Connecting to High Speed Internet - I am not a Crook!

Ok, first of all, you're going to have to hear me out. I think technically what I'm trying to do is illegal, but in the real world I think its perfectly justified...
I have cable internet at home that I pay for and enjoy. My computer is the only computer in the house and thus the only one using the service. Right now I am house sitting with my girlfriend and have brought my computer with me, thus leaving my cable internet hookup behind at home unused. I'm connecting to the internet here with a dialup connection account that the owners of the house have and the slowness is driving me crazy.
I thought that if I brought my cable modem with me and hooked their cable into it I would be able to get access to the high speed internet - which I think I am justified in doing since I am paying for the service and it is going unused at home. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be working. The cable modem has a green light for "cable" but nothing for "data", and everytime I try to go to a website it either asks me to dial in to the dialup service or work offline.
At home I know that we have the same cable for our TV as we do for my internet because in my room where the computer normally is I have a small TV (for viewing with Premiere) that we also pay to have a cable connection into and the cable guy merely split the cable to go both into my computer and my TV.
Is there something they would normally have to switch on outside to make the cable work for the internet as well? I'm not interested in messing with that, I'm just wondering why its not working here.
Darcy

Oddly enough, I was in paying for my cable and asked (in a roundabout way) about the possibilities of hooking up at another house and what was the deal about splitting the line and getting basic cable without paying for it.
The answers I got were basically...
When you sign up for cable modem, you are renting a port, that prot can go anywhere, it's not stealing if you only use it from one place and can only get detected if it's on in two places.
When you subscribe to cable modem, the basic cable is inherent in the signal. In my case (comcast), you can opt for a package that includes basic cable and the internet service for the same price as the internet port alone. They know people split the cable and hook it up to their TV, some installers go ahead and do that as a service. If the installer runs two cables into the house, it's simply split upline somewhere, it doesn't really accomplish anything.
It was almost like talking to the limo driver in the Wayne's World movie. Too much information...

  • Upgrade to High Speed Internet Enhanced : Not working

I recently upgraded my internet connection to High Speed Internet Enhanced (7.1 Mbps to 15 Mbps) from my old plan which had a speed of 1Mbps to 3.1Mbps. The order status indicates that the service has been activated. But still I am experiencing only the old speed (approx 2.5 Mbps only). Can anyone help?

Could you post your modem's Transceiver Statistics for us? If you don't know how to get them, finding your modem make and model and posting it up will help us help you get them.
One key thing to lay out on the table, if it isn't a stats issue it's possible 3Mbps/768kbps is your max speed due to your line coming from a Remote Terminal or DSLAM rather than the CO itself. Remotes are currently capped at 3Mbps, with the exception of a few meant to act as Mini-COs due to the lack of capacity going to them, and especially due to some of them being quite old. This is something for a person with the right level of access to the network or your account to find out. I've got someone who will check and turn up the speed if possible but we need to see the stats first.

  • I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install?

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • How can I stop spam from someone called AT&T High Speed Internet? I do not know what the email address is.

I am receiving 100's of spam emails. They are all advertising different types of products but they all say they are from AT&T High Speed Internet. I have used the junk filter on them but it does not pick them up as junk. I have to do it manually each time. I have contacted my UVerse provider and they cannot assist because it is getting through Yahoo to Thunderbird. They say that it is a problem that I will have to have assistance from Thunderbird to resolve so that I can have this listed as junk and will not have to do this manually. I am at my wit's end. Please, please help me!

Yahoo has its own junk mail filter (Spamguard), which you should confirm is enabled:
    * [https://help.yahoo.com/kb/mail/stop-spam-yahoo-mail-sln3227.html Mail Help | - SLN3227 - Stop spam in Yahoo Mail]
The significance of this is that marking messages as junk in Thunderbird probably isn't integrated with Yahoo's system, so Yahoo may not be getting trained to block them. You might need to go into Yahoo from time to time and mark accumulated junk as spam.
Separately, there are solutions for filtering spam on your computer as the mail is downloaded from Yahoo. Thunderbird has a built-in filter, as described here: [[Thunderbird and Junk / Spam Messages]]. However, if that isn't as effective you would like, there are third party products as well.

