Connecting via Ethernet - backing up wirelessly

I have placed an order for Time Capsule but I have been wandering....
Is it possible to connect to the Time Capsule via Ethernet for the Internet Connection, whilst the back up takes place over wireless? Or does it mean if I connect via Ethernet, the back up and Internet connection will be via Ethernet? What I am concerned with it Lag on the network (same applies too for Wireless) and would like wireless back up whilst connecting via Ethernet to the Net.

However, the print & scan window just allows me to click on 'add', but then eveything is greyed out and the printer is not displayed.
I was able to connect the printer without any problems to my Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows (Vista) systems and I'm used to having the least problems with Macs up to now.

ThanksFor you to "see" the printer in the Default view after you click the plus button to add, the printer would have to support an advertising protocol like Bonjour. For Linux and Vista, you would have added the printer by selecting a protocol and entering the IP address of the printer. You can do the same thing on the Mac. In Print & Scan, after you click the plus button to add, select the IP icon and then enter the IP address of the printer. Change the Protocol menu to HP Jetdirect-Socket (this is called RAW Port 9100 on the other OS's); leave the Queue name blank; change the Name to LaserJet 2100; leave the Location blank and select the supporting model name in the Use menu. Click to Add and then see if you can print.

Can't connect via ethernet after iBook wakes up from sleep
I'm running 10.4.0 on a 1.33 GHz G4 iBook. Since buying the computer in 2005, I've been connecting to the internet in various locations via AirPort, though I have hooked my iBook up to ethernet connections in the past and had no problems.
Recently I moved to a university where I must connect via ethernet, as the wireless network doesn't extend to the areas where I do most of my work. I bought a new cable. Much of the time, my connection is fine. But frequently I am unable to connect to the internet at all via ethernet, and I've noticed that it's always after I've woken the computer up from sleep. I've tried various ridiculous "kick the car and maybe it will start" techniques like unplugging the cable at both ends and waiting, restarting five or six times in a row, etc., and it starts connecting eventually, but I have NO idea why or why not. When I check my network preferences, I get the message "Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address [xxx.xxx.x.xxx]. You are connected to the Internet via Built-In Ethernet." But I'm not. What's going on here?Sorry, meant to indicate an IP address without giving the exact numbers, and it came up as an HTTP address. My network connections system preference panel indicates a normal IP address. (And it's not self-assigned.)

Out of the blue, my ITouch is unable to access my wireless network ONLY when my PC is on (the PC is connected via Ethernet cable, and has no wireless capabilities that I know of). What gives? When the PC is turned off, everything is totally fine. I\m stumped.
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
I suspect a problem with your router. Try changing the security. First use no security as a test.

- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable. The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great. The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks. How do I remedy this, please?
What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.

My Apple TV will not update to the latest software, dose anyone know what the problem is, I've reset, tried to do it wirelessly as well as while connected via Ethernet cable.. Both have resulted in the same message!! Update unsuccessful, current software version is 5.1 (5201) . I've rented a movie recently and does not appear in my movie list, but I have been charged for this movie, can someone help me out with these issues.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
If when you choose restore you get a message that the device cannot be found, download the file below

Then hold down the option key while choosing restore and select the downloaded file when prompted. -

I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users. -
Why does time capsule go missing from the network. The green light is lit at all times. I am unable to use the software the only thing I can do is power cycle time capsule, by unplugging and plugging the mains back in.
My time capsule is only a few weeks old, any ideas?

ThanksAn external drive is much more reliable.. the issue has to do with network connection and loss of something.. although I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly what. The computer is still connected, still works on internet but has actually lost the hard disk.. lost and cannot find it without a restart.
If you want to try a few changes it can help.
1. If you are connected by ethernet make sure wireless is off in the imac.. having only one network connection is better than two.
2. Redo the TC setup with all short names.. no spaces.. pure alphanumeric. Apple has these long names with spaces and characters like apostrophe by default but they are not a help.
3. If the TC is the main router then reduce the dhcp lease time.. make it 20min.. that keeps everything refreshed and up to date.
None of those fix it but they may help stretch out the interval. -
Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport
We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role. -
Time Capsule not work with appletalk printers connected via ethernet?
I have seen no definitive answers to this problem posted here or on support forum. Some have suggested (but Apple refuses to confirm) that Time Capsule does not support AppleTalk devices (particularly printers) connected via Ethernet to Time Capsule. Even the "Genius Bar" guys can't tell you for sure, but this is what they suspect also.
I am a 25 year Macintosh user. I have conducted numerous experiments on this problem. What follows is my analysis and work around.
I have found no way to connect AppleTalk printers to Time Capsule by an Ethernet network connected to the back of the Time Capsule. It just doesn't work. Forget all the posts about what to try. Especially forget about resetting your printer settings. Waste of time. This leads me to conclude that those who suspect that Time Capsule does not support AppleTalk printers connected on an Ethernet network are absolutely correct. It is a hardware or software deficiency. I do not know why Apple won't just publish this in their technical specs. It would save us users a lot of time and frustration.
Now the work around. The only thing that I have found that will work is to set up an Airport Extreme to extend the wireless network created with the Time Capsule. Plug your ethernet network into the Airport Extreme, NOT into the Time Capsule. I presume (but have not tested) that this works with an Airport Express as well. I did this with my old Airport Extreme that I had left over after buying my new Time Capsule. Now the printers show up again and print fine.
Please let me know what your results are if you try this.The problem is caused by an interaction between the Airport Extreme Update 2008-004 and the TC 7.3 firmware. I swapped out my TC for my AirPort Extreme (which sat on a shelf unused since I bought the TC). It has version 6.xx of the firmware. Immediately I could see my printer when I wirelessly connect with my MBPro and can print from it. I put the TC back and then did an Archive and Install of 7.5 on my MBPro. I did every software update except the Airport Extreme Update 2008-004. I could see my printer and print to it! After cloning my HD, I then applied the 2008-004 update to 7.5.5. That broke the wireless printing again! I tried TC firmware 7.3, 7.3.1, and 7.3.2 but not go. It is clear that my computer is trying to communicate with the printer (lots of flashing lights on my LAN switch) but no successful handshaking. I restored my hard drive from the clone and I now I can print again. Final word: if you want to print from a wireless computer connection to an AppleTalk printer connected to TC's LAN do not apply the 2008-004 update to your computer. Apple: please fix this problem.

