Connecting to WiFi Campus Backbone

Hi,
I work for a Container Port operator. I am working on a project to remotely monitor about 70 large cranes in the terminal.
Each crane (Quay or RTG) has a LAN on board that connects the PLCs, GPS, Local Computers etc. We also have Terminal wide 802.11b/g Wireless backbone available.
We want to connect each of the cranes to the campus network using a small router in each crane with the following requirement.
1. The device needs to have Ethernet Ports to connect to the LAN switch in the crane.
2. It needs 802.11b/g wireless interface to connect to the Campus backbone.
3. It needs to support WPA security.
4. Provision to connect an external outdoor long range wireless antenna to reduce interfarence of the large electro Mechanical equipments of the Crane.
5. Routing capibility, as we need to connect 2 completely different subnets (Crane LAN and WLAN backbone) and we want to hide the complexities of the Crane network with its PLC etc. from the larger port network.
6. Last but not the least it needs to have a configurable and central management capibility.
I was looking at Cisco871/851 and a few other products. But, all seems to be intended to connect to a wired backbone and provide access primaryily via wireless. Our requirement is reverse, connect to the backbone using wireless and provide wired access to the crane LAN.
Has anyone done similar setup ? Can you suggest a device/product ?

  • My data usage on my Iphone 4s has skyrocketed in the last month, although I am connected to wifi 90% of my day.

From August 8th to September 7th I used 1211mb of my 5GB plan on Telus. I recently moved to another city to go to University and suddenly my data has rose to 5050mb used in less than a month. I would chalk it up to moving to the new city, except for the fact that I spend most of my day either at home where I have constant wifi or at the University which has free wifi across the campus. The only time I'm really on 3g at all is the 30 minute bus ride to and from school where I will often stream podcasts off of the podcast app and ocasionally use the alienblue app to browse reddit.
When looking at the hour by hour rate on my data plan I can see that in the span of driving to school on the bus I would use on some days 60mb and on others over 200mb in an hour period. I am almost always just listening to podcasts directly off of the podcast app during this time and I can't imagine they would take up that much data.
Strangely enough the highest amount of data spent most commonly is from around 9am-10pm, which is when I am in class no using my phone at all and should be connected to wifi. Apps running in the background wouldn't take up this amount of data would they? Do I revert to 3g from wifi everytime I lock my phone?
I've contacted telus and the technical support had no idea how it could change so drastically especially because it doesn't seem to follow any set pattern, he thought the phone could have a virus which I found not very likely.
On some days it says I've used almost a GB of data in a 4 hour period!
Does anyone have any ideas of what could have caused this sudden jump in data usage? Does streaming take up that much? Would apps running in the background add up to almost a GB in several hours? I'm utterly confused, because I can see no logical way that I'm using as much as they are saying.
I've also downloaded an app to track the amount of data I use on wifi and on 3g which also shows me WHERE I've used what data, which should help me pinpoint where something is going on.
Any opionions or help would be greatly appreciated, if you have any other questions let me know and I can answer to the best of my abilities.
    Thanks!

    *Update*
I thought I had found the offending 'app' namely "Songpop."
I regularly use "Songpop" on my phone late at night via my wifi connection.
All enteries on my phonebill are at midnight (even though I have a data allowance it was excluded from allowance). I switched 3G off on Friday, played "Songpop" at midnight and at the exact time I got a "Server Error" message.
I posted a message on the "Songpop" support forum. At first they said this was a problem relating to my ISP.
I have spoken to my ISP and asked if there are connection drops at the time I have been billed (ie to establish if my wifi dropped and 3G kicked in without my knowledge) and have been advised that there aren't any connection drops at that time.
"Songpop" have now responded that "This is an issue to take up with Apple Support"  see: http://support.songpop.fm/songpop/topics/playing_songpop_on_phone_via_wifi_but_i ncurring_download_data_charges_for_3g_useage?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=e mail&utm_source=reply_notification
Hopefully someone at Apple can respond ....

  • Unable to connect to wifi 8520

    Hi,
I bought a 8520 in the first week of Jan 2010 and trying to connect to wifi available on the college campus. The secured wifi is giving some problems which even the IT dept of our college is unable to solve.
We use PEAP security setting for the network and even after punching all the required settings I am unable to connect and its giving authorization error.
My default browser is also set to Hotspot.
The other issue which I am facing is that my BB restarts automatically in its own. This is very weird as there is sufficient battery and even then it gets switched off and starts on its own.
    Please help!!!

