Connecting to fileserver

Hello out there,
I run a network with two G4 Servers running OS9 and Appleshare IP v. 6.3.3, linked to similar G4 OS9 workstations, and OSX eMacs and Minis running Panther and Tiger. Suddenly the Tiger machines cannot log on to either file server. Both Ping and Traceroute indicate a clear path, but I get this error when I click the "Connect" button: "Conection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." Panther and OS9 machines still work fine. Is there a plist I need to trash?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Can't open a document linked in a PDF. "This document tries to establish a connection". What can I do?

When I try to open open a document which is linked in a PDF(I opened the PDF with Adobe Reader) there comes a safety warning:
This document tries to establish a connection:
    file://(fileserver)
Is this Website confidential, click on "allow". Is the website not confidential click on "Block".
How can I set the memory location as confidential, so that this warning doesn't come anymore?
    Many thanks.

No, the icon is the old one that got the new ones graphical appearence but is still link to the old Pages 09.
To make certain you open the document in the application you want use Right click (CTRL click) insted on the document and choose the Pages version you want.

  • No authentication prompt using DFS links to fileserver into another domain with no trusts between both domains

Users  , Fileservers  and DFS root with DFS links in Domain A all work fine.
each users from Domain A have also credentials and passwords from Domain B
There is NO trust between Domain A and Domain B, both Domains are in different site connected with VPN-tunnel.
Projectdata is stored at fileservers in both Domains. Now DFS links are added in the Domain A to a fileserver from Domain B
When users from Domain A connects to fileserver in Domain B  first he/she gets a prompt to authenticated, then DFS link to the fileserver in  Domain B work.
When users just use DFS link they get a prompt "not accessible" + "Logon failure unknown user or bad password"
No prompt is given to users from Domain A to enter the credential for Domain B.
We cannot created a trust between these 2 Domains due other policy's

    Hi,
According to your description, there is no trust between domain A and domain B, right?
Based on my research, if there is no trust between domains/forests, then it is not possible
to share information across domain boundaries, because without trust, no authentication traffic can be passed across domain/forest.
That is why the user cannot access the file he has rights to access across domain.

  • Has anyone put the RAR Background Job Spool on a different server?

We are on GRC 5.3 SP 13.
Has anyone put the RAR Background Job Spool File Location (assigned in the Miscellaneous configuration section) on a server different than the one that the GRC Frontend/Java system is on?
I currently have it assigned to a folder on the GRC server, but it is running out of space.  I am having a problem getting the users to delete old reports as they say they need to keep them for internal Audit controls.  They are also resisting downloading the reports (more work for them).  I have been told that we cannot easily increase the file space on the GRC server (would basically have to purchase more storage and rebuild the server).
I was thinking about moving the folder over to our virtual storage area, were file size can be more easily expanded.  I haven't found any documentation that says the folder has to be on the GRC server, but I also haven't seen any examples of where it has been put on a different server.
Has anyone done this, and did you run into any problems?
    Thanks.

    Hello Bob,
I got your point. Probably there's no recommendation about this, because the recomended practise is to delete or archive the spools as suggested in note : Note 1511027 - Periodic clean up of spool files
If you have a requirement to keep these files "online", I think the option to save them to a network drive is fine. I haven't tried it for this specific scenario. You have to take into account:
    - Specific user to connect to FileServer
    - Availability of the FileServer. If the FS is down, the RAR job will cancel.
    - Performance. I mean, write to a local disk is not the same to write to a network drive. This point is very difficult to measure,   because it depends on a lot of things like network speed, server load, etc.
Maybe someone has already implemented it and gives you more hints.
    Cheers,
    Diego.

  • Is It Possible to Add a Fileserver to a DFS Replication Group Without Connectivity to FSMO Roles Holder DC But Connectivity to Site DC???

