Connecting to Printer Through Ethernet to USB converter

I have a Dell 1700 USB-based printer connected to a Netgear P121 USB to ethernet adapterr. I am trying to use this as my printer.
How do I configure my .imac duo Intel computer to connect to the printer? I ahve tried to add a printer as a generic printer as a native Mac OS driver does not exist for the Dell 1700. I used the IP Address for the adapter as the location.
Thank you for the help.
  Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It looks like your printer understands PCL 6, in which case you should be able to use a Gutenprint driver for it. Tiger comes with GimpPrint (now Gutenprint) drivers, so you should be able to use one. You can go to www.gutenprint.org and read the instructions. You will also need to follow the instructions for your Netgear adapter, to find the proper method to add this printer.

  • Trying to connect 2nd printer through Ethernet Port of AEX b/g

    Hello all, Hello (maybe) Duane,
I do have a 2nd Airport Express b/g on our home network, and have a normal laser printer running as a wireless bonjour printer through that 2nd AEX, which is set up as a remote base station. I do have the Ethernet port free on that AEX, and want to connect a Brother 4040cn network ready color laser printer through the Ethernet port of this base station and use it as a bonjour printer? wirelessly... The AEX is set up as a remote base station to the main base station using WDS... I read a lot that the ethernet port only works when this station is in WDS mode - it is, but I still can't get it to work...
I talked to a guy at the Apple Store and he told me it should work, and that I somehow have to configure the Ethernet port of the AEX as a bridge so that could work.... ? It is not a supported solution (as expected...) so I tried to find that, but I am not able to work it out.
I can see the printer using the brother software, it shows me the status of the printer correctly, but I cannot get any printouts. The printing windows shows the printer, even lets me pick it as a bonjour printer, sends it off to the printer, but nothing arrives at the printer... I can use the web based printer management utility, which directly connects to the using the IP address, and can send stuff that is printed out, but i cannot get it working.
Hope that makes sense - anyone out there able to help?

    Hello,
If you wanted to setup a wireless network, you could look at some Wireless Ethernet USB adapters (will work just like the AirPort):
    http://www.afterthemac.com/
Understand that the "AirPort" is just Apple's fancy name for Standard WiFi Networking. It's not anything special. Just Apple's implementation.
So, any WiFi Ethernet Adapter is going to be compatible with Apple's Airport network.
If you want to use the standard USB to Ethernet adapters, then you could look to see if you can find a suitable driver that will either enable your adapter (the one you just purchased) to work, or perhaps find an adapter that has a 3rd-party driver and then purchase that one. The following website lists Mac OS drivers that will enable "Windows-Only" adapters to work:
    http://www.sustworks.com/site/newsusbethernet.html
The problem there, is that most USB to Ethernet (not wireless) adapters come only with Windows drivers. So, this website provides information and support to make those devices with with Mac OS X.
Otherwise, I have not found a pre-packaged USB to Wired Ethernet device that comes with Mac drivers.
But, the first website lists lots of USB to Wireless Ethernet adapters that come with Mac Drivers.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can Connect to Printer through ethernet network cable, but not through Time Capsule connected to ethernet

I am a lone Mac user in a very large, unsympathetic institution.  If I plug my MacBook Air into the ethernet cable in my office directly, I can print through the office printer.  If I plug the ethernet cable into a Time Capsule and connect my Air to the capsule wirelessly I cannot print to the office printer.  I can access the internet, so I know it isn't a problem with any of the hardware or the wireless connection.
Is it possible that the network, because of Time Capsule, shuffles me into a different subnet than the printer?  Why would it do this?  How would it know?  Is there any kind of fix possible?  (I use the Thunderbolt port to connect my Air to a monitor, so I can't use it to connect to an ethernet cable).
    Thanks.