Lots of WIFI needs a username and password to get access. I guess you're lucky and yours is set up unsecured.
Normal secured WiFi requires only a password to get access. The password is used to encrypt traffic between your device and the WiFi access point. If whatever you are using requires a username as well then it is not simply normal secured WiFi. It might be a subscription WiFi service like GOGO, ATT, etc., or a service with authentication, i.e., college campus, etc. To help you out we need to know what you are using and what connection dialog you are being presented with. You don't have exactly the same problem as the original poster. He is having a problem entering a password into the password dialog that iOS presents when one tries to connect to a normal secured WiFi network. Could you clarify exactly which WiFi service you are using.

  • My computer says I am connected to wifi, but when I go to use the internet, I am not connected. What do I do?

I have tried to reset my wifi and use different wifi systems. I am in college, so I have tried to use the internet both on campus and in my home in Dallas, neither of which worked. I JUST WANT TO HAVE INTERNET.

My computer says I am connected to wifi, but when I go to use the Internet, I am not connected.
Usually when this occurs on one Wifi and Internet connection, the wifi router is working, but the router connection to the Internet Service Provider is broken. Resetting the modem or router/modem combination often results in a new connection to the ISP being established (baring any data caps limits, line, modem or ISP troubles)
However your mentioning it's not connecting anywhere your going on wifi or Internet, which could mean your machine has been compromised and possibly blacklisted until it's cleaned up of malware, or you tried to self solve your earlier issues and messed up your Network settings.
I tend to lesser think it's a actual hardware problem, but it might come to that eventually.
You should test the compromised/blacklist theroy by using a Ethernet cable to the modem you know has a good Internet on and powering on/off the modem. (if a router/modem combination, then no need). If you get Internet and not kicked off in a few minutes, then your machine is fine, likely messed up Network settings are too blame.
You can clear everything out by creating a New Location by editing locations and creating a new one, also by going to Airport Advanced > Airport and deleting all the previous connections to start over new. Reboot.
Connect manually to your home network and save in Keychain when it asks.
If this is all too much for you, take it to a local PC/Mac repair shop as they specialize in software/network issues.

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen No Longer Connects to WiFi

Tonight I've been watching videos via the new Youtube app (from the appstore, since the one that comes with iPod is no longer available). I was watching a Youtube video when the battery on my iPod touch ran out. I connected the charger, the iPod turned on, and it suddenly won't connect to my WiFi anymore. I have other devices that connect to the WiFi with no issues. What happens is I go to my WiFi settings, and select my router as the access point, and a rotating loading icon appears next to my access point's name, 'belkin54g'. But the loading icon never goes away, and as a result doesn't connect to WiFi. I recently upgraded to iOS 6 if that helps. This WiFi connection has always worked fine on this iPod touch, so I have no idea as to why it decided to crap out on me.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

Can not get my Sungale Tablet to connect to wifi.

You need to get your wireless settings first. Get the SSID (wireless network name) and security key (password) for your network. Are you using a Linksys router? Follow these instructions to retrieve your wireless network's info: Checking the Linksys router’s wireless settings. Then on your tablet, go to Wifi under Settings. Select your network and type in the password. If your tablet is an Android, here's how: Connecting your Android™ tablet to your wireless network.

  • How do i connect to wifi with ipad?

I just recieved my ipad 2. i cannot connect to wifi...help?

Ok so I have been battling with the same issue for a while now and have finally managed to crack it.
I have a Huawei 3G router that has been working for my PC;s and iPhone for a few years now. I then bought an iPad3 (3G and Wifi) and could just not connect it to the wifi network.
Fortunately I have a spare Linksys router (WRT320N) which has a setting to change the Wireless band from 2.4GHz to 5Ghz with 20/40MHz pipe. After changing this no problem iPad could connect.
So now I have 2 wireless networks running with internet connectivity only on the 3G so I plugged a lan cable from the 3G router into the internet port on the Linksys, set the Linksys up with a static internet connection and now I can access the internet via this method on the iPad.
Funny thing is, my iPhone cannot connect to the Linksys my laptop can however. Anyway so now I connect the iPad via the Linksys router and the iPhone via the 3G router.
I think Apple have pretty much messed up with the wireless bands on their products.......it would appear that they don't understand ? If they did they would make it pretty clear and from my efforts to try and sort this out i see there are many people out there, like me, who are laymen and there is no where that this is explained properly.
Most of the installed base of wireless routers I would think are on the 2.5GHz band, I say this beacause there are virtually NO wifi networks out there that I can connect to.
This is a huge frustration and a pretty poor reflection on Apple. So much for MOBILITY!!!!!

