I have an iPod Classic Fifth Generation that was first plugged into my old Windows computer running XP. Well, that computer died and I now have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I want to sync my iPod with either one of my macs but I've heard that if I were to do this, it would erase all of my songs or even mess up my iPod. What do I do?

Actually, a Mac should be able to use an iPod that is formatted for Windows. That is because Macs can read and write the Windows "FAT" format. The opposite is not true; an iPod formatted for Mac cannot be used on with Windows, unless it is Restored (erased and reformatted) using iTunes on a Windows PC.
(And it won't "mess up" the iPod either way.)
The iPod needs to be set for Manually manage music, on its Summary tab (in iTunes). You will NOT be able to use automatic syncing if you want to keep the current songs on the iPod (that are not in the Mac's iTunes library). Setting it up to automatically sync music will replace the current content with content from your Mac's iTunes library. If you connect it and decline to do any type of syncing, I think it should get set to Manually manage music. But if iTunes does not seem to give you that choice, cancel and do this next part...
The (long-term) safer and more convenient way is to handle the situation is to transfer the songs files from iPod to Mac. You can't do that using iTunes, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can also re-download purchases from the iTunes Store Purchased screen). However, there are third-party methods and utiltiies that allow transfer of song files from iPod to computer. If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer mac," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your mac, add them to the Mac's iTunes library, then sync the iPod to the Mac's iTunes library (by doing a Restoring it to change its formatting to Mac). Then, the songs will be on the iPod AND backed up on the Mac's hard drive.

Fortunately, you are going from Windows to Mac. Macs can use the Windows disk format, so your iMac can read data off of your Windows-formatted iPod. The reverse would not be true, because a Windows PC cannot read data off of a Mac-formatted iPod.

Photos are different. When iTunes syncs photos to the iPod, they are optimized for the iPod's small screen and stored in a single database file (to save storage space in iPod). Therefore, the images are at lower resolution on the iPod, and there is no way to extract individual photos from the database using software on your iMac. The only exception is IF you had a setting enabled in iTunes when you synced the photos to the iPod. That setting is on the iPod's Photos screen in iTunes (where you set up syncing for photos) for Include full resolution photos when syncing. If that option was checked, you can enable disk use for the iPod and look in the Photos folder using Finder to retrieve the photos.
NOTE: There may be third-party software that can extract individual photos from the iPod's database file. But they will still be the lower res versions of the original photos.

Macs can read Windows formatting so you should be able to connect and use the iPod on your new Mac without any problem. One proviso is that up until now Apple has only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac (unless the range has been expanded to include the iPhone and the iPod Touch which I've no experience of). What this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC. If you were to try and update a Windows based iPod on a Mac it would be restored and reformatted to the Mac file system and have the Mac firmware installed.

Connect your iPod to your new Mac. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod.
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

So I am trying to import the photo's from my iPod to my new iMac. But this does not work. The new iMac suggests to replace the content of the iPod with the content of the iMac, but I want to do just the reverse. When the iPod is connected to the iMac, the iMac seems to ignore the iPod. Probably because the iPod was first used on the old iMac ?

Photos on the iPod are not stored in standard formats, but in formats that are optimised for the space annd screen size of the device. So, unless you have specifically chosen to save full size images on the iPod - and have set up disk access for the job - then it's not going to work.
There are apps that will recover photos from iPods. Have a search on MacUpdate
But the best solution is to get the pics from your old Mac somehow.

Of course. The best would be to transfer the iTunes library from your old Mac or PC to the new Mac, so you will keep everything and you won't have to use any third-party app.
Anyway, if you don't have access to the old PC or Mac, you can transfer songs from the iPod to your Mac. If you purchased all the songs on the iTunes Store, just open iTunes, connect the iPod and transfer the songs. If you are using an iPod touch, you will lose everything if you sync it with iTunes on the new iMac.
Another method is to use an app like Senuti to transfer the songs to iTunes, being a safer way to transfer them if you aren't sure that you will lose your songs

That is correct. The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases.

1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.

Connecting old Ipod nano to new imac

We have a new imac and want to play our previously loaded nano on it. The nano was loaded from an itunes account on another PC in our house. When you plug the nano into the imac, the songs on the nano appear on the imac display, but they are grayed-out and you cannot play any of the songs.
Is there a solution to this? Seems like you should be able to plug and play!

The songs are grayed out on the iPod if it's set to automatically set to update. If the ipod were in manually manage music, you could play the music off the ipod within iTunes. If you are using iTunes 7.0.2, highlight the ipod and change the option to manually manage music on the summary tab. If you set the ipod to manually manage music, you will also need to manually eject the iPod. The following link will give more info on using the iPod manually.

How can you transfer photos from iPod Nano to new iMac?

My friend has an ipod nano. Here's a photo, not sure what gen. it is.
He had a PC that no longer works and has no data left on it. His original iPod Photos were stored on that PC that no longer works.
He has since purchased an iMac and is running Lion OS X, all up to date.
The problem: He NO LONGER has the ORIGINAL PHOTOS, only the ones on his iPod Nano, that used to work with his PC, which no longer functions.
He would like to copy the photos stored on his iPod Nano, to his new iMac.
Using finder, he went to Device, then clicked PHOTOS and dragged the folder to his desktop. It said there was 1.43 GB of content.
However, all that was saved to the desktop was (see other photo) Photo Cache, Photo Database and Thumbs. There are no photos at all. What is he doing wrong? Thanks.

There are a number programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:

Vmware fusion 5.0.2 cannot connect to network on my brand new iMac '27 late 2012

I have tried to install Windows 8 (x64bit) Pro., Windows XP, and CentOS 6.0 using vmware fusion 5.0.2 over my brand new iMac '27 late 2012. However, neither one can connect to the Internet. There was no problem with the same installation on my iMac 2011.
The network board recognized by Windows 8 is Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection.
In the folder of vmware fusion's setting files on Mac OS, I found a file called Windows 8 x64.vmx, and
there is a line as follows.
ethernet0.virtualDev ="e1000e"
Any friend has the same problem or can give me some hints?

IPod and my new iMac

I'm currently waiting for delivery of my new G5 iMac. My 4G iPod is currently set to allow me to manually manage my playlists. Will I have to do anything special when I connect my iPod to the new computer? What will I have to do to transfer my songs from the iPod to the new computer ? I know these questions have been asked and answered a billion times, but after reading through 12 pages of posts i decided to ask for myself.

If you attach it to your new computer it will ask you if you want to sync it with this computer from now on. So before you connect the ipod transfer all your music from your old computer to your new one using whatever method is your favorite. The easiest is probably to set the ipod to work like a hard drive,
1.connect it to the new computer,
2Select NO when itunes pops up and asks you if you want to sync now.
3Transfer all your music off your ipod to your itunes folder on the new mac. 4 Load the songs into itunes,
5 disconnect your ipod,
6 reconnect it and click YES when it asks you if you want to sync now
Don't forget to authorize your new computer to play songs you purchased from the Itunes store.
