Connecting two printers wirelessly to Airport network?

Hi,
I currently have a working wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router BEFW11S4 - which I believe is 802.11b - that connects 2-4 laptops at any point in time.
I just purchased the new Airport Extreme 54 mbp Base Station. I would like to
1. Set up the Airport network.
2. Put our two printers on the network and print wirelessly.
The printers are on are far away (1st floor) from the cable internet access point (2nd floor) so USB connection is not an option.
I have two questions:
1. Would it be better/simpler to purchase a print server to connect to my Airport network and make the two printers available for wireless printing?
2. Is it possible to connect ("bridge") the two wireless routers and then place one router close to the printers and connect via USB. If yes, should the configuration be Airport to Linksys or Linksys to Airport?
If there are any more simple/smart solutions than the options I came up with - they will be much appreciated. Thanks for reading this long question!

MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Complex question that I don't think I can answer all of...
Airport Extreme Base Station - can connect only one USB printer - no hub permitted.
Print Servers (other than Extreme/Express) - work great for postscript printers, but are problematic with non-postscript printers. Printing to print servers uses "standard" protocols. In OS X, the "standard" protocols are provided by CUPS, so they need cups-capable drivers on OS X. Brother is the Only non-postscript printer manufacturer so far to provide CUPS drivers. Many non-postscript printers can be made to work with third-party drivers (Gimp-Print is one of these), but most people are unsatisfied with print quality (if you want to print photos for example).
I think wireless bridging will work with the Airport BS in the "receiving side" only -- but I haven't tried that.
For more help on the printers/network printing, need to know the printer models.
Hope this gets you started.

  • Connecting two computers, wirelessly, using Airport?

I have a IMac intel and a PowerBook G4 - 400 Ti. They both have Airport cards. I understand that they will "talk" to each other with out benefit of a router. I would like to know how I can set this up. I have gone through the setup procedures endlessly and, although I did manage to get the IMac to see the PB once, and I don't know how it happened, I have not been able to do it again. There was an icon on my IMac desktop that I could drag stuff to and it would transfer. I'm quite confident its a simple procedure that I, in my stupidity, cannot fathom. When I try to set up a network I get an error message saying : "There was an error joining the Airport Network". Could it be a "slave/master" relationship between the two computers? With a proper setup will the flow of info be two way or one way? Are the two computers or systems incompatible? You help will be deeply appreciated!

Any computer that has an Airport Card, or Wireless
Card (PC) will recognise any network that they are in
range of by and with the use of a ROUTER, thus
    completeing the 2 way communication.
There are several different ways to connect and
confiqure a network, these different ways can be and
can get confusing without the paperwork on the step
    by step set-up.

Actually none of the Airport cards require a Wireless base station (acting as a router/access point) to work. Airport supports ad-hoc wireless mode (computer-to-computer mode, in Apple lingo), which allows two or more wireless-enabled computers to be connected to each other WITHOUT the use of base station. Search for "computer-to-computer" in the support knowledge base.

  • How do I connect Epson TX550W wirelessly to Airport network?

I have an Airport Express network connecting an MBP (10.6.3) and an iMac G5 (10.5.11) to a satellite modem. I want to introduce an Epson TX550W fully wirelessly, so that scanning is enabled and one computer doesn't need to rely on the other being up.
The printer/scanner worked when the MBP was connected by Airport (used as a single node) which plugged into a switch along with the printer and iMac. I can't fathom the directions to make the printer wireless only.

I found when I chased through the problem help something which wasn't in the set-up i.e. go to the printer and login to the airport network via the setup menu. Once I worked out how to enter a password connection was fine.
Print/scan to my MBP under 10.6.4 is good. On the iMac G5 with 10.5.8 the printer is recognised as being part of the network, but I can't actually use it. I need to spend time looking at that when I can. Maybe your network hint will work there.

