Connecting to WPA personal

I setup a SMC WGBR14 to use WPA(personal) encryption. Somehow, it seems I've created a keychain with the wrong password, but I can't locate it in the keychain application. I can find the login for my old wireless router, but not the new one.
Thinking I had incorrectly setup the wireless portion of the router, I reset the router to default factory settings. While I could "see" the router thru Internet Connect, each time I select the router the connection fails and a msg appears that the connection failed (or some such).
I have setup a preferred network in Preferences/Network for the new network using the WPA log-in code.
The router is setup to use mixed modes (n, g & b).
The puzzling issue is I successfully setup an Aluminum PB 1.67mHz and it connects to the SMC router without a problem.

I deleted:
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.000a9567 6db0.plist
as well as:
com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a958f7bd2.plist
com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a95676db0.plist
com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000393c81662.plist
I am on my Third network name. I have tried default network name with no wireless protection.
I have used the Other option and when I did that, tagging the network as WPA(personal) I received a msg:
The wireless network "blah-blah" does not support the requested encryption method.<<</div>
Well, that's not right because another computer is using the setup router name, encryption method and password.
I'm stuck!!!

  • PowerBook G4 can't connect to WPA Personal network?

    Hi all,
I recently set up a wireless network in my apartment building. The router isn't AirPort (I know, but as soon as I have the money!). However, four of us (myself included) can get on the wireless network with no problem...that's two MacBooks on 10.4, and two PC laptops.
The fifth computer is the problem. Somewhere I read that 10.2 doesn't support WPA Personal networks, so I upgraded his computer to 10.4. Still, no dice on connecting to our wireless net.
    Here are his AirPort specs:
    Wireless Card Type: AirPort
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 9.52
Is this the wrong firmware version? Where would I find the right one (browsing through the downloads, I could only find firmware updates for the base stations)? I've run all the OS updates and the one Airport update that appeared in the regular Software Updates screen.
Help! Any ideas? Should I give up on WPA Personal?

Oh geez, I can't even post to the right forum. Apologies!

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • WPA Personal - The second laptop won't connect

I have purchased the wireless router WRT54G. I have managed to configure the internet properly, and as well managed to connect wireless with the laptop through which I have made the setup.
If I disable the Wireless Security I can easily connect also the other laptop I have in the house. But when I set the Wireless Security to WPA Personal then I can only connect with the laptop through which I have runned the setup for the router.
I would appreciate any help please. Thanks.

Hi, have you checked if your wireless network functions if you enable WEP encryprion ? check that out.. Also since this is specific to security , check what is the current firmware your router is using ...upgrade if necessary

I am attempting to join a new wireless network. I know I have the network name and password correct. I click on the airport icon, select the network, and type in the password. The problem is, the "OK" button never changes from grey (i.e. I cannot click it). The wireless security type is WPA personal.
    Argh, help! Thanks.

Hi musselshells, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Is this under the Airport icon>Join Other, in Network Prefs>Airport>Airport tab, or in Internet Connect?

  • IOS 5 can't connect to WPA/WPA2 Enterprise Wireless Network

After upgrading multiple iPhone 4 (CDMA versions) to IOS 5.0, I have not been able to get them to connect to our WPA/WPA2 Enterprise wirless network.  We use a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller.  The wireless network is capable of doing WPA or WPA2 Enterprise with PEAP.  These phones all connected to this network fine before the upgrade.
When connecteding to the network, it prompts me for the username and password and when I tap join it sits for about 10-15 seconds then says "Unable to join the network" with a Dismiss button.
It connects to non-Enterprise networks just fine.  I have tested it on WPA Personal and WPA2 Personal networks and it has worked on several without issue.
I have tried "forget this network" with no success.
Is anyone else having this problem?  I know of at least three Verizon iPhone 4's that have this exact same problem.  I haven't seen one working with this configuration yet.

    I have the same problem:
    Cisco WLC's -> WPA2 Enterprise AES + EAP-PEAP 802.1x with CCKM
Pre 5.0 - all worked fine
Post 5.0 - it tries to connect and after few moments i get error - couldn't connect.

  • Security Mode option: "Capture (wlansec. wpapersharekey) WPA Personal" ?

Hi, I'm trying to support my father remotely and was reviewing his security setup over the phone, making sure everything was still okay. He has the wrt54g (I think v5 and I don't know the firmware version) - and in Wireless> Wireless Security> Security Mode he has "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" selected. When I set this up 6 months ago, I don't recall if I selected that and thought the docs were misprinted - or what.
I didn't bother to have my father tell me what the other choices were as I was perplexed and thought that since it says "WPA Personal" everything is normal (and since wireless connectivity works, it seems he is, in fact, using WPA). But is this setting normal? I cannnot find out any information about this setting in the docs, on this forum, google, etc. Even linksys phone support did not know. All documentation says to select "WPA Personal". Is this the same thing? Is what I'm seeing a setting in the older firmware maybe? Note - we have not upgraded firmware since the router was bought 6 months ago (lazyness).
    The client is a mac.
    Thanks
    Nancy C.

it is really normal for your router's interface to display that script of "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" when you are viewing that on a MAC computer.. but on the windows  (xp, 2k, ME, 98, 95, etc), it'll disaplay the normal script...

