Connecting two iMac with?

So I have a 27inch retina imac and a  mid-2011 21.5inch iMac. I want to use the 2011 iMac as a external display (target mode?) to my 27inch.
I have tried using the mini display port to hdmi adaptor but it won't recognise the external monitor. I thought mini display port works with thunderbolt?
do i need to get the thunderbolt cable from apple? I need to confirm this because the thunderbolt cable is pretty expensive!
and my iMacs operating system is yosemite.

You need the Thunderbolt cable.

  • Connecting two iMac with a Firewire cable

Hello. First off, I have two iMac, one is a 24" early 2009 model (from now on, the "big") andthe other is a 21" first generation Intel (from now on, the "small")
Big one is sick, need heavy reparation. So a user of the forum recommended this:
"+Since you're able to post here, you have another Mac. You can use a FireWire cable to connect your iMac to another Mac in Target Disk Mode. This essentially turns your iMac into an expensive external HD enclosure. To boot your iMac into Target Disk Mode, start up your iMac and hold down the T key immediately after you hear the startup sound. Release it when you see the big FireWire symbol on the screen.+
+Then you can use a FireWire cable to connect your iMac to another Mac. This should mount the iMac's hard disk on the desktop of the other Mac. I suggest you use DiskWarrior to try to recover the files on your iMac's hard disk.+"
So, mi issue is that big one doesn't have a Firewire port. It's almost unbelievable but the true is that those models never came with that kind of port.
Any idea of what kind of cable should I use to link both computers? Thanks in advance!

    Hi killthepixel
Both have FireWire Ports, the problem is that the Early 09 has a FireWire 800 port and the other if it's an Early white 20" has two FireWire 400 ports.
If that is the case, then you would need a 6 to 9 pin FireWire cable to connect the two systems up in Target Disk Mode.

Lastly have you tried to boot and fix the sick iMac using the Install Disk that came with it.

  • Connect two iMacs in order to exchange data

    Hello everyone,
I am about to buy a new iMac and would like to connect my old iMac via wire to exchange data. I do not want to use the migration assistant as I want to clean up my data. So is there a way to connect these two computers in a way that the old one appears like an external device in the finder of the new one?
Sorry if this questions has been asked before but I have been browsing the web for the past 90 minutes in order to find an answer to this question - no luck so far or I am just searching with the wrong keywords.

There is a way to do what you want: Target Disk mode.
The only thing you need is a FireWire 800 cable and a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter for the new iMac. After connecting both iMacs with the Thunderbolt cable, hold the T key while your old iMac is starting up to start up in Target Disk mode, so the old iMac's hard drive will show up in the Finder sidebar of the new iMac as an external drive. There you can transfer the files you want to your new iMac.
If you have got an old iMac with FireWire 400 instead, everything is much more difficult, because you may need a FireWire 400 to 800 cable too.
Another way would be to connect both Macs to the same network and transfer your files over Wi-Fi, but it is a long and slow process

  • I have 2? How do I sync selected photos from my IPad to my IMac w/o losing all photos on my IPad and getting the phoos o my IMac. ou see I have two IMacs with different sets of photos. Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac.

I have 2? How do I sync selected photos from my IPad to my IMac w/o losing all photos on my IPad which will be replaced with the photos on my IMac.You see I have two IMacs with different sets of photos. Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac. Is there and app available to do the former. many thanks. b

The iPad and related software is designed to sync with only one computer. I suggest transferring the photos from one of your iMacs to the other so that all photos are on one Mac. Same for all other files you want to sync over.
To get those AppleWorks files to the iPad you'll have to determine if Pages will open them. If it will then use the file sharing feature of iTunes to copy them to Pages on your pad.
If Pages will not open the AppleWorks files directly you'll have to save them in some format that Pages will read. These include but may not be limited to Pages and Word formats.

  • Can connect two Macs with USB2 cable?

Can connect two Macs with USB2 cable?

You can connect two Macs with an ethernet wire, or conect two Macs using Firewire if one is placed in target disk mode, but that is it.

  • What happen when we connect Two PC with IP from Same subnets

Scenario 2nd : What happen when we connect Two PC with IP from Same subnets. PC1 -192.168.10.1/24 PC2 - 192.168.10.2 on a two different L2 Switch on different vlans which are connected via a LAN cable.
    All ports are access ports
Interview Question : No More Info.
    Pc1<SwA>------<SwB>PC2
Q.1 Will they communicate If yes what will be packet/frame flow.
Q.2 If not where will be the packet/frame drop. ? Why.
I need step by step if possible plz how the packet moves , vlan taggings n all internal works that happens behind .. plz
    thnx in advnce ....

    Hi Abhishesk,
The PCs should communicate each othet.
Since there is no trunk port involved, there is not tagging involved.
Since both the PCs are into the same subnet. PC1 will not need default gateway for the communication with PC2. So PC1 will start with sending ARP request for PC2 MAC address.
Since all the ports in SW1 are in same VLAN, the ARP should reach all ports including the switchport where SW2 is connected to.
Sw2 has got a complete different access port on ALL the switchports. Sw2 will receive the ARP from Sw1. Remember that there is no tagging for the frame. Hence Sw2 will again send the ARP packet to all the ports which belong to same VLAN wherein the packet is received. ie, Sw2 will send the ARP packet to all the ports in Sw2. PC2 will also get the the ARP.
The ARP reply will make it way back using the same logic.
Now both the PCs can start the actual packet exchange.