I apologize in advance for the rambling novella, but I tried to include as many details ahead of time as I could.
I guess like most issues, this one's been evolving for a while, it started out with us trying to add a new member
to a replication group that's on a subnet without connectivity to the FSMO roles holder. I'll try to describe the
layout as best as I can up front.
The AD only has one domain & both the forest & domain are at 2008R2 function level. We've got two sites defined in
Sites & Services, Site A is an off-site datacenter with one associated subnet & Site B with 6 associated subnets, A-F.
The two sites are connected by a WAN link from a cable provider. Subnets E & F at Site B have no connectivity to Site A
across that WAN, only what's available through the front side of the datacenter through the public Internet. The network
engineering group involved refuses to route that WAN traffic to those two subnets & we've got no recourse against that
decision; so I'm trying to find a way to accomplish this without that if possible.
The FSMO roles holder is located at Site A. I know that I can define a Site C, add Subnets E & F to that site, & then
configure an SMTP site link between Sites A & C, but that only handles AD replication, correct? That still wouldn't allow me, for example,
to enumerate DFS namespaces from subnets E & F, or to add a fileserver on either of those subnets as a member to an existing
DFS replication group, right? Also, root scalability is enabled on all the namespace shares.
Is there a way to accomplish both of these things without transferring the FSMO roles from the original DC at Site A to, say,
the bridgehead DC at Site B?
When the infrastructure was originally setup by a former analyst, the topology was much more simple & everything was left
under the Default First Site & no sites/subnets were setup until fairly recently to resolve authentication issues on
Subnets E & F... I bring this up just to say, the FSMO roles holder has held them throughout the build out & addition of
all sorts of systems & I'm honestly not sure what, if anything, the transfer of those roles will break.
I definitely don't claim to be an expert in any of this, I'll be the first to say that I'm a work-in-progress on this AD design stuff,
I'm all for R'ing the FM, but frankly I'm dragging bottom at this point in finding the right FM. I've been digging around
on Google, forums, & TechNet for the past week or so as this has evolved, but no resolution yet.
On VMs & machines on subnets E & F when I go to DFS Management -> Namespace -> Add Namespaces to Display..., none show up

I run a dfsutil /pktinfo it shows all the shares that I've accessed so far.
So either I'm doing something wrong, or, for some random large, multinational company, every sunbet & fileserver one wants
to add to a DFS Namespace has to be able to contact the FSMO roles holder? Or, are those ADs broken down with a child domain
for each Site & a FSMO roles holder for that child domain is located in each site?

    Hi,
A DC in siteB should helpful. I still not see any article mentioned that a DFS client have to connect to PDC every time trying to access a DFS domain based namespace.
Please see following article. I pasted a part of it below:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782417(v=ws.10).aspx
Domain controllers play numerous roles in DFS:
Domain controllers store DFS metadata in Active Directory about domain-based namespaces. DFS metadata consists of information about entire namespace, including the root, root targets, links, link targets, and settings. By default, root servers
that host domain-based namespaces periodically poll the domain controller acting as the primary domain controller (PDC) emulator master to obtain an updated version of the DFS metadata and store this metadata in memory.
So Other DC needs to connect PDC for an updated metadata.
Whenever an administrator makes a change to a domain-based namespace, the
change is made on the domain controller acting as the PDC emulator master and is then replicated (via Active Directory replication) to other domain controllers in the domain.
    Domain Name Referral Cache
A domain name referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the local domain, all trusted domains in the forest, and domains in trusted forests. A
DFS client requests a domain name referral from a domain controller to determine the domains in which the clients can access domain-based namespaces.
    Domain Controller Referral Cache
A domain controller referral contains the NetBIOS and DNS names of the domain controllers for the list of domains it has cached. A DFS client requests a domain controller referral from a domain controller (in the client’s domain)
to determine which domain controllers can provide a referral for a domain-based namespace.
    Domain-based Root Referral Cache
The domain-based root referrals in this memory cache do not store targets in any particular order. The targets are sorted according to the target selection method only when requested from the client. Also, these referrals are based on DFS metadata stored
on the local domain controller, not the PDC emulator master.
Thus it seems to be acceptable to have a disconnect between sites shortly when cache is still working on siteB.

