Connecting wirelessly to net

My Ibook G4 looks beautiful and works like a dream, but I've had problems setting it up to surf the net wirelessly.
I've got a Netgear DG434G router and WG111v2 wireless adaptor for my main PC. There's no ethernet port on main PC (normal Windows PC) so I was advised to use one on iBook. I can surf on iBook and main PC seems to recognise wireless network because I can surf on that as well.
But when I pull out ethernet cable connection goes. What do I have to do to get it to work without cable? I thought the 14-inch was set up for wireless. We're broadband, by the way

Hi again Paul,
"By the way, my son's Nintendo DS seems to recognise network."
Now that would really annoy me, lol...
Good news that you've actually got an Airport card anyway.
A few things to try:
1) Idiot question first... Are you absolutely sure that you are entering the network name & PW correctly. Caps lock off etc (sorry )
2) According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106250 some third party wifi access points need to have a $ sign put in front of the hexadecimal key or if you are using a 'word' putting it in double quotes, "comme ça".
3) With ethernet disconnected, Go to System Preferences>Network>Airport, click on the 'Assist me...' button at the bottom. Some time ago, I tried to help someone here who was trying to connect to a totally open network in Sydney's airport lounge. Nothing worked until he ran the Network Assistant which then found & connected two networks!
4) Log into the router with the iBook connected via ethernet and temporarily disable security, (you don't mention which you are using btw, WEP, WPA?). Disconnect the ethernet and see if the ibook is able to connect wirelessly then.
If that works, reconnect the ethernet cable, log into the router, re-enable security and change the password. Disconnect the ethernet again and make sure that you can connect with the iBook wirelessly, entering the new PW when asked. You'll have to reset the password on the PC, then. Let's hope that the PC doesn't end up getting locked out, otherwise you'll be over on some Windows forum slagging me off
Try the above and post back with the results.
Best of luck
Adrian

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • WRT54G Ver.6 Wireless Router Won't Let My DeskotopOr Laptop Connect To The Net.

I need some help. My laptop gets a great signal, but won't connect to the net, and my desktop shows that I am connected but no internet is being transfered to it from my router. I first did the power cycle thing, then I went in and reset everything back to the default settings on my router and tried to start over, but that didn't help either. The router is only a couple months old, and my desktop works works great when plugged directly to my modem. Any help would be great.

  • Can no longer connect wirelessly to hub

Until today everything has been fine. Now I cannot connect wirelessly to my hub. I get connection time out messages. Sometimes my hub does not even show up in the list of available networks. I can connect to BT Fon though. I've tried re-booting both the hub and my computer with no effect.
    I'm using an iMac OS X 10.5.5
    Can anyone help please.

    Hi
How do I do this if I can't get on to the Internet properly???
If you follow jjgraphics advice above and connect a wire (ethernet cable) from your hub to your PC/laptop you should be able to connect to the internet.
Funny enough I lost my wireless connection on my  home hub2 last night.
Even though http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider insidder could still see my wireless signal was on a clear channel.
Using ethernet wired connection I was able to still connect to the internet.
I used the button on the side of the Home hub2 and turned both laptops off but still not able to connect to the internet using wireless... even re-entered my wireless key.
The solution was to turn the power off the Home Hub for a minute or so and on turning the hub back on everything worked again.
Btw don't forget Christmas lights can cause wireless problems.

  • Can't connect to WiFi-nets with password

I am not quite sure that this is the right place to post this question, but feel free to move it to where it belongs, any moderator:)
I have encountered a problem I didn't have earlier with my iBook trying to connect to WiFi-nets - it seems impossible to connect with passwords - only the net I have at home with Airport Express works, password included.
As soon as I find a net which doesn't require passwords, it all works.
I experienced this for the first time in February when I visited the newspaper I am working for, which is all Macintosh. They gave me the password to be able to log in to their wireless net, but I just received a message which reads something like An error occurred when attempting to log on to xxx net. Retry? OK. (Translated from Norwegian)
On the same trip, I could log on to public nets where you come to an opening page where you fill in username and pass, but when I visited my mother's where my brother has put up a wireless router, neither my mother's new iMac nor my iBook could connect and we received the same message and had to use Ethernet cables.
It seems to have gotten worse, since I the other day tried to connect to a public network here where I live and with which I have had no problems earlier, but now I receive that same error message.
I suspect that it may be caused by some minor bug in the latest update to Tiger, since another problem with Bluetooth, which went unresolved here, disappeared with that update. But instead, I have gotten this. Hopefully, my assumption is wrong and there is a solution out there:)

    Nothing but perfect.
As for the log in page not appearing, I read in another topic here that sometimes it might help to try Firefox or IE instead of Safari as they might have coded it that way or something to that effect, but the problem is that Airport doesn't even connect to the net as it did earlier. The only thing which happens is that message.
In another forum, someone discovered that if the card is not firmly placed into the contacts, problems may occur, but since I have had no problems earlier and haven't touched the card and it was not installed by me, I very much doubt that it is the case here - and it works with open nets without passwords...

