Connecting WRT54G to NETGEAR WNR3500

i wished to make my NETGEAR WNR3500 as a repeater to a motel-based router of LINKSYS WRT54G.  I am based here at Roundup, Montana to do some business and i found out that the wireless signal is so low that i have intermittent connection.  Since i have a BUFFALO WHR54GS router at home and it is now busted, i bought a netgear router/repeater to be used at my home.
Since I'm still here at the motel, I plan to use the router as a repeater for a while to boost the motel's signal.  The owner of the motel give me a go signal to use my router as a repeater but when I'm going to ask the router's specs, he didn't let me modify anything on it or look up the specs.
anyway, since there is a linksys range expander product that is capable of (duh) expanding the wireless range of routers, i didn't bought one because it will be only used for my stay here in the roundup.
What I need help is what to setup with the netgear router as it has the repeater capability to enhance the range of the linksys router.
-I got the MAC address of the linksys router by doing a IP-MAC translation software from the internet via ipconfig /all.
-It has a WEP key which I have already from the owner of the motel.
-The channel is what i don't know (any software or command from windows to know the channel of the linksys router without looking it up at setup?).
Hope someone will help me on this problem. I posted this at the NETGEAR FORUMS also.

Get wireless client utility from boingo, and it should show you all details about wireless signls available.

  • How does HP 8500 connect to Netgear WNR3500 router?

I currently have an old HP printer connected (USB) to an Apple Airport for a one printer for our house.  Can the 8500 connect to the Netgear router, directly to a cable modem, without a computer (like the Airport can)....or not?

Yes, you can.  Depending on the model of 8500 (there are three), it can connect either with a wired (Ethernet) connection (all of them) or the two higher end ones can connect wirelessly.
You do not want to connect a printer to a router with USB unless it is only a printer (no scan function).  USB ports on routers only support printing, not scanning.  Ethernet or wireless support print and scan for all computers on the router.  It does not matter how the printer or computers are connected to the router, they can all communicate with each other.

  • How do I set up a Netgear WNR3500 as wireless extender with the Airport Extreme as my main router?

I just got the Airport Extreme yesterday because the Netgear couldn't hold all the computers we had on it. Now the Apple router works great, except for it is downstairs in the basement because our home computer is ancient and only connects via ethernet cord. So the Wi-Fi upstairs is only one bar on my smart phone way in the corner far from the router. I did some research and found out that the Netgear WNR3500 can be used as a wireless extender. I want to hook it up on the main floor away from the Airport where the signal is strong so it will still get great connection but will be able to transmit that same great connection a little bit farther. I just want to know how to do that.
         Thank You!

The Netgear WNR3500 has mixed reviews at best and their customer support is unformly regarded as poor.
Interesting how different people have different experiences - although I never needed their tech support, so I would not have an opinion on that, this wireless router was the absolute best router I've ever had. I had to stop using it because I changed ISP's and was forced to use their modem/router combination (nothing else will work with their new V-DSL service); however, I've kept the router in case I should need to use it as an extender (which I haven't). In any case, unlike D-Link, Belkin, or Link-Sys which would at most give me one bar in my livingroom and the signal would cut out intermittently (livingroom is 50 ft from study), the Netgear showed all the bars and was steady as a rock. Configuring it with MAC filtering on their website was much easier than my current one as well.

    Hi Roger,
I have checked and can confirm my router supports PPPoE and ethernet WAN. I can successfully connect the router to the vdsl modem and the internet light on the router turns green after i enter the username and password into the router. This to me means its successfully connect to the BT network but when i try to go to any website, i get the following message.
You have been connected to this page due to one of the following reasons. You must now shut down your browser and Internet applications before attempting to reconnect.

    Or
You are testing your connection to your Service Provider using ‘bt_test_user@domain’ where domain is your Service Provider domain name.
    Or

  • Trouble Connecting MacBook to Netgear WGT624

Hello, I just got a MacBook and am having trouble connecting to my netgear WGT624 wireless router. We've had the router for some time with a PC connected via ethernet. This is the first time trying to connect wirelessly.
    I click on System Preferences.
    Then Network.
    Then Connect.
Under the Network drop down menu, I have two Network choices available...our router's name, and another name, probably a nearby wireless router.
When I choose our router, I get the pinwheel thingy spinning around, and then a message: "There was an error joining the AirPort network "router name here."
When I click on the other nearby network name, I get connected, and the signal strength is 4 out of 15.
What do I need to do to connect to my home's wireless router?

No need to re-install software. There should be a reset button or hole somewhere on the router. Either press the button or use a paper clip inside the hole for about 10 seconds. This should reset your router to all the default settings.
From there, once you log onto your router's setup screen, you will need to put in your regular settings (username, password, security settings, etc.). If you use security, your neighbor should not be able to access to your wireless connection.
    Good Luck.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

  • I cannot get my Apple TV to connect to my Netgear router. I can get it to connect if I disable the security for the password but once I enable it it won't connect.

