Connecting to Hospital Server as a Guest

Hello:
I work in a hospital that offers free Wifi. My touch picks up the connection as a guest of the network, but unfortunately, for some reason, the connection doesn't work when I try to access the internet. I have a 1st generation touch. In the office next to mine, a person has a second generation touch, and his picks up the network and is able to connect to the internet. The only difference I can tell between our ipods is that his picks up the router address and the DNS number, while mine does not. He came over to my office and his touch worked, so it isn't the location. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thanks.

Which firmware version are you on? I'm not completely familiar with the Gen 1 iPod Touches, but this seems to work on the Gen 2, 2.2 Touches:
Open the connection (the little blue arrow) to see the settings. Tap the DHCP tab and then tap Renew Lease. That should allow you to connect to the internet from that server.

  • I recently added an extender to my verizon router to be able to connect to apple tv in my guest house.  the apple tv message in the guest house says it cannot connect to the server at this time.

I have two problems.  Firstly I rented two movies and have not been able to watch them.  Error on screen says 'cannot load at this time, try later'.  Second problem is that I added a wi-fi extender to my verizon router to connect to apple tv in my guest house.  message on screen in guest house says 'cannot connect to server'.  I need some set up help.

    Hi Kailik Hunter,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has some steps you can try if you're unable to sign in to your Apple TV and continue with setup:
    Apple TV: Basic troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1551
If you are still having trouble, you can try to reset your equipment by unplugging Apple TV, your television, your wireless networking equipment or AirPort Base Station, and your router from their power outlet. Wait 30 seconds, then plug everything back in.
    Cheers,

  • My iphone has lost connection to the server; I cannot get e-mails.

My iphone has lost connection to the server; I cannot get e-mails. What can I do to fix that?

I recently put on a PowerPoint presentation at DU, in Denver Colorado; signed on as DU guest to access Internet link.  SInce then I haven't been able to get e-mail on my Iphone - Cannot Get Mail, Server Stopped Responding.  I tried all previous suggestions, such as rebooting phone, updating software etc.  I went to MacBook Pro and tried logging on to yahoo e-mail.  Apparently there was a security risk to my e-mail account so Yahoo locked up my account.  I reset my password, it was verified through text message, and Voila it worked.  Don't forget you also have to change this on your Iphone: go into settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars; click on your e-mail browser, then account and enter your new password, click done and it will verify on you phone as well.  Hope this helps!!!

  • There was a problem connecting to the server ... OS 10.8.4 + WD NAS

    Dear all,
    first my configuration:
iMac from mid 2012, MacOS X Mountain Lion, 10.8.4, iPhoto 09 v. 8.1.2 - all software updates done and up-to-date
MacBook Pro late 2011, MacOS X Mountain Lion, 10.8.4
NAS WD My Book World Edition II (white light), 2 x 1TB (configured RAID : 1TB mirrored), original firmware (01.02.14 with MioNet built on Thu Feb 9 14:11:48 CST 2012 ) NFS, AFP enabled
a win 7 laptop and plenty of other devices
everything on a LAN with GB router + WiFi
I have my iPhoto library on my iMac, but the photos (the originals) stored on the NAS. I have the option "copy photos to library when importing" disabled. So I guess iPhoto has a reference / link in the library to the original files.
Everything used to work fine until some weeks ago. Not sure what happened but suddenly I got the error message "There was a problem connecting to the server ... Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. ..." when I tried to import photos stored on my WD NAS.  When I want to display any photo stored on the NAS - same thing.
Now I guess I have a bunch of gray hairs more while trying to get this fixed.
I tried so many of the tips posted everywhere including booting in save mode, deleting the .plist files (first I actually tried to clean them using Xcode first before deleting them), etc. I cleared out KeyChain. I removed all recent entries (folders) and recent servers from the "history". I tried to connect as guest or named user. There are also no "logIn items" pointing to the NAS. I even tried to disable / enable AFP + NFS on the NAS, not to mention countless restarts of all the machines
One other thing I noticed: Before that problem occured I was able to select the NAS in Finder and it would show me all the shares. When I selected one of them it was mounted automatically. When I select it now I get "connecting" for a loooong time and then "Connection Failed". Most of the time (not always!) however I am able to get in via "Go -> Connect To Server - smb://<nas server name>). And suddently after that also selecting the NAS in Finder shows me all the shares! Hoever even this not in 100% of all cases. I can replicate this from the iMac and the MacBook.
I do use an external HD for TimeMachine to back up my data (directly connected via USB). No issues there.
Not I really don't know what to do any more
Do you have any ideas? Did anyone ever get a response from Apple with a useful solution that really hit the core of the issue?
    Thank you!

