Connecting Xbox 360 to B540 through RF socket?

I am on a mission to connect an Xbox 360 to my B540 which does not have any inputs such as HDMI or even AV.  My options seem to be using a video capture card or a RF Modulator/Adaptor (since the machine does have an aerial socket for the built-in TV Tuner to receive signals).
The video capture card route is a no-go area because of the lag effect in actually playing games, so I have decided upon getting a RF Modulator or RF adaptor to do the job.
My question is has anyone connected an Xbox 360 or other game console to a Lenovo B540 (or similar screen with only RF input) using this method? What was the image quality like? I know the outdated RF signal gives poor image quality on older, non-digital, TVs, but I  wonder if there would be an improvement on this with the B540's HD screen...
Another image quality related question is, are general RF Modulators better for my purpose than the all-in-one RF adaptors sold specifically for converting game console video to RF?
Thanks.

Go to Solution.

Thanks again caveman, but I'm not trying to control the game console by connecting its controllers to the B540, I'm trying to output the video image from console onto the B540 screen via a RF modulator (since RF is the only video input connection on my B540). Therefore the game controllers need only be supported by the xbox itself
Anyway I took a chance and got it to work! The resulting video quality is only standard definition and sound is mono, but since I'm an unfussy, occasional gamer with no burning desire to buy a new tv just to play videogames, it is an acceptable fix and the B540 HD screen definitely helps to display the limited RF video signal to best effect. Of course, life would be much easier if my B540 actually had a HDMI in connection, but I digress...
Here's how I did it...
1) You can get an RF adaptor specifically made for game consoles, but from what I gather they provide poor image quality, even for RF. So I took a chance and picked up a Programmable Universal Modulator from Maplins (£29.99) which is used more generally to connect video devices to older TV's that only have RF aerial sockets.
2) The composite lead from the 360 goes into the modulator box, which connects to the B540 screen with a regular coaxial aerial cable. Then I opened the AverMedia TV Player software, went into Analog settings and configured the signal type to cable. Did an analog channel scan and found the xbox picture.
3) As you can see in the screen grabs*, the fullscreen image needs slight horizontal adjustment but everything is visible and there are no cut offs. The Windows 8 desktop bar also appears across the bottom of the screen. I have yet to figure out how to get rid of it.
You can also resize the game window to have picture-in-picture on the screen if you prefer. Very handy for multi-tasking, haha!
Getting an Xbox 360 to work with my B540 took an evening of trial and error. The results are not without quirks. As mentioned, the picture and sound quality is obviously not as good as HD. Furthermore, if you try removing and replacing the coaxial cable while the xbox and PC are connected it can result in image glitching and a one or two second delay between controller input and on-screen movement. So don't mess with the cable after tuning in.

  • Connecting XBOX 360 Wirelessly to WRT300N V1.1

If you suffer from a slow connection when using your Xbox 360 usb wireless adapter and the wrt300n router, then fret no more! I called both xbox and linksys and below is what I came up with, which made my connection to Xbox Live work properly. This may even work with other routers as well
Setup for WRT300N V1.1 connected wirelessly to an XBOX 360 USB Wireless Adapter.
Connection Type: High Speed Cable Internet.
    Select Setup
     Select Basic Setup
Change the MTU setting to manual, edit size to be 1365.
    Save
    Select Security
Deselect the “Filter Anonymous Internet Requests”
    Save
    Select Applications & Gaming
    Select PortRange Forwarding
For the first port input the following:
    Start ~ EndPort: 88 to 88
    Protocol: UDP
    To IP Address: 100
    Check Enable
    Application Name: xbox1
For the second port input the following:
    Start ~ EndPort: 3074 to 3074
    Protocol: Both
    To IP Address: 100
    Check Enable
    Application Name: xbox2
    Save
    Select Administration
    Disable Upnp
    Save
This should allow for a smooth connection.

Thank you for your reply.  However, there is still some confusion on my part.
How does setting up a static IP on the PC help me connect to the Xbox 360 wirelessly?   Please explain.
The static IP Doesn't help you connect wirelessly, it helps you set up port forwarding properly.   So that is step 1
Step 2 would be for you connecting wirelessly, and I am pretty sure the actiontec is already security enabled, so if it is then you would look on the router itself for a silverish sticker that has an ESSID and a WEP KEY   When going through your xbox set up you will have a list of networks to choose from, make sure what you try to connect to matches the ESSID found physically on the router, and then it will ask you for a password or a network key and that is when you put in your WEP key.   That would get you on wirelessly.
the static ip is exclusively for your port forwarding and should only really be used if once your connected to the xbox wirelessly - if it's still having trouble.   that would be when you would set up the port forwarding as I kinda described earlier.  so you put in your xbox the static ip address, and then your router will route traffic to and from it based on that ip.   mine didn't need the static ip it would connect wirelessly automatically or via dhcp, but when the network dragged or i got bad performance, that is when I went to port forwarding.

