Connecting Win98 pc to Tiger

I'm wondering what the trick is. I have 2 Win98 pcs that connect just fine to/each other and my Panther eMac (10.3.6) but they won't connect to my Tiger iMac (10.4.2). My network is running fine and all the other connections work without a hitch.
Have checked ALL the network settings, Workgroup name, sharing, accounts, passwords, etc. on Tiger & Win98 multiple times - everything appears correct.
The Win98 pcs can see the iMac on the network (by name & by IP address), pings work just fine, etc. but when I try to log on or map a network drive from the Win98 pcs to the iMac my password is rejected, and I know I'm using the correct password.
Funny thing is, the iMac can connect to the Win98 pcs just fine, via GO>Connect to Server. I know that's effectively a workaround to the problem, but for security reasons I'd really rather have the connection go the other way so I don't have to turn on sharing on the pcs).
Any idea what's going on here? It seems to me to be a difference between Panther & Tiger since the pcs have no problem logging onto my Panther machine.

Hi Martin, sounds frustrating. What I'd do is open Applications/Utilities/Console and leave it open and try to connect via the PC. THis should give you human readable messages of what is happening, even though the errors maybe gibberish, it'll give you a place to start.
Cheers.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

i've personal oracle 8i with only scott/tiger schema on my pc. i installed forms 6i. when i try to connect to my scott/tiger schema it gives me tns listener error. i'm using scott/tiger as username/password. i tried keeping Host string null and 'ORCL' but no luck....
    any help is appreciated
    thank you very much

    Himanshu,
When u have the default database and Oracle Forms on the same machine, from SQL prompt it will connect to the database without any connect string. But when u connect from Forms u NEED to have a TNS entry. Open explorer --> Oracle Home directory --> Network --> Admin and u will find the Tnsnames.ora Open this file and create a new TNS entry ( u will find examples ) Give ur machine IP address/or user name and SID ( which will be ORCL by default ) save this file. Then connect from Forms it will connect. Good luck
    orcl.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = your machine IP)
    (Port = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
now orcl is ur TNS name

  • Having trouble connecting to 10.4 Tiger machine

Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum so bear with me. I did some searching here and through Google but can't find any real solutions.
I just bought a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.4 I think) installed. My old machine (still in use) is another MacBook Pro running Tiger (10.4.11). I am trying to connect to the old machine through the network so that I can copy all (well most) of the data over. However, when I try to connect through the network, the new machine never finds the old one. I have tried afp://old-computer-name.local and even the IP address but not luck. If worse comes to worst, then I'll just pull the HD out of the old machine and put it in a USB enclosure, but I was hoping to avoid that.
Thanks in advance for any help you might have to offer.
    Mark

I figured it out. Although I never had to do this with 2 OS X 10.4 Tiger machines, I wound up turning on sharing. Once I did, the Tiger machine showed up on the SL machine.
    Thanks all for looking.

  • Cannot connect OSX 10.4 Tiger to wifi WEP personal

I have two old G3's or G4's that can only run OSX 10.4 Tiger. They connect to unsecured routers just fine.
But the problem is they cannot connect to my Q1000 Centurylink wifi router when i put a password on it. I have tried WEP and WPA-personal and used AES and TKIP configurations, but they tell me they are unable to connect. I know there are few of these around but it seems odd that i cannot find this issue on the internet with a Google search.
Can you think of any work around?
A different forum that is more relevant?

Hi, on WEP try Putting a $ in front of the password...
    $paswd
    If 5 chrs.
    Or...
nstead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed. Before I went through network diagnostics and all of that stuff in system preferences, and then I tried the "Join Other Network" method, and now it works like a dream.
On WPA personal, the original Airport cards neede a Firmware update to do that, & they cant do WPA2.