Thank-you very much for this.  How do I tell if it is in routher and bridge?  How do I change it?
Tell me the IP address when you plug into the main network and can print..
Tell me the IP address when you connect wirelessly via the TC.
If they are the same IP range.. then you are on a bridged TC.. if they are different. Then you are on router mode TC and should bridge it.

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • By-passing Airport to print through Ethernet

I loaded Snow Leopard yesterday and could not find my HP Color LaserJet 5500dn, which is connected via Ethernet. Then I discovered it wouldn't recognized or communicate with it while I had Airport on. After turning Airport off, low and behold it recognized it.
How can I by-pass the Airport connection and go straight to Ethernet when using this printer, without having to disable Airport when I need to use it? And by the way, I use Retrospect to back up a system of Macs through my server, and for that to read each computer, I have to make sure Airport is disabled then, too. Any suggestions?

If your PS2 has network ability, you should get a standard straight-through ethernet cable. Then connect that cable to your router->PS2.
Follow the manual to configure PS2. You're on.
If your router is too far away, then look up "Internet Connection Sharing" and you will find hundreds of posts with people who are trying to "...+have my internet go to my {other computer} through my macbook ethernet port+..."
Your router should have a manual, on CD, or online.
Your PS2 should have manual for network (CD or paper, or online)

  • Faulty printing through ethernet (PhotoSmart C6280)

Hello, this is my first post. Nice to meet you and happy new year!
My printer is HP PhotoSmart C6280 and I connect it through ethernet to a gigabit switch.
The OS of my main PC is Windows 7 32bit and I use the latest HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers (v13.1.0).
In my LAN, I have manually assigned an IP address for my printer.
I'm facing faulty printing problems: I get 'breaks' in the lines of the printed page. I mean that some portions of the text are printed and other aren't.  Also, brightness/contrast of the characters is not the same throughout the page. I tried many times to clean and align the heads but without improvement.
After many tests I have noticed that this problem is more intense when there is network traffic, for example when I download files from the internet (through torrents or rapidshare).
I have another PC in my LAN which I use as a Home Server. This PC runs Windows Home Server and since there are not drivers for this OS, I use Microsoft's drivers for HP 990c, as suggested. The strange thing is that I have no problems when I send the print  from this PC (WHS with 990c internal drivers).
    Can you help?
    Thank you...

    Please help!
I suspect that it's a driver issue, since I can print fine through my second PC (Windows Home Server) with the windows internal 990c drivers, regardless of the network traffic.
Are there alternative Windows 7 drivers for my c6280 that I can use?
Better description of the problem: In my main PC (Windows 7) the printing shows horizontal gaps in the text lines and the brightness of the characters is uneven.

  • HP Laserjet 6MP fails to print with parallel-to-USB converter cable

I have a LaserJet 6 MP parallel printer which I was using in 10.3.9 with a parallel-to-USB converter cable. The Printer Utility saw it natively as a USB device and it printed just fine most of the time, although it would occasionally fail to print, so I installed a different driver called usbtb 1.0.15, and after that it printed very reliably.
Now I've upgraded to 10.4.9, and the Printer Utility still detects the HP printer natively as a USB device, and I also installed the formerly-reliable usbtb driver again, but the printer now fails to print with either driver. It acts like it's going to, but then it quits.
When I choose Print, all the features of the printer are shown, and I can select which tray to take paper from etc., and the printer dialogue box says "Printing," the activity light on the printer flashes just as it always does when printing is in progress, but then, instead of printing, the activity light stops flashing and the print job disappears from the dialogue box.
Can anyone tell my why this printer is failing to print now, and how I might be able to get it working again?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Wait a minute! It's only certain Indesign documents that won't print.
    All TextEdit docs will print.
I created a few scribbles in Photoshop and they print.
But with InDesign, there is no predicting which documents will print or will not print. On some that will not print, if I remove all but one text box, then they will print. On other documents that do print, if I copy some text off of one that won't print and paste it in, then that one stops printing too.
On some that won't print, if I erase everything on the page and create a new text box and type a few words into it, the page will print. If I revert to the previously saved version, once again the page won't print.
What kind of craziness is this, anyway? It seems random. I can't figure it out.
Even on the documents that won't print, when I try to print them the printer's activity light blinks as though it is just about to print, but then the light goes out without printing.
Anybody got any ideas what this problem is and how to fix it?
All I know is that EVERYTHING printed before I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.9.