  • How to use time capsule as hard drive and connect with existing net gear router

I have a netgear D6300 router, which i use to connect to internet - which is excellent so far for my downloads and games etc for my PS4 and hence am keen to continue using it. I bought the Airport time capsule for wireless storage, and when i set it up, I was advised on setup to connect the TC to my router, and it did what it needed to do.
Now, in order to connect to internet, i need to connect wifi to net gear router, but to access time capsule, i need to change wifi connection to my newly created wifi network with TC.
I want to use TC as a backup storage for my mac (its a 3TB TC), but also, my laptop has only 500gb hard drive which is now half full from downloads, so i want to transfer all my downloads to my TC and use it as an external hard drive, and future downloads to TC - but when i connect to wifi of TC, i can copy my folder on my mac, but not paste it to TC in finder. (the only thing in TC is an image of tmg of my macbook from first backup.).
How do i use TC as an external HD - there wasn't much difference in price of external wifi/wireless HD between non-TC and TC at 3gb, so i just thought i'd go for the airport TC option.
And is it possible to keep connected to wifi internet via net gear router, AND wifi TC - the whole point i bought it (from US shipped to australia on eBay, therefore not able to send back) was to use TC as external large HD via wifi, but keep my net gear router going.
Surely there is a way to not having to flick between wifi connections of TC and net gear internet.
When i'm connected to TC, i can't access internet, only TC.
And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
This can't be a difficult situation to manage, but i'm not sure how to do it.
    Thanks

And I don't really want to connect TC to my router via ethernet cable, as too many cables.
Sorry but you have very little choice.
The TC can join to a wireless network.. but it is flakey, poor, slow and highly NOT recommended way to do things.
Nevertheless if you want to give it a try .. here is the method.
How do I setup my time capsule with wireless internet?
You SHOULD, plug the TC into the Netgear and run it in bridge mode.. you set the wireless to create a wireless network.. then when you connect to the TC it will be also connected to the internet and fast.
(if you don't do that you may as well have used a USB drive plugged into the Netgear, as it would be just as good).
TC is not actually designed for mixing Time Machine backups and files.. but if you are just storing downloads that is ok.. but I strongly recommend you use a DMG or sparsebundle to prevent the TM and the data from messing each other.

  • Why am I no longer able to connect wirelessly to France Telecom LiveBox?

I have a Wanadoo WiFi LiveBox in my second home. When I set it up everything was working fine and I had full Wifi internet access. Then the last time I was here I was unable to connect to it wirelessly. I hadn't got time to investigate so I simply used it by Ethernet.
This visit I've been trying to get to the bottom of it.
The router works, it connects to the Net, I can connect to the Net through Ethernet. A friend's PC laptop connects to it faultlessly by Wifi, so this suggests the problem is with my PowerBook.
It appears on my AirPort menu and when I select it the Mac pauses for 15 seconds then returns the error message "There was an error connecting the the Network '3B4' ". I've tried several times. I've tried rebooting both the Mac and the router. I've rebooted the router from the admin interface as well as pulling out its power lead. But the problem persists.
I even looked at the Keychain Manager to see if I could delete the Keychain component in case this has become corrupted but there is no sign of it there. (all the other Wandadoo boxes I've connected to over the last year are there funnily enough). I've tried switching off all my OS X firewall services, but no joy.
It's annoying being unable to Wifi to my own router when everyone else can
    Any thoughts?

I'm still plugging away at this one.
Here's what I discovered. If I log onto the LiveBox's admin interface (by ethernet) and enable WPA encryption the PowerBook will ask for the WPA password when I try to log on via Airport, when I enter the password it then says "this network uses access control please contact your administrator". So I go back the LiveBox admin screen and I manually add the PowerBook's MAC address as a permitted user. Then I try Airport again. This time it asks me the password as before then pauses for 15 seconds and says "there was an error joining the network".
So now I know that the Mac is talking to the router. I know it is getting past the password stage (if I have one set), it seems to be getting past the MAC filtering stage, but then one or other of the boxes refuses to continue the negotiation.
Looking at other forums I see I'm not the only one with problems on the Livebox (otherwise known as a Sagem 3202). I know the simple solution is a new Belkin or similar but I'm damned if I want to let this little white box defeat me.