  • Neighbors Have High Speed Internet but Systems Says Not Available

    Hello,
I have been trying for the past week to get High Speed Internet with Verizon.  Two times I received an email saying… Although your line qualified for High Speed Internet service during the initial phases of the order process, unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with Internet access on your line ending in 0602 .
I live in a small subdivision on the outskirts of Colonial Beach, Virginia with approximately 500 homes.
I have two neighbors, one on each side of me i one  would be the closest to the substation) and another neighbor about one block past my house.  The second neighbor drives past my house every day to get to their house.
I spoke with a local Verizon employee who told me the computer was turning down the High Speed Internet because of distance and that I needed to have someone at the local office, over-ride the automatic turn down so that it would be installed.  After the second computer automated turn down, I spoke with Eric – he said to give the next tech this information – Acct Number XXXXXX  Order Number XXXXX at the DSL Technical support so we could get this resolved.  The DSL Technical support guy was NOT interested in obtaining the account number or Order number Eric gave and said either the Router was filled or I was too far from the Loop.  I explained the neighbors and it still didnot seem to matter.  He was foreign and we did seem to have a significant language barrier.  He then transferred me back to Sales.
Over and over I requested to speak with the actual Local Office in Warsaw, VA so I could be given a reasonable explanation.   I spoke with a woman who said the two neighbors were closer to the loop than me.  When I asked how this was possible if I am in the center of the two she said maybe it was because of a curve in the road?  She also said she was the local office but was not able to tell me where that office was located so obviously it was not the actual "local" office.
How can I get someone to physically come out and determine why I cannot get High Speed Internet?  Who can I contact to make a formal complaint.
    Thank you for any input.

  • Wireless high speed internet connection

I would like to know if somewhere we can find a kind of PCS card for wireless high speed internet connection, but for power books and iBooks G4?
I'm living in mexico City and one company (iusacell) is offering the service but just with PCS cards for PCs, but no for macs.

Unfortunately, the 12" PowerBooks and both size iBooks lack the required PCMCIA slot for such cards, so they cannot be used at all.
The 15" and 17" PowerBooks do have a PCMCIA slot, but if your network doesn't supply Mac software or drivers, it probably can't be used.

  • Upgrading to high speed internet enhanced with budget local phone service?

Searched for this issue but can't locate anything on here.  I have gotten conflicting information on this by phone and online chat.  When I click on "Order Now" for High Speed Internet Enhanced (29.99) it takes me to the bundle page where it wants me to add TV service and upgrade my phone.  All I want to do is upgrade to enhanced from the regular High Speed (19.99).
I don't know which dept I was connected to 1st on the phone, but her system wasn't allowing her to order it for me.  She referred me to E center who wasn't sure and asked the online chat people sitting near him who said I have to upgrade my phone as well to get enhanced?
Is this true?  I need to have a regional calling plan to upgrade to High Speed Internet Enhanced?  Instead of paying an extra 10 bucks a month, it jumps to an extra 25 to 30 per month.
Does anyone else have budget phone service with High Speed Enhanced?

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
For example this what I saw when I was using Verizon
        news.giganews.com
traceroute to 71.242.*.* (71.242.*.*), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
        1 gw1-g-vlan201.dca.giganews.com (216.196.98.4) 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms
        2 ash-bb1-link.telia.net (213.248.70.241) 39 ms 7 ms 7 ms
        3 TenGigE0-2-0-0.GW1.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.125.125.41) 4 ms 4 ms GigabitEthernet2-0-0.GW8.IAD8.ALTER.NET (63.65.76.189) 4 ms
        4 so-7-1-0-0.PHIL-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net (130.81.20.137) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        5 P3-0-0.PHIL-DSL-RTR11.verizon-gni.net (130.81.13.170) 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms
        6 static-71-242-*-*.phlapa.east.verizon.net (71.242.*.*) 32 ms 32 ms 33 ms
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
#3 If you don't know how to get that info:
    a) What is the brand and model of your modem?
    b) If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to it: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
#4 If you have a RJ-45 WAN port router connected to the modem, even if you know how to get the Transceiver Statistics from the modem: What is the brand and model of the RJ-45 WAN port router?
If you are the original poster (OP) and your issue is solved, please remember to click the "Solution?" button so that others can more easily find it. If anyone has been helpful to you, please show your appreciation by clicking the "Kudos" button.