  • Connecting to NAS / Fileserver caused Mavericks to hang

My wife accidentally upgraded our new Macbook air to Mavericks and then I was unable to access my NAS / fileserver without totally locking up the macbook. Any attempt to connect to the NAS caused the finder to stop responding and required that I manually power cycle the laptop (by holding down the power button).
Anyway,  I seem to have cleared the problem up by removing all of my shortcuts to the NAS (on the desktop, on the dock, in my login items)

No, that would be too easy!
The finder mount only works when the UID is the same on both machines. So it still works fine with my Linux server where I'm able to set the UID and GID. That's what the NAS device was supposed to replace.
I did get the share to mount but can't copy files. They fail. Using SMB many of the folders and files show up as locked.

  • Weirdness connecting a mac to a windows fileserver

    Hi All,
I've got some weirdness with my mac connecting to a windows file share. It seems to only pull up documents modified three months ago or later. For instance, if I create a new excel sheet on my windows computer and save it on the file server, other macs and windows machines can see the file. If i connect to the file server on my mac, I don't see the file. It's almost like my mac is only pulling up a cached version of the files from a while ago. Has anyone heard or this or how I should go about troubleshooting this?
I've tried reconnecting to the server and it had no impact. The only other article I was able to find mentioned that the mac caches files periodically via mobile sync http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/282342-offline-files-on-a-mac however, I am not able to verify this because of the error "securityagent may only be invoked by apple software" http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1723409

  • Fileserver error when switching internet connections

    Hi,
I have a MacBook pro which I use at home and at the office. At the office I have a file-server with multiple access levels and folders. I dragged to folders of my interest in my Dock and now I access the files directly from my dock.
However, when I'm leaving the office, I put my laptop into sleep mode and wake it up when I get home. Next day when I'm back to the office and try to access the file-server I get a Windows like error:
    "This application cannot be launched.
    -35"
The only way to access the shared files is to restart the computer, but that defeats the purpose of Sleep Mode.
    Thank you

The only way to access the shared files is to restart the computer, but that defeats the purpose of Sleep Mode.
In the finder sidebar eject your networked folders prior to putting the mac to sleep it just takes a couple of clicks.
out of interest are these apple sharepoints or samba sharepoints your connecting to?
Apple sharepoints always reconnect after waking my MBP from sleep.

  • Window 8.1 system unable to access network shares via VPN connection

Is there something inherent to Windows 8.1 that prevents it from accessing shares on a domain?
I know that it cannot join a domain, but does that also mean that it cannot access shares which are on a domain?
My problem is that I have several user that are running windows 8.1 that are connecting to our network via a VPN.
The users have domain accounts but their computers as windows 8.1 cannot joined to the domain.
So to access network shares they have to use their domain credentials to create a VPN connection.
Once connected the user can RDP to systems on the domain using their domain accounts, so I know that their user names/passwords and permissions are correct. They can access these systems using the computer name, so I don't feel that I have a DNS issue.
They can see the shares on our file server, but when they try to access their departments shared file, they receive an access denied message. There are a few shares that are completely wide open, shared to all users and all departments but they cannot access
    those shares either.
You can ping the file server, from the the client when they are connected to the VPN but you just cannot access any of the shares.
    So...
I am thinking that it has something to do with windows 8.1 and not being able to join a domain, but I cannot find anything to explicitly support this thought.
Other users running a variety different OS (windows 7, OSX, Linux) can all access the shares without any problems via the VPN, so I am a little stumped.

I have done some more testing and oddly enough I can map a drive if I use the IPaddress, but not the computer name, when checking the check box "connect using different credentials"and providing they users domain credentials.
This seems to point to a DNS issue, one would think, but I can hit the file share server by name \\fileserver.dev.lan
I can see all the shares, so dns seems to be fine right?
So I don't understand why I can map a drive using do the IPaddress and not the machine name, but yet I can see and ping the server by name?
When I try to create a mapped drive by machine name I receive the following message:
    Windows cannot access \\fileserver.dev.lan\all
You do not have permissions to access \\fileserver.dev.lan. contact your network administrator  to request access.
But if I use the \\x.x.x.x\all using the very same user and password I get connected with no problem.
This only seems to happen on windows 8.1, which leads me to think that has something to do with OS.
I am thinking about upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, but I don't want to go though the hassle and expanse is the OS is not the problem.