  • Can't connect to wireless after Tiger upgrade

I have a Titanium Powerbook. I was able to easily connect to a wireless network when I used OS 10.1 (just selected network, put in password and was immediately connected).
I upgraded recently to Tiger and it detects the network, I put in my password, and it will connect for a second. Internet connect will say "Connected to 2WIRE_, Getting status" and the airport symbol in the menu bar will be black. Then it immediately switches to "Not associated with any network. Status not available" and the airport symbol is grey. I know it is connected for a little bit, because the widgits can update, but it doesn't stay connected long enough to use the internet. Other people using this network are not having a problem. What's the deal? Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. The owner of the router assured me that another computer with Tiger has been able to connect to it just fine before, so this doesn't appear to be the problem.
I also was having problems with my computer not recognizing that there were CDs in it. So I restarted in OS 9, then reinstalled OS 10.4. This solved the CD problem, but not the connection problem. Sometimes it gives all the numbers in DHCP, so I wrote them all down and then entered them in manually. Now it says my computer is connected to the network, but I still can't get online. I realize I should check the router still, but I doubt that's the problem, since other people in the house can connect.
I'll try trashing the preferences file tonight, like you said.

  • Connecting from Mac on Tiger to Mac on Snow Leopard

When I click on the Network icon in the Tiger finder, I see my other 2 macs on our home network. When I click on one (another Tiger machine), I get the "Connect to Server" dialog, asking Connect as: (guest or Registered User) and a Name field and Password field. I can connect without a problem.
When I click on the Mac that is running Snow Leopard, I gent the SMB/CIFS File System Authentication" dialog, with 3 fields; Workgroup or Domain (has WORKGROUP prefilled), Name and Password. When I try logging in it fails. I believe it tells me the alias is stale, or something.
Can I remove the alias, and will it re-connect to it when I bring up the finder again? It almost seems like the ip on the Leopard machine changed and now its confused. Also, why is it bringing up the SMB dialog? Is it just cause it is confused?
Hope someone can help. I can connect from the Snow Leopard mac to any of the other 2 Tiger macs.
    Thanks!

Is there a way to reset the alias?

  • No Network Connectivity on G4 after Tiger upgrade.

Yes, I know the machine is ancient. It's a Power Mac G4 with dual 1.25Ghz processors. Has a built in Airport card.
I did a clean install of the Mac OS the machine came with... 10.2. Airport worked fine, was able to get online.
Then, I did an upgrade to Tiger (10.4). After the upgrade ALL network connectivity is gone, cannot connect via Airport or Ethernet.
Airport card still shows up in system profiler, and the status icon is next to the time display. However, it is greyed out, and zero networks show up as being available. There are at least 5 networks available on my other Macs.
Also, Ethernet connection doesnt work either. Again, works fine when plugging the same Ethernet cable into my MacBook...works wonderfully via Ethernet. When connected directly to the Power Mac G4 however, no connectivity. No IP address at all. I've even tried doing a manual IP address, to no avail.
    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi again, apply this...

    Does that do anything?

  • Windows XP SP 2 DHCP failure connecting to OS X Tiger Server

    Hello,
Standard setup for DHCP Server on OS X Tiger Server... latest version. Mac's acquire 192.168.7.x just fine from OS X Server. When XP SP2 client attempts, shows self-assigned ip and subnet. Looking at the DHCP log in Server Admin, the server sees the xp client discover message, offers a response to the xp client, but that is it... no request for DHCP configuration information or acknowledge. If I go wireless, 10.0.0.x with XP, does fine as does the mac clients. What am I missing. Turned off the firewall, same scenario for DHCP through OS X Server. If I plug in the XP client directly into the cable modem, works fine for DHCP also. I've done some searching on the net for some info, unable to find any info that helps. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Add some setup info. en0 is the static ip address for the server to the cable modem... 10 static. Using en1 as the DHCP server 192.168.7.1. Network consists of 10/100 switches. Standard DHCP settings in SA. IP range from 192.168.7.2 thru 127 using en1. DNS is set to 192.168.7.1. LDAP is configured and works fine with Open Directory on. I do have WINS set to our en0 static ip address for the server, but Windows services in SA are off. That is the DHCP settings in SA. Any info and help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Apple programs will not recognize Internet connection after Tiger upgrade

