Connecting two wired computers to Airport

I have an eMac that has been connected to my Airport Extreme by a wire (I THINK because it doesn't have an Airport card?) and we also have an iMac that has a wireless connection to the same Airport. Now we're adding a third computer to the mix --- another eMac with OS 10.3. When I tried to get a connection on this newest eMac, it didn't detect the airport. First of all, my problem may be that this computer doesn't have an Airport card -- how do I tell? (We just bought this used.) Second, if there's no card, can I connect it with a wire if the ethernet port on the Airport is aleady being used by the first computer? Is there some kind of plug or something that can be added? If not, what are my options to connect this 3rd computer? Would I need an additional router or would installing an Airport card be easier/cheaper? Any help would be great appreciated -- I'm a little out of my depth here

First of all, my problem may be that this computer doesn't have an Airport card -- how do I tell?
Run System Profiler to see if it contains any information on AirPort.
Second, if there's no card, can I connect it with a wire if the ethernet port on the Airport is aleady being used by the first computer?
Yes. You will need to connect an Ethernet switch or Ethernet hub to the LAN port on the AirPort Extreme Base station (AEBS).

  • Connection to wired computers through Airport

I have a wired network in my house with a Linksys firewall/router. I just added an Airport Extreme, in order to be able to also have wireless access for a couple MacBook Pros.
The setup of the Airport Extreme and connection to the MBPs appeared to go without issues. However, when I'm connected wirelessly and I go to Finder, I can't see my wired Mac Pro listed under the network choices. I can connect to the Internet, see networked printers, etc., all without any problems - it's just the wired computer that isn't visible any more.
    Any thoughts?

Sorry for the silly question - the default setup apparently had DCHP enabled, rather than passing the router's addresses through. This appears to have messed up the system and prevented me from seeing other computers.
The problem went away as soon as I turned off Connection Sharing.

I want to add a Linksys E1000, to a Chinese made trenda modem/router already connecting a network.
Because I find it easier to set up port forwarding, dyn dns, on Linksys than the present Trenda modem/router  ,which is poorly  documented & not supported from china

  • Using Airport Express as a remote WDS station to connect two wired LANs

I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to a cable modem that gives internet access to both wired and wireless clients. I would like to wirelessly connect this base station to an airport express in a nearby building that also has a wired network so that both wired networks look like one big network. I figured that I would have to use WDS (using the Extreme as the main and the Express as the remote). I've followed all of the directions, but I'm not sure what the setting for Connection Sharing should be on the Express. Technically I am sharing the connection, but isn't the Extreme going to be doing all of the DHCP/NAT/etc.? So my question is, for this configuration what setting should I be using for Connection Sharing on the Extreme: Share a public IP address or Off (Bridge Mode)?

So my question is, for this configuration what setting should I be using for Connection Sharing on the Extreme: Share a public IP address or Off (Bridge Mode)?
"Off (Bridge Mode)" With this setting the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will pass-thru the NAT & DHCP services of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). That way all clients connected to either network will be on the same subnet.

  • Connecting two printers wirelessly to Airport network?

    Hi,
I currently have a working wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router BEFW11S4 - which I believe is 802.11b - that connects 2-4 laptops at any point in time.
I just purchased the new Airport Extreme 54 mbp Base Station. I would like to
    1. Set up the Airport network.
    2. Put our two printers on the network and print wirelessly.
The printers are on are far away (1st floor) from the cable internet access point (2nd floor) so USB connection is not an option.
    I have two questions:
    1. Would it be better/simpler to purchase a print server to connect to my Airport network and make the two printers available for wireless printing?
    2. Is it possible to connect ("bridge") the two wireless routers and then place one router close to the printers and connect via USB. If yes, should the configuration be Airport to Linksys or Linksys to Airport?
If there are any more simple/smart solutions than the options I came up with - they will be much appreciated. Thanks for reading this long question!

Complex question that I don't think I can answer all of...
Airport Extreme Base Station - can connect only one USB printer - no hub permitted.
Print Servers (other than Extreme/Express) - work great for postscript printers, but are problematic with non-postscript printers. Printing to print servers uses "standard" protocols. In OS X, the "standard" protocols are provided by CUPS, so they need cups-capable drivers on OS X. Brother is the Only non-postscript printer manufacturer so far to provide CUPS drivers. Many non-postscript printers can be made to work with third-party drivers (Gimp-Print is one of these), but most people are unsatisfied with print quality (if you want to print photos for example).
I think wireless bridging will work with the Airport BS in the "receiving side" only -- but I haven't tried that.
For more help on the printers/network printing, need to know the printer models.
    Hope this gets you started.

  • Connnecting two wired devices to airport express

I am currently using an airport express to connect a stereo and a Tivo box. Its configured as a remote base station.
Can I hook another device (a stereo RX with networking caps.) using a switch or hub?
Or do I HAVE to use a wired router?
Looks like wireless ethernet ports are kinda pricey (Not sure why Yamaha did not provide for a USB wireless adaptor on their $1700 RX.)

    Yes that should work.

  • How do I connect two apple compuiters

I would like to connect two apple computers together - how can I do it.

