Connecting & Using G3 iBook With MacBook Pro

I am planning to buy a MacBookPro shortly when I am in the States. Will I be able to connect to my iBook G3 on 10.3.9 (640mb) both to transfer files and to use the iBook as an external hard-drive (bootable)?
If so, do I need anything more than the connecting cable and maybe some software like SuperDuper?
Again, the question that is probably unanswerable -- can I buy a refurbished MacBook Pro or are they just recycled lemons? My wallet needs the price tag, my head doesn't need more problems.

You'll be able to connect your iBook although it will NOT be bootable. The Mac OS X version on Intel systems is different to that of the PowerPC systems.

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Can't connect Canon MP560 wirelessly using Airport Extreme with MacBook Pro

My Canon MP560 is failing to connect to the access point.  It recognizes the access point/network I would like to connect to but when I enter in my password it fails to connect and tells me to check access point settings.  I used this exact same printer but different router in my old house and everything worked well!  I'm thinking this is a Mac thing that I can't seem to figure out.  I have the lastest Canon driver updates for Mac and use 10.6.8 software on my Macbook Pro.
This is how the printer instructs me on the panel.
    a. Select Wireless LAN setup
    b. Select Easy Settings
    c. Select Access Point
    d. Enter Password
    e. Fails to connect..........
    Please help.

    Hi Tesserax,
i have the same issue as mountie30 with the MP560 but it's not working
    i have a airport express.
    i was following your instructions:
''To get to this feature within the AirPort Utility, go to the utility's menu bar and first choose Base Station, and then, Add Wireless Clients...''
the problem is, base station is in light gray and i can't click on it.
i re-plugged my printer into my imac so it detects it again. (it still says printer offline in settings)
i have no clue what to do.
    please help

  • Connecting HP Laserjet 1010HB with Macbook Pro via D-Link Network!?

    Good evening,
I have a MacBook Pro and I want to be able to print via WiFi.
The Printer is hosted by a Windows Computer via D-Link Router Network
My sister who has a Windows Laptop is able to print.
I read about Bonjour but this seems to be a software for windows computers
to print with a Networkprinter hosted by an Apple-PC.
    I need exactly the opposite.
    Host: Windows 7 (D-Link Router DIR-655)
    Me: OS X 10.6.7
I tried to use Shareport Utility but without success.
    Shareport doesn't show the Printer.
 > system settings > print and fax > + > doesn't work. What settings should I use? LPD, IPP, HP Jet direct socket.
And the driver: We got a HP Laserjet 1010HB -> HP Laserjet 1010, HP Laserjet 1010 v2 Gutenprint, HP Laserjet 1012, v2  1012 gutenprint.
How ever I don't know what to do.
    And I will certainly NOT buy any additional Airport thing of Apple or they can **** ***** ****** ** ***** **** and I will **** ***** **** ****
    Hope you can help me.
    cheers

Thanks for the feedback LilyLC. I too have gone through all of your steps and a host of others. Still with no luck. No problems at all with my Airport Express, but still no way to keep up a connection with my DIR-655 via WIFI N. I tried all of the steps with each firmware version too. I've given up at this point. I want the 2 months of my life back that I spent troubleshooting this mess. At least Apple could acknowledge this and say we are on it, and that it isn't only "in our heads."
    /begin rant/
I think that Apple needs to do some re-evaluating of their software release schedule/quality control. At this point I would rather wait and have them get it right then put out subpar updates and fall into the downward spiral pattern of "the rest of them". My confidence has been shaken and I've been a mac fan since the beginning. I just want Apple to split off the iPod/Phone/TV etc. into its own division and to get back on track with the Mac line starting now. We need this stuff to work to make a living and this takes a higher priority in my mind than new twiddle apps on the iPhone.
I do own two iPods and an iPhone but would chuck them in a river to get Leopard working solidly with the majors like Adobe, Extensis, Epson, as well as stable networking, syncing and backups. Apple really has their hands full at this point with a large list of bugs. I really wish them well but can't say I'm in the least bit happy as a consumer at this point. For the first time in a long time I feel sheepish when answering whether or not I'd recommend a Mac, and that hurts me deeply for some reason.