  • Connecting wirelessly with a router

    Hey all,
Got a question about wireless internet.
I have a Netgear router that is connected to my PC and Airport on this new Mac is picking up the signal broadcast by the router in order for me to connect to the Internet.
My question is: if I get rid of the PC, which I intend to do in the near future, will the router have to be connected to this Mac in order for me to connect to the net? Because I actually want to be able to connect wirelessly around my house without being tied down like the PC was. Furthermore, is it possible to just have the router plugged in but not connected to a computer as such and still broadcast the signal needed for me to connect to the net?
Any information on this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe,
No, you do not need to have any computer connected directly to your router. I assume that the router is also connected to a cable or DSL modem. This is all that is required to gain access to the internet; the modem establishes communication with your ISP's server, and the router gains a "public" IP address. The router then grants "private" IP addresses to every computer or device that connects locally within your network (regardless of whether that connection is "wired" via ethernet or wireless), and shares its single public IP address among the private addresses it manages. That's how routers work.

  • A mac, a laptop and a pc can connect to the net, but pc can not conenct to mac or laptop

It's tricky. I have a wireless wrt54g router working off of a comcast cable modem. I have the mac, the laptop and the pc all wired into it. The mac (os X) and the laptop (windows XP) can see and talk to each other and connect to the net. The pc downstairs (windows XP, same version as laptop) can connect to the net, but not to the mac or the lap top, yet it does show up in the network windows of both. I ran the windows network diagnostic and it told me that Default IP Gateway 192.161.1.1 passed, but IP Address 192.168.1.101 failed. I checked the router and the starting IP Address is 192.161.1.100 The same diagnostic on the laptop tells me that IP Address 192.168.1.108 passed. Can anyone tell me why IP Address 192.168.1.101 failed? As far as I can tell both the laptop and the pc have the same internet settings. Thanks Mark

Yes, they need to run bonjour for windows.
The Extreme should also use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. it has to meet SMB standard.
Hard disk should also conform to that.
Open Windows Explorer and type directly into the address the name or the IP of the AE.
\\AEName or \\AEIPaddress (replacing with actual name or IP).
If that fails.. try ping.. open a command windows and ping the AE by name or IP.
You can be pretty sure any failure is caused by name issues or firewall issues.. turn off all firewalls and force the computers to home location.

  • New probs with connecting wirelessly

I'm looked at various other post, but can't seem to find exactly the same problem (sorry if I didn't look hard enough!)
Okay. So, at uni i've been connecting to the net via ethernet. that's fine.
At home however I use airport & wireless connection. This was all working fine last time I came home, I just open my mac select my network, input the password & i'm connected whenever I need to be - ie. i can open & shut my mac & reconnect to the network without re-inputting a pw or anything. it's just done.
    But now, it's not working!
I have to go through network diagnostics & put my password in EVERY time I wake my mac & want to connect!
We've had a new router since I came home last, could this simply be the issue?!
The new one was sent from out ISP as an 'upgrade'... its looks exactly the same & is even the same model i think (i have no idea why they sent it to be honest...)
My dad's macbook pro has no trouble connecting to it without reinputting passwords or anything after sleep.
Anything anyone can think of that I can do?!
    It's pretty annoying!
    thanks
    Lizi

Since no one else has responded, I'll give it a shot...
I'd suggest going into Network Preferences for Airport, deleting the 'old' router name, and then add the 'new' router. Save the 'new' router password in your 'Keychain' when it prompts you, and in the Advanced setup, drag the 'new' router name to the top of the preferred networks.
Even though the routers might look exactly the same, they would have a different internal ID#'s, so to your MacBook it would be a different network than the old one.
    Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response. No, I did not get any error messages or any terms-of-usage screen. The employee I told my problem to was not computer savvy either. She just suggested I move to different spots w/in the library to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. When I connected to the library WiFi it did change the Verizon 3G that is usually in the upper left corner to iPad with two to three emanating arcs. I may have to go to the library in the next town. I was able to connect to theirs in the past when I had to download something greater than 20 MB. Unless I really want it, I will probably not even try to download something more than 20 MB due to the hassle. Yeah, I may have been better off getting a normal desktop or laptop and getting WiFi at home. To do that now would mean having my iPad 2 and a desktop computer, which I feel is extravagant. (I know there are a lot of big spenders out there who got the iPad as additional gadget for fun. This is a rich country.) A Verizon rep told me I couldn't set up a WiFi router at home just using an iPad. So it seems like a person who just uses 3G is limited to surfing the net (not even much YouTube because it eats a lot of data) and using email. I read about an app that helps print wirelessly using 3G, but a reviewer said you had to be an engineer to get it done right. BTW, I like the Steelers. I'm old enough to remember Franco Harris and that blond guy whose name escapes me back in the '70s. Since I live in North Jersey I feel I have to support the Giants. But I know football about as well as computers.