SOLVED!! and I want to share the solution which worked for me with everybody here. Ultimately I had to install nettalk 2.2 on my NAS as described here: http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight . A nice description on how to do that can be found here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423 .
One last remark: When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the original version, so I can confirm this one works too.

    Hi everyone,
I'm running into an annoying issue with samba. I don't have any printers installed, and probably won't. However smbd complains to no end in /var/log/errors.log about not being able to connect to a cups server:

Those last two lines get spammed constantly.
I've done a little bit of research into the matter, and followed the steps here to try to resolve the problem: http://www.davekb.com/browse_computer_t … server:txt
Unfortunately it doesn't appear to make any difference.
    Here is my /etc/samba/smb.conf:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

    However, samba was complaining that

was invalid. I removed that line and it works great.

  • Safari 6.1 freezes and then can't connect to the server when I refresh the page

    Hi everyone.
I have a Mid 2010 13" Macbook. It is running the following..
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
    Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Hard Drive: 320GB
Recently Safari has been acting up. Everything will be working fine but then it will freeze and when I switch to another tab that tab will be white, as will all other tabs when I switch to them. When I refresh the page it force refreshes all other pages but on a lot of the pages (Facebook, Twitter, google, Gmail, mostly things with a password I think) it says that it can't make a secure connection to the server. I tried switching to Chrome and the same thing happened and then I switched to the Guest User and the same thing happened.
It has also been telling me that I have no more space on the startup disk but I'm not sure how that can be the case. I currently have 272GB free of a 319GB hard drive so I'm not sure what the problem is here! When I restart the mac everything is fine again but I have noticed it is taking longer for the mac to start up now. I have repaired disk permissions, I have reset Safari and cleared the history. I have downloaded OmniDiskSweeper and it has told me that the highest usage is in Spotify caches and my Gmail folder. So I deleted the Spotify caches and deleted all my emails. I then tried to delete the mail folder in Finder but when I do it just builds itself back up again.
When I used Disk Utility to verify the disk it found no issues.
I tried to shut down and restart it to run the hardware test but it doesn't boot up, it just takes a lot longer to reach the log in screen.
I don't know what else to try! Any help would be welcomed.

    Try this DNS server ..
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

I have no windows machines so it's only my laptop and desktop both running linux that I need to connect to this. I have tried googling and searching these forums to no avail
Thanks for any help that can be offered
    Mike

If I run the following (on the machine I'm trying to set up the share)
    smbclient -L localhost -U%
    I got the following output
Connection to localhost failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
so I thought it might be something incorrect with the iptables side of things, however I haven't really touched that at all and it seems to look correct
    iptables -nvL
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 667 packets, 79977 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 157 packets, 20724 bytes)
pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination
So from my (very little) knowledge this appears correct (I think)... However it appears that something is blocking access somewhere.

  • Server 2012 VM Guest (AppassureCore) keeps getting BugChecks...not sure whereto start?