  • Trouble connecting xbox 360 to e2000 wirelessly

I have an original Xbox 360 (wifi not built in) and the external wifi adapter.  With all previous Cisco routers, I have been able to connect my Xbox successfully and quickly.  Now, however, I am experiencing much difficulty.
I have verified I am using the latest firmware for my router, and configured my router like this: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=082ee344b4754044b1ff95fcd78b5305_4576.xml&pid=80&r... in terms of ports.  I have also used the Xbox's MAC address to give a static IP address via my router's DNS.
The Xbox can see both my main wireless SSID and my guest SSID but cannot connect to either.

Hi Gammit, lower security to WPA2/WPA Mixed Personal. Set channel to 3,6, or 9 . Make sure firmware is up to date.

  • TROUBLE CONNECTING XBOX 360 WIRELESSLY TO MAC AIRPORT EXTREME NETWORK

Hi, and thanks for looking. Here are the facts in a nutshell.
    1. Xbox 360, set up for wireless connection.
    2. Wireless network, all apple equipment. Main Base station is the new Airport Extreme, hooked to a Cable Modem (Toshiba), with transmission via Comcast Internet.
    3. All wireless connections between Mac computers, and Dell PC's working flawlessly, including multiple printers.
4.Cannot connect to XBox 360 because when attempting to wireless network not recognized. When editing Wireless connection, by manually typing in the Network Name, and the WPA password, still does not work.
    5. Incidentally, I have had this XBox connected before, until I purchased the new Airport Extreme Station (the rectangular one). What has changed? For one thing I added WPA security, and secondly, I got rid of a Netgear Router that I had been using for better distance, at the end of the Airport extreme chain. So the equipment is slightly different, and the security is definately different.
So please, someone tell me what I must do to have the XBox connect to a Mac AEx Network, that has WPA security, and then, how do I get XBox to recognize a computer.
Prior to this, without security, and with a netgear router as an ethernetted remote to an Airport Extreme, the XBox could get on the network, and see a Dell computer for programming. Now it can't do any of that. Sorry to be so long winded.
I've tried everything including turning the firewall off the Dell. I even tried putting the Netgear back on the network by ethernet, which then allowed the 360 to log on wirelessly, but, still could not see the Dell, even with the firewall off. Thank you

You should really search for your question in the Airport forum found here <http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=140>. The forum you've posted in is dedicated to Macintosh and Windows compatibility issues. While XBox 360 and Windows are both Microsoft products they are not the same thing.
I think you'll find that many folks with the new Airport Extreme base stations are having compatibility issues with many devices when trying to use any security. The best workarounds are to either hide the SSID and restrict access using the network hardware address while using no wireless security, plug the XBox 360 directly into the station with an Ethernet cable or not use the new Airport base station altogether.
Good luck finding your answer! bill

  • Connecting XBox 360 Live to Verizon netbook

I purchased an XBox 360 Live for my son for Christmas.  I cannot get it to connect. We originally had Verizon Wireless Broadband w/ an internal modem. Thanks. So what would be your advice?
Cable or DSL service, or Verizon FIOS if available.
Satellite will have latency problems as bad as or worse than mobile broadband.
As stated above, mobile broadband has issues with latency and with VERY low monthly usage caps compared to cable/DSL.  (Most cable/DSL providers institute throughput caps and not monthly usage caps but that's changing, however most that have caps now have set them high enough that only hardcore torrenters can hit them - e.g. I've heard 250GB thrown around as a number for Comcast.)
*disclaimer* I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of Best Buy, Geek Squad, nor of any of their affiliate, parent, or subsidiary companies.

  • Connecting XBOX 360 to WRT54G wireless network

I have a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT 54G)  and I have set up a wirless network with my xbox 360. (sucessfully connected to Live).
I have windows XP and latest Zune software installed and thought it would be easy to connect my XBOX to my Zune. 5 days later (and one hour wasted with tech support) and I am still stuck.
I have enabled sharing in the zune software and it does indeed recognize that a 360 is available. But when I try to connect the 360 it cannot find the PC.
I have closed Zone alarm and windows firewall is not running.
What do I need to tell the linksys router to enable the XBOX to see my PC?
The XBOX help says the following need to be enabled?
Port Name Protocol Scope 2869 UPnP Framework TCP My network (subnet) only 1900 UPnP Framework UDP My network (subnet) only 10284 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only 10283 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only 10282 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only 10281 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only 10280 Windows Media Connect UDP My network (subnet) only 10243 Windows Media Connect TCP My network (subnet) only
The xbox help tells me I need to enable ports??? If I do this then I am only able to enter the 4th number ie AAA.BBB.CCC.DD       What should I enter for DD, 1? Will this fix it?
Please help and put me out of my misery.

well...you need to assign a static ip add on the x-box ( 192.168.1.10 ) . Also , assign static DNS addresses ( from the router's status page )

  • WRT54G v6 - Troubles connecting XBOX 360 to XBOX Live?

