Connecting Yamaha keyboard to iMac through Midi

Help!!
I am trying to connect my keyboard to my iMac (10.5.8) for GarageBand. It is going from Midi out to USB. I went into the Utilities pane and saw the keyboard there. I went into GarageBand under preferences and it stated that it detected 1 midi device - however I can not hear it. There is no option in the drop down menu for me to select it. I downloaded the driver for the M-Audio cable I am using and installed it. That didn't seem to make a difference.
Any suggestions?

make sure the controller is connected to the interface correctly:

You'd have to pair the BT keyboard with iMac; they

  • Connecting Yamaha keyboard with MIDI cable?

So, I have a Yahama YPT-320 portable keyboard and would love to start recording some music through GarageBand. I know you need a MIDI cable, and I was wondering if this one works with iMac at GarageBand? The seller says that it works with Mac and PC, but one of the reviews says that it doesn't work with Mac? Any ideas would be appreciated!!! :) Thanks.

Interesting timing...  I just received the MIDI/USB adapter you mentioned and am having problems with it.  (Mine was $5.85 including shipping on eBay.)  Do you get the same results as me?
Details: MacBook Pro 13"; OS X Lion; Garage Band '11 v6.0.4; circa-2002 Yamaha DGX-500 Portable Grand keyboard; adapter USB to Mac; adapter MIDI "OUT" connector to keyboard MIDI "OUT" connector.  Adapter red LED is on continuously.  Adapter yellow LED flutters dimly continuously (questionable...) and flashes bright whenever any keyboard key is pressed.  But as I hit all white keys from low to high, only about every 10th key is recognized by Garage Band.
I am not a MIDI expert and was starting to look into this.  My keyboard supports "GM System Level 1" and I was just reading the details of what that means.  But if you confirm it behaves like this for you, I will just go with a different adapter.

  • Connecting yamaha psr-292 to my iMac for midi

I have never worked with midi or GarageBand and I want to start. I have an old Yamaha PSR-292 keyboard with a 6-pin MIDI-IN port and a 6-pin MIDI-OUT port.
My iMac has three USB ports.
I'm at the beginning of this and just trying to figure out how to connect my Yamaha to my iMac so I can play a piano piece on the Yamaha and record it into GarageBand and create a CD. Right now I'm not looking to mix or do anything other than play a standard piano piece and make a CD of it.
Is the connecting as simple as buying a specific cord with two 6-pin heads on one end and a USB head on the other? Can anybody advise a complete newcomer?
Also if you want to suggest websites that would help me, I appreciate it. I'm not being lazy about this; I HAVE looked on-line and couldn't find the answer to this question. Thank you.

  • Edirol Audio/Midi Interface and Yamaha Keyboard

    Hi everybody,
I just got an Edirol Audio/Midi interface UA-20, installed correctly with latest drivers, garage band recognizes it. Now I want to connect my old Yamaha PSR SQ16 keyboard through it, but somehow it doesn't work. Can anybody please give me a guidance on how to connect it properly, maybe i'm too dumb for that...
    Thanks for any help!

I'm shure you must have already figured this out, becouse it's very simple thing to do, but I'll post my answer anyway, perhaps someone else has the same problem.
The Yamaha PSR SQ16 has a "MIDI OUT" plug, in the back of the sinthetizer. To connect with de UA20 Edirol, all you need to do is to get a midi cable (you can find it in every music store) and plug the Yamaha PSR SQ16 MIDI OUT to the Edirol UA20 MIDI IN.
    And boy, that's it.
All the fantastic sounds and samples that cames with Garageband, are now triggerd through your Yamaha PSR SQ16.
Things to check: in the AUDIO MIDI UTILITY, be shure that the UA20 is set as de midi in out device.
In Preferences of Garageband, be shure to check that the UA20 is set as audio and midi interface.
    Hope this be helpfull.
I apologise for my english, it isn't my first language.

  • Connecting Yamaha CVP303 Electric Piano to iMac

The iMac and Garageband are both very new to me. My kids are all piano players so I thought it would be great for them to discover work with Garageband and connect our Yamaha to our iMac. I understand that I can use a Yamaha UX16 midi interface cable to connect the iMac to the piano, however the cable is only 6 feet long which is about 10 feet to short. I am not able to relocate either the iMac or the piano.
My question is whether there is a way to extend this cable or if there is another interface cable that will work.
    Thanks!

I would rather connect via wireless too.
you'll drive them nuts, the latency would be unbearable.

  • Output only through midi keyboard

I have a midi keyboard plugged into my computer using m-Audio's midisport 2x2. i was trying to get playback from logic to speakers becides the ones in the keyboard, but i haven't had any luck. normal system sounds are good, and so is garageband. however if i change the instrument in logic, I get the midi sound that i just chose through the speakers, but also the sound the keyboard plays normally. i.e. i choose drums on logic and get both drum sounds and piano sounds from the keyboard. ive looked through the help, and tried searching through the forums, but could not find how to change it.

let me try to update my question:
I cannot get sound out of my system speakers. i can tell the midi keyboard is working because I can hear the sound of the program coming out of the midi keyboard. (the keyboard is very basic and has no midi controls) even if i use the built-in input, it does not give me sound. my thought is its a problem with the settings in the program, and it just wont play sound through the computer until I change it

  • Connecting A Keyboard With a MIDI Cable

I have connected my keyboard to my laptop with a MIDI cable, and the sustain pedal makes a noise throught the computer whenever I push it down. What to do?

I don't know much about sequencers. But maybe a concept from the "raw audio" world would help. Riven's comment in this thread is what is most pertinent:
    http://www.java-gaming.org/topics/reliable-sound-playing/26104/view.html
How are MIDI sounds launched? Are you doing them singly? Or can they be placed in the context of a running sequence, running timeline? If the latter can be done, then you have a better chance of accuracy.
There's also a link, in that thread, to a good article about timing issues for audio, in my first post there.
It might be helpful to enqueue the MIDI events as they arrive, with a timestamp, and use the timestamps when calculating when to feed them to the Sequencer. But as I said, I could be way off, as I haven't worked with MIDI in Java yet, and don't know if that even fits the model of how things are done.
But it's not like you've gotten a lot of help here from anyone else, yet...
    You might try StackOverflow forums.
