Connecting unknown, unfamiliar projectors and TVs to MBP

Connecting unknown, unfamiliar projectors and TVs to MBP
Hi:
I am going on a business trip to Europe and will be connecting my MBP to unknown projectors and/or TVs.
Which cables should I take for the "just in case" scenario?
Thanks for your help.

This forum is for the Mac Pro, the desktop, no the MacBook Pro, the laptop. You might have better luck in that forum.
That being said, I would make sure you have a DVI cable, a VGA cable, and the DVI->VGA adaptor that came with the MBP. I personally would also bring/buy the DVI->Video adaptor (P/N: M9267G/A) along with a s-video cable and composite video cable (standard RCA cable, usually yellow) just in case. Also, I would test all your cables before you go to make sure they work. Nothing is worse than getting there and then realizing that you went through all the trouble to lug around a cable and then find out it is faulty.
Generally any new projector will allow either a DVI or VGA connector, with DVI being the preferred choice. But there are still some old projectors out there that only accept s-video or composite or maybe their other inputs don't quite work right. Also, you might be forced to use a TV if you get there and find that the projector is broken or something and those other connections will come in very handy.
Probably a bit overkill. But I like to be prepared, especially if I'm going all the way to Europe to give a presentation. The extra cost/time is negligable compared to not having what you need.

  • Connecting home theater projector and monitor in kitchen

I just ordered a refurbished 2.0Ghz mac mini so I can use it as my home theater computer. I would like to connect it to my receiver's HDMI input so I can display the video on my projector. I also want to connect it to a monitor in my kitchen so I can use it on a daily basis for basic emailing, surfing, etc. It appears that I can connect the mini's mini DVI port with the included mini DVI port to DVI adapter and then attach a DVI to HDMI adapter which will in turn connect to my receiver's HDMI input. Another option is that I can purchase a mini DVI to HDMI cable and avoid the DVI to HDMI connector. Audio would be fed to the receiver from the optical digital output jack to the receiver's optical input.
In order to connect it to the monitor in my kitchen which has a DVI and VGA input, can I use the mini Display Port? I believe I can just attach a mini display port to DVI cable and attach to my monitor's DVI input? The run is about 25 feet. Will the mini mirror to my projector and monitor this way? Also how can I send the audio to both the receiver and the monitor in the second room. The monitor has a regular mini Jack audio input. Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I use the enclosed mini-DVI to DVI (D) adapter with a DVI (D) to HDMI cable and it works just fine. There is no DVI to HDMI converting the signals are compatible. And I am using an analog patch cable for the audio as you propose with the digital.
On the kitchen monitor, Apple makes both a mini-DisplayPort to DVI (D) adapter and a mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter. But you need to know what DVI input the monitor requires, the mini is DVI (D) only. If the monitor uses DVI (D) then you can use a DVI (D) to DVI (D) cable with the mini-DisplayPort to DVI (D) adapter. If you go with VGA, then a VGA to VGA cable with the mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter.
Audio for the kitchen is another story. The mini's audio port is either analog or digital. It cannot do both at once. There are USB audio dongles, but I do not think that the Mac is capable of doing both digital and analog audio at the same time, even out of different ports, but I do not know for sure.

  • Connecting wirelessly to projector and speakers.

I have my projector connected wirelessly to my ipad with Apple TV and Airport Express. I also have a JBL wireless speaker that I would like to connect wirelessly.  On the ipad I have to select either "projector" or "JBL speakers" using bluetooth.  Is there a way to connect to both?  Thanks.

Both the projector and speakers show up under airplay.  I have to select one - just wanted to know if I could use both.

  • RetinaDisplay MBP not displaying correctly connected to VGA Projector

I am not sure if this is a Mountain Lion issue or Retina MBP issue
    New MBP.
hooked it up to a VGA projector tonight ( Apple store folk told me to use the same minidisplayport adapter I used with my older MBP which did  fit the Thunderbolt port.
Monitor and Mac saw each other but my MBP did not project correct resolution or dimensions
MBP still seemed to think it was connected to my 27" monitor at home.
Is this an adapter issue? a MBP issue? a Mountain Lion issue
    Something was amiss
    Any ideas?

Doesn't work that way with the Retina display
    a)  I never had to select a resolution previously when connecting a VGA projector. My previous Mac auto adjusted its resolution
    b) The preference does not allow choices of resolution as in the past
Look at how differnt this preference is
If I chose Scaled I get a few choices of larger or smaler text.
There may be some options in the main menu bar which Ineed to look at when connecting a monitor ( based on some other posts elsewhere in this Apple discussion area.Dunno... I am sure I am overlookign something  but the old auto adjust is gone, I think

  • MBP Retina OS X Yosemite has distorted display when connected to Epson projector.  How do I fix this?