And take 4x longer if not worse? and WHY and what is this for?
Want to make one client and the other the server? Heck, how about old Fibre interconnect? can't go out and buy an XRAID box but that would.
Do you want to use XSAN?
Xsan is a powerful and scalable solution for storage consolidation. Now everyone in your organization can have fast, concurrent access to terabytes of centralized data. Built into OS X, Xsan allows any Mac with a Thunderbolt to Fibre Channel adapter to access an Xsan volume. OS X Server includes the Xsan Admin application for hosting and configuring Xsan volumes.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/
Xsan is Apple Inc.'s storage area network (SAN) or clustered file system for Mac OS X. Xsan enables multiple Mac desktop and Xserve systems to access shared block storage over a Fibre Channel network. With the Xsan file system installed, these computers can read and write to the same storage volume at the same time. Xsan is a complete SAN solution that includes the metadata controller software, the file system client software, and integrated setup, management and monitoring tools.
Xsan has all the normal features to be expected in an enterprise shared disk file system, including support for large files and file systems, multiple mounted file systems, meta data controller failover for fault tolerance, support for multiple operating systems, etc.
    Interoperability
Xsan is based on the StorNext File System.[2] The StorNext File System and the Xsan file system share the same file system layout and the same protocol when talking to the meta data server. They also seem to share a common code base or very close development based on the new features developed for both file systems.
The Xsan website claims complete interoperability[3] with the Quantum Corporation StorNext File System: "And because Xsan is completely interoperable with Quantum’s StorNext File System, you can even provide clients on Windows, Linux, and other UNIX platforms with direct Fibre Channel block-level access to the data in your Xsan-managed storage pool."[4]
Quantum Corporation claims "Complete interoperability with Apple’s Xsan and Promise RAID and Allows Xsan and Xserve RAID to support AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Red Hat Linux, SuSE Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows clients, including support for 64 Bit Windows and Windows Vista."[5]

Hi, i have two mac minis which i am trying to connect to the internet via airport express to a modem. No problems with one of them, very reliable but i can't get the other to connect. It staes there is no ip address . This is when using the "configure ipv4 using dhcp" When i tried manually and copied the same address it appeared to work except it said that another computer was using that i.p address. How is your Express configured? In AirPort Utility select the Express and click "Manual Setup". In the Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, "Connection Sharing" should probably be set to "Share a public IP address". As you mention, each of your Macs should be set with "Configure IPv4" to "Using DHCP".
If all those settings look good, you might try resetting your connection settings on the problematic Mac using the steps listed in this message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.

  • I have both TimeCapsule and Airport, and run two mac computers in the house on the one network. The airport often can not be found, and the signal is incredibly weak unless in the same room as the modem. Previously our signal was strong and effective.

The signal has been strong and effective previously and as far as i'm aware that nothing else in the house has changed. We have two apple computers, appletv, an ipad, 2 iphones, time capsule, and airport all running off the same network. If there is product, a configuration or program we can get to help diagnose and or solve any connectivity issue that would be awesome

The  Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy.

  • Connecting computers via Airport Express

I have a problem that I've been trying to solve, but so far nothing has worked.
I have three Macs, 2 G4 PowerBooks and an iMac (Core 2 Duo) which are all connected via an Airport Express. All of the computers can access the net and my printer just fine. The iMac can connect to both of the G4s, and one of the G4s can connect to both the iMac and the other G4. The problem is that one of the G4s can only connect to the other G4, not the iMac. It's as though the iMac does not exist for it's purposes. Yet I can connect to that G4 from the iMac, just not the other way around.
Any clues as to a fix for this would be greatly appreciated.

That is what you want to select.
You jumped into the middle of this thread. What
    problem do you have?
More to the point - what is YOUR problem...I think your response was a little rude...
One who has common sense can see what issue I am having simply by looking at the subject of the original post - and reading my entire post.
For your benefit, the subject is: Problems Connecting Two Computers to Cable Modem via AirPort Express.
If you read my post again, you will see that after following the advice given by Rj, I am still having problems. I will not re-post my question. Simply restating things in this post has been a waste of time.

Do I need to have Airport Express to connect to other computers on our homer network?

Not necessarily. You could use the "Create Network" feature of your MBP's built-in AirPort card to provide an Ad-hoc wireless network for local wireless-capable computers to connect to.

  • Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.

Trying to connect my wired PC to the wireless airport express via the wireless router.  TP-link wired/wireless router.  Ultimate goal is to send music from iTunes on PC to wireless router, then to airport, then to reciever.  The amber light is blinking.  Thanks in advance for the help!

If I'm understanding right your need and your computer has wired access to your network/router, all you have to do is give your AX wireless or wired access to your network too.
Wired should be easier.  Just use a network cable to connect to the router.  Power up the AX and look for it on AirPort Utility, do so without changing any of your computer settings.  If it's visible, then on iTunes your AX should be visible on the AirPlay icon at the bottom-right corner.
If you want to connect your AX to your router wirelessly I would suggest to reset your AX settings by pressing and holding for a few secs the reset button next to all the ports.  Once it is reset, using your computer try to look for the wireless network it'll be creating, it should be something like Apple Network 4341eb.  Join that network and, using the AirPort Utility, configure your AX as a network client.  Go to Wireless > Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network.
Select your router wireless network from the drop-down menu, select the appropriate security and type in your password.  Click update.
It'll restart and automatically join your network.  Have your computer join back your router network and, again, in iTunes bottom right you should be able to see the AX speakers.
Let me know if this worked.