In January, I posted the question below. I wanted to update it, but this site has archived it and will not allow responses. In the hope that I may help someone else, I am repeating my question, now that I have the answer.
    ===============================================
    ORIGINAL PROBLEM
Last week, I upgraded from 10.3.9 to Tiger. Ever since then, I have had trouble using Apple's programs that require internet usage: Safari, iTunes, Software Update, etc. All of these programs think I am not connected to the Internet. But I am; I can use Netscape, Internet Explorer, and other non-Apple programs on the web.
Furthermore, it's not consistent. Sometimes Safari will recognize the connection. I'll be using Safari, looking up websites, when suddenly it will quit connecting, giving me the message, "Cannot connect to the server," no matter what server it is, even apple.com (so I have to use Netscape to access my .Mac and this Support screen).
    How can I resolve this?
    ==============================================
The problem was that my Earthlink Access software was setting a proxy on my connection. Netscape & Firefox worked because they ignore any proxies; the Apple programs (plus Shiira and Internet Explorer) didn't connect because they use the proxies.
Why did it sometimes work? Well, if I first used Safari to go to a secure website of my bank, somehow that opened up the connection and then I could continue to use the Internet and Internet based programs like iTunes and widgets. However, if I tried to use an Internet-based program before going to the secure site, then it wouldn't work.
After months of phone calls and e-mails and sending data packets and all such stuff with Apple Care, they finally stumbled upon this answer: Uncheck the proxy box. And that did it. At first I had to uncheck it every time I started up the computer, but now it stays unchecked and I can use my Apple programs with no trouble.
I just wanted to share this with you in case you also had trouble with Internet connections after upgrading to Tiger, because I did see several other people had this same trouble.
Movable flat-screen iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25Ghz processor, 256 MB memory (DDR SDRAM)

For the record, could you state each Proxy box you ended up unchecking please? I'll attempt to submit a user tip with credit to you for finding this solution.

  • Leopard Clients Take 10 Minutes to Connect to Tiger 10.4.11 Server

I have a single Tiger server OS X 10.4.11, on a LAN with 5 Tiger Clients and 2 Leopard clients, all with up-to-date patches.
My problem is, that ALL of the Tiger clients can access any of the server shares almost instantaneously, but when I try to connect a Leopard client the the server, it initially takes a minimum of 10 minutes! If I just click on the server <as displayed on the Finder SHARED tab>, the connection eventually fails. However, if I click on the "Connect as" button, after about 10 minutes, I get the user/password login, and the Leopard client connects immediately, and all the data on all the share points are accessible.
But, if I don't actually mount a share point (i.e. see a the Network drive icon on the desktop), and use finder column mode to navigate through the shares, if I click on a local drive in the same finder window, I have to go through the whole 10 minute wait again before I see the user/password login.
    So my question:
Why is it taking a minimum of 10 minutes for the Leopard clients to connect, where as the Tiger clients connect immediately?
So, if anyone can help me trouble shoot or resolve the server settings so that the Leo clients can connect as quickly as the Tiger clients, I would be extremely grateful.
BTW - I followed the setup instructions precisely as per the Linda.com *+Mac OS X Server v10.4 Tiger Essential Training+* CD.
    TIA
    Gary

Turn this off for all sharepoints. If you have no Bonjour-only printers -like some of those POS HP color Laserjet 26xx or 36xx series- enter this in Terminal.app or through the 'Send UNIX command...' in ARD to all of your Leopard clients:
    launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
user should be root if sent from ARD, prepend 'sudo' (without quotes) if in Terminal.app or if you're using an admin username from ARD. This turns off Bonjour.
Also, in WGM, look at each individual user account and see if the 'Primary Group ID' is listed in the 'Other Groups' list. If it's not, click the '+' sign and drag the user's primary group into the 'Other Groups' list and then save. You can 'shift-click' and select groups of users and add the group to them all at once if they are all in the same groups.
    Access:
    Authentication=Standard
Change the access to 'Any Method'. If your clients are all bound to the OD master and the sharepoints are listed in the directory (meaning Kerberos SSO works for all clients and users), the clients will try Kerberos first and anything else -like DHX authentication- if that fails. Also, if you are managing your clients with MCX you should have those shares mounting before log-in -meaning at startup- using guest access or at login with the username/pass.

