Connecting to iMac G4 (with USB1.1)

Hi. I'm experiencing some problems connecting my iPod Touch to my iMac G4: time-outs, "cannot connect to iPhone", etc. This has probably something to do with the fact that my iMac doesn't have USB2.0 (http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMac17-inch1Ghz.html). Weird thing is that I am able to connect to my iPod (and synchronize it, although terribly slow) when I reboot my iMac. My work-around isn't ideal, but I'm happy with what I got. But for how long? Officially there's no support for USB1.1. Does anyone have some suggestions on what to do? Is there a way to get USB2.0 on my G4 for instance? Thanks!

Hello,
I am getting lots of SBBOD and the iPhone message when I connect my iPod touch via a powered USB2.0 hub on my Aluminium iMac (I haven't tried it on my iMac G4 yet).
I would ask Apple about this but I know their answer will be plug it into the USB port on the iMac.
We often get asked about USB2.0 over in the iMac G4 forums and the answer is always the same and negative There is no way to add USB2.0 to the 17" 1GHz iMac G4.
I'd suggest that you try connecting it direct to the iMac's USB ports.
Incidentally two iPod Nanos and an iPod Shuffle sync and charge fine through the same USB2.0 hub on my system (both Alu iMac and iMac G4). The iPod touch does work when connected to the USB2.0 port on the Aluminium Apple keyboard with nil errors.

Hey guys! I want to connect my Imac 21 " with my Tv just for fun. Does anyone know , how it works?

Selecting the correct adapter and cable depends on which year model iMac you have and what inputs the TV has?
Check the User's Guide that came with your iMac or your Spec's at > Apple - Support - Technical Specifications
to see if your iMac has a Mini-DVI or Mini DisplayPort and then select that adapter with the correct connection for the TV.
Example: if you have a 2010 or 2011 iMac and an HDMI ready TV, then you would want the > Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - Apple Store (U.S.)

  • HT5304 what is the best way to connect my imac wireless with airport express or directly plugged into airport unit

what is the best way to connect my imac to internet via airport express. wireless or ethernet plug to airport? thanks

    Hello quinstar,
It sounds like you would like to use either your Personal HotSpot to AirPrint from your MacBook Pro or use an Airport to do so without internet access to the home. According to the following Featured Discussion you very well may be able to use AirPrint with Personal HotSpot:
HT4356 Can I use personal hotspot as wifi to connect printer?
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4007254
Also, the Airport products to not need an active internet connection to set up a home Wi-Fi connection so that is another option as well.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Slow Internet Connection on iMac G5 with Airport or Ehernet

I'm running 10.5.8 on a Power PC G5 iMac (ISight) with 2.5GB SDRAM and 40GB spare space on the hard disk. There's 2 ways I can connect to the internet:
Using Airport, where I get a max download speed of 3Mbps.
Using a Devolo powerline bridge where download speeds are also 3Mbps. The spec transfer rate of the Devolo device is 14 Mbps. All download speeds are measured using www.speedtest.net, and I have a 802.11g wireless router.
My ISP subscription is for 16 Mbps, which I can almost achieve on my iPad elsewhere in the house.
As a straight comparison test, I ran the speedtest on the iMac with a Windows XP machine right beside it. While the Windows machine returned a max download of 7Mbps, the same test at the same time on the iMac only recorded 2.5Mbps.
I have done all the ususl things: reset permissions, rebooted PRAM, reset the router, deleted all wireless connections from the iMac etc.
It therefore appears that, whichever means of connection is used, the iMac can only reach 3 Mbps. Is this something which could be a function of the age of the iMac (6 years) and its spec, or is there something I can do to improve the speed and return it to the higher levels I used to enjoy?

    Hi Paul,
That really is a first...if you go over to the iPad discussions there are a lot of complaints about the iPads are so slow compared with the uers' Macs/PCs, etc. You must be the first person to say their iPad is faster than their iMac
It is very possible the issue is the age of the iMac, though it seems the speed is a little low for a machine connected by ethernet. I could understand the slower transfer rate on wireless since the older AirPort cards were much slower than today.
I don't have my 802.11 standard here right now, over at my daughter's house, but the transfer rates you quote for the service provider sound like the g-protocol limits in free-air. So the half-speed rate is not an unreasonable reduction.
When you say you used to enjoy higher transfer rates, was that with 10.5 or 10.4? Just curious, because improvements in OSs often carry along higher system overhead, also.

