a jdbc thin connection requires a tcp/ip listenrer to be active
on the "server" machine.
in this case it's also your "client" pc.

  • Can I connect via jdbc thin like "sqlplus / "?

    Hi all,
    do you have a solution to connect to Oracle using
    DriverManager.getConnection
    like sqlplus' feature to login without authentication?
    I tested the settings using sqlplus from cmd line, fine.
    Using JDBC, I can't succeed...
    TIA, Hans

    You mean using Java?
    If you are using Java, then it can work with:
    con=DriverManager.getConnection
    ("jdbc:oracle:thin:@IP:PORT:SID","UserName","Password");
    It works fine with my code.
    Sincerely,
    Rachel

  • Error trying to connect via jdbc

    I'm trying to connect via jdbc driver from a java application to a remote db. The code is quite simple
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection
    ("jdbc:oracle:thin:@dbhost:orcl", "user", "password");
    in my CLASSPATH I have the ojdbc14.jar file
    When I run this program I get the following error:
    Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection

    Please be aware of the following facts:
    1) sqlplus from the same machine has no problem connecting to the db
    2) there is no firewall or router between the client and the server
    3) As host name I've tried the fqdn (resolved by the DNS), a name I've set up in /etc/hosts, the mere IP address
    4) Checking with tcpdump, I've verified that NO network packet actually leaves the client, so the problem completely lies there.
    Has anyone some good idea why this happens?

    Make sure you are providing correct hostname and listener port number

  • SSL connection with JDBC thin driver

    I am attempting to connect to an instance of Oracle 10.2 using the JDBC thin driver with SSL. I want to use the encryption feature of SSL only, but I can not perform the getConnection on the DataSource without running into an exception. According the JDBC docs, the SSL encryption feature is new for the 10.2 release of the JDBC thin driver, but I have seen no working examples. See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/java.102/b14355/overvw.htm#CHDIHFBD
    I am using ojdbc14.jar on Java 5.0 using a standalone application, and it fails with an IOException (The network adapter could not establish the connection) (Error code 17002). I even enabled tracing using the ojdbc-g.jar to try to figure out what the REAL problem is, but it was not helpful at determining a root cause. I changed the driver type from "thin" to "oci" (and installed Oracle Instant client for my test machine) and the connection works just fine using the same tnsnames file, the same wallet, and the same cipher suite. From the Java perspective the only thing that changed was four characters -> "thin" became "oci". I am still using password based authentication as I understand that the authentication part of SSL is not supported in the thin driver on 10.2
    Can anyone verify that the SSL encryption works with JDBC thin as advertised? (not the Oracle Net encryption, but rather the one described in Chapter 11 of the JDBC Developer's Guide. See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/java.102/b14355/sslthin.htm#CHDFEICG
    I really would prefer to avoid using the OCI driver because of its dependencies on the native platform. Is there something special with how the users are created or how the JDBC API should be used? I am setting what I think to be appropriate parameters (oracle.net.wallet_location, oracle.net.cipher_suites) all to no avail. Does anyone have a working example they can provide?

    1) I would suggest posting this question over in the JDBC forum. The folks over there are far more likely to be able to help you.
    2) When you do post this question over there, I would strongly suggest posting some sample code/ configuration scripts so that folks can reproduce your problem on their local machines. That tends to make it far easier to debug the problem and/or to notice if you've missed a step.

  • Connection through jdbc thin client taking more time than from sqlplus!!!

    Hello All
    Machines A and B
    Applicaion in A is connecting to B(9.2.0.6),db server.
    The schema is so small with few tables and data in each table less than 500 rows
    We are in the process of migrating the Application Schema in B to C[9.2.0.8].
    But the response time is more when the application fetches from C.
    Even while selecting the sysdate from dual.
    The application is using the jdbc thin client for fetching the data.
    When the same sql is executed by (from A to C)
    sqlplus -s user/pass @execute.sql, its gets done in a fraction of a second.
    But when the same is done through the application which uses jdbc thin client, it takes few seconds
    to complete.
    When tried with a small java program that uses classes12.jar (from A to C)
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection(URL,UID,PASS);
                   stop = System.currentTimeMillis();
                   System.out.println("Connection time in milli sec: " + (stop - start));
                   System.out.println();
    ..It was found that creating the connection was taking time.
    But the same is not happening when tired through the sqlplus
    Could someone throw some light into this?
    What could be the reason for jdbc to get slower while establishing connections?
    TIA,
    JJ

    are you using latest drivers - http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html
    you may want to check some options reducing jdbc connection cost from the otn samples - http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/index.html

