Connecting to Sony 1080 HDTV
I've connect my probook to the TV with a VGA Cable and have a decent picture when viewing on- line movies. When I connect the cable to the computer all icons on the computer screen get larger. I've been playing with various computer display settings but would like to know if there's a "standard" I should use. I have a choice in the display Color LCD and VGA display. Both offer a variety of choices. Any suggestions on the "best" choices?
dvi alone typically implies dvi-d
but you need the -something after the letters 'dvi' to properly define which type of dvi
the current apple mbp dvi port is 'dvi-i dual link', it has both digital (essentially hdmi, but without all the features) and analog (vga) outputs (dvi-d dual link plus vga)
dvi-i is multiple standard, so it accepts a number of different connectors, for connecting to hdmi on your tv, you'd use a dvi-d connector to the mbp
so...
you can use either the apple adaptor to connect a vga cable
or get a dvi-d to hdmi adaptor (cheap) and use an hdmi cable
i find using hdmi gives much better picture quality than vga

Connect Macbook to Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI?
I am trying to connect my Macbook to a Sony Bravia HDTV via HDMI, but are unable to get one to recognize the other. I am not sure what the problem is.
I have the following set up:
- Macbook 13" (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2, 10.4.11)
- Apple Mini DVI to DVI adopter
- 15' DVI to HDMI cable (from monoprice.com, same cable recommended elsewhere in these forums)
- Sony Bravia KDL46W3000, (Full HD 1920 x 1080 p)
The Sony tv does not seem to recognise the Mac is connected (and/or vise versa). The screen is just black. Yes, I have tried all 3 of the HDMI inputs on it, Yes, I have set the tv input setting to match the corresponding input jack. HDMI does work on the tv though, as I have a DVD player connected via HDMI and that works fine.
The Mac Display preference pane does not detect the tv/monitor being connected. I normally use another external LCD monitor with the Macbook via mini DVI to VGA adaptor without any problem. I have tried various solutions others have mentioned for similar problems I found in these forms, such as turning the tv off then on, rebooting the Macbook before connecting, etc. and every other combination.
An hour on the phone with Sony tech support did not get me anywhere closer other than they say the Mac should recognize the tv as an external monitor.
Has anyone with a very similar configuration managed to get this to work? Please note, I am well aware that many many people use HDTV's as a external monitor, but this is a Sony Bravia, not a LG, or Samsung, or anything else. Also, it is a Macbook, not a Powerbook or anything else. Also, I am trying to connect via HDMI, and not VGA.
Any tips or success stories would be appreciated.

My DVI->HDMI cable is a cheapie that I think I bought at Frys. This type of cable is probably getting harder to find as most stuff is straight HDMI now. Anyone thinking of getting a new flat screen should strongly remember to get one with at least 3 HDMI ports unless they are into cable switch-a-roo when connecting various devices. The stock devices today are cable/satellite, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD/DVD and one for the old Mac. -
How to connect MacBook 2009 to Sony Bravia HDTV?
Hi everyone! I received a Sony Bravia HDTV as a gift (lucky me!), and I want to connect my MacBook from 2009 to it so I can stream Netflix movies onto my laptop and watch them on the HDTV. I have a Mini-DVI port (video out) on the MacBook, and HDMI on the TV. A couple of questions:
- What cable(s) do I need?
- Do I need a separate cable for audio?
- Has anyone tried to stream Netflix this way (directly from the laptop), and was it successful?

When you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate input plugs for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. You'll have to contact Sony support to see if the Bravia has an audio plug that will work with one of the HDMI plugs. -

My Sony Bravia HDTV is not a smart TV. How do I setup connection between the Apple TV, Comcast HD box and the Sony. I believe the HDM1 cable goes from the Sony to the back of the Apple TV, but what cables connect the Sony back to the Comcast box?

