Connecting Two WRV200s Wirelessly?

Due to layout of the house and lack of wire access, need to connect two WRV200's wirelessly. One will be connected to my cable modem and the other will need to provide additional coverage but act as an access point to the net. Can someone tell me how I go about doing this?

Not at all. The WRV200 requires a wired internet connection. To extend wireless coverage you need a repeater. With second WRV200 you have to connect them with a cable to make some use of them. If it is not possible to get a cable connection inside the house consider going outside of the house. Maybe that works better...

How to connect two mac wirelessly?
I tried creating a network, but after that, I can't connect the internet.

If each Mac can get on the Internet, without re-wiring, your network is already in place.
Do not create a Network. If you did, you will need to tear that down before proceeding.
Enable File Sharing on each Mac, NOT Internet Sharing.

  • Connecting two WRV200's to share same wireless and wired network

I am looking at purchasing a second WRV200.  I want to have both wired together on the same network along with having them include the wireless on both to the same network. i.e. having two wired locations and two wireless AP's to get on to the one network.
Is there a way to configure two WRV200's to do this?
    Regards...

Yes. You can use the access point inside the WRV200 bypassing all the router functions. You configure the second WRV with a free LAN IP address inside your main LAN (e.g. 192.168.1.2 if 192.168.1.1 is your main router). You disable the DHCP server on the second WRV. Then you wire a numbered LAN port of the second WRV to your existing LAN. Do not use the internet port of the second WRV. Now you only use the wireless access point and the switch inside the WRV.
To create a single wireless roaming network you set up the wireless on both WRVs with identical wireless settings (SSID, wireless security, keys, etc.) The only difference should be in the allocation of channels. They should not use the same channel to avoid interference.

  • Connect two routers-wireless

Hello, I am looking around the forums and can't find and i'd like to know next:
I have two routers Linksys (wrv200 and wrt110). One on one side of the house, the other will be at the other side od the house. Questions:
    - Is it possible to wirelessly connect second to frist
    - Second willl broadcast the same SSID (wireless and other settings) as the first and will have the function of covering the signal on the other side of the house and outside, where the first virtually could not
    - Which one of these two routerja recommend as the first (connect to a modem)
    - What is all need to set athe first and second routerj
    Thanks for help.

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • Connecting two printers wirelessly to Airport network?

    Hi,
I currently have a working wireless network with the Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router BEFW11S4 - which I believe is 802.11b - that connects 2-4 laptops at any point in time.
I just purchased the new Airport Extreme 54 mbp Base Station. I would like to
    1. Set up the Airport network.
    2. Put our two printers on the network and print wirelessly.
The printers are on are far away (1st floor) from the cable internet access point (2nd floor) so USB connection is not an option.
    I have two questions:
    1. Would it be better/simpler to purchase a print server to connect to my Airport network and make the two printers available for wireless printing?
    2. Is it possible to connect ("bridge") the two wireless routers and then place one router close to the printers and connect via USB. If yes, should the configuration be Airport to Linksys or Linksys to Airport?
If there are any more simple/smart solutions than the options I came up with - they will be much appreciated. Thanks for reading this long question!
    - amit
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Complex question that I don't think I can answer all of...
Airport Extreme Base Station - can connect only one USB printer - no hub permitted.
Print Servers (other than Extreme/Express) - work great for postscript printers, but are problematic with non-postscript printers. Printing to print servers uses "standard" protocols. In OS X, the "standard" protocols are provided by CUPS, so they need cups-capable drivers on OS X. Brother is the Only non-postscript printer manufacturer so far to provide CUPS drivers. Many non-postscript printers can be made to work with third-party drivers (Gimp-Print is one of these), but most people are unsatisfied with print quality (if you want to print photos for example).
I think wireless bridging will work with the Airport BS in the "receiving side" only -- but I haven't tried that.
For more help on the printers/network printing, need to know the printer models.
    Hope this gets you started.

  • Connecting two computers, wirelessly, using Airport?