  • E52 - High Speed internet

    Hi All
Strange problem here, i am using my e52 to connect to the internet through my PC. When i use 3g, everything works. As soon as i enable high speed 3.5g (HSDPA) the following happens:
    * I can surf the internet for 1 - 2megs, then it stops working (dns problems)
    * Skype continues to work and i can chat and make video calls
    * tracert fails after the first hop
I called my service provider thinking there was a problem with the HSDPA network in the area, they send someone out, he tested with a USB modem and it worked well, he also checked all the settings .ect on the phone/pc & left with a confused look on his face. We also swapped SIM cards.
checked other things like good signal, latest software patches, drivers
Any one have any other ideas besides sending the phone in?

        @hadimassa
What you have said is true as well but not going in to the technical details  of telecommunication,
from a layman's point of view,
personal observation, my e52 maximum speed is like 48KB/S ( .35 to .5 mb/s) downloading give or take.
Enabling the 3.5G features on the phone does not increase my download speed but instead may be slower.
Using the same GSM provider USB dongle, speeds can be above 1mb/s ADVERTISED UP TOP TO 3.2mb/s. using form the same location
I firmly believe GSM operators lock down the speed to mobile handsets at least in Tmoble  (UK)
My brothers 3network speed is way faster.(3.5g)
So I just think if you buy an internet package form them with the high speed enabled you may be able to utilize that speed unless they lock down the Mac address for the USB stick.
But again depends on the area were you are and the availability of such high speed internet.

  • No High Speed Internet AT ALL from ANY CARRIER

In the area of Old Church in Hanover county I live in we do not have high speed internet from any carrier.    I telecommute and must use VPN to establish a secure connection to my company's network, so Satellite is not an option.  The Mobile Broadband signal is so weak I've had to purchase a amplifier and antenna to boost the signal to make it bearable.   There is a switch station just a mile down the road - why can't the equipment be put in there so we can get DSL?

I do have wireless mobile broadband, but the signal is very  weak so high speed it ain't.  For whatever reason the county (or someone) to date has not allowed towers in my area so what I'm getting is coming from over 7 miles away.   It's tolerable with a Wilson antenna and amplifier, and there's still a things we can't do, but at least I don't drop my VPN connection multiple times a day.  I have to use VPN because I work from home - otherwise I would have probably gone with a Satellite ISP.     I did check into the T-1 and the cheapest price is still about 400 bucks.   If it's split 3 ways its still 133 a month and I'm not sure I want to go that way.
It would be great is they put the equipment in the switch, and maybe I can get some of the neighbors to together to start campaigning for it.

  • High Speed Internet? That's False

High speed internet? That's false. I ordered this "bundle" thinking both I and my family would enjoy high quality internet connection and a good phone service. One that I can count on? That's yet another false statement. I must admit, the phone service is great; however, the internet is simply a joke. One cannot connect to anything. This is not something that has happened once or twice, this is daily. One simply tries to connect to simple things such as Google, and it won't work. For example: my son tries to play games, whenever he tries to, it won't connect. This is not what I'm paying for. This hasn't been happening for a day, a month, this has been happening for years. Since the day I got this. Don't bombard me with answers as if this is a problem on my side. If no one is willing to help, and solve this, I will be switching to Charter rather quickly.

    Hi Dr. Alejandsur,
I could not agree with you more.  Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for fixing the problem.  But, then, neither does Verizon.  I know a few people who have Charter and are happy with it.  Maybe I should check into it too.

  • High Speed Internet Install Hangs

Another user already posted this problem but I seem unable to reply to that thread.
I am having *exactly* the same problem, namely:
Today is my Service Ready Date. I opened a browser and got the 'activation page', entered my line number, then got to download the verizon high speed internet installer for mac. Once I opened this I got to set up a username/password, then the installer went through a series of checks, and finally gets to 'saving settings for *******@verizon.net', where it says 'Please Wait, This step could take up to 3 minutes'. And it just hangs at that point. I waited for an hour and nothing happened. I tried again later with the 'resume installation' alias that was created when I quit the installer, and it jumps straight to that step as expected, but hangs again.
What could be causing this? I'm using a mac with MacOS 10.6, the modem is a Westell 7500, and the plan I've chosen is the 3MBs.
    Thanks for any help!
Note: I copied the original poster's description of the problem because it is accurate in my case, revising only the OS version to reflect my own.