  • How to connect two iMacs to the same FCE project?

    Hello All,
Right now I have an iMac that is about 1 year old. I'm about to purchase another iMac. What I want to do is run FCE on both and work on the same video project on both. Is this possible?
So the idea would be that I one person A could color correct and person B could edit and perform other functions on the second iMac. Can you hook them up by firewire and do this or is this beyond what you can do with FCE and two iMacs?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

    Hello Michael,
First, you will need two fully licensed copies of FCE, one for each iMac. Each license allows you to install FCE on 1 Apple desktop + 1 Apple laptop as long as you own both computers and do not use FCE on both at the same time. But it *does not* allow you to install it on 2 Apple desktop computers (eg iMacs).
Second, in order for two people on different computers to access the same project, you would have to store all the media & scratch files in a common location, and set up each copy of FCE to access the files from that location. The problems with this approach are 1) FCE cannot do this over a network, 2) you cannot connect an external FW drive to both computers at the same time, 3) FCE prefers that your FCE Project file(s) be on your system HD.
You could use an external FW drive to store your media & scratch files; then connect the FW drive to the computer that is going to work on the project - but not to 2 computers at the same time. You will still have to copy the FCE project file between the two iMacs each time you swap from one to the other for editing.

  • Connect two iMac

You can connect an iMac 27-inch iMac with another 27 "and use it as a display monitor?
E' possibile collegare un iMac 27" ad un altro iMac 27", quindi utilizzarlo come monitor di visualizzazione?

    Yes.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
    Summary
With Target Display mode, you can use your 27-inch iMac with Mac OS X as an external display. Connect any computer or other device with a Mini DisplayPort to your 27-inch iMac using a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable or using a converter that converts other electrical, video, and audio protocols from another source device to Mini DisplayPort compliant signals. (Cables and converters available separately.)
To use a 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • Help! Syncmaster 1100 blurry when connected to Imac with Mini DVI to Vga

    Hi,
I recently tried to use my Samsung SyncMaster 1100 (21") as a secondary display But when I connect it with the mini dvi to vga adapter to my imac the image looks blurry. Is there some compatibility isue with syncmaster 1100?
Please Help!, I tryed the imac with a different secondary monitor and it works fine. I tested my syncmaster with another pc and it works fine. I don't know what else to do.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Josh,
To start, it is considered extremely impolite to type in all capital letters as you have done. Please use all lower case, or preferably properly capitalised text, in future.
With regards to the problem you're having.. the reason you only see the desktop background is due to screen spanning. If you want the external display to display the same thing as the internal display, go to the displays system preferences pane, and check the box that says "Mirroring"
The color problem is probably due to a loose connection somewhere, either between the iMac and its adaptor, the adaptor and the cable to the projector, or between the projector and the cable plugging into it. If you're still having problems, try different adaptor cables, or try plugging it into a different monitor to try to work out which one is causing a problem.
    Good luck

  • Is it possible to directly connect two Xserves with a Promise VTrak E610fD via Fibre?

I have two Xserves and I'd like to connect them with a Promise VTrak E610fD. As this storage has two controllers, I'd like to connect both Xserve with both controllers. Is this setup possible? Can I access (read and write) the same disk array with both Xserves simultaneously (Xsan?) or do I have to create two separate arrays?

Hello bleistift, and welcome to the AppleBoards,
Fibre channel is SCSI which means that any device connected by fibre assumes it is in sole control of that device. When you attach more than one machine via fibre both machines assume they are in control and unexpected behaviors and data corruption ensues. SAN (like Apple's XSAN) provides a layer of arbitration over the shares allowing multiple fibre connections to play nicely with one another while still being connected over fibre.
You could easily connect two machines to a single RAID box if they are accessing different RAID volumes at the same time, but once you start connecting to the same data at the same time you need SAN.

  • Connect two G5 with 1000BASE-T (Gigabit) - how?

what i need to connect two G5 dual 1.8 with 1000BASE-T (Gigabit)?
just a cable or some cards and routers and ....?

Yeah, like tele_player said, it's a little harder if you want them to both have internet. We just set up our MDD and quad on a gigabit switch that so they can communicate with each other at gigabit speeds and then the switch was hooked up to a router for internet access. It wasn't that bad and we got all the supplies online for cheap. 50 foot sections of CAT 6 cost about $10. If you need to go through walls or anything like that, get the tool-less keystone jack connectors...they'll make your life much easier.

  • Connecting two iMacs using second one as display

I have two iMacs 8,1(2210) 20", I would like to setup it up as dual display (using one of them as a display only). Is it possible? Can't seem to find the right cable (mini dvi to mini dvi). Any suggestion? I saw a video with something about "command+f2" to extent the displays, is that right?
