Connecting to Library Takes Forever

I LOVE my AppleTV! There are only a couple things that really bother me about it. The first is that it takes about 15 minutes to connect to my library. This is totally not acceptable, especially when there hasn't been any changes to the library at all. Granted, I do have a large library, but come on, 15 minutes every time! Once its all connected, everything works flawlessly (for the most part) and is pretty speedy.
Does this happen to anyone else?
Cheers
Joe
PS. My other major gripe is that you can't have playlists for movies . . . . come on Apple (you better not say I have to buy gen 2 to get this feature)

Here is how to find out how large your iTunes database is:
1. Navigate to Home->Music->iTunes
2. Right Click on "iTunes Library" and click "Get Info" (This is your iTunes database)
3. Look at the size attribute of this and it will tell you how large your database is.
Here are some details about my library:
Total Number of Songs: 32,421
Total Number of Movies: 685
Total Number of TV Shows: 100
Total Number of Podcasts: 540
iTunes Library size (all content): over 2TB (on a NAS)
iTunes Database size: 84.6MB
iTunes Library XML size: 54.9MB
I am still having the issue of the AppleTV taking forever to connect to my library.

i suggest to make a clean install of newer version of Firefox like v8.0.

• Library takes forever to load

This question has been asked earlier but no real answers has emerged and the same issue is still plaguing Apple TV...
My Apple TV (latest generation) runs on its "own" dedicated WiFi - connected with ethernet cable to Airport Express (generating the WiFi signal) on the 5GHz signal.
No internet connection is available on this WiFi as it is only used with home sharing on early 2010 MacBook Pro.  Sometimes it takes seconds for the Music and Movie options to appear and other times it takes up to 10 minutes…  Just showing "Loading XXX Library" with spinning icon.
Resetting the Apple TV is not an option as it needs to be connected to the internet to activate Home Sharing, and connecting it to that network, run the setup and get it running on its own network again takes more than 10 mintues - UNACCEPTABLE to do this every time!!
While this library loading is showing, had a look at the network traffic widget (4 finger swipe to the right) - absolutely ZERO traffic running/transmitting from the MBP to the WiFi signal!!!  I though Apple products should just WORK together…  You should be required to restart or even reset the Apple TV every time you want to use it - COME ON AND FIX IT!
As stated, this is a very long standing problem and is really getting on my nerves!  Is Apple EVER going to fix this issue once and for all??
And before anyone asks: the latest updates have been installed!

Hi Brian
No screaming done here - just a lot of upset users (I'm definitely NOT the only one with this type of problem!!) and many have internet connection in their setups, so no need to be sarcastic!
Firstly, read the following: http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/appletv/do-you-need-internet-for-the- apple-tv-to-work/QAAJU2DT7THT4YFX4
So I rest my case on the internet connection...
Here is the total setup in detail:
- ADSL internet connection with Netgear Modem
- Apple Time Capsule connected to modem (Ethernet) to generate WiFi
- 2 Airport Express units (older models) that plug directly into the wall socket - extending internet WiFi to bedroom and
      rest of the living area.
Here lies the first problem - the signal is not strong enough to reach all the way to the TV room... and it is also not the fastest: max 1Mbps...
New Airport Express generates dedicated WiFi in TV room for Apple TV only (Apple TV connected to APE via Ethernet).
Use this WiFi from MBR to stream already downloaded content to Apple TV (5GHz signal has quicker loading time - confirmed with WiFi widget)
To set up Apple TV for the first time and enable Home Sharing, the new Airport Express is setup to extend the Internet WiFi from the older model Airport Express - but as stated, the network connection is extremely slow and takes a long time.  Leaving the setup as is result in the upload time from the Library also to be extremely long AND the streaming speed runs at the speed of the internet connection - 1Mbps...
When the setup is done, the new Airport Express is then reconfigured to create dedicated Wifi for the Apple TV only without internet connectivity.
The Library loading time issue is not constant (read my first post) and almost all the other "complainers" also state this on their posts...  It is intermittent.
The setup of my system is not "screwed up" as you state it! How else do you take your Apple TV with you and do keynote presentations... No need to answer that!
You can have many different WiFi signals in one home for different applications: 1 room for Airplay only, another for Apple TV only and a dedicated Internet Wifi - they all do not need to be connected to the internet on the same WiFi signal.
So to make it more simpler to understand, forget that I have Internet - refer to http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/appletv/do-you-need-internet-for-the- apple-tv-to-work/QAAJU2DT7THT4YFX4
I only have the Apple TV connected to an Airport Express (Ethernet) and using this to stream music and movies from my MBP.  The Library loading time is still erratic...
Edit: spelling mistakes

