Connecting XP laptop to airport express SUCCESS

My partners Acer laptop running XP would connect and show a strong signal but would not allow internet connection with internet explorer.
After reading lots of posts and seeing (and trying for about 8 hours) about ten different answers...

Chapter 3 AirPort Network Designs 61
On a computer using Windows:
Make sure the base station is connected to the Internet. The computers on your
AirPort network cannot connect to the Internet if your base station is not connected
to the Internet.
Check your Internet connection using your computer. If you can’t connect with your
computer, the problem may be with your Internet connection.
Right-click the wireless connection icon, and choose Status.
Check to make sure that the computer has joined the AirPort network created by
your base station.
Restart your computer. This renews the IP address you receive from the base station.
The IP addresses should be in the range of 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.1.200, 172.16.1.2 to
172.16.1.200, or 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200 depending on the address scheme the base
station uses.
If the base station is set up as a DHCP server, make sure the “Obtain an IP address
automatically” checkbox is selected in the General pane of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Properties. Right-click the wireless connection icon and click Properties. Click Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties
I did everything but I think the guts of it is
“Obtain an IP address
automatically” checkbox is selected in the General pane of Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Properties.
Good Luck

I had this same problem with my 2wire gateway when I switched to Mac. My roommate has XP, and two PC's with Linux. When the Mac was added to the network, it all went to ****. It has something to do with Apple's WEP configuration. I think. My roommate is the guru, not me. We set it up with WPA, and my MBP worked flawlessly,. Although XP and Linux could connect, they were both plagued by random drops and poor performance.
We tried the Linksys (IIRC) and it did the same thing.
To make a very long story short, we bought the Extreme draft-N and put it in WPA. Mandriva, Sabayon, XP and OS X are all able to connect to the internet and playing nice with each other (with a few exceptions)....

  • Connecting a Laptop to Airport Express via Ethernet Cable

I have an old PowerBook G3 and I do not have a wireless card for it. My plan was to connect it, via Ethernet cable to my airport express which is on my home wireless network (DSL to Mac Mini to AirPort Express via built-in AirPort).
My question is can I make this work? After buying the Ethernet cord, all my reading of the AirPort Express manual seems to suggest that the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express is to only be used as an input port, not as an output. Is this correct?
If I cannot connect my laptop this way, could anyone suggest a wireless card that is compatible with this slightly antiquated, yet very useful machine?

Hello Brian Hunt1. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have an old PowerBook G3 and I do not have a wireless card for it. My plan was to connect it, via Ethernet cable to my airport express which is on my home wireless network (DSL to Mac Mini to AirPort Express via built-in AirPort).
Unfortunately, the network configuration your describing, where you would use OS X's Internet Sharing feature to share the Mac Mini's wired Internet connection wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), won't work.
If I cannot connect my laptop this way, could anyone suggest a wireless card that is compatible with this slightly antiquated, yet very useful machine?
Only the "Pismo" PowerBook G3 is capable of using the original AirPort card. If you have this model, then the following DIY instructions will show you how to install it.
If this isn't your model, then check out the following vendor offerings:
    o QuickerTek
    o hField Technologies' Wi-Fire

  • Can't connect HP laptop with Airport Express

My gov't agency has just allowed employees to connect to its intranet through wireless connections.  I have an Airport Express which I use for my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad.  No problems.  The work computer is an HP laptop running Windows.  I contacted our tech support and they didn't know what to do and suggested that it may be an Apple problem and that the AirPort will not connect to non-Apple devices.  Is this true?  Do I need to buy a new wireless router?  Anyone with any suggestions on what I can do to get the AirPort to work?
    Thanks in advance.

All wireless routers must adhere to the same standards for wireless networks, so there is nothing unique about the wireless network that the AirPort Express is creating. Visiting relatives have no trouble connecting their PCs to the Apple wireless network here at the house.
Chances are, the Windows Firewall or anti-virus applicaton on the HP may be blocking the attempted connection as a security measure.
As a last resort, you could also try reducing the security level on the AirPort Express in case the HP is not able to connect to the most secure wireless networks.
To do this from your MacBook.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located below the row of icons
Change the Security setting to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Click Update at the lower right and wait 40-45 seconds for the Express to restart

  • Can't connect my laptop to airport express

    HELLO,
IN MY HOUSE I HAVE A AIRPORT EXPRESS WORKIN WITH TO LAPTOPS AND A DESSKTOP ALL ARE APPLE WITH MAC, I BOUGHT A TOSHIBA SATELLITE WITH WINDOWS XP, I CAN SEE THE NETWORK BUT WHEN I TYPE THE PASSWORD IT SAYS THAT IS CONNECTED BUT I CAN'T ENTER TO ANY WEB PAGES, my coumputer has the 802.11 g anb protocol so it makes it compatible with the router, DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING?
    THANK YOU

I am following this as I have a friend who is having the same issue and is running XP Home with SP3. He is on an Acer Aspire 3620. I keep telling him to just go and buy a Mac, but he says he would rather stay offline....LOLOL...(he's been offline for a month now) Anyway... He lives too far away for me to go and help, but everything I have advised him to do has failed. So I'm waiting to see who comes up with an answer here... I am about to tell him to just re-build (re-install windows) his PC.

