Connecting with firewire or USB?

Hi everyone,
I have a couple questions about connecting my new 5th Gen. 60 GB iPod to my new MacBook:
The only plug that came with my iPod was a USB connector, which works fine to transfer songs, etc. but I do not think this will charge my iPod when the computer is turned off. However, I have an old firewire cable from my old iPod (3rd Gen. 40 GB). Is it safe to use this cord with my new iPod and laptop? I am a bit wary because I was having issues with the old iPod not showing up on the desktop on my old computer (iMac 10.3.8) when I connected it this way, but it would charge fine in the wall. Can I use this cord to charge my iPod w/ the AC adapter in the wall (since one didn't come with it)?
Thanks,
Abby

Your 5G iPod can't transfer data using firewire. That capability was removed to save space. However, it can charge your iPod. You will get a message that says something along the lines of " You can't transfer data using firewire. PLease pres the center button to continue"
My car charger is firewire based, and after I hit the center button to dismiss the menu, it works flawlessly. Syncing up to my computer with USB is the same as always.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

  • 3rd gen ipod won't connect with firewire.

3rd gen ipod won't connect to itunes with firewire. USB connects rarely but drains battery quickly. I've rebooted the ipod and computer and updated itunes. No effect. Any remedies besides buying a new ipod.

Answer to Question 1: - I connected the iPod with the USB, went to Disk Utility and erased the iPod. Now the iPod works with USB.
Question 2 is still unanswered. Ideas?

  • 3rd gen iPod won't connect with firewire...how can I restore it?

As many others have had this problem, my iPod only charges when connected with firewire. When I connect with USB, it says "Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings"
When I try the iPod Software Updater, it says I need to connect via Firewire.
Question 1: Any ideas on how to restore the iPod?
Question 2: Any ideas on how to get the firewire functional again?
    Many thanks in advance

  • No connection with Firewire but will connect and discharge with USB2.0

My 3rd generation 40gb iPod no longer appears on my desktop or iTunes window when connected via firewire. While connected, to 3 different Macs so far, it behaves as if its plugged into the AC adaper- the charging icon appears after a few minutes but will not mount.
However, when connecting with USB 2.0 the iPod mounts fine but it receives NO power, the battery discharges within 5 minutes and shuts off.
I've known about the USB 2.0 problem but never worried about it until, suddenly ( and apparently others are having this problem ) I am no longer able to mount the iPod via firewire.
I've tried resetting in all its various forms including toggeling the hold button and plugging into the AC adapter and I have thoroughly read the trouble shooting pages.
Has Apple "orphaned" firewire? Is the 3rd generation iPod doomed to 5 minute or less connection times? Is this just a glitch that an update will fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Its not the cable. I have cables and other Macs all over. I've tried the other Macs and different cables plus different cables and diferent dock connectors.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I already eliminated that possibility.
The firewire problem just started Sep 1, 2006. I'm wondering if the last iPod update that occured the last time I was mounted via firewire initiated the problem. This seems more likely than it might have becuase of other posts complaining of firewire connection problems.
    Thanks for responding though!

  • Ipod 4th gen doesn't charge when connected with firewire

when I connect my iPod with usb, it mounts and charge, but when i try to charge with firewire cable (connected to a PPC G4 or to my apple ipod firewire power adaptater), it doesn't(it mounts on my desktop, but doesn't charge...)... i realized it doesn't work after updatig the 1.2.1 version of software for windows....
actually, My ipod works with the version for windows because i'm working with a Mac and ... a PC...
Does anybody know what happens with my ipod???

It can be caused by different things, please check the following one by one:-
    1. Check your firewire cable, is it a faulty one? have you tried another on?
    2. Do a Reset for your iPod and reboot your Mac again
    3. Make sure you turn the insight off, if any
    4. Redo the Restore to factory setting again (using the latest version of iTunes 7.1)

  • Ipod won't connect via firewire, only usb

My clickwheel ipod decided to stop connecting via firewire. I reset it, and the restored it, and reinstalled itunes. Nothing worked. I then took out the USB cable from the box (for the first time in almost 3 years) and it works perfectly.
While trying to connect via firewire, it either doesn't show up in itunes or updates about halfway through and then stops and says error -124.
    Any ideas? thanks

i think we use the same form that is used for repairs to the ipod itself. when i click on the "Request a replacement accessory for your iPod" link on this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/
i get sent to the standard iPod Service request page:

  • IPod 4G click wheel wont sync with itunes with firewire and USB

my iPod 4G click wheel 20GB won't sync with my Macbook Pro OSX Mountain Lion.......
only way work is .. I keep plug in and out the dock connector from the iPod ... after 30 to 50 times... it probably work!
    Anyone has same problem?!