  • How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation?

How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation? We're waiting for our server to arrive and in the interum we're using a Pegasus 2 R6 attached to an iMac running Mavericks as our fileserver. It's been sketchy, the connection to the server being dropped once in a while or the inability to mount the drive after a week of success. The Pegasus we're using now will be attached to a server once it arrives. For now I need to figure what's coausing trouble before I commit to this being our main storage as planned. The data is backed up every night so I'm not worried, its the usability issues. 5-7 people are mounting this drive and opening/saving at the same time. Is there a limit to Maverick's fileserving ability that may be causing this? Understandable if so.

The file server in the client version of OS X has a default limit of 10 simultaneous connections. That limit can be raised by installing OS X Server, or lowered by setting a hidden preference. Assuming you've done neither, you may be able to solve the problem temporarily by stopping and restarting file sharing in the Sharing preference pane, or permanently by setting another hidden preference on the server to break idle connections quickly.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool YES
Stop and restart file sharing. To reverse the change, run this command in the same way:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool NO
Credit for this solution to ASC member suter:
this file server will not allow any additional users to log on

  • Win7 clients can't connect to OSX Server after 10.10.2 and Server 4.0.3 update

I'm troubleshooting an annoying issue with our Yosemite fileserver at work and hoping someone has suggestions.
The server is running Yosemite, clients a mix of MacOS from 10.6 through 10.10, and some Windows 7 boxes.
With the server on 10.10.1 and the just-prior version of Server (4.0, I assume; were 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 ever available to the public?), everything basically worked. Last night, I updated the server to 10.10.2 and 4.0.3.  Nothing unusual during the update apart from a bunch of spotlight indexing processes running as individual users sucking up a lot of CPU for the first few minutes, which may be normal.
However, now almost all the Macs are fine, but the Windows clients are all getting permissions errors when trying to connect. Even weirder, one Yosemite client was also getting an error on login when trying to connect via SMB, both on 10.10.1 and 10.10.2; the same computer connecting via AFP works fine.
I'm inclined to think that it has something to do with the switch to SMB3 mentioned in the changelog for Server 4.0.3, although I'm not 100% sure that didn't exist under 4.0 as well, and if this is the problem I'm not sure what to try to fix it.
I'm already aware of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LmCompatibilityLevel needing to be at least 3 (or non-existent, so it defaults to 3 on Win7) to work with Yosemite; these clients already have that registry key set. Suggestions?

Addendum:  I just realized that the Windows users *can* see their own home folder when they connect to the server without the main share I'm trying to mount specified.  So it's not that they're completely unable to connect, it's just that the server isn't offering them any of the main share when they do.
When I tried mounting the server from 10.6 manually forcing SMB (with an admin user, no less), I got the same thing--just my user folder, none of the main shared volumes...

    Hi Matthew,
Unfortunately a lot of the intricacies of DFS leave my head as soon as I’m done with a particular design or troubleshooting situation but from memory, having direct connectivity to the PDC emulator for a particular domain is the key to managing domain based
    DFS.
Have a read of this article for the differences between “Optimize for consistency” vs “Optimize for scalability”:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737400(v=ws.10).aspx
In brief, I’d say they mean:
In consistency mode the namespace servers always poll the PDCe for the latest and greatest information on the namespaces they are hosting.
In scalability mode the namespace servers should poll the closest DC for information on the namespaces they are hosting.
The key piece of information in that article about scalability mode is: “Updates are still made to the namespace object in Active Directory on the PDC emulator, but namespace servers do not discover those changes until the updated namespace object replicates
(using Active Directory replication) to the closest domain controller for each namespace server.”
I read that as saying you can have a server running DFS-N as long as it has connectivity to a DC but if you want to make changes, do them from a box that has direct connectivity to the PDCe. Then let AD replication float those changes out to your other DCs
where the remote DFS-N server will eventually pick them up. Give it a try and see how you get on.
That being said, you may want to double check that you have configured the most appropriate FSMO role placement in your environment's AD design:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754889(v=ws.10).aspx
And a DFS response probably wouldn’t be complete without an AskDS link:
