Connecting to the Internet While Traveling

I am new to wireless and have been connecting to the internet on my MacBook using a standard ethernet cable at home. But now I'll be traveling and want to have internet access as many places as possible. Can someone please help with instructions on what I need to do/buy, etc.
Thanks!

One thing to carry is an ethernet cable, as hotels often have ethernet ports in the rooms.
There usually isn't any trouble receiving mail, but there may be in sending it if the hotel is not using your ISP's server. Usually a call to your ISP will tell you which port number to use for outgoing mail while traveling. This is set in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced.
For wireless, usually you just turn on the wireless, and if it doesn't find any of your usual wireless networks, you will be asked if you want to join a network that it can find. You can just click on the network and then on "join", providing a password if required.
You can practice this at your local wireless cafe or local wi-fi hot spot.
One precaution--don't do anything sensitive like banking at a popular free hot spot--save that for a more private setting. You don't want someone looking over your shoulder getting passwords, for example. I'm not totally up on what's safe and what isn't, and maybe someone will post some more explicit information, but I'd stick to innocuous things until you know more about what is safe and what is not.
Good luck, and happy traveling!

What is the difference between roaming and Wi-fi.  I'm going to EU in a week.  Your answer implies that if I use the Wi fI in the apartment I'm staying at for my Mac or my Iphone, I won't have to pay extra.  Do I have that right.  My carrier is ATT on my phone.
That's right, wifi is free around the whole world (except if you have to pay to access a protected network). It doesn't matter whether you're with ATT or Verizon. Beaware to turn off Cellular and Data Roaming as it is very costly if you don't have an int'l plan.  I think the cheapest ATT int'l plan at this moment is $25 for 50MB.
Also, you can text anywhere in the world for 50 cents with cellular and data roaming off.  At this rate, you're not going to be popping 50 text messages back and forth, but for a few, I find it to be very reasonable.  It's cheaper to text a fellow traveler than to call him/her at int'l phone rates.  The cheapest text plan is 50 messages for $10.  See ATT.com for other plans.
Another option to consider is Skype. With a wifi signal, you can call anywhere in the world for about 2 cents a minute.  When I set my Skype account up, they required a $10 prepayment.  At 2 cents a minute, that's 500 minutes.  While I think I set my Skype account up from Europe, I think it might be easier to do it here.  Skype works great on both my iPad and my IP.

If you are the only user on your computer you probably don't have multiple user accounts set up and can disregard that.  If you are using iTunes 11 go to View>Show Sidebar.  Now see if your iPad appears under Devices on the left side when you connect it.  If it does, click on the name of your iPad on the left side and your iTunes sync settings options will appear in folders with tabbed headings to the right.
If it doesn't appear on the left side, follow the troubleshooting steps shown in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538.

If you have truly tried "everything" then there is no hope of it ever working again. However, have you tried rebooting your router?
Have you tried Settings/General/Reset - Reset network settings?

    Hi Romantilizer,
Hook your phone up to iTunes on the computer you sync with and do your update from there. This is a robust iOS release, and doing it OTA is not always successful. I tried on my iPhone a couple of times, and it aborted the update twice. Did it via the Mac, and it was fine.
It takes a bit of time, so hook it up, make sure it is updating your phone, and then find something else to do for a couple of hours.

  • Why is there a warning that i am not connected to the internet while i'm advised that a need a java-runtime

    hi,
on two occasions, when trying to start an application, i received a warning saying i need a java runtime (?) but that i was not connected to the internet while in fact I was. I controlled this by selecting the system network preference which confirmed my internetconnection was working properly?
    thanks in advance
ps: sorry for my language as i am not a native speaker
    patrick

Because the machine is not able to resolve the name of the server where it needs to get the Java runtime from.  Seem to be a lot of wonky DNS out there.
Temporarily switch your DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4, open a terminal, and type 'java -version', to get it to install the runtime.
Then put your DNS back the way it was.

  • Some of my Mac apps can´t connect to the internet, while Firefox can

All of a sudden, Safari, ITunes, Software Update, can´t connect to the internet.  It happens in my office and in my house.  Have not checked other networks.  Firefox wors fine, as does Mail (for now).  What can be the problem?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • My Macbook will not stay connected to the internet, while my Dell computer works fine. Why? What can I do?

My sister and I both have Macbook Pros that will not stay connected to our internet (wifi). Our dell computers and HP computers in the household work great- but both of the Macs do not stay connected, and often say "you are not connected to the internet". I have saved our wifi name to the computer so it is registered as our home network- but it still will not work fast or stay connected for long periods of time. Is there a setting I need to change, or anything I can do? Very disappointed with how the Mac works with our wifi.