  • Connecting two printers one IMAC

Is it possible to connect two printers to an IMac ?
One is a HP printer, fax, scanner and the other ia a canon printer only.
Currently, the Canon is connected via USB, and working fine, and I can print from my laptop over my wireless network.
What would happen if I plug in the HP in another USB port, will it conflict ? or just switch back and forth depending on which printer I want to use, even over the wireless network.
    Thanks

I have 3 connected, no problems whatsoever, you can hook up as many as you would like.

  • Connect two macs wirelessly

How to connect two mac wirelessly?
I tried creating a network, but after that, I can't connect the internet.

If each Mac can get on the Internet, without re-wiring, your network is already in place.
Do not create a Network. If you did, you will need to tear that down before proceeding.
Enable File Sharing on each Mac, NOT Internet Sharing.

Can I connect two apple tv on same network and same apple ID at a time ?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Yes you can do all that without needing to keep plugging things in and out. You will still need to manually turn on the receiver and turn down the volume from the tv though.

  • Connecting Two Mac minis to my network...

I finally decided to take the PC off-line for good. I purchased another Mac mini, so I'll be having both of those connected to my AirPort network.
I also have SharePoints installed on my Mini, and will install it on my new mac when it gets here.
My question. I know you can't share files over the network within each computer's home folder. I was to believe that with SharePoints I can share the files within home folders of each computer.
Basically, I want to be able to share the contents of the Documents, Pictures, and Music folders for each computer. All my music files, for instance, will be stored on one mini, and I'd like to be able to have access to those folders when I'm on my other mini, and vice versa.
As long as I can drag and drop files from the home folder on each computer, I will be happy.
Apple should send me a Christmas gift. Two 40GB iPods, two minis, one 20" ACD, AEBS, mighty mice, wireless keyboards... the list goes on. I've spent much more than I ever imagined making the "switch," but it was well worth it.
When the new Intel Macs come out, I'll drop one of these mini's downstairs, and extend my network with an AirPort Express. A mac in every room, I say!

Thanks Henry. Great! That is what I wanted to hear.
    ## EDIT ##
I just went to the Sharepoints site, and read this, which I don't think I like...
"*Caution: SharePoints only modifies the permissions on the directory that is shared. All directories residing within the shared directory retain their original permissions.*"
If this means what I think it does, it means that if I share my Home>Music folder, I do not have access to other folders within Music, like all the artists folders.
If all those other folders within Music keep their original permissions, is it true I won't be able to access them, but just the parent folder?
I'd like to have access to any file on either machine, whithout having to set 1000 sharepoints:(

  • Connecting Windows Mobile 5 to Airport Network

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to do it? I have a windows mobile 5 PDA, which I am trying to connect to my home Airport Network(it is running on WPA2 Personal Security). I have spent many hours trying to configure it without any luck. I am totally stuck with configurations and security settings for the Win 5.0 device... if only windows was OS was made by Apple!
    PB g4 15''   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Hi craiglud,
Thanks for your suggestion. I have not even got to that stage yet I am afraid.
When I am trying to connect to my Airport network – I get a message (on my PDA) “please enter the network key” however, when I am trying to enter a password which I set up for my home network – it does not eat it – says incorrect. I set it up with a password not with a hexadecimal key, it says on my Apple Airport Config utility that the hexadecimal key has to be 64 characters long, however, the PDA says it cannot be that long.
Can you tell me which settings did you enter for your Win Mobile device? Especially in the “Configure Network Authentication” panel there are several lines: “Authentication”, “Data Encryption”, and then the “key is automatically provided”.
What really annoys me is that my PDA (iPAQ) came without any information on how to configure the wireless network!
Thanks in advance – and I am glad it is working with you!
If I ever manage to set it up I am going to post a HOWTO so that others can work through it.

  • Can you hook two printers to the airport extreme

Can I hook up multiple printers to any of the airport devices?  the middle one has more than one port - one for printer and one for hard drive.  Can I put a printer in each port?

Hi - you can connect mutiple USB printers via a USB hub - you can also connect multiple printers to the ethernet ports on an Extreme or Time Capsule - you can do the same with an Express with an ethernet switch - you can also do it wirelessly

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • Connecting Two WRV200s Wirelessly?