  • OS_USER not correct when connecting using JDBC Thin Client on 10G

    Hi Folks,
    We are migrating an application from a 9i database to 10g and have a problem that someone might have come across before.
    The application is a Java applet based application that connects to the database using JDBC Thin client. on 9i the OS_USER comes up as the user running the applet but in 10G it is coming up as the user account that installed 10G on the DB server.
    We tried using a 9i client to identify if it was a client or DB issue but its the same problem with the 9i client connecting to the 10G DB.
    If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John.

    What is the return of this command?
    SELECT sys_context ('USERENV', 'OS_USER') FROM dual;
    Is it the DB user or the OS user?

  • How can an Oracle9i Lite DB receive connections via JDBC?

    I have not really experienced with accessing Oracle from Java, so here is a short description of the problem:
    I haven't yet figured out how is a database listening for connections. I think that the use of Listeners is for this job but I have not yet been able to configure them right for enabling access from a Java program. All these terms like SID and Net Configuration Manager are quite confusing and don't know how to use each.
    My database is Oracle9i Lite and called "harris_db". I am using JDeveloper9i and the Thin driver is used for accessing the database. The database is local and I am not sure whether I am supposed to use only TCP, IPC or both protocols. Do I need a Name Server? Also, what should be the database URL? I know that is should have the following format "Oracle:thin@..." but don't know exactly.
    Sorry for all those questions, but I am trying to find a way, I am really confused...!
    Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    The 9i 'Lite' database is not a multi-user db and doesn't have a listener. You should be able to use the JDBC/ODBC bridge to get to it, I haven't looked at the lite version in a while there should also be a type-2 driver for it which would eliminate the bridge. I doubt very much that there is a type-4 driver for it, but you can check. The 'big' Oracle type-4 (thin) and type-2 (OCI) drivers are not intended for use with Oracle Lite.

  • Infinite wait for connection using JDBC thin driver.

    Hi,
    I am using an OracleDataSource and an OracleConnectionCacheManager to manage my connection pool from my stand alone Java application. I am using ojdbc14.jar for my Oracle drivers. The database is Oracle 10g RAC. Java version is 1.5. I am using thin client.
    The problem I have experienced is that upon calling the getConnection() method on the OracleDataSource object, my application waits infinitely for a connection. As my application is not checking how long it takes to retrieve a connection, the application effectively hangs.
    Has anyone else witnessed this behaviour?? I have observed this behaviour in two seperate stand alone Java applications that are both talking to Oracle RAC databases.
    When I create the OracleDataSource, I am considering calling the setLoginTimeout() method to specify a timeout when trying to connect to the database. Does anyone know if this will throw an SQLException if the infinite wait occurs again??
    Thanks, Kenny.

    OK, I have the JVM stack trace at last!!! Here it is. This actually uses the following code every single time a database connection is required.

  • Does anyone have an applet that runs on Windows CE and connects via jdbc to lite DB

    I am trying to get an applet to connect to the Oracle lite DB
    I use
         if (conn == null)
         // Load the JDBC driver
    Class.forName("oracle.lite.poljdbc.POLJDBCDriver");
         conn = DriverManager.getConnection ("jdbc:polite:polite", "SYSTEM", "MANAGER");
         output.appendText ("Connected\n");
    but CE just echos oracle.lite.poljdbc.POLJDBCDriver and does not connect.
    Does anyone have any working samples? I am using Jeode JVM on the CE device

    We have the same problem with that platform, but we get a
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission loadLibrary.oljdbc40)
    exception.
    Thank you in advance.