  • PBG4 Linksys WRT54G WPA Personal

Before I sent in my PB G4 in for repairs (DC In Board) I had my Linksys setup with WPA Personal with tkip. I had requested that they test the Airport since it lost signal to the router twice in one day, don't know if they performed it as it didn't say in the work order that I received with my PB. When I got my PB back I could only get a signal with the security setting disabled, BTW I have SSID disabled. Whenever I try enabling WPA Personal I lose the signal to the router. While my PB was being repaired, I upgraded the router's firmware using my father's PC that is connected to the router. How can I enable WPA without losing signal to the router? I am not tech oriented, so please keep your suggestions simple for me to understand. Thank you in advance.

I have read all the problems with Linksys and PB/Airport connections problems. I had the same problem with THREE different Linksys Wireless routers with my PB. I thought for the price, where could I go wrong. I could have gone with NetGear, but the very first Router I had from Netgear was not a good experience (support was awful, and the language barrier was difficult to get through). Anyway to make a long story short, all Linksys Routers I had, the throughput speed would just steadily drop on from 2400 k/bps to a turtle slow 18 k/bps. I called my ISP to resolve the issue, but they could only check modem status, which always checked good. So calling time after time to linksys did nothing more than frustrate me more and more, because the only answers I ever got was unplug everything, and replug everything, change MTU, etc. etc. And time after time, it was the same thing. So after the third one, I took it back, got my refund and used that money to invest in Airport Extreme. And wouldn't you know it? I have not had to reset it once since I have gotten it, and I have not lost any speed nor/neither reception. For the price/frustration ratio, the Airport Extreme is an exceptionally good buy. I have to much to do, rather than sit on the phone with unsupportable support techs at Linksys. My two cents worth. I know I may be just one of those small few that may could have gotten a bad router, but three?

  • Apple TV fails to connect to WPA-protected wireless network

Tried different settings and it always fails to connect. It does display a code of -3 ... does anybody know what that code means?
If I disable WPA in my wireless router, and remove the WPA key configuration from my Apple TV, than the connection succeeds and I have done that for brief periods of time but cannot keep it that way.
    Any insights?

BTW, my wireless router is configured for WPA Personal (no Radius), Pre-shared-key, TKIP (AES does not seem to be an option).

  • Airport Extreme unable to connect to WPA network

I have an iBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 and a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router. The iBook connects well with the Netgear router using WEP encryption but using WPA Personal security I get a message that says "the wireless network does not support the requested encryption method."
The netgear technical support people advised me that it is a configuration issue and to contact Apple to make it work properly but the only information I found there was to update the airport card firmware.
I updated the firmware for the AirPort Extreme card to 3.90.34.0p.16 from the Apple website but that didn't solve the problem.
In addition I have a HP Photosmart wireless all-in-one where I experience the same problem.
If there are any suggestions, I would be forever grateful.

    Don,
Thank you for your reply. The article on WEP encryption is very interesting and I will use it when I use WEP.
The article on WPA indicates that an airport extreme card with software version 3.2 or higher should work. I think I have version 4.2 which came from the AirPortSW42.dmg which I obtained from the Apple website. So I am confused because it still doesn't allow me to connect using WPA.

  • MacOSX 10.3.8 system with original Airport card can't connect via WPA/WPA2

    Hi all,
My WiFi network consists of an Airport Express running a WPA/WPA2 Personal network and 802.11b/g compatibility, upon which 3 Macs (all with Airport Extreme/G or /Draft-N cards) and 2 PCs (both G compatible) merrily connect to.
I have an old PowerMac G4 which I've just fitted with an original non-Extreme Airport card, and having updated MacOSX 10.3.8 with Airport 4.2 to enable WPA access, it still refuses to connect to the network; I get the "There was an error joining the Airport network ..." when the correct password is entered.
My understanding is that while the old Airport cards don't support WPA2, they do support WPA and thus if the Airport Express network is set to WPA/WPA2 and b/g compatibility (which I'm assuming is some kind of all encompassing compatibility mode, given there's also sole WPA2 options) then it shouldn't have any problems connecting to the network. What am I missing here?
    Cheers, Ben.

I am having the exact same problem. Powerbook G4; original factory installed airport card; with Panther 10.3.9 OS plus updated 4.2 Airport Admin. Utility. It will NOT connect to my Airport Express set to the WPA/WPA2, which is working fine with my iPod touch.
When I get to the screen requesting password for my chosen airport network ("Wireless Security: WPA Personal), the "OK" button is grayed out and it will not even let me submit a password to connect. Can somebody help?

