Connecting two macs for the internet

I have a powermac G4 with tiger and would like to buy a G5 imac. What is the best way to connect both of them up to my Ethernet ADSL modem so that two users can access the internet at the same time?

Cheapest way - go to your local computer shop and buy any internet router (will cost you around $30) along with two ethernet cables of the appropriate length. At home:
- cable the DSL modem to the router's internet or WAN port
- cable the PowerMac and the iMac each to one of the four ethernet LAN ports provided by most routers
If you want to have the iMac connect wirelessly with its built in wireless network interface, buy a wireless router at your local computer shop (costs $30-60) and set it up as I described above - only difference is that the iMac connects wirelessly.
Other options:
- buy an Apple Airport Express ($129), and a wireless network PCI card for your Powermac ($80). Both Macs will the wirelessly share the internet connection.
- buy an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station ($199). Cable the Powermac to its LAN port; the iMac connects wirelessly.

  • Sharing files between two macs over the internet

I'm trying to work out how to connect two macs across the internet and am wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a "very basic , step by step, how to" file or manual.
I've browsed some of the discussion in this forum and some are more helpful than others but none seem to start with the very basics of what should or should not be turned on in the firewall settings and the the security issues mentioned in one ot two threads.
I'm not looking for " hold my hand tutorial" just a pointer to where I can do some more reading so I can inform myself and possibly ask some emore intelligent questions
I'm trying to connect a B&W G3, OSX 10.4.6, connect to the internet through a dsl modem over an ethernet network, to a remote Imac G5 , OSX 10.4.6 also connected through a different dsl modem over an ethernet network.
    Thanks

  • Network Two Macs, access the internet from both.

    Frustration.
I have a Mac Pro, and an older Power Mac G4. I had them networked in such a way as both could access the internet. The G4's access stopped working because I had a power outage, and had to restart everything. I am guessing this has something to do the cable modems MAC address.
At any rate: Here is what I have. A LinkSYS Cable Modem, A Netgear Switch (8 Ports) and the 2 computers. Both computers are connected to the switch. The cable modem is in port 1, the MacPro port 2, The G4 Port 3. The MacPro, does connect to the Internet. The G4 does not. I had this working before. It worked wonderfully. But I think after restarting everything, and somehow not getting the sequence right or something, I cannot get it back to working. I don't want a router. As it slows down my 16MB per sec net connection, and ruins the ping rate for gaming.
Any input, light you can shed on this situation is of course greatly appreciated. Merry Christmas!

Nope. The MAC address does not change. The IP address might change.

    what model cable modem?

I suspect that you have a router, built into the cable modem. Virtually all Linksys cable modems have a router built into them. In addition, unless you have arranged to have two Internet connections from your cableco, you must have a router to have two devices connected to the Internet. If you have a router you can have multiple devices on one connection. If you don't, you can have only one. You may have turned off the router functions on your modem. What is the IP address showing on your Mac Pro? If it is something in the 192.168.x.y range, where 'x' is a number from 0 to 255 and 'y' is a number from 1 to 254, or in the 172.z.x.y range where 'z' is a number from 16 to 31, or in the 10.x.x.y range, then you probably have a private network which means that you have a router built into that modem and its router functions are turned on. If your IP is a different number you probably either don't have a router built in (unlikely) or its router functions are off (very likely).
If your have a private network and your G4 is not connecting, you need to determine what the IP is on the G4. If it is 0.0.0.0, then you have a damaged network card and need to replace it. If it is 169.254.x.y then your G4 is not seeing the router for some reason, likely because the router functions on your modem are off. If it is something else we need to know what it is.

  • How do i use a Bluetooth phone to connect my Mac to the internet?

Please help me connect to the internet using my Bluetooth enabled phone's GPRS feature. I know an easier way would be to use Launch2net...but at 75Euros...too expensive. It used to be easy prior to Leopard but since I've upgraded to Leopard...the feature seems to have vanished.

who is your provider, here in the UK t-mobile give you launch2net for free.
however you dont need that software.
You just need a modem script for your model of phone.
you can get modem scripts for most phone from ross barkmans' homepage

  • Connecting 2 macs through the internet.

I have an imac in my home and a powermac in my girl's home, i want to be able to control the imac and vice versa. how can i achieve this? i have a speedtouch modem router in my home with the imac and a dlink in the other. i use 10.5.4. thanks in advance!

