Connecting to PPPoE

I have tried connecting to my college's wifi that requires an username and password. I did some research and i found some things stating the ipod touch does not suppor PPPoE but could soon. Is there an update that supports this yet since my touch is version 1.1.5?

I have not been able to connect... even after the upgrade. I use Verizon DSL. Would someone kindly tell me step by step as to a solution? Where exactly do I put my password and user name?
I have on recently started using apple products and lack a great deal of knowledge with apple products.
I must say though, that I am quite unsatisfied with the information both apple's manuals and google have provided me. For example, I had downloaded apps from the app store on my mac and they would not sync to my i touch. I did not know you needed and upgrade to use them. No where says you cannot use apps unless you purchase this upgrade. The upgrade on my itunes window said something along the lines of "you will be able to use the app store and download apps straight to your i touch". Maybe i'm just new to macs, or maybe that I cannot extrapolate from apple's description of the upgrade, but it's stupid for apple to assume that everyone knows... I find that unacceptable as a recent PC convert.

  • Airport Extreme no longer able to connect with PPPoE

Came home last night to find the amber light blinking on my Airport Extreme 802.11n. I figured it and the DSL modem needed a power cycle (they often do). However, even after power cycling several times I was still unable to connect to the internet. When I plugged my macbook pro directly into the DSL modem and used a PPPoE connection I have set up for just these times, it connected instantly. I tried upgrading the airport to the most recent firmware, no change. I tried downgrading several times until I got all the way back to the 7.3 release. Still no change. I have the macbook set to display connection time in the menu bar. When trying to use the airport for internet, it keeps saying "Connecting to PPPoE" but then fails. It will keep trying and failing.
I've had this exact setup for years, no problems. Could it be that the base station is dead? I can't understand how that could be since it seems like a software thing? Please help with any thoughts! Thanks.

I've only just got a Vigor 120 ADSL Modem (PPPoA->PPPoE bridge) and had some problems of a similar nature. Part of the problem (something Apple could address if they wanted) is that if you set it to PPPoE for WAN port, it can't talk plain Ethernet on that port so you can't see the ADSL status without unplugging the ethernet which of course resets the ADSL connection. It'd be nice if Apple allowed it to work. The easiest "option" I think they could add would be:
On the PPPoE page, an option "Route private addresses outside PPP" default to off.
Enabling this would mean any routed IP (modem is 192.168.2.1, airport LAN is 192.168.1.1/24) would not be PPP encapsulated if it was a private address (192.168..., 10...) allowing the status page to work and not breaking anything internet wise. I'm sure this wouldn't just be useful to me... Tell you what, Apple, if you make this happen, I'll upgrade to the new 802.11n dual band.
I was getting "Looking for PPPoE host" "Negotiating PPPoE connection" for ages. Some combination of resets and replugging the ethernet cable to the back of the modem did fix it, I haven't worked out exactly what works reliably yet and I don't want to screw up my signal->noise ratio more by doing unnecessary modem resets.

  • "not connected via PPPoE"? why, it was fine before!

Got up this moning and couldn't connect to the net.
My airport icon showed a scrolling message "cannot connect over PPPoE". Last night everything was fine, I think I even left everything connected over night.
I've been in touch with my ISP but they say the problem isn't with them. After much messing around, I've lost my old network name, a new one has been created, the icon shows good reception, the scrolling message has disappeared and I appear to be connected but...when I go to Internet Connect it gives me the message of "not connected"
Ironically, I'm currently connected to the Net via someone else in the building - their Newtprk shows up and works on my mac, but mine doesn't!
    What's my next step?

The first step is usually to pull the Airport Express and modem from power, waiting a few minutes, then plugging the modem back into power, waiting a minute, then plugging the Airport Express back into power.
If the Airport Admin Utility tells you the firmware version on your Airport Express is 6.2, I also suggest you install the more stable version 6.1.1 from:

  • How can i connect/disconnect PPPoe via Ethernet connected time capsule??

I connected the time capsule with Ethernet.
I set connect to PPPoe with "Manual" option.
I could easily control "Connect/disconnect" pppoe using AIRPORT (in the menu bar). But I could not find a way to "Connect/disconnect" via ETHERNET. (No ETHERNET icon on menu bar anyway...)
Could somebody help? THanks a lot.

Have you consulted the printer's user manual for setting it up as an Ethernet printer? You will also need to delete your current printer in Print & Fax and when you Add the printer you will need to do so as an Ethernet printer. This means you will add it either as an IP printer using either LPR or IPP protocol - depends on what the printer supports. An Ethernet device requires an IP address that is either manually configured on the device or derived if the device supports DHCP. If the former then the IP address you configure for the printer must be within the range of IP addresses used by your router (typically 10.0.1.2-10.0.1.199 for an AEBS/TC.) This should be covered in the printer's user manual.

