Connecting WRE54G to WRT54G

I seem to get through the setup OK and have a strong signal indicated in Wireless Networks but the signal strength indicated on the Wireless Connection is still the same poor signal I started with.  It suggests to me that the PC is not connecting to the expander yet all the settings seem OK.
Can someone help me with this?

Make sure the range expander and the router are in the same IP range then disable the security on the router. Press the autoconfig button on the range expander for 30 secs then release it, see if the blue lights are lit. Try pinging the range expander from a working computer, if it works then it's already repeating. Encrypt the range expander first then your router if you need wireless security turned on. Goodluck ayt?!

  • Unable to Connect WRE54G and WRT54G

So I've got a WRT54G Router and a WRE54G Range Expander. The router works fine on its own (Firmware 2.02.7) but when I try to get them working together, it just doesn't work. I tried the auto config on the Range Expander, but to no avail. I tried running the Setup Utility from the CD, and once I get past confirming my wireless settings it says that it can't find the Range Expander and to make sure that it's powered on (which it is). My computer IS getting a signal (an excellent one at that) from the range expander as "CNITS," but it doesn't have an internet connection from the router. What do I have to do to make this thing work?

Well, as you see from the threads on this board, this is a common problem. I experienced practically everything mentioned here, including the IP confict business but I consider myself "Luckydog" because I finally got it to work (after long hours). The settings on your router should be fine if everything was working pre-RE. The RE is just supposed to mimic them.  Unfortunately, there is no simple answer but trial and error. What I would recommend for you right now is reset the RE to default with the pinhole switch and configure the RE with the ethernet cable and IE interface. Don't try the autoconfig or the CD software. Also, power cycling the whole WIFI network system, PCs, router, RE,  printer servers, etc. does wonders. Bring the router up first as that should start assigning the IP addresses. I don't think the Window's warning is bogus, i.e. there has to be an IP conflict somewhere...
Oh, and forgot. Get ready for a hair transplant as you may end up pulling it all out by the time it is all over!
See below. I had a v1 so couldn't hard wire. Hard wire the RE to the computer instead of the router. Might be the IP conflict problem.
    From Castor post 05-29-07:
Logon to setup page of your wireless router, get the necessary wireless settings e.g. SSID, channel, wireless security mode and security code, reset the R.E. (Range Expander) back to factory default settings by pressing reset button, power down the R.E. and connect directly to the computer, power up the R.E. and assign a static IP on pc e.g.192.168.1.10 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.1, open I.E. on computer and in the address bar type 192.168.1.240, it would ask for username and password, put “admin” as password without any username, put the wireless settings according to wireless router and save the settings…power cycle the n/w by unplugging power cable of router and R.E. power up the router first once your router is rebooted power up the R.E. check whether it works or not and let me know…

  • Intermittment connection problems using WRT54GS in a mixed env

I got a Wireless Router for Xmas and its been a pain ever since. Basically, the internet conection drops frequently with no obvious pattern. My setup is a Speedstream ( DSL ) modem connected to a WRT54GS V7 router supporting 2 Windows XP ( wired ) desktops and an Apple ( wireless ) laptop.
I've spent several chat sessions with Linksys tier 1 support and have changed many options and then finallly they agreed to give me a new router. The new one is still dropping 2 or 3 times a day which always require a power reset to enable the network..
Any ideas ?     I really dont want to go back to a completely wired configuration but will if this isn't resolved soon...

Update firmware to latest version. Hard reset router for 1 minute. Set all settings again. Also set MTU to 1300.

  • Losing Connection with both WRT54G & WRT160N

Problem In Short: My connection is going in and out randomly. One desktop, two laptops connected wirelessly. Same problem on Xbox360. I've been having problems for the last 2 months or so. My connection will randomly hang or go out completely and then come back. The timing will differ each time - sometimes every few minutes, others every hour or so. It started happening with my WRT54G. First, I thought it might have been my modem. Comcast replaced it with a brand new one - still had the same problem. Figured it would have to been the router, and considering it was already pretty old, I went out and bought the WRT160N. Installed everything accordingly, and STILL had the same problem. I lost count of how many times I've called Linksys. Tried power-cycling, tried changing router settings such as radioband, channel, Beacon Interval, MTU, etc.. and still nothing. I have one Dell Desktop connected to the Router, and then two laptops connected to the network wireless. I also have my Xbox360 connected to the network as well. I have the same problem during online games, everything will start out fine but a few minutes in it will either start lagging or lose the connection completely.
ETA: Could it be a problem with the new version of Utorrent (1.7.7)? Any help would be appreciated. Message Edited by SM26 on 05-09-2008 11:06 AM

I also have a connection problem with WRT54G v7 running the latest firmware.
Here's what happens: Seems like a rather serious bug in the firmware causes a watchdog bite.