I have an issue with connecting to my Netgear router. I have tried a lot of different options on my router but the only way I can get it to connect is to disable my security password and I don't want to leave my network exposed without a password. I have tried resetting, updating my software and restarting the Apple TV. I just bought this last week and haven't gotten to use it yet.

then it throws and error message.
    What is the error message?

  • Help- can't connect airport to Netgear router?

I posted yesterday then thought I had solved the problem but I hadn't so here goes again:
I've never used Airport before, so i'm green
I have a G4 sawtooth tower connected to a Netgear wireless router MR814v2.
I don't think I have an airport card in the tower unless it came as orig equipment.
Anyway 2 G4's ( both OS 10.3.9) are connected to the router by ethernet cable and a PC laptop has a Netgear wireless card that also connects it.
The 2 G4's share internet, file sharing and printer access - no problem.
The PC laptop shares internet, but I've been unable to figure out how to get it to share printer or files - not too big a deal -
Now I just bought a 1.5GHz Powerbook that has Airport Extreme in it (running Tiger) (second hand no apple care anymore). I hit the little icon in the upper left corner for airport, and it shows my Network - Good.
But when I click on the network it asks for a WEP Password - I have no idea what Password to use.
I've tried everything connected to my router that I can think of, everything related to adminstrative passwords and I always get - "error connecting to network" ( or something like that)
Do have to set something else up, create a password, or is it another problem?
I found on the netgear website that I needed to download a firmware update for the router to make it work with airport extreme.
OK I did that, still doesn't work.
I can connect fine to my neighbors linksys network that doesnot require a password.
Also do I need to set up another email address for this machine?
I can't log into the same email address on 2 machines at the same time can I?

Open the Netgear configuration page. Go to the wireless settings. On my Netgear, the encryption password is visible.
If the password isn't visible on yours, simply change the password to something new.
Also do I need to set up another email address for this machine?
    No
I can't log into the same email address on 2 machines at the same time can I?
Sure. If you are using an IMAP account and have the settings to leave the messages on the server everything will work well. If you are using a POP account it can become confusing because the first one to check mail will get messages and remove them from the server. So one may see messages that the other doesn't.

  • Cannot automatically connect to my Netgear Router

    Hi,
When I turn on my Mac Book Air (2011) it will not automatically connect to my Netgear WNDR3400 on either the 2.4ghz or 5ghz bandwidth.   When I over at a friends house I able to connect automatically to a linksys or cisco router.   Do you know what the issue could be?   Thank you.
    David

Someone from the Netgear forum solved my issue.   My mac air was trying to use WPA instead of WPA2.   Once I removed the saved network and added it back it works great.

  • Connecting WRT54G and Motorolla SBV5220

    Dear all,
I have tremendous problems having WRT54G workign after cable Motorolla router. If I connect motorolla directly via cable to the PC, there is internet. if I connect WRT54G to Motorolla unit and former to the computer, there is none, neither wired or wireless. I explored variety of tricks but nothing helped. Suspisioucly in statu IP never become a number for WRT54G. I restarted and reset WRT54G numerous times, I also changed it's IP to 192.168.2.1 in case it might a conflict with Motorolla. Nothing works
    thanks
    My WRT54G settings are default, 8.2.03 build 008, <script type="text/javascript">// Capture(month.num11) // </script> Nov. 8, 2007 , automatic DHCP

Well....you have two choices. I would recommend that you unplug your motorola modem from the electrical outlet for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes plug it back in, now try.
If that doesn't work, then clone your pc's mac address. search forum for instructions.

  • My iPhone 4 will not connect to my Netgear home wi-fi

I have a Verizon iPhone 4.  I cannot connect to my Netgear home wi-fi.  My iMac connects perfectly as do other computers in the house.  I can see the network in the wi-fi settings area and have input my password 10 digits but it will not connect.  Connects to other wi-fi networks fine.  Netgear's support forums aren't much help.  Has anyone had this issue and been able to overcome it?

This can usually  be fixed by rebooting the router (turn it off for 15 seconds). If that doesn't fix it update the firmware (which you said you have done, but check the version in the router and compare to the latest version on Netgear's web site).
The other possibility is that you have enabled MAC filtering on the router and the iPhone's WiFi address is not in the "allow" table on the router.
As it works with other networks the problem is your router, not the phone.

