Hello.
One of our users at our company uses a mac pro with snow leopard. We have an odd problem where only ONE of servers cannot be accessed by the mac. The machine CONNECTS into the server, sees the folder structure, however it will not show ANY contents on the server. All of the permissions for the user are set accordingly. I can access all of our other servers just fine and see all the contents, but it's just one that lets us connect in but show no contents. Does anyone have any ideas I could try to fix this?

We are running an XSERVE with Mac OS X 10.5.5 and have multiple clients that connect to it (mac and windows).
For some reason yesterday one of the clients (10.4.11) when connects to the file share using the smb protocol shows up with 0kb available and he is not able to copy any files. Every other computer shows 4TB available. When I connect to the share on his machine using my credentials I get the same problem. However, when I connect using his credentials on my machine it shows up correctly with 4TB free. Also, when he connects via AFP it shows the full 4TB. Any idea what could be causing this?
(the reason he connects via smb is because for some reason the people on 10.4.11 experience very slow AFP transfers sometimes. If anybody knows whats causing this that would help too hehe) Thanks in advance to anyone that takes the time to help me.

If it is an identical machine, put the machine that works fine into target disk mode and boot the machine that is having issues from the other machines drive. That will eliminate most hardware issues.
My guess is it is a system file or a settings file in the users library. I have fixed several issues like this on computers that were running 10.4 I believe and think they were upgraded from 10.3 by someone else. The issue had something to do with permissions and files.
Try some of the following:
- create a new user on the computer and see if that user works. if so, it's something in the user folder (most likely User/username/Library/). If not, then it is something outside the user folder.
Try
- running a combo Update on the machine
- run disk utility file and permissions on the drive
- Backup the user folder and clone the drive that works onto this drive, and move the user folder over. (assuming you know how to do that, it is easy)
REGARDING Slow AFP - having the same issue with 10.4.11 Server. Most clients are Leopard. Intermittent, so hard to diagnose. Tried several solutions on this wait and see issue.

That's not much to go on.
What operating system and version are you using? Are you using the most recent version of iTunes? If so, did you update prior to this happening? What other changes might have triggered this? What troubleshooting have you done already and what was the result?

Folder looks locked when connecting through SMB on SL server

Hi,
After finding a workaround to another issue I'm having with AFP, I've decided to connect my clients through SMB. Being the guinea pig, I'm testing this on my mac first which is running SL 10.6.3, the Server is running 10.6.2. When I connect through SMB, the Share points doesn't show as a remote server, but as a folder, is that normal? Second, it has a locked sign on it has well as on most of it's content, which I can browse, even it it says it's locked or rather that I don't have the permissions to access its content. So how do I fix this so that I can see a regular mounted sharepoint, and that see the correct folder icon, or how do I fix the permission in SMB? I'm using ACL with the workgroup default for my main group in SL serveur.

Just an update on this, I just figured out that you had to change the POSIX permission, or at least I that was the problem since it fixed it. Now though, the folder permission gets a bit more tricky. I can create a folder from computer A, save a document to that folder from computer B, open, edit and save from computer A that same document. But If I create a document on computer A, in a folder created also on computer A, I can't drag and drop that document in the finder to a folder created by computer B. Weird huh?
Any help would be great on this!

Greeting,have a simple question for Java Gurus,I am using Tomcat and servlets for my projects running on NT platform connecting to Oracle/Sybase servers on Unix boxes my problem is I want to show directory contents on unix box.. show directory name , filesize, date etc on browser to select file and load into database.
Please help me with code and ideas, partly or fully.

If your servlet container is running on NT, the only way to show something on the remote unix is to telneting that unix box. You can look on the telnet task of Ant tool for examples. http://jakarta.apache.org/

Connecting to smb servers

Will Yosemite address the Mavericks problem in connecting to smb servers?

We have this problem in our office too. Have talked to apple support, microsoft support, two different IT consulting companies, and multiple "techy" friends of the company - all to no avail. Most seem to say the same thing "there's nothing wrong with your connection" - I suppose because technically it can still connect to the server. But yes it IS a real PROBLEM! So here's the specifics on our end:
MS Server 2012 - Multi volume/drive server managed by IT consultant, all service packs, patches, yada yada, etc. installed and functioning
To connect (mount) - In finder, use command K to connect to server. Address: smb://XXX.XXX.X.XX/Volume Name
Enter credentials for access
Spinning Wheel
Eventually volume mounts.
Try to open a folder - folder content empty.
Wait 10 minutes or so, folder content populates.
Open sub-folder
folder content empty.
Wait 10 minutes or so, folder content populates.
and so on.
Also drops connection completely if the screen saver comes on - then you have to start the process over.
This was not how the system behaved previous to Mavericks update.
Workarounds we have tried:
Use cifs instead of smb - a bit faster but connection is still lost on sleep and folders still take a long time to populate.
Use 3rd Party app like Pathfinder - works much better but really?! I have to pay $40 per user to do something the OS should already be doing at a basic minimum!
Specify port 139 - trying this now - seems a bit faster but too soon to tell.
Bottom line - I really hope this is addressed in Yosemite too - otherwise I'm going to wipe my system and go back to an earlier OS version. fun.

Then you will need to try restoring it once more:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU) mode:

Disabling 'Show window contents while dragging' also disables window snap - is there a workaround?

When I disable 'Show window contents while dragging' in Performance Options, it also automatically disables the ability to snap windows the left and right and corners by dragging them. I have an older computer, and disabling this really improves the performance,
but I'd really like to keep the ability to snap the windows around, as it's one of my favorite features.
Is there a way to just disable showing window contents while dragging without disabling the window snap feature?

