Connecting to Windows network--alias problems

I can see all the connected PCs and servers, but when I click on the icon, I enter my user name and password, and then get the message that the original Alias cannot be found. Any ideas how to get onnected?

No that is your external IP address.
You need to use the internal IP addresses as assigned by your router.
On the PC
Start -> Run -> cmd
type
ipconfig
This will display the PC's internal network IP address
On the Mac
System Preferences > Network > "Network Interface you are using" > TCP/IP

Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network.
My Mac runs lion and the windows desktop runs Windows XP
I have tried for a few hours or so to connect my mac to this printer over a home network.
For your information it does work when connected directly to my mac using a USB Cable.
If there is no soultion could I have help getting the drivers for a Dell All-in-One Photo 926

In most cases you can connect to the Windows shared printer from the Mac. But there is a dependence on the Mac driver being compatible. For many consumer inkjets, the vendor created driver cannot be used for this type of connection so you need to look at alternative drivers, such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. If you can tell us which brand and model of printer you have shared from Windows then we can answer your question with the preferred procedure on the Mac.

  • Sporadic problems connecting to Windows Network

I'm one of two Mac persons on a Windows network here at work. The problem is that we often can't connect to the server/network. It's a Windows 2003 Server, and we're both running on Tiger.
What puzzles me is that we sometimes can log on to the network, and sometimes not.
Is there any explanation (or preferably a solution).
    Thanks in advance!
    Message was edited by: Snuf

IT should know this from their Logs, but if you have access to the Server, check it's time & the Macs' times when you can't connect.
For the other problem, might try to use one of these lines in terminal...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en0 down;sudo ifconfig en0 up
Use en0 if Ethernet, en1 if Airport, in both places in either line.

  • Connection to Windows Network Shares

After installing 10.5 I lost my automatic (Active Directory Domain mapping upon logon) and manual connection to some of our critical Windows network shares. All worked fine under 10.4. All connection attempts fail and report in a dialog:
    Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address and try again.
Manual connections then report in a dialog:
    Connecting to Server
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in
"cifs://netstore2.colgate.edu/student6" could not be read or written.
    (Error code -36)
Some of our servers connect fine but two of our most important servers do not. I haven't found a clear description of this in Apple support forums (but may have missed it in the flood of problems reported).
I have something that works for me based on something I read on the web (perhaps in one of the threads on http://www.macwindows.com/leopard.html but I can't find it now).
Our automatic mappings and my initial manual attempts use the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for our server - netstore1.colgate.edu. Replacing this with netstore1 works! I have no idea why (Something to do with WINS? Apple engineers?) but I'm using it for myself and others.
    That is:
    cifs://netstore1.colgate.edu/employee2/dwheeler fails (as does smb://...)
    while
    cifs://netstore1/employee2/dwheeler works (as does smb://...)
I just duplicated this failure/success using mount_smbfs, where the failure looks like:
    $ mount_smbfs //[email protected]/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
mount_smbfs: server connection failed: Software caused connection abort
    and
    $ mount_smbfs //dwheeler@netstore1/employee2/wheelerda ~/temp
    simply works.
Hopefully this will help someone while Apple fixes the problem (they can probably blame Microsoft, but remember that this all worked fine in 10.4).

    Please make the following changes
On the Server whose map drives you don't see
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
    Value: autodisconnect
    Data type : REG_DWORD
    Value: ffff (Hex)
    On windows 7 client
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters
    Value Name: KeepConn
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 65535 (dec value in seconds)

  • ISight - connects with windows users no problem?

I'd like to buy this webcam, but I heard it has problems connecting with windows users. Will I be able to talk to people on it through AIM? Thats what I'd like, if not, I probably wont get it. Anyone have any personal experience or have any answers or helpful tips - I'd appreciate anything - thanks.