The security implications of this do need to be thought through. By advertising availability on common screen access ports (like 5900), you will be inviting a lot of additional "hack" traffic to your router.
You need to ensure that the screen sharing data is encrypted. There is a setting for this in the Screen Sharing preferences, although I am not entirely clear on what level of encryption that it uses when you enable it. Another approach is to use "ssh tunnelling" for the connection (This has the additional benefit of only requiring port 22 to be open on the firewall).
To keep the service running over time, you need to ensure that the port forwarding for each router is to a static ip address. Otherwise, when you disconnect and reconnect to the network, it is possible that your screen sharing setup will stop working.
A lot of this setup and effort can be avoided with a service like logmein (it takes care of the encryption, and avoids any need to reconfigure your router).
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • How can I connect two macs in the same network?

Both are connected to the same network. One via ethernet and the other via Wifi (Airport Extreme). Both share the same Internet conection. I have followed instructions for files sharing. I can access only the computer linked to my home network via ethernet, but not the other way. It does not found the server address provided in file sharing by the computer conected via Wifi. Any clue? Can it be that the IP address of the Wifi conected is DCHP?

Are you using Connect to Server or Shared sidebar in the Finder? What OS X versions do the two machines run?

  • Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet.

Hi, I'm using a Mac Pro here. I am trying to connect it with my NAS hard drive. But i could not connect to it because i have an ethernet which connects to the intranet in my company and Air Port for the internet and it could not detect the the ip address after i input the correct address on "Connect to Server" window. Please help! Urgent! Thanks

I did not say it is not possible.
I said if your company networks are monopolizing both ports, you should talk to them about what options are available.
Maybe you can get the company Intranet over wireless if you change some configuration items such as Subnet Mask.
Maybe you can get on the Internet over Ethernet.
You really need to ask them, and do not let them blow you off because you have a Mac. If they balk, ask them how it would be done on a PC (becasue it will be the same on a Mac).

  • Going online with two macs kills my internet connection!

Here is my situation. I have two macs an iMac and a MacBook.
I use Earthlink, have a BritePort modem and "HAD" Linksys wireless router. Everything was fine. No problems. I was able to get online with the two computers with ease, then I had problems connecting last week. If I went directly through the modem to my MacBook I can connect, but I would lose the internet intermittently throughout the day if i didn't.
Earthlink said everything was fine as far as signal reaching my modem. So I bought an Airport Extreme thinking it was the router. Both Macs connected wirelessly on their own but then I'd lose internet whenever BOTH tried to get online at the same time.
I would be working fine on my MacBook, but once my wife tries to get online with the iMac, it kicks us both off! If she's online on the iMac and I try to get online on the MacBook it kicks us off! This is what was happening with the Linksys too! I reconnected it, and it was only when both Macs accessed the internet that we both lost (or were fighting for) connection.
    What is going on?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
What's the model number of your BritePort modem? When you examine the configuration of your AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility, in the Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, what are the settings for "Connect Using" and "Connection Sharing"?

  • How do I connect my Centro to the Internet via bluetooth over PC's Internet? Where is Centro's PPP Connection Type? How do I setup Login Script for bluetooth connection?

I am trying to set up bluetooth on the Centro to connect to the internet via my PC's internet.
    HotSync over bluetooth works successfully.
Computer specs: Toshiba P205-S6277; Bluetooth Stack v5.10.04 (currently using); Bluetooth Monitor v3.01 (to use Vista's built-in bluetooth)
I think I have narrowed my problem down to 3 things.
    (1) Finding Network Access properties (to allow connected devices to access the internet)
    (2) Finding Centro's Network Connection Type: PPP
    (3) Finding the correct Login Script to use
for (1) I think I've looked everywhere; found nothing on Network Access.
Checked control panel: only Bluetooth Local COM
Right-clicked bluetooth icon > Settings: File transfer, PAN Networking, PAN DHCP server, AV controls. Other bluetooth settings are for file transfer or object push. I don't see anything like this.
I'm stumped on (2). It seems as if palm removed this option under Centro's Advanced network settings .
Nearly all the forums that I read says to choose Connection Type: PPP.
    (3) Found 2 scripts that seemed would work. I don't know how it exactly works but it sounds workable.
    First script:
    Send: CLIENT
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait for: CLIENTSERVER
    End:
    Script 1 Connect Log:
    =======================================
    Connect Log
    S: client
    S: client
    R:
    Err: 0x121F   <<<netErrUserCancel b/c I canceled it.
    Not connected
    ========================================
I canceled it because the process would stay on "Signing In" then it automatically "Canceled" itself.
    Second script:
    Send CR:
    Delay: 1
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait For: CLIENTSERVER
    End
**UPDATE** I found on this forum (Reply # 3689) that the script is needed only if you are using Palm OS 4 or under. Centro uses Palm OS 5.49121. Can anyone support this?
Even without the script it has problems "Signing In".
I'm currently reading this site and trying out its decribed methods. I will update this thread when I get the results.
I'm using the Centro. And If anyone's been able to successfully connect to the internet on the Centro via a bluetooth connection to the PC WITHOUT 3rd party applications, please share.  If not, please share any ideas.
    Thanks!

