Connecting to Mac at other location

This probably will be a stupid question but I am wanting to see the best option for connecting to my mac at work from home or other locations. I didn't know if it was built into already like an ftp that you would connect to. I know there is also the option of Remote Desktop to actually see the desktop. I think that I might be ok just being able to see a list of the files and be able to download and upload them back to my mac at work but wanted to explore my options.

Hey Phil,
Most likely the main problem you would end up with is that your company will be blocking this. So you would 1st need to use VPN to get into your company's network. Once in, you can use regular AFP to get to files on your mac. If you enable sharing (System Preferences -> File Sharing). You also in there might want to add the folder(s) you want to share and set the permissions.
Then, when you used VPN you might see your Mac show up in Finder (Sidebar under Shared), if not then in Finder go to menu item "Go" and select "Connect to server". There enter your work's computer name and share.

In about an hour AR is going to start complaining about the cost being too high and wanting cheaper alternatives. The solution to each situation exceeds the value of the computers themselves. Don't bother asking if there is another less expensive way to do it because there is not.
Expect to pay at least $50 for one.
For the 8600 there's also a Belkin USB adapter that has OS 9 drivers and I believe there are PCI card wireless adapters that work under OS9 as well (although I can't recall which ones).
*Proxim Skyline PCI wireless card, that is what WAS sold and worked in 8.6-9.x - they are no longer made and the company was taken over by a larger one that stopped all Mac related support so no new drivers were made.
*Belkin has drivers for the F5D6050 USB device. They are OK, but not as reliable as one would want. Relative to each other the OSX drivers are better than the OS9 ones.
*Smart money would buy a wireless bridge.

I have a TC which is connected wirelessly to my router. I would like to connect a mac in another location via ethernet to the TC. I can't seem to get it to connect. Am I missing something?

I have a virgin Superhub which serves my wireless needs throughout the house. I have a Timecapsule which connects wirelessly to the router with no issues. I can backup my MBP over wireless easily. I have now got another machine in a different part of the house that I would like to connect to the network. It doesn't have wireless so ethernet is the only option. I have a number of options 1) run cabling - not really possible 2) buy a powerline network system or 3) use the timecapsule to connect to the network/internet.
I like option 3 because
(a) - I don't have to spend any more money and
(b) - my wife wont complain about cables also see (a)
Should using mixed wifi and ethernet clients on a timecapsule work? if so is it a feature I can use out of the box so to speak?

No a TC cannot do what you want.. it is now in dumb stupid wireless join mode.. and it turns off the ethernet ports.. in case you want to use the TC as a wireless bridge to multiple clients which is plainly wrong.. (only airport express is allowed to do this since it has only one ethernet port).
Welcome to Apple. (The plainly wrong above is a figment of Apple imagination.. of strict network protocols.. but unhelpful for a home device. maybe also to encourage sales of expresses.)

My paper work for my linksys says WEP 64 bits. I've tried changing my IPOD to that and it will say put in password and when I do I get "invalid password" or can not connect. Not that I'm aware of. You just export JPEG copies to a folder that you can point iTunes to. For instance, I have created a folder in my Pictures folder called Apple TV. And within that folder I have other folders of pictures that I can choose from in iTunes to share with Apple TV. But there doesn't seem to be any way to share a Lightroom slideshow. If you have laid to create a video file that would probably work. Apple TV is a little clunky in my opinion. Some things are a little more difficult to do now than they were a while back. I probably haven't provided you with much help, but just keep experimenting and I think you will figure it out.

Thanks for reply. I am not an expert on these sharing protocols but I think I have turned on SMB sharing but still wont connect. I tried adding netwrik drive by using cntrl K in finder and using smb\\network address but nothing. It is driving me mad!!

Becasue this has never been a feature of iphone/ipod/ipad. There is nothing to repair.

IPod touch connects to our wi-fi but cannot access the internet. It functions fine using other wi-fi at other locations just not ours at home. We have 2 other iPods in the house that use ours fine, with no issues....

I have done all the troubleshooting from the support page. The ipod shows that it is connected to our wi-fi and sometimes even shows the ip addresses but it wont let us connect to the internet/itunes store etc... the other ipods in the house use the wi-fi with no issues and this ipod is able to connect to public wi-fi and other location wi-fis and access the internet with no problems. What else do I do?

Thank you for your reply. I have tried your suggestion. Emmm I have an AirLive router, there are so many wires o.O I don't know which one to plug out. I think it is the yellow one which says WAN? But I wasn't so sure. So I tried plugging out each wire and followed your instructions. Sorry, but it didn't work I'm going mad xD! I even tried re-doing your instructions on WAN wire, and it didn't work.
Hmm according to step 4 (Log back into your network using Settings > WiFi > Other. Re-enter your network name (SSID), security, and network password.)
My network name is already available in the list. So I didn't need to do that. Or is it neccesary?

Do not worry about it.
Time Machine needs that your external drive is formatted in HFS+, or better known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". This filesystem is used by Apple on Macs and Windows cannot read or write drives formatted with this filesystem, being this the reason why all your devices do not read the external drive except your Mac.
You can only use your external drive to make Time Machine drives. If you store anything different, you may damage the Time Machine structure, so it is better not to use it as a drive to store other data. Instead, get another external drive to do it or create a second partition on the external drive formatted in FAT32 by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html FAT32 can be read by Windows PCs

Nobody but you sees that photo, it does not appear on outgoing emails.
To remove the picture rather than change it, open Address Book and select your personal card, then from the menubar select Card > Clear Custom Image. Now the system will use Apple’s generic user picture in the login window and System Preferences’ Accounts pane. Mail and Address Book will remain blank until you designate a new picture in Address Book or System Preferences > Accounts.

ESATA: connecting 2 mac pro's via esata to each other

has anyone tried to connect 2 mac pro's via esata directly to each other (instead of the slower ethernet connection)? i was hoping to install esata cards into the pci-express slots into 2 mac pros and instead of the usual ethernet connection between the 2 so they can file share, i was hoping for a faster estata connection if that is possible. would i see the computers in the usual finder window under "shared?" note: the mac pro's would be physically close to each other, so cable length connection is a non issue.

Hopefully no one would try this.

I m a networking student and I have learned to connect 2 machines on Red hat Linux OS on same Ethernet LAN which has same subnet mask. As Mac OS X is also a linux based OS I m trying to connect my Mac with my friends windows based machine using telnet <ip address of his machine>. However, I get a message "unable to connect to remote host".
Can anyone please tell me is this the problem because of different OS or it is something different!

The machine you're trying to connect to needs a Telnet server running on it - telnetd listening on port 23 (usually).
Incidentally, Mac OS X is not a Linux based OS, it is based on BSD Unix.

Copy the IP address of the printer from the Mac that can connect to it by itself. The IP shows when you start any print job.
Disable Printer sharing on this Mac.
Go to the Mac that cannot connect by itself and set up the printer from scratch using the printer's IP. To do this:
System Preferences / Print & Scan, then click the + sign, nxt select Add Printer or Scanner and click on IP. Fill in the info.