• Copying Aperture Library takes forever

I 'm creating an off site backup for the first time as it's something I've been meaning to do for ages. Its not a fancy affair, just dragging and dropping the folders I want. I have numerous on site backups that are all in sync etc so this method should be fine.
Any way, when it came to copying my aperture library, which has almost 26000 reference images and is almost 32GB, things didn't go well. It was telling me that it was going to take 26 hours, and the time was rising, for it to copy. I have seen something similar with iPhoto but not nearly on the same scale.
What's causing this and how can I fix it? I could put a vault on the drive via aperture which doesn't take to long, but I'd really prefer to have the original library on the backup. I am currently trying to compress the folder, and although the size won't really change, it may(?) speed up as its copying an archive rather than the library.
Any ideas?
Regards

how old is the library? I experienced the same thing when copying my AP3 library to an external..it's a 48GB library with 70,000+ referenced files...estimated time did not move up to 6 hours like yours, but it did go up to 2, which is too long to copy 48GB via firewire 800...
I let it run, and total copy time ran about 30-40 minutes. There were patches where things got really slow, then other patches where they sped up again.
I would take a look at this thread
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2343039&tstart=0
specifically reply #10..as my question about long copy times and disk fragmentation was addressed there.

• Finder - establishing connection to server takes forever

Hello,
I already found an archived discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/10356039#10356039) which explains my server issue.
Anyway I will write some further thoughts down here and I don't use VPN.
Our company with about 40 (Lions, Mountain Lions and Snow Leopards) employees runs a Xserve with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
The problem I have consists of the File Sharing Service over AFP and/or SMB (I tried them both).
Most of our clients have no issues connecting with Finder to the file server and mount shares.
But a few of them have issues regarding the connecting time (~1–2 min.) until a share is mounted successfully.
After the connection is established there are no further performance issues.
Anyway this waiting time is annoying.
I don't really know whether this is a server or a client issue.
The issued clients are OS X 10.7 Lion and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion respectively.
What I already tried was creating a new user on one issued machine, but didn't help.
I'm looking forward to get some support with this.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Delivery Boy

1. Make sure SQL Server Service is running
2. If a named instance, make sure SQL Server browser service is running
3. Make sure SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections
4. Examine the SQL Server error log for messages confirming that SQL is listening on the expected network interfaces and ports
5. Test server connectivity with PING from the client machine
6. Test port connectivity using TELNET or PowerShell to the server and port (from step 4) from the client machine.  For example
a. TELNET <server-name> 1433
b. PowerShell: 1433 | % { echo ((new-object Net.Sockets.TcpClient).Connect("YourServerName",$_)) "server listening on TCP port $_" }
7. Check firewall settings if step 5 or 6 connectivity test fails

• I transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another and added more music on the same day. How do I get rid of my duplicate files without going through them one by one which would take forever?

Please help. I have transferred my iTunes library from one external hard drive to another plus added additional music now I have duplicates of the same music in many albums. How do I delete the duplicates without going through them one by one which would take forever? I understand how to get the "show exact duplicate" feature up on iTunes but, because they were added to the library on the exact day I can't seperate them I'm that manner. So each duplicate is right next to eachother in the exact duplicate screen.

My DeDuper script is designed to help clean up. See this thread for background.

• Is there an easy way to download my music from the iCloud to iTunes library on my new PC desktop so I can sync my iPod?  I have iMatch and cannot figure out how to do it in one fell swoop rather than by downloading each song, which will take forever!

Hi,
I have taken over my son's old PC desktop tower as it has more memory than my old PC.  I installed iTunes on it and have accessed via my iMatch account my music library that's in the iCloud.  I need to download it to the iTuned library on the desktop so I can sync my iPod.  I can only see how to do it song-by-song, which will take forever for my almost 5000 songs.  Is there a way to dowload the entire library in one fell swoop, letting it download without me having to do each song individually or monitor it?
Thanks,
RSG

Select all songs ctrl A, right click - Download.