MBP Retina OS X Yosemite has distorted display when connected to Epson projector.  How do I fix this?

    Hello ATLawson,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the display, after connecting to a projector, does not have the image quality you would expect. There may be a few different troubleshooting steps I would recommend in this situation. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the information in the attached article.

  • MBP freezes when connected to VGA projector

My MacBook Pro (15" 2.4Ghz SR, 4Gb) freezes when connected to a VGA projector, doesn't matter whether the DVI-VGA adapter is connected to cable first or last. Boot time while connected to the projector is also inordinately long. I have seen this happen a number of times specifically with other Santa Rosa MBPs.
I haven't called Apple yet on this and I suspect it will require a firmware update to fix; is this a known issue (and is it known to apple?)
    thanks

Just to update this thread with what I've posted elsewhere:
On my machine this problem only happens if the computer has been put to sleep before being connected to a projector. That is, put to sleep after being booted but before connection to the computer. It can be connected after booting without sleep. Once it has been successfully connected to a projector, it can be disconnected, put to sleep, awakened and reconnected with no problem.
I think that this "first sleep after boot" issue is what makes the occurrence of this problem so variable.
Some people just leave their computer on for long periods, only putting it to sleep when not using it. If they connected to a projector before putting it to sleep the first time they wouldn't see this problem.

Thank you for the answer, I suppose the main thrust of my enquiry is to find out if 65 MBits is my ATV theoretical limit of reception.  If that is the case then I am happy as a Pig in Mud
I may have allowed myself to become a victim by listening to Fanbois posting elsewhere who always seem to go one better than everyone else. Now I have learnt two things Today; 65Mbit/s = Good enough and only read the apple forums.
    Many Thanks

  • HT4437 I have a Macbook Air, an iPad3, and Apple TV.  I want to be able to use the iPad3 for training through the Macbook Air which is connected to a projector.  Any ideas?

I would like to be able to show my iPad3 screen through the Macbook Air that is connected to a projector.  I attended an Apple Training presentation and the presenter was using this set up-how do I get it set up correctly?  I also recently purchase Apple TV because the presenter said that she was using this device with the Air and the iPad.

If you are trying to connect the iPad to the Macbook, then try this app: http://www.reflectionapp.com/ The iPad also supports connecting straight to the Apple TV, so you could try it that way too.
          Hope this helps!

  • When i tried to hook my macbook pro up to a projector to show a dvd, the screen on the computer and projector screen went black as if it were trying to connect. yet it didn't show up. The dvd played when it wasn't connected to the projector. any ideas?

When I tried to hook up my macbook pro to a projector and play a dvd, the dvd wouldn't work. I would only get an error message. The dvd worked when it wasn't connected to the projector but doesn't work when it's connected. It just shows a blank screen as if it's trying to connect. Also, the connection works when I don't play the dvd. Any ideas?

    Hey there lynmrigg,
It sounds like have an HDMI to VGA adapter connecting your MacBook Pro and your projector but the screen on your computer goes black and no image appears on the projector. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article to help resolve or isolate the issue here, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

If you want to solve your problems, unjailbreak. And don't do it again, because jailbreaking causes problems as you read about in that article. You can try Recovery Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

  • Connecting DVI Cinema Display and VGA Projector from Minidisplay Port

    Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to get my mid 2011 Mac Mini to send a signal from my MiniDisplay Port to a vga splitter which works fine. My biggest thing is that when I connect my inFocus IN112 VGA Projector the screen shows up from my mac but to connect my Cinema Display it takes VGA so I had to go from the VGA Splitter on one side and use a vga to dvi adapter and my cinema display shows blank? Help Me Please!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I already have a converter on the end of the VGA Splitter to go to the Cinema. The reason I don't use the hdmi to dvi is because with the minidisplay port using vga to the projector and the hdmi going to dvi to the Cinema it makes the projector screen very rough and pixely

  • Will my mac mini connect to a display and a projector at the same time.

I want to be able to use my LCD display while at the same time use a projector for slide presentations. Is there some adapter that will run off of the USB connector and connect to the projector cable (15 pin connector)? Thank you for suggestions.

Yes.  Check http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go They have several solutions, one of which may work with your machine.