  • WRE54G connecting to a WRT54GS

I have a WRT54GSv4 that I have used for a long time and it works great. My PC is wired to the router in my room. I also have a PC that has a PCI Wireless G with Speedbooster Netword card (I don't recall the model number, but it's only 6 months old).
So here is my situation. I used to have my PC in the Living room, with a wireless network card. I always had a 5/5 network strength. My dad's PC was in my room where the router is, so he was wired (I am a college student that just moved home, so everyone is trying to accommodate to me being back home). So now I moved my PC into my bedroom and I am wired, and I set up the wireless card in my Dad's PC. He wants to place his PC in the den, where he gets a signal that is, at best, 1/5. I can't move the router to any other room because the cable modem is on a dedicated data line that is only connected into my room.
So, I bought a WRE54G (I don't know what version it is, it doesn't say anything but WRE54G on the box. Also, the RE does *not* have an eithernet port on the front....) and I placed it half way between the router and my Dad's PC. The RE is a good 15 feet closer to the Router, and has better LoS than my PC did in the living room. The RE is in direct LoS of my father's PC. The Range Expander almost refuses to expand range.
I started off by pressing the Auto Configure button. The Link light turned red. I had no idea what that meant because there was no manual what so ever that came with this, just some product advertisement and a something that told me how to run the CD. My router does not have any security encryption, so I do not know why it cannot connect. I placed the RE literally 2 inches from the actual router, press the Auto button, and it still will not connect. I tried to run the CD to set up the RE, and I got to the very last step and it gives an error messages saying "something something cannot access the AP in repeater mode".
This is extremely frustrating to me because it seems like you should be able to plug this in, press a button, and everything work. No matter where I place this RE, the Link light will not turn blue.

    Turnbbw,
This may help....then again it might not.
I've been fighting my RE for weeks now and here's what I've learned.
Take your RE to within 4 or 5 feet of the RT (router). Plug it in. Take a paper clip and straighten out half of it. Insert the clip into the reset button and hold it for at least 30 seconds. I know, I know that sounds like a long time, but this is the only way I was able to get the reset. After that, hold the autoconfig button again for 30 to 60 seconds.
After you do that, go to linksys.com. Go to downloads for WRE54G version 1.
    Hit firmware.
Download 1.06.05. Now remember, this is a .zip file. When it downloads, double-click it. Hopefully, if you have Winzip installed, it will let you extract the files. Put them where you can find them (desktop?) and look at the two files downloaded. The big one is the file you want.
Now from your browser enter 192.168.1.240. God willing, a window will appear that asks for name and password. Skip the name and enter admin in the password. Hopefully, this will open the RE screen for you. Go to help and download the big file you took note of previously. Download it.
Once you've done this, get out of screen. Go to RE and take that paper clip again and again hold for 30 secs in the reset hole. Let go and hold the reconfig button again for 30 to 60 seconds.
After all that, I would do a power cycle. You know, down with the most backend device on your network, working to the wired pc, router, and last modem. Wait 20 or 30 seconds and re-fire everything back up going the opposite direction.
After all that, unplug your RE and take it to an outlet between the RT and the wireless pc and plug it in. TYake a look now and see if it's talking.
Let me know if this makes sense or helps. I'm curious.

  • Repeated lost connections when using WRT54g

    Hello everyone.
I have a Lynksys WRT54g v5 and a cable modem, my ISP is Virgin Mobile. Every half an hour or so my internet connection is lost and can only be regained by reseting my modem by turning it on and off. The lost connections appear to occur more frequently when the traffic is heavier. The interuptions occur even when I only have one wired PC connection.
If I connect the PC directly to the modem the connection works fine.
I have already installed the latest firmware, reset to factory settings, tried a MAC address clone as suggested in another thread but nothing has helped.
Is there anything I can try or should I just bin the router?
    Thanks for your help!

Version 5 and 6 of this router are of a terrible design. No amount of tweaking, reconfiguration or firmware upgrades will likely help with the disconnect problem. Earlier versions are of a much better design. I had disconnect problems with my version 6 router for over two month which could not be resolved by many attempts through Linksys tech-support. Even replacing it with 2 more version 6 routers did not resolve the disconnect problems which occured 3 or more times a day.
After I changed to a version 3 of the WRT54G the disconnect problem was instantly cured. Version 4 and below or WRT54GL ( which is really a resurrected version4)should work fine.

  • Trouble Connecting Laptop to WRT54GS

this happens every time the power goes out. last time. i somehow managed to reconnect, but this time i have no idea what to do! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! i went into the connection properties and changed my IP address and located the network to put in the WEP key. it did nothing... what should i do?

    Hey there, ilumtli!
You says you've changed the IP Settings of your computer? You don't need to do that actually. I need to have your answers for these questions I have in mind.
    1. What is the version number of your router, you could find it at the bottom part of the device and it's usually located beside the model #; ex. WRT54GS v6. 2. Aside from this wireless computer of yours which is not working, do you have a computer which is physically connected to the router? If there is, is it able to get online?

  • Cannot Update Windows 7 while connected to my WRT54G.

For some reason the computers that are connected via wired or wireless through my WRT54G Vers. #6 (Firmware Version v1.02.8) will not connect for updates (Error Codes: 80072EE2-Win7, 80072EFD-Vista) especially OS, anti-virus, malware updates.  This looks like I have some sort of virus, trojan, worm, or what have you, but I have Eset anti-virus software on these systems and there is no detection of anything.  I have ran Spybot Seek and Destroy with no sign of spyware.  These computer are not sharing files, just connected for internet.  Now when I connect them each directly to the internet via cable modem they have no problem updating.  All indications point to my router being the suspect, but I have not changed any settings that would have restricted any access or connections.  I have Googled this to death.  Is there a simple explaination for this problem? Any help is appreciated.
    Mike
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, I'm back to being able to OS update again as well for my anti-virus updates.  Some how my router was updated with some Static DNS address.  I performed a complete reset of my router for I did not know what else may have been reconfigured without my knowing.  Once reset I then reestablished the password for the router and network, then I rebooted my computer.  All is working great.  I spent a total of 4 hours working this issue with very little help from the cyber space.  I hope my pain helps someone.

  • Will the iPad Mini connect to LinkSys WRT54G Router

Will the iPad Mini connect Via WiFi to a LinkSys Wireless G Braodband Router?
The model is WRT54G V5, SN CDFBOE865514 and Firmware is the latest 1.02.8 dated 5 Oct 2009
My wife's iPad 2 connects to it well but we have been unable to connect the new iPad Mini to it.
I have read in some of your notes that the Mini will only connect to Firmware 1.02.8n.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Problem connecting xbox360 to wrt54g

i am trying to connect my 360 to my wireless network and have had limited success. my router is the wrt54g v4 and i am useing the xbox wireless network adapter. i have a desktop that is wired to the router and a laptop that connects wirelessly just fine. the problem on the xbox has to do with the security. when i run  "test xbox live" on the console it never gets pased the second test. i can see my network on the network list and even connect after entering the passphrase but when i run the test again in fails on the second test. on a hunch i disabled the security for the router and the 360 connected fine but i need the security. on the xbox website someone suggested that i change the security to wep and i did and connected fine but then my laptop couldn't connect. any help is appreciated and i thank you in advance.

Disable all firewall on the computer ....
Try this link to configure the X-BOX with the router ....

  • Connecting DSL to WRT54G

Hello...I have my computer hooked up to a LINKSYS router (BEFSR41) and the internet works great.  But I decided to go wireless so I tried hooking up my computer to the WRT54G router.  For some reason, the internet does not work when this is hooked up.  So I disconnected the wireless and put back in the wired router and the internet works fine.  Can someone tell me whats wrong?  Thanks

Colebot...I fixed the problem I had.  Before setting up the wireless router, I had the wired router connected and opened Internet Explorer and typed in 192.168.1.1 which is the ip address of the router.  It will then ask you for a password.  The default password is "admin".  Leave the user name blank.  I then went to the setup.  The problem I had was that the wireless router was set for Automatic Configuration DHCP, but it needed to be set to Static IP. If you have the same problem as I did, copy down all the numbers for the Internet IP, subnet mask, etc under Static IP. Then disconnect the wired router and connect the wireless router.  Log on the same way as you did with the wired router.  Go to setup and to Static IP then copy the same numbers down that were from the wired router.  Click save, restart the computer and it worked.  You might want to try this out...Good luck and if you have any questions, email me or leave a message here!!

