Connecting two Mac minis and using one monitor

I am thinking about getting two Mac minis to run concurrently, accessing both on the same Thunderbolt Display (also to be acquired) using screen sharing and connecting the two Macs via firewire (or thunderbolt).
I have certain programs I need to run in Windows (Bloomberg terminal and MS Excel in Windows version) but don't want to run them in parallel on one computer as (in my experience) the performance is very slow.
By running two computers at the same time, I'm hoping that can avoid the entire system griding to a halt. I also think it will allow me to upgrade more cheaply as the Mac mini is improved over time.
Is this a completely daft idea? Would I be better off with a new iMac or a refurbish Mac Pro?
Any feedback is welcome, even of the abusive variety.

"File sharing preferences" is indeed how to do it.  Connect both minis to your router (one by ethernet cable, one by wifi, it doesn't matter.)
Then turn on "File Sharing" in Sharing Prefs on both minis.  Also, give them both meaningful, different names under "Computer Name".
Then, when you open a finder window on one mini, the other one should appear under "Shared", like this:

  • Can I turn off the monitor for Mac Mini and use it as a music server?

I am in the process of upgrading my PC most likely to a Mac product. With the non-server version of Mac OS X, can I turn off the monitor connected to a Mac Mini and use it as a streaming server? Or I have to get the server version of OS X to do that?

I plan to run Logitech Media Server on the Mac to stream music to players. Each player interacts with the Logitech Media Server to select songs to stream. When I turn on a player, it will wake up the computer from the sleep mode.
Currently, this Logitech Media Server runs on a Windows Vista machine and it will keep the PC from entering sleep mode while playing the songs. After I play the last song, the PC will start the idle count down and then enter into sleep mode.
Do you see any problem with my intended use of a Mac Mini?

  • Connecting Both Mac Mini and MacBook Pro to single LED display

Is it possible to dock two mac computers to the same monitor, and have the ability to switch between each computer on the fly?
I am trying to dock both a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini to the same 24" Apple LED display. I would like it to be as close to a "switch" solution as possible, where it takes only a single button push to change between which computer is being displayed on the monitor. I am used to a PC, where I can hook two computers up to the same monitor, and change the input in the monitor to switch between the two computers that are hooked up to it.
Since there are not any buttons on my monitor, and I am not used to Mac's yet, I am not sure how to easily switch? I was told I could do it when I bought it, but now the help desk is closed....

I was hoping there was a better option. I have the wireless keyboard and mouse, and the two computers. I doubt there is a way to switch the wireless keyboard/mouse without disabling and reconnecting the bluetooth connection (and I really do not think there is a KVM switch for bluetooth devices yet)...
That being said, I was hoping to continue to control the laptop with the laptop keyboard, and the mini with the wireless devices, and NOT go the KVM switch route... I was hoping there was a way to have the mini and the macbook both connected, and either push a button or access a menu to switch between the two...
So am I hearing that this is not a viable option? I need to invest in a potentially expensive KVM switch, or run one of the two computers remotely from the other?
The reason I am frustrated is that I was told when making the purchase that it was very much possible (by multiple employees over the phone and in store). I was also told by the tech people over the phone that everything I needed to do so would be in the box (no extra cables or anything needing purchase).

  • Connecting two Mac minis...

I'm trying to send a text file through Airport to another Mac mini. I think Personal File Sharing would allow me to put files I want to transfer in my Public folder, then retrieve them on the other Mac mini, but when I tried to do this, I had some problems...
I first enabled Personal File Sharing in System Preferences, then went to the other Mac mini and went to the address I was given in Sarfari(it was afp://(some numbers)). Then a dialog box popped up and said Connect to the file server "My Mac Mini", then had two buttons for either Guest or Registered User.
It was preset on Registered User, but was asking for a name and password which I'm not sure what password they want. Because I didn't know the password for a Registered User, I tried to access as a guest. I selected the button by Guest and pushed Connect. Another dialog window came up and asked me which volumes to mount with a list of computers(mine was the only one on there). I'm new to Macs and I don't know what mounting the volume would do. I don't need a permanent icon on the other Mac mini's desktop, I just want to access files from both computers without having to switch between computers.
Could someone please explain to me what mounting a volume does, and maybe the registered user option when you are "logging into" the computer?
    Thanks!