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

  • Can't connect to an extended Airport Express?

My network is set up in the following way (see photo) 1 Time Capsule + 2 Airport Express to extend the network.
No computers or devices can connect to the Airport Express named "AE02"? They all ONLY connect to the middle Airport Express called "AE01" even though they are like 20 cm from AE02??
What am I doing wrong? Anyone else has this problem?
    Thanks

Thanks, Huge bummer... How come the Airport Expresses connect that way if not allowed?!
I found the answer just like 'Tesserax' pointed out.

can I set up to connect 2 or 3 airport expresses to have a stronger wifi signal for a larger area?

Theoretically yes. It will really depend on your situation. Please review the following Apple Support article to understand what is possible with the AirPort base stations and post back with any questions or help in setting up your extended network.

Can't connect (wireless) to my Airport Express anymore with iBook, iPad or iPhone. It still recognizes the printer on the iBook (bonjour), but not on my Windows notebook (work). The only device that still connects via wireless is the PlayStation 3.

  • Can I connect an A1084 model Airport Express using current version of Airport Utility

Can I connect an A1084 model Airport Express using current version of Airport Utility?

You will need an older 5.x version of AirPort Utility to be able to administer the older AirPort Express.  That would mean that you need to have....or be able to borrow for 10-15 minutes......a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

Anyone has an idea how to connect and configure my Airport express to an internet range extender which is plugged into mains?

You can connect it but with ethernet cable. You can not connect it by wifi to extend the range a second time.
BTW AE is rather sensitive to connect by wifi to non-apple wifi routers.

  • Connecting to Comcast using airport express

My wife bumped the Airport express router that connects to our comcast modem.  I unplugged both, reset the comcast modem, waited 3-4 minutes, then plugged the airport express router back in the socket.  Went downstairs, couldnt connect to the internet according to the airport express utility application.  Green light on airport express, orange light on the "Internet" in the utility.  Called Comcast, total waste of time after 1.5 hrs of "tech support"  was told to call Apple .  Computer is 4 years old, has been working fine up to this  point.  Apple wants me to pay $49 for support.  nothing guaranteed.
Any suggestions?  I've tried turning off IMAC, running upstairs, unplug airport express, unplug modem, push reset on modem, wait 4 minutes for modem to fire back up, plug airport express back in, run downstairs, turn on IMAC, run airport express utility and same result, green for airport express router, orange for internet.
Opened up Safari, tried network diagnostics troubleshooting, it eventually asks me if we are DHC? or PPPoE.  I choose PPPoE and enter comcast for service provider, enter username and password (as verified by Comcast) during my 1.5 hour session.  trys to connect.  goes back to same screen of do we have DHCP or PPPoE.
    Frustrating!
Neighbor told me to plug IMAC directly into Modem and see what happens using an Ethernet hard connection.  Will try tonight.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Bob,
I plugged the Ethernet directly into my Imac, clicked on DHCP, and I was connected.  Plugged my airport express back in, unplugged cord from computer back to airport express, waited for green light on airport, tried to connect to my network, unable to get to the Internet.  Wifi was on, just not able to connect to the internet.
So, I unplugged again, plugged ethernet cord into computer, back on the internet.
Puzzled.  Airport seems to be working fine, amber light when first plugged in, green light after a few minutes.
Tried plugging in airport to comcast modem, reset modem, waited 5 minutes, tried to connect to internet, not able to do so.
Airport utility says airport express is fine.
needless to say, Im at a high level of frustration.  Never ever had a problem this bad.
wondered if I unplugged airport express for 24 hours, then tried again, hoping it would clear out any memory on board and start the whole process of creating a new network over again.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks by the way.
    George

  • Connecting my XP laptop to Airport Express at the same time as my iBook

My XP laptop recognizes my apple network. Everything works up until the point where i'm asked to provide the WEP password. When i type in my password, it doesn't work and lets me know that it must be in either "5 alphanumeric characters or 10 hexadecimal digits" format.
I think I simply need to reconfigure my Airport Express, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to reconfigure it so that it will accept the connection from my windows laptop.
Please please help before I got out and buy something I don't need. Thank you very much in advance.

  • Connecting a Windows XP PC wireless laptop to Airport Express

I have a Windows XP PC with wireless connected to a Linksys router G. I would like to attach a USB canon pixma IP6700D printer to my Airport Express via USB and then print to that printer from any of my PC's on my Linksys network. How do I do this?
    Thanks in advance.

For how to print to an USB printer attached to an AirPort Base Station, check out the following articles:
    - http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1004.html
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. A quick look at the iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility List doesn't show this particular model. This doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