  • What's the best way to connect two imac's with shared internet connection?

    Hi
I plan on purchasing a new iMac (likely 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo - 20 inch, probably will have leopard) and would like to set it up so I can share files and internet connection with my older iMac (1.25 GHz Power PC G4, 768 MB DDR SDRAM, using Tiger Version 10.4.11). I plan on using the Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a exterior cable modem for high speed internet through Shaw (internet provider) and my ethernet connection is through that.
I've heard a few things about this set up, but there are mixed reviews on everything. Would it be better to connect the Airport Base Station to my older iMac and then connect to the internet wirelessly through my new iMac or vice versa? I've heard some of the older iMac's have slow Airport Cards so thinking maybe should use my new iMac for wireless. One computer will be upstairs and the other downstairs.
There must be a few people out there who've done this, so any assistance would be great. Thanks for your help.

Would it be better to connect the Airport Base Station to my older iMac and then connect to the internet wirelessly through my new iMac...
    Yes
This would allow the old iMac to use a 100 Mbps Ethernet connection while the new iMac can use a 802.11n wireless connection.
The old iMac only has 802.11g (54 Mbps) wireless capability.

  • How do I connect to Airport express with my iMac?

I am trying to connect my iMac to my Airport Express.

Sorry, the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule would be in the same boat as far as their USB ports. However, if a multifunction printer is network-ready, meaning that it can connect to an existing network by Ethernet or by wireless, then it could connect to the AirPorts by one of those means and have all of its functionality.
For example, I have an HP Officejet 6500. This multifunction printer has both Ethernet and wireless capability. I have it connected by wireless to one of my AirPort Extreme Base Stations and I am able to both scan and fax with it from my Macs or PCs in this configuration.

how do i connect my iMac to my tv to see movies with wire

    Hey rodskc10,
Thanks for the question! Based on the iMac model and TV you have, you’ll need to pick up a compatible cable. There are a few options that can be found on the Apple Online Store:
Mac Cables - Computer Audio & Video Adapters, Network Cables & More - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables#!
For example, if you have the latest iMac and an HDTV, a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable should do the job (you’ll connect this to the Thunderbolt port, which is backwards compatible with mini DisplayPort).
For additional information, see this article:

  • How to connect living room Tv with upstairs iMac...RGB cable or what??

the problem is that the TV isn't connected to the upstairs iMac yet. What is the best way of doing that? Via a RGB cable connection or Airport express with airtunes? pardon the ignorance.
Also once the connection was established, would i be able to browse the contents of my hard drive using a wireless keyboard and mouse?
    Thanks.
    Sharad

An Airport Express with airtunes won't work for you ,as it carries audio only. I would use a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter if the TV supports it,otherwise I would use a Mini-DVI to S-video adapter. As far as the wireless keyboard and mouse goes, I would think they wouldn't have enough power to transmit through the floor.

For the "Arangements" option to appear, the external display must be turned on with the correct input selected and connected to the computer.  Then close system prefs, reopen, go to "Display" and "Arrangement" will be along the top.

  • My imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an 2wire DSL modem.

Help my brand new imac and ipad2 will not connect to the internet with Windstream using an "2WIRE" DSL modem.  Windstream tech service is useless.  i can connect with the built in router through Ethernet or wireless, but still no connecting to internet, help!  windstream said everything is working on their end, yea right.  What i do know is that both the mac and ipad work at other places and can connect with wireless connected to the internet, so i know it's not the apple products.
these are brand new machines with lion.
This is my first mac, so I’m still new to how it works, which is not helping either so a detailed help would be great.  Please help before my wife losses it
    thanks

There is a 2701HG-B, and a 2701HG-D.  If not labelled on the modem, ask Windstream which one they presently supply or how to tell the difference.
By the way tell your wife it isn't that bad.  At least you have an ethernet DSL modem.  There were times where DSL modems had RJ-11, USB, and Ethernet, and all three were used to provide access.  At least now only the craziest DSL providers still use those modems.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

    Thanks,
