  • Connecting two macs using ethernet

    Hi All
am attempting to link my iMac and Mabook. I've done it before with a firewire cable, but have forgotten how to. Have tried varios combinations of password and user name, but can't get access to macbook from my imac. Am wanting to transfer photos from macbook to imace.
Saw a post about connecting using ethernet, but equally am not sure how to.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Robert

As Jolly Giant says you need to enable file sharing, though only on the mac you want to connect to. IE, if you want to connect to the MacBook from the iMac you'd enable sharing on the MacBook.
To connect by ethernet, simply plug one end of the cable into one mac and the other end into the other. If you connect to a wireless network using airport and your mac is set to use the airport before the ethernet (see system prefs> network> list at the side shows order) you may have to turn the airport off on one of the computers to ensure you're transferring files across the ethernet (rather than the wireless, which will be far slower).
Once you've connected the cable and turned sharing on the shared computer should show up in the sidebar of a Finder window. If it doesn't, check that Finder is set to show shared computers, in the menubar Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Tick Connected Servers & Bonjour Computers.
Clicking on the shared computer's icon in the sidebar should connect you as a guest, however at the top of the Finder pane there will be a black bar that says Connected As: you can then connect as yourself and you should be able to see everything on the other computer

  • How to fix the "Two computers using the same IP address" issue on the airport express

I just bought an airport express and got dsl at my apartment, and I haven't been able to set up the wireless connection. My DSL works just fine but whenever I hook up the AX I get an error message saying that there are two computers using the same IP address on the network, but I only have one computer.
I know this is probably a simple fix, but I've never had this issue when I set up the Extreme at my parents house and I haven't been able to find a thread on this.
As of right now I have it set to Factory settings.
    Help please!

This modem was designed to connect directly to a computer and you are trying to connect it to a router.
Unfortunately, this is not a simple fix as both the modem and your AirPort Express will need to be configured differently to work together correctly.
Connect the modem directly to your computer.
Open up your browser and type the default IP address for the modem into the address bar. Check your documentation on the modem but it is likely 192.168.1.254
That will bring up the configuration page for the modem.
You may need to enter the modem access code which is on a label on the back or bottom of the device
Look for an Advanced tab, then look for a tab labeled something like PPP Location
Right now, you will see that "PPP is on the modem"
Chance that to "PPP is on the computer or router"
Click to save your new settings and the modem will restart
If you ever need to get the modem back to its original settings, you will need to hold in the reset button on the back of the modem for 5-6 seconds and then enter in the default IP address to be able to access the settings on the modem
Connect the modem to the AirPort Express with an Ethernet cable
Open AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Continue to follow the guided setup to "Create a wireless network"
You may be asked to "switch" networks when you do this. You want to switch
Select the "Connect Using PPPoe" option when it appears
Enter your user name and password with your provider. Leave the Service Name area blank. You want to always stay connected if you see that option
Continue to follow the guided setup and Update to save settings
Pull the power cord from the modem, wait a moment, then restart the modem
Log on to the wireless network that you created during the setup and you should have an Internet connection

  • Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

But I'm telling you I tried using the IP address ... here, let me try again ...
I find this address on the machine I want to connect to: 169.254.177.122
I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?
    mbp:~ rjcarr$ ping powerbook.local
    PING powerbook.local (169.254.177.122): 56 data bytes
Weird. It isn't that big of a deal ... I just like to know what is going on.

  • Cannot connect two computers to the same game server HELP!

I have a Linksys WRT54G Router.  I have two computers and I want to be able to use them on the same gaming server.  Unfortunately, the game only have one port, so I can only port forward one of my computers.  How can I configure my router to have two external IP addresses to the server so it won't kick one of my computers out.  Thanks!