No matter what wi-fi I'm connected to or browser I'm using, webpages take forever to load or they never load at all. Other computers do not have any problems. How can i fix this?
I've tried safari, chrome, firefox...I've cleared the cache as well. This has been going on for several months and used to be tolerable as it was not every website. Now it has become every website and is impossible to deal with. My roommates computer and my cell phone connect fine. I'm fully connected to the router yet websites don't load. I'm using 10.7.5. Thank you!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I have 15000 photos in my 1Phooto library in 58 events. I have also made 27 slide shows from some of these events. When opening iPhoto, the photoscome up slmost instantly but the side bar seems to take forever to come up.  Is there s limit to the amount of photos yu can have or to the amount if items in the side bar?

Try this basic troubleshooting technique:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

what is the trick with getting connected to airport WiFi?  It takes forever to go from the settings portion then to the browser to "accept" terms.  Am I missing something to speed the process?

OK, I figured out from the various postings on here and way too many hours overnight how to pretty much make the Yoga do what it is supposed to do. I've written up a step by step at this link that may help some of you with your problems as well
Let me know if this helps!

• Good speeds but takes forever to connect

I have a Mini directly connected to a wireless router and a Powerbook wirelessly connected. My ISP is Telus in Vancouver. My speeds are excellent but connecting itself takes forever it seems. When I click a link on a web page the staus bar reports "looking up hostname". It can take anywhere from 20 seconds to two minutes to load the page.
I thought the problem was with Telus but when a friend brought over his PC laptop it made connections with great speed. So now I assume it's a Mac issue. It affects both my Macs.
Telus can't help me. Their support suggested resetting the browsers but as I knew in advance it didn't make any difference. It affects all browsers on both machines.
Apple support didn't even seem to understand what I was talking about.
I posted a query at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14879923 and got this reply:
Well, I have some bad news and some worse news.
The bad news is, this is a MacOS problem. And yes, it is DNS.
The worse news is that getting a local DNS server will likely not fix the problem.
I had a G3 iBook for a while and I noticed this problem (I think I had OS X 10.0.3.) I don't have it anymore cause it was too frustrating. Literally, my P2-266 notebook with 64M RAM browsed the web a **** of a lot faster than the G3-500 with 384M RAM.
I got so frustrated and installed linux on the iBook and all those problems went away.
One of the problems may have been IPv6, but you mentioned that you disabled it.
The other issue was DNS lookup. It wasn't the DNS lookup that was the problem, but it was the reverse DNS lookup. When you connect to your ISP the ISP assigns you a hostname. It seems that OS X isn't setting this hostname to your computer. When you connect to a site, the site may have to look up the DNS for the hostname your ISP assigned to you, and because OS X doesn't seem to set it, it's them timing out trying to get your IP.
Seriously, if you google something like 'ibook slow dns' you'll get a TON of hits.
Is there something in the DHCP that you can enable that will let the ISP set your hostname?
Of course, if I'm wrong I'm sure someone else will point it out, but slow web browsing and DNS are a common complaint on the Macs.
Edit: I used Mac OS for about 4 days before giving up on it, so I won't be much help beyond this, but at least it gives you another path to look at.
Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I thought the problem was with Telus but when a
friend brought over his PC laptop it made connections
with great speed. So now I assume it's a Mac issue.
It affects both my Macs.
Try manually entering your DNS servers in sys prefs->network-> configure -> tcp/ip
There seems to be quite a few posts where OS X is not getting or setting name servers properly via DHCP.
Personally, I have never had a problem like this, so I don't know what's causing this. There are a few possibilities.
If your ISP's DHCP server and the OS X dhcp client are not communicating properly, that could lead to problems like this. Now, where is the fault in that scenario ? Could be the ISP using a crappy DHCP server, or it could be OS X dhcp client being to strict in what it will accept from the dhcp server, or it could be the fault of the dhcp client entirely. But it's probably not going to be resolved until someone who knows how to debug it is having this issue and takes the time to debug it.
I posted a query at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,14879923 and
got this reply:
Well, I have some bad news and
<snip>
The other issue was DNS lookup. It wasn't the DNS
lookup that was the problem, but it was the reverse
DNS lookup. When you connect to your ISP the ISP
assigns you a hostname. It seems that OS X isn't
setting this hostname to your computer. When you
connect to a site, the site may have to look up the
DNS for the hostname your ISP assigned to you, and
because OS X doesn't seem to set it, it's them timing
out trying to get your IP.
This explanation is just plain wrong, and, as was also pointed out, applying to a much older OS.

It's likely that your Library database has been damaged in all the crashing.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
