Connecting to Home wiring

I'm looking at the PAP 2 VOIP adapter and i see that it cautions to only connect it to a phone and not into a phone port inthe house. Am I correct in thinking that this is because you don't want the adapter to encounter the voltage associated with a phone line (especially when its ringing)?
But, if I were to physically disconnect my home wiring from the outside wires brought in by the phone company, could I then connect the entire house to the VOIP adapter?
Many thanks, Carlos

You can connect your PAP2 device to your home wiring if you disconnect the wiring comming into the premise. I have seen several people do it and it works OK.
You cannot connect the PAP2 without disconnecting the incoming wiring due to 2 devices sending signals on the line - your PAP2 and the phone company. (Not a good thing)
One other reason to not disconnect your outside line is that even though you are not purchasing service from your local provider they are still required by law to provide 911 service. This is a large part of the reasoning for residential VoIP providers telling their customers to connect a cordless handset to the provided VoIP device.

If you have a wired connection to the iMac and you are asking about using the iMac for the Internet connection for the iPad, you will need to use Internet Sharing on the Mac.
No clue which OS version you run on the Mac, but here is a link to help with 10.6 and this will get you started. You can Google " Internet sharing with Mac OS ...." and come up with a number of support articles.

  • BT Infinity - home wiring etc

    Hi All,
I am considering BT Infinity. The literature says the modem/router needs to plug into the master socket - which has a new faceplate installed. This would be really inconvenient for me, due to positioning of master socket, availability of mains, data wiring etc. So, my questions are:
    - can the modem be installed at a second socket (ie, can the unfiltered VDSL signal be routed through standard - but good quality - home wiring off the master socket)?
    - can the other sockets in the home be run from a filter in the main socket, for voice only, or is it better to leave the master faceplate as standard, and have individual filters on all voice connections, as with ADSL.
    - does anyone know if my Netgear DG834N can work as a VDSL modem, or will I need to use the BT product (I'd still hope to use the DG834N as a primary or secondary wireless point).
At the moment, my DG834N is plugged into an extension socket that connects directly into the master socket. The ring wire has been disconnected throughout the house, and I get a stable connection speed on ADSLmax of about 7Mb/s. I live almost 2km from Wantage exchange. I'd like to put the new modem just where the 834N is at present, but I may move the wireless router elsewhere for better coverage (very old house with wire mesh in the walls - don't ask - not the best transmission conditions).
    many thanks
    Jim

When the new (slightly bigger) faceplate is fitted to the master socket the installer can run a cable from this to whereever you want the modem. This cable is white and quite thin (about the same as a RJ11 cable but round in shape) The install includes a run of 30m so it can go upstairs/another room etc. Unless you have a huge house this should be enough.
In my case my master socket is in plain view so I had the socket for the modem run along the skirting (behind the sofa), a run of about 2m but at least it's mostly out of sight, well as best as it's ever going to get as the builder put the socket about 2 foot up the wall and next to the living room door ??
The cable from the modem to the HH is cat5 so yu can put that wherever also.

  • Keeps losing connection to Home Sharing

    Hi,
My Apple TV keeps losing it's connection to my Home sharing library! I have my iTunes account always open and sitting on my iMac which is on 24/7. I can connect to my home share even if the iMac is sleeping or my wife is logged on to the network.
My problem is when I sit down to watch a film or view photo's etc it keeps telling me that I must turn on home sharing which is on! The only thing I can do is then turn it off and then back on. All is then good.
I have not managed to see why it loses connection but I know it's not when the iMac sleeps or someone else logs onto it.
Anyone else having the same problems?

Strange, as I have two of the last generation (720p) AppleTVs.  I recently upgraded the WRT160 I spoke of in the previous post to a Linksys E2500 and have had no issues whatsoever.  I even went so far as connect my Apple TVs to the new 5ghz wireless band on the new router and it works perfectly always.  Never, ever drops connections.
I still believe your router (lacks uPnP) is to blame.  I looked around briefly and it seems the Airport Express and some older Airports don't even have support for uPnP.  One thing you can try to test my theory, is to assign a static IP to one of your Apple TVs and forward port TCP/UDP 5678 to it as a test.  My guess is that your Airport is closing this connection after a period of time causing your loss of connectivity to home sharing.
Another thought is to go to your local retailer (or Amazon, etc.) and purchase any of the E series Linksys routers. These seem to work flawlessly with Apple products and home sharing implementation.  Another plus to this angle is you will get QoS which all Apple routers lack and is increasingly important these days.  I personally have all the following connected to my Linksys and never had so much as an issue:
    (2) Apple TVs (5ghz band)
    (2) iPhones
    New iPad (5ghz band)
    3 D-Link wireless cameras
    VOIP Phone
    Hackintosh
    Macbook Air
    (2) Wireless to wired Ethernet bridges
Good luck with your issue and please post back if any of my suggestions work.