  • Using Remote app on iPhone 5 without a separate internet connection and wifi router.

    Hi,
I need to be able to control iTunes within my MacBook Pro remotely. Using my mobile broadband service and wireless router I've been able to get the Remote app to allow my iPhone 5 to do the job nicely through Home Share.  So I went and bought a separate WiFi router and tried to do the same thing. Of course when it didn't work, I discovered that I need an internet connection and WiFi network to make the Home Sharing work.
So I got to thinking, can I create a WiFi hotspot using the Personal HotSpot functionality of my iPhone, set up Home Sharing on phone and MacBookPro and then use the Remote app. Ideally this would work as it seems all the key components are in place.
The MacBook Pro accepts the iPhone hotspot as a means of Home Sharing, however the iPhone won't use the personal hotspot to Home Share and I can't connect to the iPhone personal hotspot on the iPhone itself.
Does anyone know how to make this work for me? It would be such as neat solution if I can get it to work - not to mention the potential to save me about $200 (I need to set this model up for two people).
    Cheers
    Kathy

Same trouble here, iPad 2 with latest OS and remote app, iPod with latest OS and app.

  • Why am I being charged for data when connected to wifi AND not using my phone?!

WHY am I being charged for data that I'm not using? At times when I'm asleep AND my phone is connected to wifi?!  This happens at really specific, alternating times like 9:54 pm every day, or 12:01 am, 6:01 am and then 12:01pm and 6:01pm. When I called I was told  "maybe your wifi at home is disconnecting" or "maybe your phone is connecting to atnt or sprint". It's not possible that my phone is disconnecting from wifi every six hours on the dot and, at that exact time, I'm always using data. I find it hard to believe that I live in a HUGE city and my phone magically connects to other networks and I NEVER notice this. Verizon is full of LIARS (and maybe’s) and I'm not convinced that these data charges are a coincidence. I was told to turn off my cellular data to see if the problem resolves itself. Why should I alter my daily life when Verizon is clearly the one with the issue? I hope there's a class action lawsuit because Verizon is trying to get over on everyone! I need answers!

        Hello NotHappy101,
I think it's quite odd that your data usage is at very specific times. We can certainly take a closer look. Please reply to my Direct Message, so we can get some additional details.

  • Connected to wifi but at midnight I am charged for "mobile data" on 3G (iPhone 4s)

I am on the Vodafone network and housebound. My iPhone 4s is connected to internet via wifi.
I have been incurring huge charges from Vodafone as a result of "mobile data downloads" ...which always occur at midnight when I am connected by wifi
I have had my phone looked at in a Vodafone store and they indicate that there doesn't appear to be any untoward apps on my phone.
I suspected the culprit to be the "Songpop" app and posted a message on their forum.
"Songpop" said this was a problem with my ISP but this has been ruled out as there aren't any drops in internet connection from by my ISP (they have looked at connection logs).
The official response from "Songpop" on their forum is that this an "Apple Support" issue. See here: http://support.songpop.fm/songpop/topics/playing_songpop_on_phone_via_wifi_but_i ncurring_download_data_charges_for_3g_useage?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=e mail&utm_source=reply_notification
Can anyone throw any light on this issue  as I have a very expensive bill to pay from Vodafone and I have not downloaded anything to my phone by 3G ...  and I rarely use 3G when away from home ... and if I do use away from home then I do not stream videos etc.
    Please help

Without looking at specific parts of your issue, here's how to turn cellular access off completely but keep your WiFi active:
Go to Settings > Airplane Mode and turn it on.
After doing that, go to Settings > WiFi and turn that on.
Then you will have WiFi and no cellular access.

  • E72 unable to connect to WIFI or GPRS after firmwa...

I hope someone here can help with my problem. My E72 cannot connect to WIFI or GPRS after I got a firmware update. Whenever I try to connect, I get error messages like "Connection not available" or "Web: Unable to perform operation". My software version is 054.005 for RM-530. I have tried reinstalling the firmware update thru Ovi suite, but it did not help. Also tried *#7370# and the phone still won't connect.
    Solved!

Try with Hard Reset (shift+space+backspace+on/off). Make a full backup before!

No, it is not a known issue. It is a known non-issue. Try resetting your IMAP login ID and password. Both the incoming and outgoing. If that fails delete the account reboot the phone, and add it back.