  • Connection between ASUS PB278Q with MacBook Pro

I'm trying to use a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable to connect my ASUS PB278Q display with my MacBook Pro (late 2008 model). However, I found that it doesn't work. I had used mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to connect my display and MBP, it's worked but only have up to 1080p resolution.
I have checked that the graphic card of my MBP can support up to 2560 x 1600 pixels and the ASUS PB278Q is up to 2560 x 1440 pixels.
Do you have any idea how I can connect my display and MBP, in order to get the maximum resolution?

This question should be posted in the iPhone forum, as you stated you believe its due to iOS5, which we do not handle here.

  • Trouble using external iSight with MacBook Pro (which has built in camera)

    Hey Jim,
Have a question for you. I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I also have a 23" Cinema Display, and a left over Firewire external iSight camera (which I used to love).
Frequently I "dock" my MBP with my 23". I either use the dual-screen between the two, or I close the lid on the MBP, let it go to sleep, then wake it back up with a BT keyboard or mouse, letting it go to a single-screen mode on only the 23" Cinema Display.
So, I'm trying to use my external Firewire iSight with my MBP, and I'm getting mixed results -- the best of which is where I am getting some video with regular, occasional freezes with the picture being split (like a v-hold problem on an old TV). After a pause it goes back to smooth video.
I guess primarily, I'm wanting to know what the world of two iSights (FW and built-in) look like, and can they work together? I cannot for the life of me get this FW iSight to work consistently, but I know it works perfectly in another G5 tower (which has no built-in camera).
    Any suggestions or guidance?

    Hello Exivus
... two iSights (FW and built-in) ... can they work together?
You can have two iSights connected at one time, but, as explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by only one application at a time. (my emphasis)
Different apps select between multiple connected cameras in different ways. For instance, iChat > Preferences... > Video settings can select which camera to use with the iChat app, but iMovie 6 uses a drop-down menu as shown in this picture:
The suggestions in How to Troubleshoot iSight should help you determine whether one of your iSights is causing trouble. I suggest you test each one separately and without your external display or other peripherals to rule out possible conflicts.
After you are certain that your iSights are working individually, test them when both are connected. After your system successfully passes these tests, you can add your external devices back one-by-one to be sure one of them is not causing the problem.

  • Using external iSight with MacBook Pro crashes iChat

I use my Macbook Pro in clamshell mode with an external display. I bought an external iSight so that I could use iChat AV. I have the appropriate adapter to convert the Firewire 400 cable to Firewire 800 which is compatible with my '09 MBP 17" (2.8GHz).
Every time I connect the iSight, iChat will launch, and then will crash (SPWoD). I can not recover unless I disconnect the iSight, at which point iChat is able to fully launch.
I tired changing both iChat and Photobooth to 32-bit mode (hint from another thread), but that did not help.
As a test, I connected the iSight to an iMac with both FW400 and FW800 and the iSight works perfectly with either connection. iChat AV then allows me to then select which camera I want to use in its preferences.
Both my Macbook Pro and the iMac are on OS X 10.6.2. iChat crashes regardless of if I am using the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode or not.
    TIA.