It is not the iSight itself that gives you the impression that connecting with Micros~1 Windows users causes problems ... it is the availability of (cross platform) applications that makes connecting a bit more cumbersome.
I have PowerMac G5 with iSight and I connect with my Micros~1 Windows platform family equiped with and without USB webcam.
The challenge will be to find messaging / VoiP applications with bearable audio quality and reasonable video performance.
I started with Skype for Voice and Yahoo! messenger for bad video ( 1-2 fps and video size 320 x 240).
Skype has a video plugin (only for Windows)
Yahoo! Messenger does not have voice yet (2.5.3)
MSN is badmouthing because of the "M"
I have used iChat with another Apple believer ... and the quality of Voice and Video is unparralled.
The best two alternatives I found are:
    a) AIM 5.9
    b) Trillian (www.trillian.cc)
Both use a free AIM screen name.
AIM works fine, see also EZJim pages.
TrillianPro 3.1 reuses AIM screen names ... and ... it has both good audio and zoom-to-full-screen-video size with fps rates filling your bandwidth.
The only negative on Trillian so far, the "handshake" for connecting two people takes some time.
TrillianBase is free but has no Video capabilities. The Pro version is 25$.

ps. if you want to test your setup use my AIM screenname: coenjeukens

  • How to connect to windows network

Is there a way to connect your iPad and/or iPhone 5 to a Windows network?  If so how?

    Hi, Charlie -
I'm not insulted at all! I appreciate the dialog.
Here's what I can tell you. I checked the airport utility and it indicates specifically that the Airport Express is being used to "Extend a wireless network." It's not connected to the Airport Extreme by any cable.
Given the difference in indicated signal strength on my MacBook Air (I'm using it now and it's 3 feet away from the Mac Pro), I've got full strength on the Air but when I try to connect the Windows machine it indicates only 1 bar/unit of strength. I'm guessing that it's not seeing the Express (extended) but only the Extreme that's much farther away. I'm in the basement at one end of the house and the Extreme is on the second floor at the other end of the house. When I boot the Mac Pro to OS X I'm able to join the extended network. Hmmmmm...

  • Can't connect to Windows network (ethernet)

im trying to connect my macbook to existing, enterprise Windows network. im not at all concerned w/ sharing files on my mac... but i would like to be able to:
    1) use the (ethernet-based) Windows network for internet (its DHCP-based)
    2) use the Windows network's printers
    3) access Windows network shared folders
    ...having trouble.
currently, im plugged in via ethernet (good cable) and "Connected".
however, when selecting "Using DHCP" it says:
"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to
    connect."
...my Windows co-workers use DHCP, but their addresses are in the
10.5.2.x range; whereas mine is a 169.x.x.x address. somebody told me that:
+"This is an address used to request an address from the DHCP (Dynamic+
+Host Configuration Protocol) server for your network. Seeing this+
+means for whatever reason you are not getting assigned an address+
+by that server. The first thing I'd try is asking your network+
+administrator about it. It could be the network access is restricted."+
...ive checked, and we are not restricted; our admin thought i should be able to get an IP address.
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    sm

If you are not getting an address via DHCP, and your mac is set up to accept DHCP on the Ethernet network line, then you are probably not physically connected to the network. Tell your admin to help you get a connection to his network.
Second, to access a Windows Active Directory domain, have your admin use the Directory Utility located in the Utilities area of Finder (this is in Leopard, not sure about earlier versions) have him bind you to his Active Directory domain. The domain name is his AD domain name, and the computer name is what he and you want to name your computer. The reason he/she has to do it is because you need a Windows/AD admin user ID and password to do it, just like you were doing this to any Windows machine.
This makes accessing Windows objects easier. Alas, Windows printing via AD seems to have been broken with the 2008-002 security update, but I have to think this will be addressed.

  • AE connected to Windows network

    Hi
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I have an AE connected via Ethernet to a Windows network. It seems something I am doing or not doing is causing their internet connection to fall over, it has happened 2/3 times in the last few days since I got connected. Is there some analysis I can do from my PB to find out what is happening or is there something the Windows network can tell us that points out the error. Thsi is a bit of a desparate situation because the network belongs to a company and they cannot have this happening all the time.
My AE is configured manually with IP addresses given out by their system administrator, I have configured the AE to distribute IP addresses for my PB via DHCP. Is there something the AE is telling the Windows system that it doesn't like. They have a serious firewall installed, whatever that means in Windows systems.
    Thank you

Since you are connected to a network that already has a DHCP server, Distribute DHCP on the AX should be DISABLED.

  • Connecting to windows networks from a mac

I have a G5 with airport card installed which is connected via ethernet to an airport express, and there are several wireless networks provided by my school nearby which I am unable to connect to through either my card or the express. Meanwhile, my friend has a windows laptop (which I'm typing on now) that is able to access these networks correctly, and detects them automatically. Is there any way I can configure my G5 to connect to these? I've tried connecting to the networks in question manually (there's no password), but am unable to do so, as it gives me a generic error 'there was an error joining the Airport network "<network name>".' Is there a specific configuration issue that's preventing me from accessing the networks, or are they only accessable from Windows computers?