  • Lost connection to printer through switch

I have a SRW2016 switch, WRT600N router.  I have 3 laptops, 2 printers, sat box, NAS, blue ray player, skype phone, and XBOX 360 connected to the switch.  I have a couple VLANS set up, nothing complex.  My wifes computer was printing fine.  Now the printer stopped.  My computer works fine through the net.  Both of us have Windows Vista SP2.  I can ping my computer, the NAS, and the router fine from my wifes computer.  I can't ping the switch or either of the printers.  She has access to the internet with no problems.  I disconnected the SRW2016 and connected her computer through a SD2008 as an experiment.  Her computer pings the pinters and can connect and use them.  As soon as I connect to the SRW2016 nothing.  I suspect the switch is the problem.  I checked the settings on the switch and I don't see anything differnet.  I did a netsh int ip reset and also cleared the counters on the port she is connected to.  I'm at a loss.  Can someone give me a couple ideas to try?
    Thanks
    jjbender

I had them set up in a different VLAN than the computers.  I had 7 VLAN's.  I think too many for a home setup.  It did work fine.  My computer is still working, just my wifes computer.  I can't ping the switch or the printers any longer.  She can connect to the internet and ping my computer.  She can ping the Xbox 360 which is on a different VLAN which I set up for access.  She can connect to the NAS which again is on a different VLAN with access.  Only the switch and the printers.  The 2 printers were on a VLAN to themselves.  I like messing around to learn.  What I finally did was reset the switch to default and set only a total of 4 VLANs.  1 is the default and nothing in it, 2 is the network which I have all computers and the router connected to this also gives me access to the internet, ports g1=router, g5 thru g8 computers, VLAN 3 is the data, g3 HP mediasmart (future), g4=CE NAS, g12=Xbox, g13 and g14 the printers.  VLAN 4 misc, g9=Netgear Skype phone, g10=Sat box, and g11=Blue Ray player. This is how I have it set now,  This is simpler and now everything works.  She's back to printing again.  I still would like to figure out what happened.  I'm learning
    Thanks

  • WRT54GS not able to connect wirelessly, or through ethernet

Hello all, I have a problem with my WRT54GS router that has just popped up over the last couple of weeks.  It is connected to internet via ethernet cable. Light shows receiving signal. Wireless signal is intemittent, but unable to connect wirelessly.  Direct connection from router to desktop does not allow internet access.  All port lights on router work when something is plugged into them.  Am currently accessing internet via direct connect from modem to desktop. I have attempted to reset router when connected to ethernet, but my wireless internet connection only lasts about 1 minute, then I lose that capability. I still don't get any connection thru wired desktop.  Therefore I am not able to work with router settings or anything.  Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Also check the routers DHCP IP address maybe conflicting with the ISP modems IP address of 192.168.0.1. Check to see if this is the same on the ISP modem, and if modem can't be bridged, change the DIR router to 192.168.1.1 or .0.254.
Prefered connection method with a ISP stand alone modem:
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. Ensure modem is working well too. Bad modems are out there as well. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

  • How do i connect a printer via ethernet?