Hey there. I've been trying to figure out why my snap wasn't working, and this is the only post I've found that mentioned it.
I found snap wasn't working on my machines sometimes and realised it happens after I start an RDP session which disables the "show window contents while dragging" option, but then doesn't seem to enable it properly after the session ends.
When I check the option, it is already ticked, so I need to untick and re-tick, then apply and snap starts working again.
I don't know if there is any connection with the "Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen" option under the mouse ease of access settings.
It does seem like a new issue though as it doesn't happen under Win8

Yahoo mail page shows blank content when opened in fedora 12. the same opens in windows

I recently installed fedora core 12 on my lenovo ideapad s10-3 to dual boot with windows7. I connected to internet and opened yahoo mail. when i viewed a mail (any mail) it does not show any content. When I open the same mail in windows, I see the content. I am using Firefox browser in both operating systems.

antivirus was not a problem since there was not one installed. Firewall settings are fine. I did just finally resolve this issue. Spyhunter was able to detect a couple of hijackers that the other programs did not and this fixed the problem. As I stated in the original post I did suspect this was the issue. The lesson learned is to run multiple malware programs until you find one that eliminates the problem if you suspect malware as the problem.

Can't connect using SMB, but can with CIFS

I'm trying to connect to a windows share from my PB running tiger. I can connect fine in finder going 'Network/Workgroup/PC_Name/' but if I us the 'Go > connect to server' in finder I cannot.
I click go, connect to server and type "//192.168.0.3/My Documents/' it says cannot find sever. Same if is use the smb prefix.
When I get info on the share it says CIFS://WORKGROUP;MARK@PC_NAME/My Documents/
so I can't understand why I cant connect using SMB, I've checked directory access and SMB is enabled, workgroup is set. I know I've been able to connect via SMB before, not sure why I can't now?

For the longest time I have had an Alias of all my remote PC servers in the Dock. One click and I'm connected. As of 10.4.5 those Alias' no longer work. When I click on them instead of getting the volume mounted and ready, I get a the login window with the Workgroup and User Name asking for the password that should be in the Keychain. I enter the password and click connect and get nothing. No errors, no pings, just the Network icon in the Dock turns into a ?.
I go to the Network Browser and the servers show up in their proper workgroups. I click the server, get the login window, put in the password and get an error that the "Server" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. With three buttons "Delete Alias", Fix Alias", and "OK". If it can't be found, then what is it showing me in the browser?
I have 10.4.4 on another partition for emergency backup use in the event 10.4.5 fails (and it is). I went to 10.4.4 and all works just fine. All this started in 10.4.5.

WinXP AD users can't connect via SMB

Server is an Intel Xserve, 10.5.8.
Windows users get authentication errors when attempting to connect via SMB on the Mac server. The server is bound to Active Directory, and the Mac users are able to connect via AFP just fine. Macs also cannot connect via SMB. I get the error message "NTSTATUS_WRONGPASSWORD" when the user attempts to log in.
Local users are able to connect via SMB, but I don't want to re-enter a dozen or so PC users on this server if I can avoid it.
In the /var/db/smb.conf file there is an entry for a password server that may not be correct, but if I change it to the password server I've been instructed to use, the file flips back to the original setting when I stop and start the SMB service. I think if I make changes to the /etc/smb.conf file outside the END section, where the comments say to make changes, they will carry over to /var/db/smb.conf, but I'm not sure of the syntax.
If you need me to post the testparm output I can do that.

You're going to have to look into potential underlying issues.
I don't know what's happened for you, but I have an identical type setup for a client done over a year ago and no such problems have occurred.
What does the UNEDITED (please !) result of (using the Terminal) the following show:

What happens when a user can't connect (error message, loginwindow shake) ? Are all client machines & the server using a common (eg internal) time-server ?

I'm having problems connecting my AIRHelp app with Webhelp Pro on Robohelp server.
In the Adobe AIR SSL there is a field to enter the 'Show Online Content'.
On Robohelp server, my project have the link: http://<server>:<port>/robohelp/server?project=tips
What should the link be in the "Show Online Content" field? The same link does not work, even if it works when opening the project in a web browser.

That would not work...
What you have to do is save the uploaded file content on to a location and then pass the fileName as a request parameter to a deidicated which displays the contents of that file.

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

I am trying to Show Package contents of iMovie and it freezes at the hr.lprog folder

While doing a virus scan my machine would freeze on the file
Applications/iMovie/Contents/Resource/hr.lprog/Title-SidewaysDrifting.nib/keyedo bjects.nib.
Bitdefender said to send them the file.
I am able to "Show package contents" of iMovie, and open the Contents and Resources folder. When I try to open the hr.lprog folder, I get the spinning beach vball of death and I have to reboot my machine using the power button.
Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Is the hr.lprog folder just the language files for Croatia? If so, can I safely delete them, or is there more to it?

My guess would be that your hard drive has become corrupt, and the corruption is affecting something about that folder or its contents such that when the Finder tries to display them, it crashes. I would recommend immediatelyrepairing with Disk Utility. Also, if you don't have any backups, now would be a good time to start, before something bad happens.
If repairing the hard drive doesn't work, I would try deleting and reinstalling iMovie.
Also, note that I don't recommend BitDefender. Read my Mac Malware Guide, and if after reading that you want to have anti-virus software, use one of the programs it recommends. BitDefender has performed poorly in my anti-virus software testing, both in the first round and the second round of testing.