Do you have another cable you can try to rule out the possibility that the cable is damaged or faulty?
You might also want to double check the iPod's dock connector for signs of bent, damaged, or corroded pins or even debris that could blocking a full connection with the cable.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can buy a 3.5" drive enclosure with USB that
supports IDE, remove the hard drive from the Firewire
one and put it in the USB enclosure. Mind you, the
iBook G3's USB is the old slow USB 1.1, and will only
transfer at up to 12 Mbps and can't boot off that
    drive.
As for fixing the blue screen issue, once you have
your data backed up for certain, then you can go
ahead and check and see if the following will work on
    the broken machines:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
And if none of those works, let us know more about
the broken machines one at a time, and we can see
what we can do to fix them.
... wow, im sorry it's taken me this long to post my responce but it has been busy here on my mac front. thank you for all your input but everything just happened to work it's self out in one of the best ways possible. I bought myself a max'd out 2gig SDRAM,bright 'n GLOSSY 2.16GHz MACBOOK PRO. say that fast twice after a few drinks. Now that i have a working DVD drive i can just connect my USB to my ibook and Firewire to the other, at different times ofcourse, to upgrade and anything else needed. When i'll actually get to any of that is anyones guess since i plan on spending alkl my time on this wonderfull machine that for one thing when you double click open any app by the time youre lifting off that second click that app is up open and finished loading its startup and ready to go!!!! it's about time these run this fast. • 30gb photo won't connect with firewire

I got a 30GB Photo used to use with my Emac. I didn't realize that it didn't come with a firewire cable. I bought a non-apple cable, and it will only charge, not mount. My Emac doesn't have USB 2.0, so I have to use firewire. I looked in the settings of the iPod and it says windows. Do I have to reinstall software on the iPod to make it a mac iPod before the firewire cable will work? If I use USB it will mount but iTunes will not recognize it. I know my FW ports are good. I use them with my ext HD and my camcorder. When I connect it with the FW cable it just says "do not disconnect" but I can't eject it. Thanks.

I suspect that you are running into problems with your ipod being formated for windows. Too be methodical try this process, to try and eliminate any other factors.
Reset your Ipod (Toggle hold switch on then off, press and hold play/pause and menu buttons)
Now retry connecting it using a different firewire/usb port
Restart your computer and make sure you have the most recent software updates
Remove itunes and reinstall ipod and itunes from the most recent versions online
Restore the ipod via ipod updater.
I suspect your problem will be solved in the last step, since it sounds like your ipod is formated for windows.

  • Can an external Mac/Time Machine hard drive be connected with Airpot thru USB for wireless backup

I purchased a seagate 3 tb hard drive and planned on connecting it to my airport via usb. I setup the drive and did the full time machine back up of my imac. I then powered down the airport and the hard drive. I then plugged in the drive and airport and then powered them up. The airport lite up green then went yellow and stopped broadcasting.
Can these two work together like Time Capsule does?

I was sort of in the same boat. I ended up getting a 4th generation TC about six months ago. I only got the 2 TB model as I have a number of those WD My Passports laying around. I decided to use the TC's internal HDD as a NAS and use a powered USB hub with two My Passports attached to them for Time Machine backups. I use the 500 GB for my Mac mini backups and the 750 GB for my two other Mac laptops.
I could have just as easily switched to using the intenal HDD for Time Machine and the My Passports for the NAS. However, I wanted better to use the better transfer rates of the internal drive for my NAS.

  • New Nano - will it work with firewire or usb 1.1?

I have a g3 b&w with a 3g ipod (4 buttons and the wheel) hooked to firewire on the g3. This works great.
I just bought a Nano and was wondering if the Nano could handle the same setup that I have been using successfully this past year-and-a-half with the other ipod or do I need to go out and buy a usb 2.0 card?
    G3 b&w with 3g ipod and a new nano   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I believe it was an Adaptec USB2connect 5100. I figured that if I was going to bother putting a card in, I wanted as many ports as I could reasonably afford. It comes with 6 USB ports, 5 external, 1 internal.
This was a no muss, no fuss install. Open my Sawtooth, put in the card, closed it up, plugged everyhing in, it worked.
I'm running 10.4.3, but the card should work just fine under 10.3.9. It uses the standard USB drivers that come with the OS. I didn't even have to install anything. It comes with a CD, but I believe that's for installing in a windows box.

  • Connect with firewire

Does anyone know why apple doesnt let us connect ipods to the computer via firewire? I know it technically does connect but only for charging.
    Just curious.

I wish that I would have know that firewire would not work with the 5th gen. My iPod hard drive when bad 15 days after warranty expired. Now I cannot use the firewire cable for anything but charging.
Has anyone heard about why it will not work?
Are they going to develop a patch to have it work?
    Is the firewire dead?

  • Laserwriter 16/600 connection with parallel to USB adapter

I have a mac mini and and the great ole workhorse Apple laswerwriter 16/600 PS printer. I bought a parallel to USB adapter cable but have been unable to get it to work.
Also the ethernet connector on the printer is a very small type connector unlike the current ethernet type ports. Would I be better off trying to find this type of an adapter?
I have spent hours searching and can't believe I am the first one to ask this question.
    Thanks All!

The Ethernet connection supports Ethernet communication via an AUI-15 connection, when used with an external AAUI-to-twisted pair (RJ-45) transceiver. It is located between the LocalTalk (MiniDIN8) and Fax (RJ-11 4-pin modular jack) ports. Its Icon resembles:
    <__>
To use it, you need only purchase a transceiver, available for US$5 to 10 at eBay or used computer dealers.