  • How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

How do I use my wireless Led TV as a second monitor to my mac book pro using my home network without any cables? Both of them are connected to home network

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.

  • I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space after I have done the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help

I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space so after I have made the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help I'm unable to make the backup as I need to transfer all my data on my new iPhone 5S

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
In the meantime you can back up your phone to your computer by connect it, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Back Up.  Also be sure to transfer your purchases (File>Devices>Transfer Purchases).  Then set up your new phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iTunes Backup and follow the prompts to restore this backup to your new phone.  This will be much faster than using iCloud anyway.

  • Whenever I try to open my Wifi Connection at home, it doesn't work! It just stays on 3G, and I want to update my phone, but In order for me to do this, I have to connect through WiFi to ignore additional charges, please help!

Hey! So basically, I've been using my Wifi connection (from home) lately, I had no troubles what-so-ever. I turned on my 3G network this morning, and again, everything's going perfectly fine with my connection. I came home around half 4 from school and decided to turn on my Wifi connection at home, what I've realised is that whenever I try turning on my Wifi network, the little sign that's usually at the top doesn't appear anymore. I tried resetting the network settings and closing and opening my phone, but.. This didn't really make any difference. I'm really worried and I don't know what to do! I have tried reconnecting to my Wifi but nothing happened, my Bluetooth's never really turned on. Please help!!

I'm not sure if I'm understanding but if I am then I'm not sure why you are turning your Wi-Fi off and on. It should automatically connect and use your Wi-Fi when it is available and use your cellular data connection when Wi-Fi is not available. I haven't turned either off ever. However, more to the point of your current problem, the following has some troubleshooting steps that may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

  • HT4557 Hi, we have just purchased Apple TV and having some problems connecting to the iPad. It is asking us to 'connect to Home Sharing in iTunes' however I can't find the link/ button to press. iPad has been updated. Any help please

    Hi,
We have just purchased Apple TV and can't connect to Home Sharing. We have wifi, the iPad is updated. I can't find the link on ITunes on the iPad that the tv is telling me to click. I've also tried turning it on via settings then music which seems to be connected. I can view YouTube clicks on the tv, but not an app so I can watch the footy. What am I doing wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks

Make sure your Apple TV is on the same network as your iPad. The SSID and password of router must be set in your Apple TV.

  • Why won't my Apple TV recognize my Apple ID when connecting to Home Sharing?

I'm out of town using my Apple TV in my RV connected to WiFi at a campground and I'm trying to connect to Home Sharing because that seems to be the only available option to me when I turn on the Apple TV.
Whenever I try to connect my Apple ID info, it gets denied with the "Error" page saying that my Apple ID info is incorrect. However, I have re-entered and rechecked the info multiple times and even tried using a different family member's ID info.
What am I doing wrong here? I just want to watch Netflix via Apple TV!

Re: Solution for Apple TV 2, Xfinity router, Ethernet connection and Home Sharing
You may need to configure some ports on your router for port forwarding. Before you do, you may want to try setting the Apple TV date and time to manual but have the time zone be the same as your computer that is running iTunes.
The link is to a more aggressive approach that will solve your connectivity problem. Your equipment may not be the same but the configuration changes is what you are looking for here.

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • I have a 3rd Generation iPod that will not connect to Home Wi-Fi- keeps dismissing- saying unable to connect.

I have a 3rd Generation iPod that will NOT connect to our internet connection at home. Message on screen keeps saying it is 'unable' to connect. Yes I have already reset to default factory settings, No we do not have our service encrypted or password protected, anyone else have any other viable suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Does the iPod see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iPod connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

My Droid-X cannot connect to my wi-fi home router. using WPA2-PSK. Phone sees network but will not connect ?
At one point is connected for a few seconds only ?

We certainly want you to be connected at home amc129!
Lets take a look at this! Have you been able to connect previously to the WPA2-PSK setting? Can you connect with other WiFi networks like normal? If so, I recommend contacting the router provider, as a software update or settings change may be necessary. Please keep me posted!

    Hello,
Frustrated and working on this issue for month - Apple TV no longer connects with Home Sharing! I have uninstalled all apple firmware and reinstalled from scratch ITunes, I have checked and unchecked Home Sharing and entered password dozens of times! I have reset all four apple TVs and I have unchecked/disabled IPV6 and it still does not work. all four Apple TVs have worked for years and somewhere along the way they just stopped.
I am running Windows 7 and the only thing that has changed in the path is the Time Warmer Arris router. Apple TV still connects to WiFi and Netflicks.
    Please help,