I have a IMac intel and a PowerBook G4 - 400 Ti. They both have Airport cards. I understand that they will "talk" to each other with out benefit of a router. I would like to know how I can set this up. I have gone through the setup procedures endlessly and, although I did manage to get the IMac to see the PB once, and I don't know how it happened, I have not been able to do it again. There was an icon on my IMac desktop that I could drag stuff to and it would transfer. I'm quite confident its a simple procedure that I, in my stupidity, cannot fathom. When I try to set up a network I get an error message saying : "There was an error joining the Airport Network". Could it be a "slave/master" relationship between the two computers? With a proper setup will the flow of info be two way or one way? Are the two computers or systems incompatible? You help will be deeply appreciated!

There are several different ways to connect and

Actually none of the Airport cards require a Wireless base station (acting as a router/access point) to work. Airport supports ad-hoc wireless mode (computer-to-computer mode, in Apple lingo), which allows two or more wireless-enabled computers to be connected to each other WITHOUT the use of base station. Search for "computer-to-computer" in the support knowledge base.

  • Connect two routers wirelessely

I have two routers SRX 200  and WRT300N and want to connect them wirelessly. First of all would it be possible to do that and 2nd will it increase the coverage? I will appreciate for your response.

Both your routers have better signal/speed capabilities compared to the normal G routers. However, you can't connect them wirelessly.

  • Connect two AEBSn wirelessly or via Ethernet

I'm considering extending my wireless network by adding another AEBS or Time Capsule. It's about 60 feet (and three interior walls) between my current AEBS and our living room. If I get another router and put it in the living room, I can connect wirelessly between the two (but still through the walls) or run an ethernet cat6 cable to connect them. I have a PS3 and AppleTV in the living room. We also have macbooks that connect wirelessly.
If anything connected to the second router would have to share the single connection back to the primary router, would this slow everything down for them, similar to splitting a signal with a hub? Or are router's smarter than that? Just not sure how to proceed.
Thanks in advance. If this is already addressed somewhere, just point me to the appropriate topic. Did some searches, but hadn't found this specifically addressed.

Yes, they would both share the internet connection. I am using wildblue satellite, with a 1.5 mbps (~190K) download connection. I just didn't want the ps3/appleTV/3 Macbooks to bog the whole thing down, and thought if I had two wireless access points, and different things attached to different routers (and probably hardwire the appleTV and the PS3 to the router in the living room) that I would get fast connections everywhere.
Everything can connect at wireless n speed except the PS3. Directly connecting to the router would fix the wireless G speed bottleneck (if it actually exists).

  • Cannot connect two notebooks wirelessly

I am unable to connect my two MacBooks with one another. File sharing on both is enabled and previously were able to share. Right now, both computers can see a third computer, but not each other. I did type in the address indicated by sharing but recieved "Connection failed ... may not exist or it is unavailable ..." error.

Change the Wireless Channel to 11,Under Advance Wireless Settings tab, change the Beacon Interval to 75 and disable Block Anonymous Internet Requests under Security on the router.
On the computer, delete the preferred network and then, try to connect the wireless network.
If the above steps doesn't help then, upgrade the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from the scratch.

  • Connecting Two WRT54GS Wireless To A Cable Modem w/ TIVO, PS3, and Wii

Not real great in the networking thing. Upon reading I have found that you can only use WEP on a wireless adapter pluged into a TIVO (series 2 that is christmas gift to wife) to connect it to the internet, and as a concern of having to downgrade my entire network on my main router to WEP I looked for a solution. I read somewhere that if you cat5e from the TIVO into a WRT54GS you can then use the router to send wireless with WPA (or WPA2) to another WRT54GS that is cat5e  into the modem. To complicate things I am giving my kids a PS3 and a Wii for christmas and wanted to connect it to the same router as the TIVO.  My internet is Charter Comunications cable. The two routers are Versions 5 and 6. The TIVO is remote and I cannot get cat 5e cable to it so I need to use wireless. All distances are ok for wireless. The "main" router that is plugged into the cable modem is a ver.6 and is set in DHCP. All "gifts" are wrapped under the tree so I can't set those components before christmas. I would like to setup the routers to speed things along. I have a laptop (hardwired ) to the second router to set it up. Two other computers and a HP printer are connected to the "main" router. All computers are Windows XP -SP2.
    Questions:
    1. Can this be done with these components and keep security on the "Main" router maintained?
    2. Upon reading these boards it sounds like I should split my system into two seperate routers with the second one passing thru the main router. How would this be done? What are the settings? Reserve addresses for static in the main router to use in the second and run as one system? Remember I am not to good at the network thing... so be complete in the explaination.
    3. If I do things as indicated in question 2 will that leave my TIVO, PS3, and Wii open to attack to the internet? Any way to better secure?
    4. Any pointers as to how this really should be done would help. Any better ideas in setup??
    Thanks.......