OK - Let's start with some basics:
    * If all you want is to drop files onto a remote computer - it's simplest to use the Drop Box - that way you can choose guest and forget about passwords and user names.
If you need to access either the whole folder of a remote user (Their photos/documents/everything in their "Home" directory (Go -> Home on finder will take you to your local home folder) - then you need to know the short user name and password on the remote computer you want to connect to.
You can see the short name and change the password if needed using the Accounts prefernce pane.
All mounting a volume does is the user/password and create a point on your computer where the files "show up" - once that is done - you can do anything you want as if the files were really on your hard disk - except the commands to write a file, copy, delete or move the file - will go through the network if the file really is on the other computer.

axis2012 - best to read through this article that explains most of what you ask. Please post if a specific part needs elaboration or if you get confused about something. (skip anything about AppleTalk - that is for older pre-OS X computers - best to use the newer version if everyone is on X)

the short answer is you need to enable Personal File Sharing on each computer that will accept another to see the files that are local to that computer. Then you have to choose to either share a user/password to mount a share - or restrict operations to one way dropping (Into the drop box) - with no way to look at files that are not in the public folder.

  • Connecting new mac mini and a pc to internet

I have ordered a new mac mini and airport express to connect it to my broadband connection. I have a none wireless pc already connected to the DSL. This is a usb connection to the pc.
Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port? Will this work and would the Mac then pick up the connected printer?

Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port?
No, this will not work. To use an AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station, you will need a DSL modem that has an Ethernet port. The reason is that the USB connection requires a software driver to be installed on your computer. Since it's not possible to install drivers (Mac OS, Windows or otherwise) on the AirPort Express because it's not a computer, you'll need to use the Ethernet port. I would recommend you visit the AirPort Express forum. There are some knowledgeable people there who can help you find a new modem that has Ethernet and get everything configured for you.

  • Loose connection between Mac Mini and Apple TV 2

Help!     I have a new Mac Mini 2.5 ghz running Lion and Apple TV2 hooked up to my 32 inch LG TV.
Before I got the Mac Mini, Apple TV was running just fine on the same network with my Win 7 machine.
Ever since I got the Mac Mini and I run the Apple Tv at the same time.  I loose connection on both.  My cable provider replaced the router and all my other Win 7 machines run just fine on a wireless network.  I might also add that when the apple tv and mac mini goes down, my ipad 2 goes down too.  Of course, air play doesn't work .  It comes and goes.
I have a 2nd Apple TV 2 and hooked that up to the same tv with the same results.  I have called Apple many times.  They are helpful but not been able to solve my problem.   The cable provider and I have traced down to a conflict between the Apple TV, Mac Mini and the IPAD 2 .
Does anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

I have had multiple ATV's, desktops, laptops, and i Devices all running at the same time without a problem. Typically on a network when you start 2 devices and the connection crashes it is an IP problem. Check the IP address on both devices and see. It is usually easiest to have the router assign IPs automatically using DHCP. The router, computers, and ATVs should also be set to DHCP.
If everything is set to DHCP try disabling DHCP and assign fixed IPs to each device.

  • Two mac mini and raid 1

    Hi All,
Two mac mini with thunderbolt cable connecting, the second mac as external hard drive.
Set on the first mac RAID 1 with the second mac...
When the first mac fails, the second one can directly be started.
    Is that even possible?
    Thank you!
    michael

    Yes it is.
You will need to boot from a third temporary drive to first setup both Mac minis as a RAID 1 mirror.
Note: This will destroy any data on both Mac minis.
After building the RAID 1 then you can install Mavericks on to the RAID.

  • May i buy a mac mini and use as time capsule for my ipad?

If i purchase the Mac min, instead of Timm capsule, can i use it as a automatic backup for my Ipad?
    Take note:
a/. my home as the router, and i am connect my Mac mini to internet through wifi.
b/. Ipad also in the wifi zone

The iPad would be backed up to the Mac when you connect it to iTunes on that Mac and do a sync and backup.
When iOS 5 comes out for the iPad tomorrow, you will also be able to a more limited backup to the iCloud service Apple are providing free of charge which also launches tomorrow.
Note: The iCloud backup is not as full a backup as doing a full sync and backup via iTunes.

  • I cant establish a connection between Mac mini and the wireless keyboard

I just bought a Mac mini but I can't link the wireless keyboard with the Mac mini

Same with my new mac mini.
Got it brand new via the online shop.
Happy to start with the new mac i really got dissapointed by the fact that it`s impossible to pair the wireless keyboard unless you first connect a USB keyboard to the mac mini and start the configuration.
    THIS ***** !!!
No hint at all from apple that you first have to connect the USB keyboard.
I had to borrowed a USB keyboard from my neighbour :-((
After setting things up it was no problem at all to establish the BT connection with the keyboard.
    Works fine now.

  • Connecting two Mac Minis using wifi

    My actual set up:
Bedroom - Macmini (2007) linked to a dsl modem via an ethernet cable. A Samsung display, a LaCie 2tb drive, are also connected to it.
    In a very near future:
LivingRoom - Macmini (2011, to be delivered in a couple of days... hopefully) will have access to internet via wifi. A 55" TV, a LaCie Minimus 2tb drive (a clone of the other one in the bedroom) and a DAC will be connected to the new mini.
    My question:
How can I connect the two minis together using wifi so that I can have easy acces to all the files in the drive connected to the Mac mini in the other room?
I have looked at the "File sharing preferences" in the system preferences but I am not that sure how to do it.
A little guidance would be greatly appreciated!