I just purchased a new XBOX 360 and I'm finding that I can't connect to XBOX Live using my WRT54G v6 (firmware version 1.01.1).
If I connect the XBOX 360 directly to my DSL modem, I can connect to XBOX Live.
If I try to connect the XBOX 360 to the WRT54G v6 (using either a direct ethernet connection, or using the XBOX 360 Wireless adapter) I can't connect to XBOX Live.
When I run the diagnostic tests on the XBOX 360, all of my connection tests pass with flying colours.
Has anyone else had this problem?  How do you fix it?

hi, i have just recently bought the wireless adapter for the 360, and i keep getting boot off xbox live when ever my brother turns his PS3 on or off. even when a house call is made or comes in i get booted. if my brother doesnt turn his PS3 on or a call doesnt come in or go out, i can play fine, but once one of those happens i get booted. noone knows what i can do, xbox told me to call linksys, i was never able to talk to a real person on the phone, just machines. does any one have a clue??? i was told to change my NAT, but it's open, so i dont know what to do.

  • WRT610N 5ghz xbox 360 wireless N adapter won't connect (xbox 360 "Wireless Mode = Not connected")

    Hi folks,
Looks like some other folks have reported similar. Haven't seen if an answer has been found anywhere.
    WRT610v2 running latest firmware.
xbox 360 sees both the 2.4 network (ssid = network1) and the 5.0 network (ssid network2) when it does its scan.
Initially, xbox showed network strength for 2.4 network at 3 out of 4 bars and 5.0 network at 1 out of 4 bars.
Connects to 2.4 network just fine
Won't pull an ip address and reports "Not connected" when I select the 5.0 network.
I tweaked the wireless settings per some suggestions I found in this forum and now it shows the 5.0 network at 4 out of 4 bars signal strength. Also turned security on and off and xbox 360 reported the changes in security on the 5.0 network.
So the xbox 360 is definitely seening the 5.0 network. and can tell if it is running WPA2 or not.
If it can see the 5.0 network and recognizes what security and network type (infrastructure) is set, would would stop it from connecting to the WRT610n router and getting an IP address? No mac filters or firewalls are set and, again, connects just fine and gets an ip address if I select the 2.4 (network1 ssid) instead.
Won't work if I manually set IP, subnet, gateway, dns either.
Have tried mixed versus dedicated on the N radio...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    thanks!
    rjb

    Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. Tried as you suggested but still no luck. Seems to see the 5ghz ssid just fine with plenty of strength but just will not pull an ip address or even connect if I manually assign.
    Any other thoughts?
thanks again for taking the time to respond.

i cant connect my linksys wireless router (model wrt54gs) to my xbox 360, can anyone help.

Are you trying to connect wirelessly or wired?
Try being more specific to the problem like is your ip or dns failing maybe
(You do know that you have to buy a game adapter for the 360 if you are trying to play wirelessly cause its not built in.)

  • Creating wireless network (& connecting Xbox 360)

    Hello,
I have an iMac G5 and a newly acquired Xbox 360..unfortunately both are in sperate rooms.
I have a Sppedtouch USB modem and would like to create a wireless network, so I could access Xbox Live downstairs.
Any recommendations on a router (?) and also would Xbox Live be available if the iMac wasn't turned on?
I apologise in advance for my lack of knowldge!
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

No , you have to run ethernet cable from your modem to the router .. and then it has 4 wired access PORTS for you to plug your systems in with ethernet (or , since you want to run the 360 from downstairs , wirelessly) . You dont have Ethernet on the iMac or modem ? i thought they came with gigabyte ethernet . If you can't get to it with ethernet and need usb , you need a different model router which i'm sure someone else in here will have info on for you .
    cheers

  • Connecting xbox 360 wirelessly...HELP!!

i setup airport extreme the other day and easily connected all my devices including ps3.
My xbox which is downstairs doesn't pick up the router, i changed the settings to WPA/WPA2 so that the xbox picks it up as i heard
it needs to be on WPA. it still doesn't connect even if i manually enter the connection details.
at first i thought it was a distance issue but if i connect my old netgear router, the xbox picks it up fine.
can anyone offer some advice as i need to play CoD online

are the wireless computers connecting to the wireless network of the router ?? if yes, settings on the router are fine...try troubleshooting the x-box itself...
in order to access the MAC filtering list .. access the router web ui from the wired computer...and go to the wireless tab and click on "wireless mac filtering" subtab ...