Yep, I wanted to connect them wireless but it sounds like I cant without some issues.
Second choice: Cascade--  Connect routers by Cat 5e and make the second one a WEP that has the TIVO, PS3, and the Wii connected wireless to it. The main Router would have the computers and printer connected to it. The main router would be WPA (2) protected for a wireless laptop.
    Is the second choice possible??
Should the second router be with static IP's??  Is this the best way to do this with these types of items connected?
I think this will make two wireless systems but if I make the second one a DHCP enabled one then I think it might cause conflicts with a chance of both routers picking the same IP for a connected item. What is the best method for doing this and keeping some type of security??

  • Connect two WRT54Gs Wirelessly

    To whom it may concern,
I currently have 2 WRT54Gs that I want to connect wirelessly.
One router is connected to the modem which serves IP addresses to my hardwired and my wireless computers dynamically (used as a DHCP server for my local network).  At another point in my house, I have a TiVo and a PS2 that I would also like to hook up to the home network, but rather than purchasing wireless cards and attempting to get them set up with the encryption, my plan was to purchase a "Wirelss switch"  as an "Access point" that could hook to my original router wirelessly and hook these devices (and other devices) to it physically using network cables.
I thought I needed an access point so I traveled down to my local Staples and saw that they had sold out of access points.  I also noticed that WRT54Gs doubled as access points and believe it or not were $20 cheaper than the one port Access point.  Thinking this would be easy to set up, I purchased the second WRT54G and set on my way.
Needless to say, I'm having a bit of trouble getting the second router to pick up the wireless network of the first.  I've Googled the issue and the closest I came is to hardwiring one router to the next and turning off DHCP server for the new one.  That would completely defeat the purpose of doing this wirelessly.
Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Interesting that this thread was moved to the Routers forum.  The meat of the question was really how to get a WRT54G to perform a wireless bridge to another since the packaging on the box implies that it functions as a Wireless Access Point.  Either way, I think my answer is that the Linksys Firmware for a WRT54G does not include the wireless bridge capabilities that it's WAP brothers have.
In order to get this to work, I'll need to void warranties and install 3rd party software that will allow the router to act as a wireless client of the first.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

  • Can I connect my Mac to two separate wireless networks at the same time?

Need some assistance with some advanced wireless networking please....
Upstairs I have a D-link wireless router connected to the internet and wired to a couple of PCs. Downstairs I have a minimac linked to my hifi via an airport express. I have bought a D-Link DWL-G122 usb wifi dongle.
So I want the mini mac to connect to the airport express on one wireless network (strong signal) and to be able to connect to the internet on another network (weak signal) via the usb wifi /router.
But the airport software and the d-link driver seem to conflict and both try to take control of the two wireless devices.
Is there any way round this to be able to run one mac with two wireless network devices at the same time?
    Thanks

While those with more experience may be able to correct me, I'm pretty sure that you can only connect to one wireless network at a time with your Mac Mini, unless D-Link provides their own proprietary software that bypasses the computer's Airport settings.
Using the AirPort hardware you can only connect to a single wireless network at any given time. However in this situation the 2 attempted connections are via USB and AirPort. Therefore this requires nothing special of the AirPort drivers or settings.
It does require that the Mac OS and applications have the capability to use either network connection (USB or AirPort) depending on what data they are trying to get. In general I understand how it is theoretically possible but I have no idea if you can configure OS X to do it.
...I believe one of the options when setting up the Airport Extreme Base Station is that you can extend a wireless network already in place.
True but the D-Link is not compatible with Apple's WDS therefore this is not possible in this situation.
If you have a newer Airport Extreme Base Station with a USB port on it...
FYI, every AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has a USB port.
BTW, birky has indicated that he/she is using an AirPort Express (AX) not an AEBS.