  • How do I find out who is sharing my internet connection?

I have enabled Internet Sharing on my ethernet-connected PowerMac G4 (running Tiger) through its Airport card.  What utility do I use to see who is actually using the connection?

That has nothing to do with OS X or your iMac, if you think someone has been using your Internet connection then you need to turn on the security on your WI-FI router. Please look in the owners manual of your router for instructions.

  • Losing network connection in 10.5.4

I have a recent problem with my internet connection. I have used the same computer (macbook) for 18 months in same address without other major problems; only change i can see have been the updates in the os X.
I'm writing to these forums only because i think i have excluded other alternative explanations and i'm pretty sure the problem must be in my computers settings.
The problem appeared as I re-activated my broadband connection and tried using torrent softwares such as Transmission and Vuze. My connection dies several times in hour when i am using such programs, all traffic in and out from the computer is brought to 0. obviously all programs are affected and no internet traffic occurs. I have sought help from the program forums, and have attempted to make sure all possible settings are right and have tried the nicest possible settings to the network (i.e. small number of connections, small traffic in and out although in the long run that would not really be a good solution). I have used same programs earlier, with the same computer and internet connection but under OS Tiger at much higher speeds for weeks in a row with no problems whatsoever.
When i run network diagnostics, in 9 times out of 10 it claims everything is just fine, sometimes the internet and server light are orange.
Also in about 9 times out of 10 if i just wait for a minute, everything just heals itself and the traffic gets back to normal.
If i disconnect/restart my router/airport express or modem , the network recovers quickly and i get good traffic, for a while.
Just to note, i have tried connecting the modem directly to my computer and the same exact problem exists.
Initially i assumed this would ISPs fault. I have called them twice now, at times when my internet died completely without recovering, and they claimed everything was running just smoothly from their end and according to their information everything up until my modem is just fine; i should be getting nice network traffic.
This leaves the fault to be in my modem or in my settings. I'm going to take the modem to be tested, but of course like to try to adjust my settings seen that lots of people appeared to have problems with leopard network settings.
I made the mistake of trying some quick fixes in these forums without really fully understanding what they do. removing the WPA2 security for a while didn't do anything. typing sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.rfc1323=0 at terminal didn't help either, in contrary now it appears safari and firefox are loading much slower for me. i hope that goes away after a reboot.
In the DNS section of network settings i only see one address, in grey. I asked my ISP to send me their recommended numbers since that was advised in another forums.
the problems are not as apparent when i am not using torrent programs, but then again i am not really monitoring my net traffic as closely at those times. Also i have previously used such programs with no problems, using older OS X versions.

It appears the problem appears only when using torrent software.
There is a lot of discussion on different torrent software forums about this, and directions on how to get around this issue. However with my skills I only managed to get Vuze to work properly while killing the network access from all other application. So i just went back to default settings.
I give up for now, I'll wait until Apple releases OS X update that works together with these programs (like it did in tiger and earlier versions..) or if it's even possible, one of the programs finds a way to get around this issue.

I exited the running sqldeveloper 3.0.03.45, and started the sqldeveloper exe for 3.0.04.34 which I have just downloaded and unzipped.

How do I make this version of sqldeveloper work? What can I try next to help diagnose this problem?

I downloaded and installed a fresh copy of Instant Client 11.2.0.2.0 and added it to my path in place of the 11.1 client.
sql_developer 3.0.04.34 now works. However, sql_developer 2.1.1.64.45 now fails to connect with this error dialog:

I suspect this is the reason I continued to use the 11.1 instant client. I could not easily evaluate the two versions of sql_developer when I also had to switch the instant client. My perception of the early adapter label is that it was another name for public beta. And that means: have a fall back option.
What do you mean by a regular simple connect? The scott/tiger@//lambda/ora10 connect string works when i run .\sqlplus.exe from all four of the instant clients I have here (10.2.0.4.0, 11.1.0.7.0, 11.2.0.1.0 and 11.2.0.2.0). My db server is on a linux box, but I run the client on a windows box.