The cable connects my computer to my airport express, which I've used in the past to extend my range (especially at home). However, even with the cable disconnected and the express unplugged I am still unable to connect to the school network. Any other thoughts?

  • Can't connect to wifi network - password problem?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro C2D 2.16, but I can't get it to connect via airport to my wifi network at home. When I use the network setup assistant, i'm prompted to enter the WPA password, but then i get a message saying "password invalid"? If I try connecting through the Internet Connect window, it says: "there was an error joining the airport network"?
After reading through the forums a bit, I tried changing the WPA password, changing to WEP, and even using the open setting, but my MBP still won't connect to my DSL router (Zoom X6 router). My other Windows laptop connects fine.
This is my first Mac, and I'm a bit clueless regarding networking as well, so any advice is appreciated. BTW, I've got OSX 10.4.8 installed.
    Macbook Pro 2.16 Mhz C2D Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I solved it! Well, not really - I just did a bit more searching on the forums and found someone else with the same problem - solution: Update the firmware's router, and now my MBP can connect properly, with WPA2.

Check the settings on your iPad for automatic downloads.....
Settings>Store>Automatic Downloads>Apps. If it is enabled, turn it off. The apps shouldn't download again as far as I know, but this is a good a place as any to start.

  • Cannot connect extender to network - possible problems??

I've tried placing it diff paces around the house and installing. Have tried installing with the CD and manually. What could possibly the problem? I can connect to signal but there's not internet cause it won't connect to the router. Does my router have to be linksys too?

Try to use the RE1000 as a wireless adapter. Connect your computer to the RE1000 and then access the RE1000's ui. Under wireless>> site survey tab, try to look for the available wireless network and check if the RE1000 will be able to detect the router.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • Can't Connect to Windows Network at the Office

Networking has never been my strong suite, so I have to come to them that knows!
My MacBook can't get access to the wireless network at work. I get full signal strength, but no connect. When I run the setup troubleshooter (forget the actual name at the moment--geez!), it displays "Searching" and I get the spinning ball and finally, "Not responding." The first 4 lights are green, butthe last 2 are yellow. I entered in the WEP pass, IP, all of that, but Nada. I know Macs can connect here, as my predecessor brought in her MacBook daily. If you need more info, just ask-- thanks for the help!

I agree with Julien, at this point in time most wireless environments should be at least using WPA if not WPA2. And if you really want secure, WPA2 Enterprise. But the fact that you cannot get on even via ethernet tells me that there may be a problem with DHCP. Is DHCP enabled? When you are in your net preferences are you getting anything? Or is Ethernet saying its connect but has no address? Or is it using an automatic IP, something starting with 169.x.x.x? Also be careful with copying your settings from your PC, if yo meant you were manually setting IP addresses and such, that will cause some problems.
As for your IT guy, well in this day and age, we (IT guys) will find it in our best interest to learn to play nice with multi-platform environments. Shoot I can do it and I've only been technically supporting macs for under a year I used to hate the **** things Now I own one and want a desktop for home. Though the wife isn't too fond of me dropping the coin for a Mac Pro hehe.

  • Connecting to windows network

I'm about to try to download Samba, but i have no clue how to get it started (I know I should probably try it before i ask questions, but hey, if theres anything I can break, tell me.)
First of all, is it available on pacman?
As a sidenote, how do you get "uninstall" packages?

If you need to access a linux samba share from a windows computer, you need to create a samba user with the same username and password as on the windows machine. And for that you also need a linux user with the same username. This user must have permission to read and/or write the directories on the linux machine that are to be shared.
The linux users password is not important if the user will only have access via the network to the shares, and should then be set to something really secure. (well, all passwords should be secure, but if noone needs to login, you can even make it one that is hard to remember)
After the linux user has been setup, use
    smbpasswd -a <username>
to add the samba user. And supply the password (equal to the windows password) when asked for it.
That should be it. Then you should be able to access the samba shares from the windows machine.
Let me know if I've misunderstood what you are trying to do, and I'll see what else we can work out.
EDIT: You must run the above command as root, else you won't have access to the smbuser database.