  • Westel 7500 DSL Router/Modem: Cannot connect to PPPOE server

Westel 7500 DSL Router/Modem: Cannot connect to PPPOE server
My DSL connection periodically slows down to a crawl [less than 56kbps actual transfer rate].
When I reset my DSL Modem it takes 30 MINUTES to 4 HOURS to reconnect.
The Main status screen shows DSL connected at 1700/448 kbps.
Advanced status WAN Status shows DSL connected but PPPOE not connected.
I cannot ping the ISP router or the DNS Server.

Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
    Hmm...
#1 Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#2 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

  • Please help!  I try to connect to the Internet but appears inscription There is no expansion of kernel PPP. Yesterday I used internet through the same connection- Dsl pppoe

Please help!  I try to connect to the Internet but appears inscription There is no expansion of kernel PPP. Yesterday I used internet through the same connection- Dsl pppoe. Wi fi cannot connect too. On ipad and iphone it is work.

    That's odd.
Try this: Unplug your Time Capsule and your router. On your MBP, click the Wi-Fi icon and select "Open Network Preferences".
Click the lock icon to authenticate, then click the "gear" and select "set service order". Wherever AirPort (or Wi-Fi - I forget what Snow Leopard calls it) appears, drag it elsewhere in the list. Click OK, then Apply, then power up your router and TC.
If that doesn't result in any change, repeat the above but try making the service(s) you do not need "inactive".
The purpose of this is to reset or at least change your Network Preferences, which somehow got confused upon upgrading to SL.

  • Time Capsule cannot connect via PPPoe when MacBook Pro can.

I used to connect to the internet using my TC as a router, connecting via PPPoE using a DSL modem.
While my ISP had a problem with their network, the TC stop connecting to the PPPoE host and the amber light kept blinking. Because this was taking too long, I decided to investigate this issue.
I tried connecting my laptop directly to the modem, the restored my original configuration.
My MacBook Pro connected via ethernet to the DSL modem, is able to connect to the internet using a PPPoE connection. When I try the same via the TC, it just doesn't connect!
What should I do to troubleshoot this?
Is it possible that it is related to my ISP? Even though the laptop manages to connect via PPPoE.
Even the DSL modem when switched to router functionality is able to connect via PPPoE.
Only the TC seems to fail. What could be the problem?
(I have ruled out incorrect passwords and faulty wiring...)

There is some extra info I need.
What modem.. make and model..?? What kind of broadband?
How is the Buffalo setup? Is it router or bridged and if router is it using pppoe?
There is nothing wrong with keeping the buffalo .. it is a very reasonable router.. and just use the TC in bridge plugged into it..
I have to confess I really dislike the airport utility v6 in Mountain Lion.. it is a kiddie toy version of the real v5 utility. Half your problems relate to the near to useless nature of the utility.
Can you install 5.6 and then we can get somewhere.
    Here is howto..
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Internet Connect via PPPoE-- can I stay connected?

I connect to the internet via PPPoE and I'm wondering two things. First, is there any way to make it so the window that says "do you wish to stay connected to the internet?" no longer comes up? It comes up every 30 minutes or so, and is incredibly annoying, especially if I'm watching a movie or something.
Second, (though this may be the answer to the first question), is there any way to stay connected to PPPoE continuously. My computer automatically boots me after a while of inactivity if I leave my computer alone, and I'd like to turn this off.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Open the Network pane of System Preferences and choose Built-in Ethernet. From here, choose PPPoE, and then check if there is a reminder set here; if so, turn it off.

  • Can't connect via PPPoE in menu bar

    Hello,
After not touching my Network Configuration settings for like three years, a glitch in my Unison 1.8.1 newsreader prompted me to go in to check, but I then encountered the prompt that has been afflicting lots of people: "Network settings have been changed by another application."
So after some research here and via Google, I deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkConfig.plist and restarted the computer with the file still in the trash.
I then manually reentered my ISP Network Configuration info (TCP/IP and PPPoE, as I use ADSL), but since then, I have only been able to connect via the Internet Connect program, rather than my preferred method that I've always used of connecting by using the PPPoE drop-down menu "Connect" command in the menu bar in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.
Going back to System Preferences' Network Configuration, showing the Built-in Ethernet's PPPoE panel, the "Show PPPoE status in menu bar" box remains checked, and indeed does display in the menu bar, however, only with a functioning "Disconnect" command -- NOT the "Connect" command, whose functionality I am seeking to restore.
I realize this is more of a cosmetic problem, as I can still connect via the Internet Connect program, but would appreciate any tips for restoring the functionality of the PPPoE drop-down menu "Connect" command in the menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Hi Steve, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, move these files to the Desktop.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.<12 digit number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Then reboot once more.

  • Can't connect to PPPoE through Linksys anymore....

I've been running my Earthlink DSL through a router for 9 months without any problems. (Model: Linksys WRT54G v3.1)
But yesterday it seemed to just not work anymore.
When I connect the ethernet directly to my Netopia modem from my G4 MDD Powermac, I can connect easily with the 'automatic' settings.
HOWEVER... no matter how many different settings I try, I can't get the connection to work through the Linksys router. I keep getting the message 'Could not find PPPoE server'. The Network Settings says the ethernet is set up and trying to connect, but it can't seem to.
I've tried unplugging, pushing in the reset buttons and all sorts of other things, but nothing works.
I contacted Linksys and they claim you can reload the router firmware with a Mac. But after downloading their firmware update, I found it can't be opened by my Mac.
But I'm wondering if the firmware is even the problem?
    Any clues much appreciated....