  • WRT54G not connecting properly with Netgear switch

I have a WRT54Gv4 which I've been using as both a WAP and a wired switch. I now have too many wired devices to plug into the built-in switch, so I tried to expand the WRT54G using a Netgear FS108 8-port switch. The WRT54G and the FS108 both work perfectly well when not connected to each other, but all hell breaks loose as soon as I plug them together. If I plug the cable into a regular port on the FS108, then the "network activity" light on the corresponding WRT54G port blinks rapidly and continuously. If I plug the cable into the uplink port on the FS108, then the "network activity" light on the FS108 port blinks rapidly and continuously. I get around 50% packet loss trying to communicate between a computer plugged into the WRT54G and another computer plugged into the FS108. I've already tried 3 different cables between the WRT54G and the FS108, and all have exhibited the same problem. I have also tried all kinds of power cycling of the different devices, and nothing I have done has worked.
    So I have two questions:
    1) Has anyone successfully connected a Netgear FS108 to a WRT54G? If so, how did you do it?
    2) Has anyone successfully used a Linksys SD208 or EZXS88W switch with a WRT54G? I'm going to buy one of these to replace the FS108 if nobody can answer the first question.
    Thanks.

If you have McAfee anti-virus, then I guarantee IT IS a McAfee + Vista issue. In the Firewall settings for Vista, enable Peer-to-Peer and add and enable ports TCP 5357, TCP 5358, UDP 3702, TCP 2869, UDP 1900, UDP 137, UDP 138, TCP 139, TCP 445. THEN, disable Vista Firewall and enable McAfee Firewall. Click on Internet & Network Protection and then Configure. This is where the McAfee Firewall protection is enabled. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on Grant Full Access and apply. Click OK, close out and reboot. Your system will utilize the McAfee Firewall and not the Microsoft one, and as long as you have WAP encryption and a private network, your Linksys router will allow printer and file sharing and be protected.

  • Why won't my iPad connect to my Netgear router?

Good evening.  Until yesterday, I had a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and life was good and devices connected.  Then, after 10 years of service, that guy died.  Well, now I have this Netgear WNR2000v3 router.  I got it set up last night.  My MacBook Pro connects, my Kindle connects, my Android phone connects, and even my ******** "smart" TV connects.  My iPad, however, won't connect at all.  Steps I've taken:
    - The iPad's MAC address is definitely in the list of allowed addresses on the router.
    - The router's firmware is definitely up-to-date.
    - The iPad definitely connects to other networks (like the one at work).
    - I've powered the router and iPad on and off.
    - I've reset the network settings to defaults.
I've also read through all of http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 and I don't think I missed anything.
Here are the wireless settings on my router:
    - SSID broadcast enabled.
    - Channel: auto.
    - Mode: up to 300 Mbps.
    - Security:WPA2-PSK [AES].
    - Fragmentation length: 2346.
    - CTS/RTS threshold: 2347.
    - Preamble mode: automatic.
    - WPS settings:
        - Disable router's pin is not checked.
        - Keep existing wireless settings is checked.
        - I don't use this, however.  I attach all of my other devices without it.
    - Wireless card access list (MAC filter):
        - On and the iPad's MAC address is there.
Is there anything else?  Is there some known issue and known fix?  I see a few other people have asked about the same router on the web, but there aren't any useful answers that I haven't tried.
    Thanks in advance!
    Jeremy

I had.  Several times.  However, I just solved it.  It's really quite embarrassing.  I wish I could erase this thread from history   Although I checked and re-checked and re-re-checked what I typed in the MAC filter for the iPad, I still buggered one character.  F is not the same as E and just one incorrect character is all it takes to throw off the MAC filter.  Correct address entered, iPad is on the network.  I am going to go quit IT work now.  Thanks all!

  • I Have Spent (No Kidding) About 20 Hours Trying to Connect WRT54GS

I am trying to connect my new wireless laptop (HP Pavilion dv6985se) to your WRT54GS router.  I have DSL internet with Verizon over a dedicated line.  My modem is a Westell model E90-810015-06. Your instructions show the router being plugged into a PC tower, which I do not own.  No matter how many, many, many times I go through the steps for installing the router, I always end up with the router attached to my laptop- not wireless.  There is no way for me to connect the modem to the router using two cables as your instructions show. My modem only has the ethernet outlet and a usb outlet (which I don't have a cable for because I didn't need it).  I should not have to buy a flash drive to make this work. At least that's what HP says. When I connect the modem to the router,  I get an error message on my monitor saying I am no longer connected to the internet and I should check my connections. The ethernet light never comes on on the router. I never get past step 4/4 (waiting for router).  At this point, the process freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to end the program.  At the end of it all my computer 1) can't find the router 2) Is disconnected from the internet 3) Can't locate a wireless connection.  I am so ready to throw this in the trash and never buy Linksys again.  I have been to a bazillion websites, and many, many people are having similar problems.

First, do not use the setup CD (Easylink Advisor) as it does not work.
Go here if you have a cable connection.
Go here if you have DSL connection.
Go here for your wireless connection.