Bear with me here as there is a lot of technical data I need to present I believe so that I can help you all help me :)
I have a Server 2012 VM Guest running on Hyper-V on a Server 2012 host.
The VM is running my main Appassure core - I have a replicated core also but am having no issues with it at all.
The Host machine has 2 XEON E5540s, for a total of 8 cores. It has 48 GB of memory.
There is also another VM guest running on this host and that is a Server 2008 R2 that is my FSMO master and has no issues whatsoever.
Both guests are running Virtual Memory with starting memory of 512 and max of 49152.
Both VMs and the host each have their own GBe dedicated NIC.
The problem 2012 VM is setup with 4 virtual processors. The Server 2008 R2 (non-problem) VM is running on 8 Virtual processors.
Since the 2012 machine is running Appassure, I have an iSCSI connection to a NAS device. This is the same setup as the replicated Appassure core in every way except that the replicated core is a physical machine.
All integration services are installed and available.
For the most part, just before each bugcheck, I get a rapid succession of around 350 errors that happen within 2 minutes, then the crash...
I won't list them all, but here are the main ones:
EVENT 12293, VSS (I get 4 of these in a row.)
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine details IVssSnapshotProvider::QueryVolumesSupportedForSnapshots(ProviderId,8388617,...) [hr = 0x8000ffff, Catastrophic failure
    Operation:
Query volumes supported by this provider
    Context:
       Provider ID: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
       Snapshot Context: 8388617
    Event 20, iScsiPrt
Connection to the target was lost. The initiator will attempt to retry the connection.
Event 7, iScsiPrt (2 of these)
The initiator could not send an iSCSI PDU. Error status is given in the dump data
    Then another 12293, VSS error
    EVENT 481, ESE
    AppRecovery.ExchangeCheckHost (3840) DSM_JET_INSTANCE: An attempt to read from the file "C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\MountPoints\064ab6b0-e8e9-4862-9756-e47f19ca248f\E__\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb" at
offset 7934615552 (0x00000001d8f0a000) for 8192 (0x00002000) bytes failed after 30 seconds with system error 121 (0x00000079): "The semaphore timeout period has expired. ".  The read operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02).  If
this error persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be restored from a previous backup.
    Event 419, ESE
    AppRecovery.ExchangeCheckHost (3840) DSM_JET_INSTANCE: Unable to read page 968580 of database C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\MountPoints\064ab6b0-e8e9-4862-9756-e47f19ca248f\E__\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb. Error -1022.
    EVENT 454, ESE
    AppRecovery.ExchangeCheckHost (3840) DSM_JET_INSTANCE: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -1022.
I then get about 6 more of the VSS errors 12293
Then comes the motherload - a flood of Ntfs errors. Here are some examples:
    EVENT 55, Ntfs
A corruption was discovered in the file system structure on volume C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\MountPoints\064ab6b0-e8e9-4862-9756-e47f19ca248f\E__.
The Master File Table (MFT) contains a corrupted file record.  The file reference number is 0x800000000050e.  The name of the file is "<unable to determine file name>".
    EVENT 131, Ntfs
The file system structure on volume C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\MountPoints\064ab6b0-e8e9-4862-9756-e47f19ca248f\E__ cannot be corrected.
Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\MountPoints\064ab6b0-e8e9-4862-9756-e47f19ca248f\E__.
I then get about 300 more of the EVENT 55, Ntfs errors that are all exactly the same except that they reference a different 'File Reference Number'
    Then the bugcheck happens.
Now, I ran WinDBG and it pretty much gave me an answer that didn't really help all that much:
    REFERENCE_BY_POINTER (18)
    Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000000, Object type of the object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg2: fffffa8305c6e040, Object whose reference count is being lowered
    Arg3: 0000000000000010, Reserved
    Arg4: fffffa8301d642a1, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object’s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

If you have made it this far, I thank you. I really have no idea where to go with this and am worried because obviously it involves my main backup so any help would be greatly appreciated.
It should be said that I am also creating a backup of this actual machine from within the machine itself, using AppAssure. Not sure why that matters much except that I am guessing the VSS errors are referring to the actual machine itself - not a protected external
    machine.
    Thanks again!