That sounds like the exceptional tech support experience.
Frankly I'm shocked at how bad the earthlink tech support experience was. In the past it wasn't that bad. It used to be a 3 minute wait and then someone halfway knowledgeable would be there.
This time I waited through 4 minutes of brainless telephone ads until they put me through to the Phillipines to Moron #1 who started off asking in an almost impossilbe to understand accent "What eees your father's middle name?" and then "What ees your credit card number?"
I explained to him that he was supposed to as for the mother's maiden name and that I would NEVER give him my credit card number. And then... after another 3 minutes of telephone ads I got connected to another identical 3rd world slave labor tech person who simply asked me all the same questions over again
Needless to say, the experience was a sad reflection of corporate strategy... thinking this is going to get them customers.
Rant over... thank gosh for the Apple discussion boards!

  • Can connect w/ PPPoE... but not route

Ok.. I've been working on this off an on for over a month and I have reached my end, I think.
Problem: I have a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1. My ISP (through cable, not DSL) requires a PPPoE connection. I can get the Router to successfully connect to the ISP and ping from the router... but I cannot get any traffic through the router to the internet. I've tried multiple devices, both wired and wireless. Below I have attached some screen shots.. hopefully someone smarter than I can spot my error.
    PC's MAC address is cloned...
PPPoE connection established from the router...
I can PING the internet from the router...
I can PING the router from my PC...
But I can't ping the internet from my PC (through the router)...
Here is my network settings on the PC when attached to the router...
When I connect my PC directly to the modem, pppoe setup looks like this...
My network settings when directly attached to the modem...
And I can reach the internet when directly connected...
    Any ideas?

    Try a traceroute:
    traceroute 64.233.167.99
    traceroute 10.40.0.1
    traceroute 10.40.32.1
    See how far you get.
Otherwise this problem is difficult to troubleshoot through a forum. Your setup so far looks fully correct. If you run a firewall on the computer it may cause the problem. But other then that troubleshooting now would require to do some packet sniffing to find out how far packets get and/or what happens to the responses. This may indicate where the real problem lies. But computer and router seem to be set up correctly.
Beyond that you could try a factory reset pressing the reset button for 30 seconds. If there is an issue with the router configuration making the router operate like in router mode although it displays gateway mode this may solve your problem. Of course you have to set up the router again.
There may be a firmware upgrade available from the linksys web site for your router which fixes this issue.
Or change the mode to router mode, save the settings. Then change it back to gateway mode. Save the settings again. Maybe this fixes an incorrect setting in the router. You have to use gateway mode. In router mode you'll need a full IP address subnet from your ISP. As long as you use private IP addresses in your LAN you must use gateway mode.

  • Error message "not connected via PPPoE" when trying to connect using airport wireless

I cannot connect to my wireless internet connection using my ibook laptop. Using airport, I keep getting the message "host cannot find the PPPoE" or something like that. Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi, Bob. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Which exact iBook model is it? ("iBook" covers a lot of different Mac models, each with different capabilities.)
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Which version of the operating system is it running now?
What kind of optical drive does it have? (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, Combo, or SuperDrive?)

  • Cannot connect to PPPoE?  fibre optic Internet in Japan

    Hi I live in Japan
All the manuals and helplines are in tricky Japanese and I can't find out why I can't connect to the Internet! Help!
I get a message saying "cannot connect to the PPPoE server". It was working fine for a few months but now suddenly I can't connect to Internet . Strange thing is the "hikari Tv" tuner (fibre optic) set top box is working fine and all the channels come via the Internet connected with a cable to the same router box. This makes me suspect it is a problem with the MacBook.
I would appreciate any help although I guess it is an unusual circumstance.

Thanks for your responses people. I have since figured out how to get to the Linksys web admin site, and I also have the wireless connection to my MB up and running.
The remaining problem is that my flatmates lovely old Windows XP laptop (wired only) cannot now connect. I am pretty sure it is not an issue with the router, but her Windows machine is all in German, and my German is ok, but dealing with techie stuff is another matter.
    Any ideas?

Who is your ISP? What is the brand and make of the modem? Are you able to go online through your modem? What IP are you getting on the computer when connecting directly to the modem? It is possible that your modem doesn't require your router to be on PPPOE mode. Try setting the router to Automatic-Configuration DHCP.

  • Set up airport express to airtunes & internet when ISP connect using PPPoE

    Hi,
I got the following problem: I connect to the internet using airport extreme and the ISP use PPPoE protocol. Now I'm trying to set up my airport express to airtunes my music but the admin utility doesn't see it and it doesn't see the airport extreme as well. Internet connection works fine but cannot play music. any idea what I'm doing wrong? It seems that I have to change the settings to DHCP to make sure airport admin can see the two base stations but if I do so, internet doesn't work anymore.
    thanks for your help