Mac's will have trouble connecting to WEP Encrpyted and/or "hidden" / "invisible " networks.
OpenWEP (insecure) or WPA2(AES) is the only secure standard.
    ..WiFi, Internet problems, possible solutions
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots
Also make sure the date and time are current and updating to Apple's servers for your location in System Preferneces > Date and Time. Then reboot and reconnect.
If your still having trouble after this, take both machines back to the store for a free evaluation.

  • Using Firefox on Windows 7, if I leave Firefox running but the computer not connected to the internet (while I leave the computer for a while), Firefox reconnects to the internet. How do I stop this?

If I leave my computer unattended, with Firefox running but the computer not connected to the internet (using a modem), Firefox (or the pages displayed on it) will reconnect with the internet. I have not allowed auto-reconnection. So how do I stop this?

    install new copy on os

  • IMac Can No Longer Connect to the Internet

My parents use a 2006 Intel Core Duo iMac (the 17", 1.83GHz model) running OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard). They typically connect to the internet using a wireless network set up using an Airport Extreme with RCN as their ISP.
As of yesterday, the computer can no longer connect to the internet, while all other computers in the house, both Mac and PC, still can. I've tried power cycling the modem and the router, connecting using ethernet, and connecting the computer directly into the modem. Thus far, none of these attempts have succeeded. I've taken a look at the network settings for the computer and while networking is most certainly my thing I wasn't able to detect a change. As a last ditch attempt I tried using Google's public DNS service, rather than RCN's default, but that made no difference, so I've reverted it.
I realize that the information available in this thread is almost certainly too little to guess at what the problem might be, but I'm more than happy to fetch information that might be helpful in finding a solution.
Thanks for taking the time to read the problem; hopefully there's an obvious solution.

JJ247 wrote:  I typically say a restore would correct any software issues but your drive is dead.
"Drive is dead????" what in this thread gives you that idea? What card might be failing?
Agent: do you have any Input Managers (might be called Input Methods) either in the Home Folder/Library or in the HD/Library (not /System/Library.)
Yes, do try another Account and test for this there.
I know you've already tried Google DNS, but try OpenDNS
You don't need to go to the OpenDNS site to use OpenDNS. Simply open Network>Advanced>DNS in Sys Prefs and enter the following numbers for the interface you use, e.g. Airport or Ethernet,
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Hit OK and then Apply. Make sure those numbers are entered above any others you may have there.

  • VPN Connected Users cannot connect to the internet or send email

I just upgraded to Xserve G5 Dual 2.3 GHz 2GB SDRAM and a 3.5 TB Xserve RAID Running OSX Server 10.4.7.
Used to run G5 Tower running OSX Server 10.3.9.
    Running as a Standalone Server.
Everything seems to be running smoothly other that the fact that users connecting through VPN can no longer connect to the internet while connected through VPN nor can they send email. (I assume it's the same issue).
Wondering if password type is the issue. In 10.3.9 Workgroup Manager User password types were Open Directory for my vpn users. Previous Server was Standalone Server with Open Directory running, but not setup (weird I know.) 10.4.7, Open Directory for password is not an option... only shadowed password.
Not running any Open Directory services other than Lookup Server: Running and NetInfo Server: Local Only.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unless otherwise informed, a connecting client will send ALL traffic via the vpn. Ideally you only want to route traffic applicable to the VPN and for any other traffic (browsing and external email) to go via your local 'normal' router. You can configure the VPN server to inform connecting clients about applicable VPN traffic...
Example: the network you are vpn'ing into is 192.168.0.0/24
In Client Information-> Network Routing Definition, add 2 routes:
    Address: 192.168.0.0
    Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Type: Private
    Address: 0.0.0.0
    Mask: 0.0.0.0
    Type: Public
A connecting client will incorporate this routing information when connecting and thereafter send all traffic for the 192 network through the VPN (private) but send all other traffic (the catchall 0.0.0.0) to their local default router (public). Make sure you have them in that order (catchall at bottom).

  • Some Apps won't connect to the internet

    Dear All:
I am having some strange behavior. Some of my Apps will not connect to the internet, while others have no problem. Sometimes this happens for a few days and then things are all right, and then it starts again.
Today, for example, the Google Mail App, says that it can't connect to the internet and to retry. Retrying doesn't help. I removed and reinstalled the App and it didn't help.
If I go to gmail.com on Safari, I have no problem.
There are other Apps like this, that won't work from the desktop, but do work from Safari.
So I assume that there is some different way Safari and Apps go to the internet. I have no firewalls on my modem.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate hearing.
    Thank you.

    Try resetting your network settings.

  • Parallels won't connect to the internet

Every few days I have the same problem with connecting to the internet while I'm using windows via parallels..
The internet works fine if I'm running it regularly but windows is not connected at all.
This usually doesn't last for very long but it is a recurring problem and is quite annoying.
Whenever I try to open Windows Explorer, for example, it says it cannot display the webpage and when i go through troubleshooting it
suggests there may be a problem with the DNS server.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.
