Connecting to Internet without a Router...

I will soon be moving to a place that has no internet connection. I have no desktop...only a wi-fi ready laptop.
How do I access the internet securely from my home location without a router?  Are there routers that need not be hooked up to a desktop?  Any other solutions?  I have an expresscard slot...is there hardware for the expresscard slot that will allow me to access securely, without a router?
Thanks.

I have not ever seen a laptop that had wi-fi but not wired Ethernet.
You need to sign up for some sort of internet service.  Most ISPs (DSL or cable) provide a modem that has an Ethernet port.  You would connect the Ethernet port of your laptop to this to operate without a router.
There is also dialup if cable/DSL aren't available.  IT's painful but sometimes the only option.  You may need to get a USB external modem with newer laptops, since many manufacturers are no longer including built-in modems.

  • For a LAN network in my office, all laptops are Windows based and the internet is through LAN and other computer get connected with adhoc without the router. My Apple computer nor my iPhone 5 get connected. How do I connect to this Internet?

In the office, All my colleges use Windows laptops. The Internet connection is out of LAN wire installed in one of the computers. Others use Internet by creating adhoc connection. However none of the apple products are being able to connect to this connection. How can i connect my MacBook Pro or iPhone 5 to this Internet network?

Just how is the one computer connecting to the internet? What type of connection does the office have, DSL, Cable or is it a Data connection through a Cell phone provider.
I doubt all other computer are doing Ad-Hoc but are probably Sharing the Internet connection with Internet Connection Sharing from that one Windows base PC.
All you khave to do is Connect to that same WiFi SSID name and have the correct password for it.

  • Just got a used IPhone from store and it won't connect to Internet without having to use wifi. Already called my phone company and it still doesn't work. How do I fix this?

I just went to GameStop to get a used Iphone3 and I can't seem to figure out how to get Internet without using wifi connection. Anyone know how to do so? Everything else works good.

Before you go there call your provider first and have them check the provisioning on the phone. They will ask if you did this when you go to the Genius Bar.

Can't connect to the internet through a netgear95 router.  my PC connects to internet ok, none of my apple stuff (iphone/ ipad) will connect though.  Must be something in settings on router.

    Hi Scott,
Do you have any Wireless devices that connect to the router? I'm assuming that your PC may connect via Ethernet cable?

  • Iphone will not connect to Internet without WIFI connection

My iphone will not connect to the internet without a wifi connection.
I have restored the settings many times. But i still have this problem.
I get a message on safari which says 'could not activate celluar data network'
    what do i do?

If you have restored your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup and as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup with no change, have you contacted O2? Your line may need to be reset by O2, which will involve turning your iPhone off whole O2 does the reset at the server, or possibly there is a problem with your SIM card.

  • Problem connecting to internet with linksys router after internet network password reset

I do not know the model number of the wireless linksys router offhand, but it is one known to have a bug regarding connecting the internet. Others have solved the problem by buying another model number, but the person who owns it does not want to buy a new one since he does not know how to use any other one.
What happened is our phone company (also the internet provider) was having technical problems so there no internet connection. Then, my computer opened with internet page to reset password to connect.
Although I am able to get a connection on my wireless laptop, this other person in house is unable to connect to wired computer through linksys.

Hi. WUSB300N is actually a wireless usb n adapter. A wireless receiver not a wireless access point or a router. You may want to check if you have a wireless Linksys or Cisco router there.

  • N97 mini connect to internet without reason

I have no apps running and no widget than use internet, but it is active the HSDPA connection
    why is it?
I have not installed WhatsApp nor Antivirus or other hidden process

    Hi leo3478,
    Thanks for your feedback.
Once you set up an access point on your N97mini it will connect to the internet as defined in the accesspoint. You can change these settings but you need to switch to the offline profile or have an active Wi-Fi connection to be allowed to edit the settings.
You can switch to the offline profile by taping the off/on button for the profile menu to appear and selecting, then activating the offline profile.
To edit, go to MENU>Settings>Connectivity>Destinations>Internet and select the mobile data access point. The last option allows changing settings how the connection is set up between 'Always/Automatically' or 'After confirmation/when needed'.
You could also setup the option to choose your default connection to always ask in MENU>Settings>Connectivity>Destinations > Options>Default connection
    Hope this helps.

  • Connect to Internet Without Airport Base Station or Other Wireless Router

I have an iMac G5 w/Airport Extreme card, an eMac w/Airport card (not Extreme), and an iBook w/Airport card (not extreme). The iMac is connected to the internet via DSL (direct Ethernet connection - no router). I can succesfully network all three computers for file sharing but can not connect to the internet over the network using the eMac or the iBook. Is it even possible to use the iMac as a wireless base station for the other two computers or do I have to buy a wireless router or Airport Base Station?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   eMac 10.3.9, iBook 10.3.9

no1bass, Welcome to the discussion area!
The best solution is to get an inexpensive wireless base station.
However, you can use the iMac to share the Internet connection. Go to the iMac's Sharing preference pane and enable Internet Sharing. If you have the iMac's firewall enabled, you will need to also enable Web Sharing or otherwise configure the firewall to open the correct ports.

  • Can no longer connect to internet with wireless router.