    Hi,
I am in a gaming community and many members have a Linksys at home (but I don't know which kind exactly). Many of us try to connect two computers to the same server (many have a family). It seems it is a common problem that no one can connect two computers to the same game server.
    I have a BEFSR41 V3 Firmware version 1.04.8
I use fixed IP address and no connectivity problem on Internet.
I have win XP SP2 on both computer.
I am using a DSL modem
I can connect the two computers to two different game servers at same time, but not the same server. Default port for this game is the same for all servers I use. I tried with both port forwarding enabled (in that case one PCs can connect the other not) or not (in the second case, whenever the second PC connects, the first one lose his connection to the server, no mater the order I try to connect my PCs).
Now the weird thing is that one member in my community just decided to throw away his Linksys router and he bought another brand (which I won't name to remains politically correct). Now, without changing anything in his PCs or his connection type, he can now play with two PC on the same server.
I am seriously thinking doing the same move. Since more and more game are now using Internet (and servers that controls piracy, $$) and family want to play together, not being able to connect two PCs on the same game server makes Linksys in bad situation from marketing point of view.
For example, in my gaming communtity, we now all know that Linksys can't handle two PC on same server, but other brand can...
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Can I connect two computers to one device?

Can I connect two computers to one device? I am trying to have them control different aspects of the experiment that I'm running.

That depends upon the device. If it's GPIB, you could
use the E-NET card to convert it to LAN. That would
allow control by many computers. The only problem with
that might be sychronization. That is, Computer 1 does
its setup. Then Computer 2 does a reset. Compuer 1's
    setup is now gone.
As another poster suggested, you could always network
    between the two computers.

  • Can two computers use same iTunes library on a network drive?

Can two computers use directly (rather than share) the same iTunes library on a network drive?
My media library is on a network drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Right now I share the library with my desktop Mac. I can share fine, but I would like to be able to add, delete, and make other changes in the media library from both computers. The two computers would not be accessing the library at the same time as I am the sole user of both.

I appreciate your input and I think you're right about this being impossible. But just to clarify, you say I can't "have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location." I can have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location--I just can't have them accessing the same music files simultaneously--which may have been what you meant. For my situation, I think it will be less work to just quit iTunes on my server when I want to run it on my client (using Chicken of the VNC). It's not ideal, but it's less time-consuming than periodically syncing three computers.
    Again, thanks for the input.

  • Connecting Two PC using internet connection ??

    Hi,
I want to develop one software so that I can connect two PC using internet connection means one is host and another is remote. So that I can access remote PC's Hard drive using internet connction. Can any one plz give me some guideline how I can start.Eagerly waiting for someone reply.
    Thanks & Regards

This is not what you have in mind, but it will work.
Create a server that listens for connections from a client. Create a list of commands that can be issued by client to view information. Such a list in your case would be similar to the following:
    Open
    ChageDir
    Rename
    CreateDir
    DeleteDir
    ListDir
Next, you need to implement the processes that will actually do the command on the remote computer. When the client issues the "ListDir" command, then adds a line (the path of the directory to list) the server should then do this (vary simple, but you get the idea):
    File file = new File(theDirectory);
    if (file.isDirectory()) {
    String[] list = file.list();
    socketOutputStream.println("Directory " + theDirectory);
    for (int i=0; i<list.length;i++) {
    socketOutputStream.println(list);
    socketOutputStream.flush();
So, you should get the idea from this. For each command, have a method to handle the actual work on the server-side, then have the server send the resulting data back to the client for display. Notice how much this looks like DOS. It's the same idea - a command line interface (called a CLI).

  • Between any two computers, using hashCode() will get same digit?

between any two computers, using hashCode() will get same digit?

For the same object on the same machine running in the same JVM, hashcode is required to return the same integer primitive if the object is to be successfully manipulated in containers.
    All other bets are off.

  • How do i share files between two computers using the ethernet?

i have bought a cord that is ethernet to ethernet. i do not understand how or where to go after the two computers are seemingly connected. i have a bunch of photos on iphoto id like to transfer. thank you.

Out of curiosity do you already have a home network? If so do both computers connect to the network? In this case just use File Sharing which is enabled in the Sharing preferences.

  • Connecting two computers, wirelessly, using Airport?

