand that my MacBook (running OS X Mavericks) doesn't support DLNA server.
Is there any 3rd party  software that I can install on my MacBook to provide DLNA server?
    Thanks,

My recollection is that the iPhoto library has some fairly robust protections to prevent inadvertent or even deliberate changes being made that might have unwanted consequences. I'll take alook at my setup and let you know if I can see anything that might help you. Even if you get Serviio to "see" the iPhoto library, it almost ceratinly won't show the album structure and names. What I did is to export each iPhoto album to a standard folder with the appropriate folder name. These I keep on an external backup disc and Serviio can see these without trouble.

  • Cannot connect my Macbook air to my Airport Express

Unable to get my new Macbook Air to connect tmy existing wifi that uses Airport Express. It just timesout after about 5 seconds. My mew iphone connected straight away.

connect is in the eye of the beholder
connect can be the appletv being able to access the shared itunes lib of the macbook air if the macbook air's firewall is set to allow it and if itunes on the macbook air is set to share the itunes lib at all
connect can be the macbook air being able to use airplay to play music out of the appletv's speakers as one would an airplay express
or airplay mirror which mean displaying the macbook air's screen on the tv using appletv
if the device is supported in that way you can read here