For almost a year I've had a wrt54g ver 6 connected on my computer with my cable modem and my sons computer with the compatible pci card. Everything worked fine until a few days ago, I came home and could not get on the internet with my computer. My son could, but not me. I didn't change anything at all. So I reinstalled the router drivers and I still can't connect to the internet, but now neither can the other computer. What could be the problem?
    michele

it sounds like you might have to clone the mac address of the computer that was originally connected to the cable modem. clone mac address can be found on setup tab after log into router.

  • Can connect to Internet, but not router.

I know, this is the opposite problem from what most people have. I am trying to connect through a WRT54G v.6 to the ethernet port in the wall (I don't know what the building is hooked up to, we just have ethernet ports next to our cable jacks).
If I run an ethernet cable from the wall to the 10/100 port of laptop, I connect to the Internet just fine.
If I run the ethernet cable to the WRT54G, and then connect to it using my wireless card and the default, unsecured "linksys" SSID, I connect to the Internet just fine, but I can't access the Linksys router at 192.168.1.1 (though I can successfully ping it), and if I try, though I do get the password window and put admin as the password, the Internet stops working completely.
If I run an ethernet cable from the wall to the WRT54G and from the WRT54G to my computer, as you're supposed to and as I did when trying to set it up this morning, neither the included software nor Netset will give me access to the router. Trying 192.168.1.1 in the browser brings up the password window, but no amount of resetting the router to its factory defaults will give access.
So there's my long story. I am, in fact, writing this via an unsecured, wireless connection to the default SSID. But if I dare try to access 192.168.1.1, I'll have to unplug the router and start again. What the heck is going on?

download the tftp utility from ftp.linksys.com/pub/network and upgrade the firmware

  • My network is fine, iPad can't connect to internet via any router, even when other computers work fine.

About a week ago, my daughter's iPad2 stopped connecting to the internet. It will connect to some of the routers in the house, but not all, but then just hangs in Safari, netflix, app store...basically anything that requires going online. Even if the signal is super strong and other computers connect to the internet just fine, the iPad just won't.
I've tried everything short of a full reset.  We're in IOS 5.1.1. 6 gigs free. She's frustrated because it's summer vacation and she would really like to watch netflix.

    Hi Jenroses,
I would suggest backing up your iPad and updating it to the latest iOS, which is iOS 6.1.4
The links below should help you with this:
Choosing an iOS backup method (Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iOS device?)
iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
Be sure that you are in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and then on again. If unable to do so, see this article.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and Cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and indicate that they are connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or ISP for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you are connected. Then tap the blue dot and choose Forget this Network. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network again.
Note: You will need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your desired network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and then on again2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2.For AirPort Base Stations, see this article for information about firmware updates.
If your issue is still unresolved
Follow the steps below for the issue you are experiencing.
Unable to locate a Wi-Fi network
Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network
Wi-Fi disconnects, or signal strength is less than expected
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
Unable to automatically connect to Wi-Fi
I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • Unable to connect to internet through befw11s4 router v4

I have the latest firmware 1.52.03. I can connect directly to the modem but routerwon't connect. I was looking for a older firmware to downgrade because i just upgraded it 2 weeks ago. I don't know whatelse to do.

Yes and on your previous post, you said that even when the computer is directly connected to the modem, the internet is still slow.
Anyway, please follow the instructions from the link below. Let's just give it a try.

  • Can i use wrt54g v8 to connect to internet via different router

hi i have just moved to a new house and have fios install but  they put the router in the garage i have a extra wrt54g v8 router that i want to connect my directv reciever and xbox 360 wired to the wrt54g router and wirelessly connect to my other router wich is connected to the internet  is this possible with this router

No, at least not with Linksys firmware.   The WRT54G is designed to generate a wireless network, not to connect to an existing wireless network.
The job you described is done by a device called an "ethernet bridge"  or  "wireless bridge", such as the Linksys WET200  or the WET54G.
In some cases, third party firmware might be able to convert your WRT54G to a wireless bridge.  If you are interested in this, check out "dd-wrt" and other third party firmware.

  • Slow initial connection to internet via wireless router

    Hi,
I have a D-Link Xtreme N 450 wireless router that I used with a MacBook Pro running 10.9.3.  When I first open the computer, the internet quickly connects (I can surf, get email, etc), but after a few seconds it disconnects, searches for a wireless router, and then gives me the exclamation point in the wireless icon.  It stays down for a 1-3 minutes, then mysteriously reconnects.  I've looked everywhere for a solution and cannot seem to find one.  I ran wireless diagnostics and got one error message that may be the problem - it says a nearby wireless router has the wrong country code and could be causing problems.  But has anyone else had this issue or think they know of a potential solution?
    Thanks!

am in the DFW area using Verizon Fios - I have a D-Link DIR-655 router and a 24" Imac running Mac OS X 10.5.1. I purchased the Apple Airport router thinking the problem with internet speed might be my router. This was not the case - every computer in the house was much slower using the Airport - so I returned it to my Apple store.
I have now switched off the bluetooth and airport on my Mac - it is hooked straight into the router and every day at about 6:00 it slows down to turtle speed while my other 2 laptops that are wireless in the house and much older - are lightening fast.
I have called Verizon and had them out - they say there are not enough people on Fios to create any traffic problems at certain times of the day - which I believe being that the Apple Imac is the only computer with the problem.
I have downloaded Firefox and have the exact same problem.
There has got to be some solution for this - my speed checks out very fast during this time - T2 speed for download and upload - I'm ready to throw this apple out the window.