How to connect a Sony Bravia TV to the internet through your Airport network
Since it took me a lot of time to figure out how to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the internet through my Airport network, I better share how to do it. Hopefully saving others a lot of time.
My 32EX600 Sony Bravia TV is Ethernet connected to my Mac Mini, which is part of my Airport network, together with another Mac, an Airport Extreme Base Station and an ADSL modem/router. Moreover, the Mac Mini is connected to the TV by HDMI.
Whatever I tried in the TV’s Wired Network Set-up (Auto, or Manual with manual IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS IPs), I couldn’t get it right. Cable Connection and Local Access were mostly OK, Internet Access always Failed.
The solution lies in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences of the Mac Mini. In the Internet Sharing item of that panel, you should choose to “share your internet connection from WiFi to computers (the TV in this case) using Ethernet“, and NOT (as I had chosen before and seemed so obvious) “share your internet connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet“. After that change, the Bravia Network Set-up, using the Wired and Auto options, flawlessly connected to the internet. No expensive (Sony) WiFi USB dongle needed.I have now had a detailed reply from Sony Europe and the way to do this is to:
1. Press Home on the TV Setup
2. Use the right and left arrow to select Setting.
3. Use the up and down to select Network, press Enter.
4. Select Network Setup.
5. Select Wireless setup.
6. Select Scan
7. Select your network
8. A new screen will appear asking for entering the security key.
9. Enter your WPA2 key.
10. Select Enter.
11. It will take you back to the same screen asking for entering the
security key.
12. Press the right arrow.
13. Select Auto.
14. Press the right arrow.
15. Select Save and connect.
These instructions are not the same as shown on the TV but they worked fine for me so they may help others with a similar problem. -

The airport utility has nothing whatever to do with the sony bluray player.
The airport utility is to setup wireless in the airport.. once you setup wireless then you use the sony setup for wireless in the player as per its manual.
Please do keep the wireless names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
As well as pure alphanumeric passwords if you want to do this successfully. -

How do I connect my Sony Bravia tv as a monitor for my MacBook Pro? I have an hdmi lead with an adapter to the computer and get a picture of factory setting cosmos with some of the folders of my desktop going off the side of the tv screen.
If you have the right cable, and have set the right input on your Sony, then you need to adjust one thing. Go to System Preferences>Displays>Set Mirroring. I think you've got it set to Extended desktop, which means the Sony is just a HUGE extension of your Mac OSX desktop.
That should fix your issue. -
2009 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz (EMC no. 2267). I don't get any audio when connecting my Sony HD TV to my iMac via mini DisplayPort. Is there a fix or hardware upgrade? I'm using a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable w/ audio support.
You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV. -

Look at your Sony camera or read the instructions for same. It probably will be a mini USB connector. If it is, you will need a mini USB/USB wire.

Probs connecting 13"MBP to HDTV via Receiver
Hi guys,
I tried to hook up my MBP to my HDTV via my Onkyo receiver using the Mini Displyport-HDMI cable.I got a weird colour screen on my MBP and then it went blank,with no picture on either the HDTV or the MBP.
I then tried connecting directly to the HDTV using the same cable and it worked fine.
Has anyone any ideas as to why i'm having problems connecting through the receiver?

GaryThe receiver isn't a monitor, so it doesn't look like a monitor to the computer, and apparently it isn't "transparent" enough to let the computer see through it to your monitor or TV set.
You may want to connect the computer's video signal directly to the TV and use the receiver only for the audio, via a separate audio cable from the computer's headphone port. -

The only way to stream directly to your TV would be if it is an AirPlay-enabled device.
There are many AirPlay-enabled devices but I am not familiar with Sony's products. If yours do not specifically indicate AirPlay capability, then you need an AirPlay-enabled device such as an AppleTV connected to your Sony TV or Sony AVR. -

The MB053LL/A is the 2nd generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). This number is the base station's Product or Order number. The Model# for this base station is: A1143 and should be printed on a label on one of its sides.

What happens when, after you connect your cam, you go to File > Import Media?
But before that, does your cam require you to export your video files upon USB connection? I have a JVC Everio HD and I have to "Export to Library" from the cam's menu first-thing. This was true even in prior iMovie versions. -

You can connect the TV via the Thunderbolt port. However if the result is "better resolution" would depend on what resolution you have now (I'm guessing you mean with the HDMI adapter?)
I'm myself connecting the Mini Mac with a Thunderbolt->VGA adapter to my TV and get full 1920x1080 resolution.
Have you checked your Display settings? Make sure mirroring is off, then check what resolutions you can get on the current connection.