    greetings.
i run an imac 20 inch late 2006 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.7.4 and i would like to connect a sharp al-1655cs printer/copier/scanner directly to the mac.  first off, i know sharp doesn't have a mac driver for this machine; but i'm hoping i can come up with some sort of "plain vanilla" solution.  i've tried to establish the connection via usb and ethernet with no results.  via usb, the mac identifies the sharp, thinks it delivers a print job, and 10 minutes later declares the job complete with no actual output.  via ethernet, i'm not able to add an acceptable ip address (the one given on the side of the machine 080014 6d3efc -- which i've tried in groups of two, three and four separated by periods or colons).  i do have a wifi router and could patch the printer into that but, frankly, i'd like to avoid buying a 20' ethernet cable.  i've looked far and wide across the interweb and am not finding any help specific to direct ethernet cabling a printer to a mac running running 10.7.4.  i'm pretty tech-capable, so don't be shy suggesting solutions.  any help to get this going would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the software is only for Wintel machines. Sharp does state in its manual that the AL-1655CS can be used by Apple machines via the USB 2.0 port. But in reality, you need to be running Mac OS 10.3 and above to use the printing, network, and scanning applications native to OS X or through 3rd party applications, like Photoshop.

  • Connecting a printer via Ethernet to Router

I have just migrated from HH3 to HH5.  Using HH3 I had an Oki MFP connecting via an ethernet cable to the router, and all computers using the router wirelessly could then also use the printer.
However, I have now spent about six hours trying to get this to work on the HH5 to no avail.  Oki Help Desk have checked absolutely everything, and it is clearly something to do with the new router rather than the printer.  I know that the router is not meant to function as a print server, and so I suspect that BT have now changed something so that this will no longer work (they said it didn't work previously, but clearly it did because I was using it for years!)
Would just like to know definitively if this will definitely not work, having spent so much time on it, and knowing that it used to work.  Oki have stated that there is possibly some reserved IP addresses that could be used for this.  I have tried using the IP address that is allocated to the printer and then manually changing the IP address on the printer as well and connecting to that, but none of these work.  Does anybody know if there are there any IP addresses that will work or will this definitely not work at all?
If I cannot attach my printer this way, how should I be installing my printer so that others can share it over the network?
    Thanks for your help.

    I am pleased it worked
Their definition of sharing is unlikely to be the same as what Windows networking expects, so it should not make any difference.
Sharing would normally refer to the case when you have the printer connected via USB, and you want other Windows devices to be able to access it, via you computer.
You would not find my website on a web search, as its restricted to BT Internet customers, and search engines cannot index it

  • Connect to Printer Through Airport

OK. I have a wireless network set up in the house, however, the router and modem and upstairs, and the printers are downstairs. The Airport Express would not be connected directly to the router as they are in different rooms. Can I hook up the network printer and USB printer to the Airport Express and then print to them wirelessly via a laptop on my regular network? Do I have to join a different network to print? How can this be done? Can it be done?
    Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried with the network printer, but USB printer is fine. You can be the first to report back. The ethernet port on the Express can be used as a WAN (to create a network) or a LAN (to hook up to a Mac or ethernet printer).
Do I have to join a different network to print? How can this be done? Can it be done?
During the setup of AirPort Express via AirPort Utility, you would select +Join existing wireless network+. Enter your existing network name, password and encryption protocol. Restart AE.

  • Can't connect to printer through Router - Help!

Brand new to Mac & getting frustrated. I have a SMC router with a Pixma ip6600D connected to the usb port on the router. I can connect to the internet without a problem and the printer works fine if I plug it directly into the MacBook. However I cannot get the Mac to find it via wireless. I downloaded the Gimp drivers (there is no ip6600D on the list). Apple has no clue, Canon was no help, and neither was SMC. I have spent over 12 hours on the phone with various Tech support folks with no answers. Nobody can suggest a work around or even whether or not a new router will solve the issue. By the way, my laptop PC and desktop PC's work fine interfacing with the router and printer. So much for the "I'm a Mac and I'm as PC" commercials being accurate! Help, anybody!!! Thanks.

If the printer setup utility in OS X can't find it automatically, do a manual setup by clicking the + symbol in the printer preferences window, then click the IP option at the top of the panel. You can then enter the printer's network IP address and other information manually.