I have a IMac intel and a PowerBook G4 - 400 Ti. They both have Airport cards. I understand that they will "talk" to each other with out benefit of a router. I would like to know how I can set this up. I have gone through the setup procedures endlessly and, although I did manage to get the IMac to see the PB once, and I don't know how it happened, I have not been able to do it again. There was an icon on my IMac desktop that I could drag stuff to and it would transfer. I'm quite confident its a simple procedure that I, in my stupidity, cannot fathom. When I try to set up a network I get an error message saying : "There was an error joining the Airport Network". Could it be a "slave/master" relationship between the two computers? With a proper setup will the flow of info be two way or one way? Are the two computers or systems incompatible? You help will be deeply appreciated!

To my knowledge the information you heard is not
    correct.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/
    en/mh914.html
Any computer that has an Airport Card, or Wireless
Card (PC) will recognise any network that they are in
range of by and with the use of a ROUTER, thus
    completeing the 2 way communication.
There are several different ways to connect and
confiqure a network, these different ways can be and
can get confusing without the paperwork on the step
    by step set-up.

Actually none of the Airport cards require a Wireless base station (acting as a router/access point) to work. Airport supports ad-hoc wireless mode (computer-to-computer mode, in Apple lingo), which allows two or more wireless-enabled computers to be connected to each other WITHOUT the use of base station. Search for "computer-to-computer" in the support knowledge base.

  • How do I share files between two Macs using ethernet?

I have two Macs, both running OS X 10.4.11. How can I connect them using ethernet in order to transfer files back and forth?
    Pete

I have an ethernet hub with both computers connected to it. You may be able to just connect the two computers with a cable, but it might have to be a "Crossover cable"
Go to your system preferences>>Sharing and turn of file sharing for each or both computers.
Then go to the Finder>>Go>>Network and the other computer should show up there. Click to connect.
You will have a choice to connect under a password or as a guest. If you want security, set up passwords, otherwise just use guest.

  • Connecting two computers...

    Hello peeps,
I hope I've come to the right place.
Minutes ago I needed to get some files from one computer to the other, so I figured I'd email them to myself. But then I thought: both computers are literally next to each other, there's got to be a way to send files back and forth without the need of email; and the use of a cable.
You see I am using a router... the one computer (a WindowsXP Home Edition desktop machine) connects directly via an ethernet cable, the other (a MacOSX Tiger MacBook Pro) connects wirelessly.
I've tried as much as I could to find out how to link those two machines, but I can't even make my Mac detect that there is a second computer in the area (using the same router), let alone my Windows, which I am becoming more and more unfamiliar with (because I use my Mac 99% of the time).
Since I honestly don't have a clue, I am just going to wait until somebody who is taught in this kind of stuff, on both operating systems as well, to tell me the steps to take. So please, please, if you can, take the time and try to solve this problem with me as best as you are able to through a forum...
I don't know, are there just a few, simple steps to setting up a local network kind of thing that I am missing, or would you need some technical information from me?
Lastly, I wish everybody a great new year, all the way!!!!

    Templeton Peck,
first thank you a lot for giving me this link; it's a very detailed article and it surely would have solved my problem if I wasn't so unlucky.
I was successful from stages one to four. Stage five I couldn't manage. First I didn't exactly know which IP address to use for my Windows machine.
And then I became confused about the definition of a subnet of an IP address. Partly because the help-site you referred me to got me unsure about which part of the IP address is supposed to be the same, and which is variable.
But that was probably just me!
And when finally something did happen, and I was prompted to enter my Windows workgroup, username and password, the "connecting" box would just stay open for as long as I endured.
Then I would have to relaunch the finder through Onyx since clicking the X to stop the connection attempt didn't do anything.
Or, I would get an error message:
But I really tried everything, including the inclusion of the full folder path in the smb-URL, as you can see...
So unless I frigged something up at stage three...
...this is probably going to be another one of those cases that can't be solved. To be clear: I am unlucky!
Nonetheless, I'd be grateful for another helpful reply from you or anyone else! I might be getting there with continuous help from experienced people, who I hope to meet here