  • How do I connect my Mac Mini (DVI) to a monitor (VGA) and 2 TV's (HDMI)?  What equipment do I need?

I have an older Mac Mini with a DVI out.  Right now using a monitor with VGA in, and since my Mini came with the adapter, all is good.  However, I'm trying to use this setup to also connect 2 50" TV's that have HDMI's.  What would be the proper setup in order to run the mini and the monitor along with the TV's?  Thanks!

You need USB to video adopters. See:

  • 2011 Mac Mini and Acer x222w monitor incompatible? HDMI to DVI adapter issue

I am totally bummed because I just bought a new Mac Mini thinking I'd be able to use the display from my old system, an Acer x222w, which has both DVI-D and VGA connections. I hooked the monitor up using the HDMI to DVI adapter included in the box with the Mini. On boot, I could see the Apple logo, though it was not centered, and when the set up screen came up to the select language screen, it flashed quickly and then turned to snow.
I was on the phone with Apple support for over an hour trying to troubleshoot this issue. I was a little disappointed that tech support didn't even seem to  be aware that the Mini came with an HDMI to DVI adapter. It was then recommended that I try an adapter for the mini display port, which the 2011 Mini doesn't have.
I was able to borrow another monitor, a Dell with DVI-D, and it worked.
I have searched for specs/requirements that might explain why the Acer monitor doesn't work while the Dell one does. I cannot find anything from Apple. I just assumed any DVI connection would work. Has anybody else encountered this problem? Most of the issues I've found on the forums involve trying to hook up to a home theater LCD TV, which I'm not trying to do. If I had known my monitor wouldn't work, I probably would have just saved up for an iMac.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or tips!

  • Mac mini and 52" TV monitor -- menu bars invisible

Last summer I bought a mac mini for my Samsung 22" TV/DVI monitor. The mini immediately recognized the TV as a specific DVI monitor and all was well.
The only problem was the monitor was smaller than my iMac screen. A bigger TV was inevitable. We eventually moved, and the idea of using binoculars to watch TV held little appeal, so I bought a 52" Samsung.
I bought a DVI to HDMI cable, as this TV had no DVI input (unlike the 22" combo TV/DVI monitor) and the mini recognizes it generically as "Samsung" and chooses "1080p" for the monitor resolution. (I assume this is preferred to 1080i, even though the refresh rate is slower?).
I want to use this both as a "Front Row" interface for iTunes movies, etc, and as a conventional monitor for when I want to do computery things.
The menu bar (as well as the bottom of the dock) are invisible. They are there when I remotely display the screen, so I think they might just be hidden by the frame. Is there a viable workaround? Of the 15 or so possible resolutions, exactly one shows the menu bar, but at the expense of lower resolution and terrible color balance (oddly, if I rotate the image 180° in Display System Preferences, the color looks ok).
Also, while I am at it, what is the optimal way to export audio from the mac mini into a stereo input? Right now I am using the headphone jack, and it sounds ok, but I suspect there might be a much better way.

I've been having this same problem! My Mini plugged into my 42" HDTV (via DVI to HDMI adapter, with Overscan enabled) has the desktop overflowing the screen on all four sides. With Overscan disabled, the desktop is too small and has a black band on all four sides.
Now, I know the Nvidia GPU can scale/stretch the display for external displays, I had to do it with my Vista laptop. So, how do I do the same thing on my Mini?
I've called tech support, but I had no luck. The first guy would only say 'You can't do anything else.' and hung up when I asked for someone else. The second guy didn't even understand the issue.

  • Brand new 2.66 Mac Mini and HP w20 monitor

I have just changed, or attempted to change, from VGA connection using an adaptor from my wife's MacBook Pro, to a DVI cable attached to the HDMI-DVI adaptor that came with the Mini.
Sadly, the result is a fuzzy pixelation of the screen, much like a gently boiling soup. Occasionally, when I hit one of the buttons on the monitor, the screen clears to reveal the desktop, but then it goes back to soup.
The DVI cable is designed for home theatre use, 10 metres long so that I could connect to the TV on the other side of the room, multi-layed shielding, oxygen free copper, etc etc.
When I connect to a pretty ordinary digital television set using an HDMI cable it all works pretty well.
Is there not enough power from the HDMI port to get through 10m of cable?

You might give a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter a try.
Regarding the 10 meter cable, I have no idea of the Mac mini's limitation there. I find no info in a search. The best way to test that is to see if the results are better with a shorter cable. If the results are better, then you would at least have your answer.