    Hello Hilary,
I have been working on a small replication test.
On the Publisher, things went smooth and the Snapshot Agent was able to work and produce a snapshot written in a shared folder located on the Publisher
On the Subscriber, as I am testing from SQL Server Express, I had run the following command:
replmerg.exe -Publisher [SERVER\SQLInstance] -PublisherDB [dbRepl] -PublisherSecurityMode 0 -PublisherLogin rplMergeAgent -PublisherPassword p@ssw0rd -Publication [TEST Publication] -Distributor [SERVER\SQLInstance] -DistributorSecurityMode 0 -DistributorLogin

I couldn't grant rplMergeAgent Read Permission on SnapshotFolder as it is only a SQL Login.
When I ran the above command line, I received the following error:

  • There was a problem connecting to the server "Neptune"; The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator...

I've seen this problem throughout the website, but nothing hits all my bases.
I'm running OS 10.8.4- just upgraded last month.
I work for a company that predominantly uses PC's. I'm in the Graphics Department.
Neptune is a Windows server but houses all our art files. Since the upgrade I have not been able to access the server either by name (which used to work) or by IP address.
I tried doing the suggested "terminal" fix but that did not work.
I must say, mail works. Internet works. Wi-fi works.
    Any other suggestion?

    Hi AppleRocks
Glad you've found a workaround however this is a common problem for people trying to connect via AFP as a registered user to a legacy server.
Whilst connecting via SMB and as a 'guest' should provide a temporary solution some people need to connect via AFP as a registered user to access all of their servers files successfully.
There are several sudo commands and discussions on this subject (Believe me I've read most of them ) but I have found this thread to be the simplest and most effective:
Connecting to legacy AFP services - Apple Support
Hope this helps future readers of this thread!

  • Can't connect to AFP server via Finder sidebar

Suddenly I can't connect to my server from the sidebar.
Guest access works. But my default user login returns "Connect failed".
I can connect via 'Connect to...' and type in the IP adres.
I can connect via iPad with a file sharing app (like ezShare)
    The console returns:
Jul 29 04:54:39 myComputer NetAuthSysAgent[774]: AFP error -5014 mapped to EIO
    Jul 29 04:54:39 myComputer Finder[282]: SharePointBrowser::handleEnumerateCallBack returned 5
I've tried temporary deleting the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder... no help.
    Any ideas?

    Try this:
    Uncheck Remote Management
    Check Screen sharing
    Add user(s)
When finished check the remote management again.
It has something to do with updating / resetting the cache files...
    It worked for me.
    HIH

(PS, i found it by coincidence. I had the same trouble and was "playing" with these settings
    which resolved the other problem..

  • Why does Safari keep saying "it can't connect to the server" every time I try to access any sites?

I have the latest safari update for os x, which was working perfectly fine up until 3 days ago. Everytime I would try to access any site, safari would tell me it couldn't connect to the server, and I would have to refresh the page at least 5-10 times until I can access the site. I checked my internet, and it seems to be running perfectly. I also tried using Chrome and it had no problems accessing sites, too, so I know it's not my internet. :/
Is anyone else having the same problems?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Hotspot login cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server.

I am trying to connect to a public wifi network.  My iPad connects marvoulesly.  My iPhone not so much.  I have an iPhone 4 and everytime I go to connect, it goes to a pop up page where I'm supposed to click a link to adhere to their TOS.  When I get the pop up page I get "Hotspot login cannot open the page because it could not establish a secure connection to the server"
I've reset the network settings and nothing changed.  Same error message.  Any tips or tricks to fix this?  I'm laid up on bed rest in the hospital and would really rather that I not use all my data minutes...
    Thanks!

Updated to iOS6 on an iPhone 4 this morning, and now when I attempt to connect to my work wireless, it connects for a moment then attempts to popup some login page (I sometimes get the hotspot login error you've mentioned) and because the page doesn't exist I can't get connected to the wireless netowrk.
What the heck have apple broken in this update?
Why when joining a normal wireless network is my phone even going near a Login page? What is this and how do I disable it?
Oh, and I'm posting here because your suggestions of disabling the Wi-Fi and Cellular data netowkrs doesn't solve the problem.
[Edit: seems while typing this leaving the cellular data disabled, it's now letting my join wireless - seems to be some timeout on it fixing the issue - I'd still like to know what this login page is it's attempting to locate is for.]