Sorry, I answered with my iPod tough. I guess it didn't translate the way I wanted it to.
    Here are my answers ...
    Thanks for that info, bryanus
Between this info and your latest response to Ralph, there are so many possibilities that I cannot yet identify the source of your problem. More troubleshooting is needed to identify the cause so we know what to fix.
Your used iSight may be causing the problem. Because it is easiest to troubleshoot, I suggest you test the external iSight next. The following will either eliminate your external iSight as the cause of your problem or let you know whether it will require professional service.
If the testing I suggest below shows that the problem is related to iChat ONLY, stop the testing I suggest and follow Ralph's expert suggestions for troubleshooting and correcting iChat.
Don't worry about the "clamshell mode" issues at this time. Until you get your external iSight working reliably with your MBP, keep the external display disconnected.
Additionally, to eliminate possible network problems as a contributor to your problem, when testing (internet) connected apps like iChat, use the same ethernet connection when you test both Macs. Even use the same ethernet cable (no wireless) connection to all Macs.
Also, to test problems with launching iChat, _disconnect both Macs from the network_ to see if iChat will launch properly with a connected external iSight but no internet or network connection.
You have already done some excellent testing, but you can use the additional suggestions from the following link (including other subject links on that page) to test the remaining user-correctable possibilities:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
Pay particular attention to *possible conflicts*, testing with more than one cable and/or adapter, and testing the external iSight on more than one Mac. If possible, it would be also good to use your same cable and FW Adapter to test your MBP's function with a different and known-good external iSight. If you have no other access to a working external iSight, your local Apple-Authorized Service Provider may be have one that he can use to check your MBP connection.
If your external iSight can connect reliably to other Macs, or if a different, known-working, external iSight also gives trouble on your MBP, the problem must be either in your MBP's physical Firewire connection port or in the software on your MBP.
Unless you find a fix while trying the above, we can offer suggestions for the particular problem(s) you identify based on your troubleshooting, so give as much detail as you can about your findings when you post back.

  • Using Multiple Monitors with MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Is there a way to connect 6 additional monitors to my MacBook Pro?

    Hi there,
I was wondering if you could help me out. I am trying to run 2 x 1900x1200 external displays (DELL ultrasharps 24") using my MBP. I have the Triplehead2go DP edition (just released in Q3 '09). I've downloaded the latest driver from the Matrox website, and I have the Matrox miniDP to DP adapter. I am using the DP male to male cables which came with the DELL monitors. Everything I have read has suggested that this set up is possible and supported by MAtrox. The trouble is every time I plug in the DP cable into the computer - MacOSX crashes (and hard!!! not even resolving when the cable is removed). I would very interested if anyone has successfully used the TH2G DP edition with the MBP (unibody) for this setup. Apple seems to think that the problem is with the device, not the software. MAtrox tells me they can't reproduce the problem and that I should have the device replaced (which I am arranging). Do you have any ideas/suggestions. I would appreciate your help.
    Cheers,
    Frustrated!

  • Can't connect to netgear wifi with macbook pro

I have a Netgear N900 router and although I can find the signal I cannot connect to the wifi.  Each time I clicked on it, it would fail to connect and say to move closer to the router.  However the router has already been upgraded to make the signal strong enough to reach my room.  I have tried restarting the router and it has not worked.  I have gone into the router through my browser and reserved an IP address and changed my network settings on my computer to "using DHCP with manual address" and entered the reserved IP address.  I restarted my computer but now my macbook pro says that it is connected but I can't connect to the internet when i open a browser.  I'm not sure if I'm not reserving the IP address correctly or if there is another solution to this problem.  If anyone has encountered this problem and found a solution that would be amazing.  I have been trying for a month now to fix this. Thanks!

  • Possible to use IR Modem with MacBook Pro?

I am a new MacBook Pro owner who travels frequently to a variety of locations.
I am interested to see if I can use a PSION Travel Modem (an IR Modem) as a backup for those instances where WiFi just isn't available.
(Believe me, I will travel to such locations.)
I have used this nifty modem ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004RKHF ) with my Palm in the past. I have done quite a bit of searching through Google & this forum, but have not found a specific Psion modem script or a generic IR Modem script to try.
Can anybody point me in a direction to get this working?
    Thanks,
    Brad

Apple has not included Infrared output on their Macs since 2001. You'd have to find a Mac compatible USB or ExpressCard 34 adapter for Infrared. I don't know if it is possible to reverse engineer the Infrared of the Front Row remote, but that's the only logical means I can think of making it work if it were possible.
I'd get a 56k modem, if you want an alternative to WiFi:
