Connecting WRT54G to Another Network Segment

I have one active LAN Jack in a room with a 2 computers and a network printer.  If I have a hub or switch, I wouldn't have a problem or bother posting this problem here.
Info for the Router:
Using DHCP from the Active LAN Jack:
LAN IP: 10.117.0.16
Gateway: 10.117.0.254
DNS: 10.117.0.3
I configured the two computers to get the IP from the Router:
Computer A: 192.168.1.110
Computer B: 192.168.1.111
Printer: 192.168.1.1
The two computers are working fine, it can ping the DNS server or the gateway and the rest of the PCs that are on 10.117.0. subnet.  However other PCs on the 10.117. subnet can't NOT ping the two PCs behind the router.
How can I make the two PCs and printer behind the router be seen by the rest of the network.  I can setup the DMZ or the port forwarding or routing, is there a switch just to make a router behaves like a hub or a switch?

I believe , you need to disable " Block Anonymous Wan Request " under the " Security " tab in the router's ui.....
if this does not work out , then try setting up the router in "router" mode......

  • Connecting WRT54G to Enterprise Network

I want to connect my WRT54G to an Enterprise network and allow wireless users to access the internet, but not my intranet. Are there setting configurations in the 54g that will allow this?
The WRT54G does not broadcast and is encrypted.
The wireless users are able to connect, but they are able to access all enterprise resources. What I would like, would be for the router to hand out it's own IP addresses separate from my internal DHCP IP's given out by my server.

No. You have to configure that on your routers/switches/firewall. Everything you plug into your existing LAN has access unless you restrict the access with the current LAN infrastructure, e.g. with managed switches or on your router.
Even if you could tweak the WRT to filter traffic into your existing LAN (with 3rd party firmware) it would be a high security risk. The LAN side of those cheap routers has only weak security mechanism and the risk of someone hacking into the router must be considered.

All possible if your LAN infrastructure supports it. But for that you have to post what it looks like and what devices you have.
Sidenote: Disabling the broadcast won't really secure the network. Encryption only if it is WPA2 or WPA.

  • How to connect WRT54G to another WRT54G

I have one of the above located in my shop about 200feet from my house and need to allow my daughter internet access. I have a few hundred feet of cat5e and was wondering if I can run a cable from the 'main' (54g directly connected to the net)to a second 54g located in my house. TIA

Good to hear! Just picked up a router today. Gonna take me a week or so to run the cable etc.
@gv -if your still following this thread...
A disturbing issue I have with a WUSB54GR that I tried to bring to tech supports attention but they ignored me..
I use Kaspersky and as an example I just reformatted and reloaded XP on my laptop for my daughter. When I load the 54GR software (and this was true with the CD that came with the adapter as well as the download available on the site, and connect the adapter, the adapter software tries to connect to both a google and yahoo site as well as some site in china! Of course I permanently block this. But I'd like to know whats going on and why this software does this.
If you know, I'd really appreciate hearing.

I've check remember network, my private network, but every time I close my laptop or restart it the wi-fi network changes

Either turn off sleep mode, or turn off your computer more.
3'rd option is to just re-start when using your computer after it sleeps.

  • Sqlplus Connection in Other Network Segment

After configuring the SQLnet, I am trying to use sqlplus to
connect Oracle 8i database located in another network segment
connected via a router, the error message displayed :
    ORA-12545: TNS:name lookup failure
But when I do a tnsping, it responded with an OK.

    Hi,
how do specify hostname in tnsnames.ora (hostname.domainname,hostname,ip-address)? Are you using DNS? If it is a DNS resolution problem, you could include a line like
    126.34.10.244 hostname.domainname.com hostname
    in your local hosts file.
It could be necessary to turn on tracing (level 16) to get more detailed informations.

  • Lost Connection to C&C Generals Zero Hour Online using the WRT54G v5 Wireless Network

I have this problem playing Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour online. I'm using the WRT54G v5 Wireless Network & when I'm in the game lobby, it kicks me off saying, "Lost connection to C&C Generals Zero Hour Online". This happens quite often variing on me entering & exiting rooms or other players entering & exiting rooms that I'm in. But it doesn't occur when I'm accually play a game with someone. It also does not happen at all when I'm connected directly to the internet connection so I know the network is causing it.
I've never had any problem with this game on any other wireless network types before. I've tried port forwarding with a static IP address, disabling firewalls,  upgrading firmware, etc... No good. I've done some google research & found that varios other people on other forum sites have the same problem, it also occurs on  another computer of mine.
Is there some kind of feature on this network that isn't on any others? One wireless network specificly that I've found that the game works on is the WRT54GS.
Any replies will be greatly appriecitated.
Message Edited by Me Myself AndPi on 02-20-2008 03:13 PM

Maybe I would if I hadn't stopped playing the game 3.5 years ago. You may want to check the date on those previous message. But here's what I remember:
Turns out nothing worked the fix the problem. Not turning of a firewall, not port forwarding, not updating fireware, nothing. There must be a jitter on the routher that triggers the game into thinking it gets disconnected.
Many other users on the forums posted the same problem with this one router too & no one ever figured out a solution. Eventually that router broke & my family bought the WRT54GS2, which worked perfectly.

    If your network configuration is:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] AEBS > (wireless) > Macs, then
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBS) w/High-Speed Cable Modem
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling
    - Power-off the Cable modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
    - Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
    - Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    - Power-on the computer(s)
Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.
    - (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451)
    Setup the AEBS
With the network components powered down, set up the AEBS, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: Ethernet
    - Configure: Using DHCP
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)
Once you verified that you can get Internet access for all of your computers, you should secure your wireless network. To do so, I suggest that you make these changes:
    AirPort tab (optional)
    - Create a closed network (checked)
    Change Wireless Security
    - Wireless Security: WPA Personal
Base Station Options - WAN Ethernet Port
    - Enable SNMP Access (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Configuration (unchecked)
    - Enable Remote Printer Access (unchecked)
    Wireless Options
    - Transmitter Power: 10%
    Access Control tab (optional)
    - + <add the computer(s) that will access this wireless network>

Although I'm connected to my Wi-Fi network my computer keeps "looking for new networks." How can I stop it from doing so when I'm working at home and don't want another network?

    You might want to update Safari to 3.12. I would empty the safari cache. (Safari>Empty Cache). Then quit Safari. System Preferences>Network>Show:Airport>TCP/IP. Insert the following into the DNS Servers box;
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then hit apply. Now launch Safari. You should also try powering down modem, router and Mac and power up in 2 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac.

  • My iPad suddenly stopped connecting to my home network. It shows the network to. Choose from but there is no IP address or other information on the network page. It is set on DHCP and proxy is set at auto. Do I have another setting wrong?

My iPad suddenly stopped working with my home network.  It shows the network to choose from but will not connect. When I look at details in that network it does not show IP address or any other info for the network.  Setting is on DHCP and http proxy is set on auto. Network is active and can connect on wife's iPad and other home computers.  Do I have another setting wrong?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Thinking of purchasing Time Capsule.... Can I access my documents saved on (Home Network) Time Capsule from another Network??? For instance, I can access my documents saved on MyBookLive (which is connected to my wifi) from ANY wifi connection... Like when I'm at school I can download documents stored on my MyBookLive at home.... I love this feature... But I would prefer to keep my products apple... So my question is can I access my documents from ANYWHERE with Time Capsule???
    Other products I have: MacBook (2009 limited edition it's aluminum) two iPad2 (2012) iPhone 5 (2012) two iphone4 iPod touch (2010) iPod Nano (2011)

Remote access to TC is allowed by BTMM and iCloud service.
Not for ipad or iphone.. only the Macbook although I think people have some work arounds..
NOTE. Your school firewall should block it. If I was still working in network admin I would. ie you are risking the whole network to get access to files unchecked for viruses.. and please don't just say Macs don't get viruses, you can still be the source of the infection even if you don't suffer the disease. Just a carrier.

  • WRT54G - limited or no connectivity - stalls at "aquiring network address"

Ok, so I decided to move my modem and router to a different location in the house and unplugged and re-set everything.  I went through the basic setup and finally got to the point where I can get internet when the pc is wired to the router.  Wireless, the pc is picking up the network fine but when it gets to "aquiring network address" it just stalls and eventually I get the message that I have limited or no connectivity.  When I righ click on the network connection icon and click "repair" connection it cannot verify network address.  My xbox 360 is also picking up the network but fine but will not connect.  Everything was working fine beforehand but I cannot for the life of me figure out what setting needs adjustment.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

FWIW, this is similar to a problem I just posted.  I got around the problem by selecting properties on the connection, and changing the settings under 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties' to use a specific IP address.
    These settings worked for me:
    IP 192.168.1.101
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    Preferred DNS server 192.168.1.1
    Alternate DNS server 192.168.1.2
I haven't yet found a solution to allow me to go back to obtaining an IP address automatically.  Did you?

  • I am connected to my wireless router which is secure.  For some reason I keep bouncing to another network presumably within range this network is not secure.  I have gone back in and clicked on the lock in order to lock it down to my secure network no lic

I connect to my secure wireless router network...while idle it connects to an unsecure network which is weak...I have to continually go to network selections and reconnect to my wireless router network.

  • How To Connect WRT54GS Wirelessly

I have a WRT54GS router that I want to setup wirelessly with my Windows XP desktop that only has a wireless adapter installed. There is no ethernet port on the pc. I have looked at the Stickys and read the FAQ but still haven't found an answer that clearly states how to setup the router without using an ethernet cable connected to the pc. I  want to have the ability to access the web based setup page as well so that I can secure my settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Generally, it's better to configure the router through a wired connection to be sure you configure your router and not someone else's... Thus if you have any wired ethernet device it's better to use that instead of trying a wireless only setup.
You can set it up only through wireless, however, you should make sure you are connected to your router in the beginning. Easiest test would be to unplug your router from power and check for available wireless networks. If there is still another "linksys" network to be seen, you must be extra careful.
Anyway, then plug your router back into power. Make your computer search for networks and connect to the unsecured "linksys" network. It's best to put the computer close to the router for this to make sure you connect to your router.
Then open the web interface at http://192.168.1.1/ default password should be "admin", no username required.
To be sure it's your router, go to the Status page, check it's really a WRT54GS and check the MAC address you see there. It should be the same as the one printed underneath the WRT (maybe one or two off in the last digit). If it's a completely different MAC address, check the LAN and wireless subtabs and the MAC addresses shown there. If all MAC addresses are completely different, unplug the router from power and see if your computer is still connected to the web interface or not.
Anyway, once you have established it's really the web interface of your router, check the firmware version and on the router and the one available online. It's best to upgrade the firmware before you do the configuration. If you have the latest firmware you have to configure the router. I would recommend the following steps:
    1. Go to the Wireless page. Change the SSID to something unique. Save settings.
    2. You'll loose the connection. Make your computer search for networks again. You should now see the new unique SSID. Connect to that network and open the web interface again.
    3. Next set up wireless security. Enable WPA2 Personal with AES encryption and set a strong passphrase. Save settings. You'll loose the connection again.
    4. Now you have to reconnect. Depending on your computer and the software use to configure the wireless you may have to remove the unique SSID first from the list of preferred network before you can reconnect. The computer usually remembers the SSIDs joined before and won't connect if the security settings don't match the one used before. But you have to find that out.
    5. As you are still using XP the computer may not support WPA2 or AES encryption (which is the best and strongest you can use today). Thus, if you are absolutely not able to reconnect the computer you will have to reset the router to factory defaults pressing the reset button for 30 seconds and start over. Choose WPA Personal with TKIP and a strong passphrase then. That should work. I would not recommend to use WEP which is easily cracked.
    6. Once you have managed to set up your desktop to connect to your secured wireless network you should make one more change: change the default password "admin" on the "Administration" setup page.
    7. Remember to clean up the list of preferred wireless networks, in particular, don't forget to remove the "linksys" network from that list. Otherwise your computer may automatically connect to a "linksys" network if one comes available in the proximity.
    That should be it.

  • Adding WRT54GS to a network that has BEFSR41 as wired router

    Hi --
I just bought a WRT54GS router and would like to use it to add wireless capability to a network that already has a BEFSR41
acting as the router. The network currently works fine (and, I know, I should save myself the hassle and just buy an access point,
but I'm living at home for only a few months, and when I move out, I'll need the router, so I'm hoping to make it work in the meantime
so I can have wireless access here).
To start, I set up the wireless router as indicated in the following link (which is Answer 358 on Linksys' "Easy Answer" page -- for
"How to connect a wireless router to a regular ethernet Linksys router):
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=358&p_created=1084209764&p_sid=k-BMgUbi&
    p_accessibility=0&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD00ODcmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJja
    F90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT00&p_li=&p_topview=1
(wow, there's a long URL for ya)
Essentially, that told me to use the Setup screen on the WRT to turn its DHCP feature off and then to assign the wireless router to 192.168.1.254.
    Ok, so far, so good.
That all worked, and the "link" light on the BEFSR router is on for the port where I'd plugged in a straight-through cable to the WRT wireless router.
Similarly, the lights on the WRT are on, for both "Internet" and "WLAN", so it looks like those two are connected okay.
I tried connecting to the wireless network then, but couldn't get it to pull up an IP number when I had my "Network Connections/TCPIP Properties" control
panel set to automatically obtain an IP number. I switched to assign a static IP number to the wireless connection -- which I'd already done
with the same computer's wired ethernet connection and to another computer that had a wired connection. After doing that, I was able to get the
wireless connection to connect with said static IP -- excellent signal strength, IP number 192.168.1.103 as assigned, everything looking good.
Only problem is I can't connect to the Internet using any program I tried. I tried "ping 192.168.1.103" and that worked.
Tried "ping 192.168.1.254" (the wireless router) and that worked. But try "ping 192.168.1.1" (the BEFSR router) and no luck.
Similarly, no luck when pinging (or trying to pull up with Firefox) www.yahoo.com. I've followed the "Easy Answer" that told me to turn
down some of the connection settings, but that didn't do anything.
However, the desktop that I had sitting there that was plugged into the BEFSR works fine and is able to connect to the 'net, no problem.
Again, the connection goes: Ethernet into cable modem. Cable modem into the BEFSR router. Cable from BEFSR router into three wired
desktops _and_ the WRT54GS. All the wired access points work (I'm typing on one now, from the same computer that can't get the wireless
access working) but the wireless won't.
Anyone have any ideas what's happening? It seems like something weird's going on between the wireless and wired routers (since
I can't ping from my computer to the wired router via the wireless connection -- and, also, because even when I plug a computer into the back
of the WRT router with a CAT5 cable, it doesn't work, so it seems like the problem isn't the wireless but rather something about traffic
going out/coming in through the WRT) but I can't figure out why. I'm sort of a novice at all this; able to find instructions and follow
directions but I'm at the limit of what I've figured out and can't figure out why there'd be a problem in between the WRT and the BEFSR
when it looks (from the solid green lights on both of them) like the connection is working just fine.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    -K

    - break the really long lines into shorter ones
    - add that I'm running Win XP on all of the machines I mention
    - add that I'm able to get to the BEFSR's web-based admin utility from the wired computers and to the WRT54's admin utility from the
wireless connection and things look okay there
    - add that I've tried running the set-up utility that came on the installation CD but that just gets stuck partway through the process]Message Edited by Kilrathi on 07-06-2006 08:34 PM

I have almost the same issue just a bit reversed and cant figure it out. I have the wireless WRT54GS as the main router. Setup as PPPOE for dsl (which is plugged into the internet port)DCHP enabled. MTU auto size 1432. ip 192.168.1.1
Advanced routing operating mode gateway, interface lan & wireless.
Second router BEFSR41 V3 set to auto search for ip. ip assigned 192.168.1.2 Nat enabled, DCHP disabled. tried to get it with from first router port 2 to 2nd router internet port. Worked for some time then power went out and now both the computers connected to the 2nd router are offline. Tried your guys idea of router 1 port 2 to router 2 port 2 but that didnt work.
Edit: Fiddled with it, smacked a buncha resets and such. Works now in the port 2 to port 2 deal. GG all.