  • Dial up connection sharing via WRT54G wireless router

Can someone help me out?  Here's my issue
I have an XP based desktop computer that connects to the internet via a dial up 56K modem.  I would like to share the connection with my new XP vista laptop using the wireless adapter on the laptop.  I have a Linsys WRT54G wireless router.  The desktop pc with the connection I want to share is connected to the router via ehternet cable.  How do I go about configuring the laptop wireless & the router to allow for this.   I assigned a static ip 192.168.1.253 to my desktop from the router (192.168.1.100).  When I enable ICS it changes the ethernet to 192.168.0.1.

Your connection download speed should be about the same 8-9Mbits, whether you are wired directly to your modem, or wired through your router .
You said you reset the router to factory defaults and that it was working better.  Did the download connection speed through the router go to 8-9Mbits/sec ?  If it is still 5-6 Mbits, then this suggests that something in your modem-router system is not setup quite right.  If you still have this slow speed problem, then please post the following info:
    1)  Your ISP (internet service provider)
    2)  Your modem model number and version.
    3)  Open your router's setup pages, and go to the Setup tab.  List all your settings in the "Basic Setup - Internet Setup"  section.
    4)  List the operating system (Windows XP, Win 98SE, etc.) on the wired computer that you are using for the test.
After you list this info, hopefully someone in this community will be able to guide you to optimizing your settings, given your ISP and equipment.

  • Can connect to Linksys WRT54G but can't get to the internet.

    PowerBook G4 17" 1GHz with OS 10.5.4
    Linksys WRT54G v8.00.5
    SpeedStream DSL Modem
I am having a strange issue. I am able to connect to my wireless network with my PowerBook and can see the Linksys setup page, but I cannot get on the internet. If I bypass the router I can get online with my PowerBook. If I use an ethernet cable connected to my Linksys I can get online with my PowerBook. My Sony Viao can connect wirelessly and get on the internet with no issue. My PlayStation 3 and PSP have no issues. It is solely this machine that is having the issue. I contacted Linksys and went through their troubleshooting to no avail.
Does anyone have any idea as to what the issue may be, or what I can try to resolve this issue? I have done everything I can think of and no luck. Any ideas?

I pinged 208.67.219.99 and the following was returned:
    PING 208.67.219.99 (208.67.219.99): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 208.67.219.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=47 time=88.752 ms
    No error message was returned.
I plugged the IP address into Safari and, although there were 27 errors, the page loaded. I hadn't tried that before. Interesting.
The fact that the ping worked means you are connected to the Internet, and what is likely failing (causing the "You are not connected" message) is DNS name resolution.
DNS name resolution is what converts names like "www.opendns.com" to numbers, like the numbers I gave above, 208.67.219.99.
Changing your system to use the OpenDNS DNS servers, as directed above, will fix the name resolution issue on your system.

  • Connection problems with WRT54G Router PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Hello all,
Im having a huge issue and im hoping that someone can help me. Awhile ago i changed what i believe to be my router settings using 192.168.1.1 and i believe i added WEP secuirty. I changed my password i know that much. Anyway my problem is this - When i try connecting a router to my computer, i cannot access the internet OR the 192.168.1.1 setup. I just get a yellow caution sign on my wireless settings (running Windows 7), but when i connect my cable modem (Comcast) to my computer, i can access the internet. I have reset both the router and my cable modem MANY times (hard resets) and STILL cannot get the setup page for the router. I have TWO WRT54G rourters and BOTH do the same thing when connected to my desktop , yet BOTH work fine on an old machine running XP, so it is something i did with this computer. Can someone please help me solve this issue? any hlep would be appreciated as i am stumped and do not know how to fix this and cannot use WI-FI or my Xbox 360 until i can fix this..Thanks.

Check the IP address of your computer and see if it's in range with the router's IP.

  • Unable to connect WRE54g ver.3-US

I have a WRE54g range expander that I am unable to connect to a non enccryted public network. My computer (windows 7) will pick up the signal of the network but when the expander is powered up, it connects to a site (unknown which one) and when running setup, the site survey fails. Also, connecting to the expander results in limited or no connectivity. I cannot connect to the public router by hard wire because it is located at a distance from the house. So my question is: how do I connect the range expander to a wireless public network when auto config does not work? Can this be done manually and how? Also, how do I select which of many available networks, will the expander connect to when site survey fails? I suspect that the expander is connecting to a network which is encrypted and not to the one that  I want that is not encrypted.

Reset the range expander, connect the range expander to your computer, setup static IP and configure the settings manually. Click on the following link for detailed instructions.