Due to layout of the house and lack of wire access, need to connect two WRV200's wirelessly. One will be connected to my cable modem and the other will need to provide additional coverage but act as an access point to the net. Can someone tell me how I go about doing this?

Not at all. The WRV200 requires a wired internet connection. To extend wireless coverage you need a repeater. With second WRV200 you have to connect them with a cable to make some use of them. If it is not possible to get a cable connection inside the house consider going outside of the house. Maybe that works better...

  • Will a desktop connected to a wireless router via network cable be able to use a wireless printer?

My computer is a Dell runing XP home edition. This computer is connected via a network cable to the wireless router.
My deskjet 4580 printer is connected to the wireless router network and printing and scanning via wireless network with a laptop that is connected to the network wireless.
Now I want to print and scan using the desktop computer also. Should I install the wireless driver for the printer? Do I need to connect the printer with USB cable with my desktop computer?
Please help.  I do not want to disturb the laptop that can print and scan wirelessly with the printer.
    Thanks.

if the printer is connected to the router wired, then the router is the hub, so you should just need to install the driver for the printer in the machine that is not working.
If you install the full feature driver to the printer on the computer you want to print via wired to the router to the printer that should work. Run this too:

  • Can't connect Canon MP560 wirelessly using Airport Extreme with MacBook Pro

My Canon MP560 is failing to connect to the access point.  It recognizes the access point/network I would like to connect to but when I enter in my password it fails to connect and tells me to check access point settings.  I used this exact same printer but different router in my old house and everything worked well!  I'm thinking this is a Mac thing that I can't seem to figure out.  I have the lastest Canon driver updates for Mac and use 10.6.8 software on my Macbook Pro.
This is how the printer instructs me on the panel.
    a. Select Wireless LAN setup
    b. Select Easy Settings
    c. Select Access Point
    d. Enter Password
    e. Fails to connect..........
    Please help.

    Hi Tesserax,
i have the same issue as mountie30 with the MP560 but it's not working
    i have a airport express.
    i was following your instructions:
''To get to this feature within the AirPort Utility, go to the utility's menu bar and first choose Base Station, and then, Add Wireless Clients...''
the problem is, base station is in light gray and i can't click on it.
i re-plugged my printer into my imac so it detects it again. (it still says printer offline in settings)
i have no clue what to do.

  • Connecting Epson printers wirelessly to BT home hu...

    Greetings
    New to this forum.
I bought an Epson printer SX445W last April and tried to use it wirelessly. All went well for about three days, then the printer stopped communicating. Epson said it was the fault of the hub / router. I re-installed the printer, and it worked again, then stopped after two / three days. Eventually after much arguing with BT and Epson, I gave it up, and only used the printer with my desktop.
Recently I bought an additional printer, an Epson WF 3010 and had exactly the same problems. It works fine for a few days, then stops communicating. I've searched this forum and found many such problems, but only a few solutions, and those have not been relevant to my situation.
I would welcome some help with this
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I cannot see anything specific to that printer that would cause it to keep disconnecting.
The only two things which normally cause problems are:-
Wireless interference, or the home hub smart wireless changing channels, you are already looking into that.
Printer IP address changing due to the renewing of the DHCP lease.
This can be overcome by manually setting the printer to a fixed IP address, as I have described
    here.
    Important - help with printers
Looking at your printer manual, this can be done from the front panel.
See the text in bold, copied from this link.
    http://support.epson-europe.com/onlineguides/en/wp3010_nwg/html/setpn_3.htm
    IP address allocation setting:
Normally, the broadband router or access point will automatically allocate an IP address to the printer using the DHCP function. If your router (or access point) DHCP function is on, set the TCP/IP setting so that the printer acquires an IP address automatically.
To allocate a unique IP address to the printer, select manual setting, and enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
    DNS server setting:
To specify the DNS server address, select the manual setting, and enter the addresses for the primary DNS server and secondary DNS server.