  • JDBC Thin Connections with SSL and client certificates

    Hi ,
    we are going have a look at JDBC Thin Connections with SSL and client certificates.
    I have two questions:
    1. Is it possible to use SSL connections from JDBC Thin Driver and which release of the driver introduced it
    2. Is it possible to use client certificates with JDBC Thin Driver and which release of the driver introduced it
    Thanks for your help
    regards
    Markus Reichert

    I could not reproduce the error after appending the SSL certificate to the certdb.txt file available under $Jinitiator_Home/lib/security folder.
    Steps to add the SSL Certificate:
    1. Run the form with the https mode in the IE Browser.
    2. Security Alert is raised.
    3. Click on the View Certificate button.
    4. In the Certificate Window, click on the Details tab.
    5. Click on the Copy to File button to copy the certificate.
    6. Copy the certificate and append to the certdb.txt file.

Is there any way to compress my data stream while connecting to JDBC connection ? I did tried knowledge base but didn't find a concrete answer from there?

    Mechanisms like that are always a trade off one which doesn't necessarily work over time.
    The problem is that one is trading CPU time for network bandwidth. And relation between those can vary greatly in a short amount of time.
    In terms of absolute performance the best way is to create a design that minimizes volume and size.

  • Connecting Via Windows FTP Service

    I recently moved several sites that used Contribute to a new
    webserver (Windows 2003 running IIS 6). The server uses Windows FTP
    Service.
    To create a FTP account I created a Windows Account and then
    a Virtual FTP directory with the same name as the windows user and
    pointed that virtual directory at the root of the site I want to
    update with contribute. I gave the Windows account full control on
    the site root folder. I can FTP connect via Internet Explorer and
    the command line.
    When connecting via contribute I get an error saying
    The directory you specified does not exist. Please make sure you
    entered the directory name correctly. On some servers,
    file/directory names are case sensitive"
    Contribute seems to be trying to change directory to a folder
    with the same name as the FTP virtual directory, rather than to the
    folder that the virtual directory points at.
    here's the error log from contribute

    Hi!
    I think the windows service is using a different systemaccount that your other application, and that account does not have rights to read the sbo-common database.
    You can change the account used by your service on the service definition or in the SERVICES application of Windows.

  • Connection error to 9i database using JDBC thin driver

    When trying to connect to a new 9i database using the JDBC thin driver, I received the following error:

    I have no problem with my code connecting to an Oracle 8 database, just 9i.
    I'm trying to debug in Visual Cafe (JDK 1.1.7) and have both the classes111.zip and the nls_charset11.zip in my CLASSPATH.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

    If you're using 8i 8.1.7.1 or 8i 8.1.7.0 thin JDBC drivers on NT, then you can get them to connect to 9i by applying the 8i 8.1.7.1 Patch available at:
    http://technet.oracle.com/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/solsoft.html
    You might have to register/login first.
    Basically, it's just a case of replacing a class already in your classes111.zip or classes12.zip with the class in the patch.
    Took me a while to find this, but it worked first time after patching. Hope this helps.

  • Error connection jdbc.thin in JavaApplet

    With oci8 driver I connected to my database
    but useing jdbc.thin in Applet and in other local program on JAVA - error:
    in Applet:
    Connecting....
    no suitable driver
    in local java program:
    java.sql.SQLException:The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
    What does it mean?
    What i must do to connestion?

    Are you running the Applet off a Webserver ?.
    If yes then have the $ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/classes111.zip file
    included in the ARCHIVE list for the applet.
    The jdbc driver classes are present in the above zip file.
    When you run it locally, the zip file is present in the CLASSPATH, and hence it works.
    If you are invoking the applet locally without a webserver, using a appletviewer, then having the classes111.zip file in the CLASSPATH is sufficient.
    Hope this helps.

  • Jdbc thin error : The Network Adapter could not establish the connection

    jdbc thin error : The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
    I have been able to create a webservice as per the article Build a PL/SQL Web Service by jason price from otn website. while executing url to call the pl/sql procedure to get the data i am encountering this error

    I am not able to debug this error and any information to debug this error would be appreciated. I have scanned the metalink short of logging a tar. I am using the oc4j install on the 9ias webserver and not the jdeveloper/oc4j combination. The apps server runs 9ias on hp/ux.
    Thanks

    Ashok,
    Your database connection URL doesn't look right to me. The default database connection listener port is 1521 (not 9200). You can check this using the "lsnrctl" utility.
    To find the "host" and SID parts (of the URL), use the following SQL query:
    select HOST_NAME, INSTANCE_NAME from V$INSTANCEGood Luck,
    Avi.