I've been going at this for days, and have probably exhausted all the proposed solutions on the first 3 pages of various google searches. I'm getting the feeling that Vista users are pretty much SOL for the time being.
For the record, I just tried out a few of the solutions (mRouter & SoftickPPP) on XP and they work perfectly.

  • How do I get Firefox to open when I dial up to connect to the internet, instead of internet explorer for the internet service provider?

I have a dial up connection for the internet through Netzero.com, and when I click on it to dial up to the internet, it brings up the Netzero home page on Internet Explorer. I've changed my default home page from Internet Explorer, to Firefox, but when the internet is connected, Internet Explorer is the one that brings up the Netzero home page, not Firefox, so I have to click on the icon for Firefox, and then it opens, with Netzero home page on it, so I have to go through 2 different processes to get to use Firefox. I downloaded Firefox because it's suppose to be faster that Internet Explorer, especially since Internet Explorer keeps not responding when I'm in the middle of doing something. So I thought I'd try Firefox, but it doesn't seem to be faster than Internet Explorer, since the ISP that I have has a web accelerator, but it doesn't work on Firefox for some reason, I can see on a meter on my desktop when it's accelerating, and Firefox doesn't accelerate ever, if I change over to Internet Explorer, I can see the meter accelerating the web page. Hope you can help me with this problem, as I like Firefox. Thank you very much.

Try changing firefox to the default browser: [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser]. That will probably get firefox to open when you dial up.
I'm not sure what you mean by "the meter accelerating the web page". Can you explain that?
    Thank you

  • I am unable to connect my ipad to the internet via wifi, when asked for my password I get message "unable toI ge join network" however my laptop is able to access the internet using similar procedures and in the same physical location.?

I am unable to connect my IPad to the internet via WiFi, when asked for a password then attempt to join I get the messag "unable to join the network" however  if I use my laptop in  the same physical locationand using similar procedures I am able to conect.?

What router are you using? make/model/version
What security type are you using? If it is WEP then symbolic (non hex) keys may be converted to hex in different ways by different operating systems. Is your laptop a Windows PC?
If you are using WEP then drop it and move to WPA2. WEP has been deprecated by the WiFi alliance since 2004 as insecure (it can be hacked in seconds).

  • I can connect my tc to the internet and back up my iMac, but it will not back up my mac book pro... ANY thoughts?

i can connect my tc to the internet and back up my iMac, but it will not back up my mac book pro... ANY thoughts?

When I go to connect my MBP, it says I have the wrong user name and/or password; however the names and password are the same on both computers.
The MBP connects smoothly to the internet, just not the TC.
    Does this help?
There is no login name required to get internet unless you are running a vpn or pppoe client.
The wireless uses a security key.. but that is fixed in the wireless setup.. so no user login should be required at any time.
It sounds to me like you have the wrong setup.
Please do a screen shot and post it of the imac setup that works.. show us the airport network with its ip address and where you are putting in the login.
Please also do a snapshot of the TC and how it is setup.
    What broadband do you have?
Is the TC a router or bridged?

If you are saying that you have one license left of a three license edition MS Office for Mac 2011, then all you have to do is download a MS Office trial for Mac from the MS website. Using the available license registration number, you can activate the downloaded trial and have the same functionality as if you had used the disks and registered with that same number.