APE only works when connected via ethernet
I have a new AirPort Extreme that I am trying to add to my existing network (an older APE base station and 2 Express) and no matter how I try to configure it, I can't get it to work without being connected with an ethernet cable (either to my MacBook Pro or to the other APE base station).
I also tried setting it up on its own with a new network and that wouldn't work either.
If it isn't plugged in, and I try to change the configuration, i get this error:
"AIRPORT UTILITY WAS UNABLE TO FIND YOUR BASE STATION AFTER RESTARTING.
The settings for this base station have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the base station. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again."
The amber light flashes, and it never shows up again. It doesn't matter if i unplug the APE, turn AirPort off and on, restart the utility, restart my mac... it won't ever show up unless I connect via ethernet, but as soon as i connect the ethernet cable, everything works fine.
Does this mean that there is something wrong with the APE, or is there something I'm doing wrong with my setup (I've tried the assisted setup and manual setup following the instructions in the "Designing Air Port Extreme 802.11n Networks" pdf)?Yes. It's just the one APE that is a problem. The rest of the network is fine.
If I connect the new APE to the older APE with an ethernet cable, I can see it in AirPort utility and use AirPort Disks connected to it, too; but as soon as I unplug the ethernet cable, it can't get back on to the network and it no longer shows up in AirPort utility. -
I have a Airport network at home with a Time capsule connected via ethernet cable to modem. Also the network is extended wirelessley with an Airport Extreme. I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme. Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?

Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.

IBook G4 Can't connect via Ethernet?
While we were away lightning took out several devices. Among them was the Airport Extreme Base Station and the cable modem. The modem has been replaced. I have an iMacG5 and an iBookG4 both running 10.4.11. The iMac can establish a connection via Ethernet (all this happened yesterday so I have yet to replace the Airport). The laptop apparently won't accept an IP address from the router/modem and won't connect to the internet.
I did see a message saying that my network settings had been changed by another application but don't know if this figures in the mix.

Airport extreme won't connect via Ethernet to BT homeHub v2.0

here's what I want to do:
1. Homehub is connected to the phoneline and will provide a b/g network for my iphone/xbox/laptop1
2. I want to connect my airport extreme to this (from what I can tell this must be done through an ethernet cable) so that I can have a separate N network which only 1 laptop will connect to.
So the problem I have is that no matter what options I select in the airport extreme when it's connected via ethernet it tells me that nothing is connected to the Ethernet WAN port. I've tried two different cables different ports on the back of the hub etc. nothing works. Every time I search google or forums for an answer people just write "connected it via ethernet and it works great" but there's no guide to what settings to use that I can see.
Can someone please help me with some sort of noob guide to get this setup how I've stated?

thanks fro the quick response. I have actually tried exactly that but it still flashes orange at me I'm suspicious that the AE may have a fault because during the setup (i can't remember the exact steps) but I got the AE updated and it complained that it could read from the AE (error code was 10057). Googling this does thow up a couple of solutions which I haven't tried.
so my steps should be:
Factory Reset the AE
setup as join existing network
join via ethernet to create a 2nd network
connect up the cable to the WAN port and the Lan of the Hub
change to bridge mode.
One thing I did notice (which may or may not be related) is the subnet mask on the AE says 255.255.0.0 when I set it up like this. However when I make it just join the network without trying to create a new one (which works) it sets it to 255.255.255.0 . the IP address also begins 192.168.1.* whereas in the other setup mode it is something different. Does that matter at all?