  • I set up time capsule and now can't connect wirelessly

I got home with my new Apple and Time Capsule last Friday and was unable to connect to the net. I called Cox cable and they came out and got me up and running. The yellow light on the Tine Capsule kept blinking but I was able to connect and thought it was just a glitch.
Today I added a printer and, after a few headaches, got it up and running. Then I tried to set up the automatic backup process and thought I was OK. Now, however I can't connect wirelessly at all. I keep getting the message "None of your preferred networks are available." I have a neighbor with a wireless network and it sees that, so something is going on. I also am able to connect directly to my modem and get connected. The yellow light is still blinking!
I have tried re-starting the computer, turning off both the modem and Time Capsule, but nothing works. I am beginning to think I have a defective Time Capsule but the store I got it from is two hours away, so if anyone can offer a suggestion, I would be most grateful.

I just went through the same deal. I'm not exactly sure how I did it, but I eventually got it to work, and even have Back to My Mac in play. For the next ten minutes, anyway.
So here's the deal. These are some of the things I did that you might try.
First, there is a big issue regarding how you presently connect to the internet - DSL modem? Cable modem? A dixie cup and a piece of thread? Time Capsule is both a router and a wireless base station, so whatver you're using now might be performing router duty as well, and screwing things up. I replaced my AT&T 2Wire device (modem, router, and wireless base station in one box) with a DSL modem. Oh, and when I was prompted, I assigned the public IP address for my broadband connection (the one that begins with 70.xxx.xxx.xxx) to the TIme Capsule, instead of having Time Capsule get one of those 192.xxx.x.xxx or 10.x.x.x IP addresses from DHCP.
The modem has to operate in "bridge mode." Whatever the heck that means.
Also, in configuring time capsule, I initially used an ethernet cable attached to a computer (in this case, my MacBook Pro). It seemed easier to get it going that way, and once it had managed to connect, it made it easier to get on just using the wireless connection.
When you're prompted, you want to create a new network, although it might be helpful to take it one step at a time and keep your present network up and running and let Time Capsule join that deploying - initially - just the wireless backup capability.
Oh, and regarding restarting all the hardware, I did that too. But with Time Capsule, if you're not already doing it, you should not just restart the device, but do a reset. On the back of the device if you look carefully toward the right you will see a little pinhole. Get a paper clip and depress the little button inside that little pinhole until the front light begins to blink rapidly. That resets Time Capsule and was the only way I could get the thing to bite at the beginning.
So much for Mac's just working. Although once they do . . . .

  • Actiontel GT704WG - Cannot connect wirelessly

Hello, I recently purchased an older laptop (Toshiba T6100) for my nephew so that he could use it wirelessly around his house. Upon receipt of it at my house, and while cleaning it up, I was able to connect wirelessly to my Verizon FIOS router without any problems. I then took the laptop to his home in Irving, where he has basic DSL service, with the GT704WG router. Regardless if I tried accessing it secured or unsecured, I was never able to access the internet (I could wired). Locally, there was a 'linksys' router that I was able to connect to, and my laptop would connect to this GT704WG, but this laptop could not. It appears that the darn thing can connect to every other router except for this GT704WG.
The card in it is as follows: Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card
I have found the latest drivers for it (2003!), yet still cannot get it to work. I even tried setting it up in WPA mode, no luck.
Has anyone ran across this problem? My poor nephew was on the phone four hours with Verizon Customer Service but they were never able to connect it up either, saying that it must have something to do with the computer.
Remember, this same wireless card easily connected to my FIOS box, and the local linksys one, but NOT this Verizon provided GT704WG.

Did you put this modem into bridge mode?
The directions for that are located by following this path...

  • Unable to connect wirelessly to BTHome Hub

I have a ibook G4 running OSX 10.3.9 fitted out with Airport and have recently taken delivery of a BTHomehub, Both my Mac and laptop PC (also fitted out with wireless capability) are unable to connect wirelessly to this Hub despite being able to connect to the NET using an ethernet cable. It appears that there is no wireless signal being transmitted from the Hub, or at least a signal the both computers can recognise. We have contacted the support teams who have been unable to resolve the issue, and have replaced the Hub, guess what same problem.
Has anyone had similar experiences and if so how was it resolved? There doesn't appear to be any real info on the web about this.