Update: 12 hours later.  Still not solved.
    Utterly appalling.
After 20 minutes on hold waiting for a second support chat, then a 20 minute chat during which the rep repeatedly asked for information I'd already given, and then congratulated me and told me the service was working (it is not) ... the rep finally conceded they could not help me and said a Mac rep would call me on the phone in "20-30 minutes."
It's 90 minutes later.  No follow up, no call.
On my own I have re-started modem, re-started computer, trashed preferences for that Verizon activation software.
    The last seemed to help.
Each time it got a little further.
Eventually it assured me I had completed the activation process. It gave me a confirmation.
Meantime Verizon has also e-mailed me saying congratulations, my service is up.
But when I try to connect to any page through the DSL in a browser, I keep being re-directed the Verizon activate / welcome page (which, believe me, I am pretty tired of seeing by now.)
    https://activate.verizon.net/launch/welcome
... if I follow those steps, it tried to download the software *again* and start all over.
Seems I am in an inescapable loop.  Can I really be the only one who's had this problem?
I have now three times "activated" my internet service and still I am re-directed to the "activate" page.
I can only say, at this point, I wish there were an alternative to this terrible company.

  • Hourly disconnects from High Speed Internet Enhanced

Hello all, I have verizon high speed internet enhanced and have not had any problems at all with the internet since I had a verizon tech. install it. However, since 4 days ago my actiontec GT740 WGB router has been constantly disconnecting from the internet on an hourly basis. It happens up to 5 times an hour, with the disconnectiong lasting about 10-15 seconds. Now, this may not provide much of a problem, but I bought the internet basicly for my xbox 360. I cannot complete full games online versus other players because of these interuptions 'causes me to lose connection and ultimately lose the game.
Verizon HSI Enhanced download - 10.1mbps
Verizon HSI Enhanced upload - 0.8mbps
I have only had my verizon for a few weeks now, but up until now it has been working extremely well. I'm a bit disappointed now, because I have read and heard of this problem, and was hoping not to encounter it.

    Hello,
When you notice the disconnect, are the router lights turned off? Outside of playing games on the XBOX does your computer lose a connection as well?

  • Airport, high speed Internet problem

    Hello guys
Let me tell you what i'm was facing before the change happened and the issue started.
I was connecting my macbook pro 13 to my 5mg speed Internet thro the router wirelessly. it was going perfect with no pre loading the page. Also i connect my ps3 to it and my phone, and still no problems. however, i wanted more speed, so i upgrade my Internet with 50mg speed. the first day it was going amazing while i'm connecting wirelessly. even speedtest.net was giving me the full speed. but the second day it started. it takes so long to open a page, youtube for example. even when its opened it doesn't show me the pre picture of some videos . and when i open the video its take soo much to pre load the clip, i mean not even loading the clip , but when its start it can run 1080 with no problem.
So when i called the Internet provider they tolled me to open any page and run youtube clips on my ipod, it's runs faster then my macbook pro. not even a second to run a youtube clip. and they said its may be my airport card having an issue running a fast high speed Internet. even thou when i connect my macbook by wire its goes fine but with less time to pre-load the page. but still it looks like running on DSL connection.
Any suggestions to solve the problem ?
and sorry for making it so long to read

also even thou it took time to open a page but when i download a file it, the downloading speed of only that file goes like what it should be.

  • I just set up an Optus Cisco DPQ3925 wireless router to access higher speed internet I signed up for. I have a 4th gen airport extreme I want to put in another room and use as a wifi extender the wifi but I get an error message each time I try. Help?

    Hello all.
I have just set up a new cisco DPQ3925 wireless router that Optus sent me to be able to access the higher speed internet I have signed up for.
I have a 4th gen apple extreme that I want to use to extend the wifi but when I try to update the settings via the airport utility I get a message that says it cannot do so, and to check it is in range and the wifi is set up correctly. I'm not experienced with these things but I can't think what I have done wrong.
Is anybody able to help me please.

You cannot use the AE to extend wireless from a non apple router such as your cisco modem router.. they are not compatible..
You need to tie to the two devices together either with ethernet or something like EOP adapters.. They are about $120 and you can price match in officeworks.