  • WPA Personal vs. Enterprise?

    Hi,
    A couple of questions...
    1) what is the difference between WPA/WPA2 Personal vs. WPA/WPA2 Enterprise? When should I use Personal and when should I use Enterprise?
    2) I have my WRT54G configured to use WPA2 Personal currently. My laptop with Windows XP Pro and wireless-G card doesn't offer WPA2 as an encryption method from the wireless utility. However if I select WPA it works. How is that possible? Are WPA and WPA2 compatibile?
    thanks,
    David

    Sometimes encryption nomenclature is confusing.
WPA   = WPA with TKIP = PSK
    WPA2 = WPA with AES  = PSK2
When your router is set to "WPA2 with TKIP+AES" it means that network devices that can use WPA2 will connect with WPA2, and network devices that can only use WPA will connect with WPA.  The password for both WPA and WPA2 will be the same.  This option was added to allow users to easily transition from WPA to WPA2.  To set your router to use only WPA2, choose WPA2 with AES (do not use TKIP).
Also, it is very unlikely that your wireless g card cannot do WPA2.  It may be listed as "WPA with AES".  If you do not see WPA2 or "WPA with AES" as an option, then download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.  The updated driver should support WPA2.  Also note that in order to do WPA2, you will need to upgrade Windows XP to SP3.
Note that if all your wireless devices can do WPA2, you should set your router to do WPA2 with AES  (not with TKIP).  This will improve the security of your network by eliminating the use of WPA encryption.

  • Can't connect to WPA wireless network

Switched from WEP to WPA and now my PowerBook G4 refuses to connect. I'm prompted to type in my WPA Personal password and the little beach ball spins and then tells me:
There was an error joining the AirPort network "Napier 1532 Wireless"
    [Try again] [OK]
I'm trying to connect to an AirPort Express. Settings:
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
    Encryption Type: WPA and WPA2
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Airport Card Firmware 9.52

    Hello,
I too have had some steps to tread in order to get WPA2, from WEP.
My firmware version is: 405.1, yours reads: 9.52. A bit old for the new WPA.
You do not say if you have the airport express or the airport extreme? In the latter case Apple has updates on their website for it to get the WPA and WPA2. The airport express is more limited, but it works as part of my network with the airport extreme. (The express handles only the printer)
If you have password forgetfullness, you can reset the unit to original spec with the little button on it... you do have to know the original ID, which will be in the original box. I think all of Apple units are the same, so once you have that you can "rebuild" it again with the network assistant, with WPA2 and a Name and password you can remember. Also, make your changes thru the assistant or you may miss an item in the process and hang it up... which is what it sounds like happened. Then all other changes "Should" require your wifi password to bring up the network screen in order to make.
PS: I have got OSX to do things with part info, but I had to have it try 2 or 3 times before it figured out what I wanted it to do (a smart little program all in all). But it works much nicer with all the data it needs, and for a longer time without problems.

  • Power Mac G4 won't connect to WPA Enterprise

At the university that I work at we are updating our wireless network to use WPA Enterprise only, instead of WEP 802.1x and WPA Enterprise. The computer that I am having problems with is our test machine for writing connection documentation for the students, faculty, and staff. I can get the computer to access the network trough WEP 802.1x but not WPA Enterprise. The computer will start the connection process and then fail and not connect to the network.

First, make sure you have at least these versions of the Airport software:
107795- AirPort Card: When You Can Join a WPA Network
Then read this article about set-up, including WPA Enterprise:
107921- AirPort for Mac OS X 10.3 or later: Using different types of wireless security (WEP and WPA)
"For a school or business, WPA Enterprise can provide each user with unique credentials. WPA Enterprise uses the same security as WPA Personal, but with the added measure of individual usernames and passwords (WPA Personal uses a shared password). Each wireless base station communicates with a RADIUS server to authenticate the user's credentials."

  • Can't scan or connect to WPA network since kernel upgrade

    Hi guys,
I upgraded to kernel 2.6.29 earlier today and have been having trouble with scanning and connecting to WPA encrypted networks since. I'm stuck with a wired connection for the minute, but I can't have the wire going through the house for so long otherwise somebody will trip over it - probably me.

I've made some progress though - but still can't connect. I can now scan for a network though.
    /etc/conf.d/wireless-regdom

/var/run/wpa_supplicant still didn't exist, so I created a /var/run/wpa_supplicant folder - and saw a few success messages in the log. This allowed me to bring the card up again and scan for a network.
At this point, I was getting excited until netcfg2 still kept telling me that it couldn't associate with the network.
    I installed wicd and gave that a go and got the following. I did a 'tail -f /var/log/wicd/wicd.log' and got this;
