  • DVI monitor connection better than/equal to/worse than analog connectivity?

Is there a real difference, or just .... ?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi-
That's comparing apples to grapes. Digital and analog are completely different, and people will have opinions favoring either.
Opinions aside, digital (using DVI) is generally accepted as providing a more accurate, thus superior, image, as opposed to analog.
Though DVI and the accompanying digital signal don't require the necessary conversion required to create the analog signal, a quality graphics card will provide a quality analog signal for an analog monitor.
What a DVI connection does, is to pass directly to the monitor, the digital signal, with minimal processing. If the Monitor is digital/analog capable, it can also receive analog signal. If it is CRT, then it requires analog. Creating the analog signal from the computers digital signal requires conversion of the digital signal. With quality graphics cards and analog receivers, a monitors performance should not suffer. There is always some loss during conversion, and whether or not the differences are noticeable, depend on the equipment.
Whether or not the differences are objectionable, often times depends on the viewer.

  • Is ethernet connection better than wireless

Is ethernet a bettter connection for Apple TV rather than wireless, or is there no difference?

There is no difference if both are working as they should, but wifi is more prone to not working properly.
Neither is faster when used in conjunction with the Apple TV, both will be limited to the speed at which the Apple TV can write the data you send it.
If it wasn't for the limitation of the data write speed, wifi would be faster because the Apple TV only supports base 10/100 ethernet, which is slower than 802.11n wifi. Although in reality there are a lot more factors to consider.
Use ethernet if you are able without too much effort, otherwise wifi should be fine (issues excepted)

  • Fios Internet connection is very bad! Please help!

    Hello,
I play an online game called Final Fantasy XIV.  I use a program called WTFast in order to have a solid gaming experience, one without or very little lag or disconnects.
Recently, within the last 3-4months, I have noticed I get EXTREME lag and DISCONNECTS.  I contacted WTFast with a tracert that they analyzed, and here is their response:
"Your internet connection is very bad. There is a "plateau" spike. This will cause WTFast to spike as well, and for such a long "spike" it is not surprising that the connection was dropped.
The previous report showed a very unstable internet connection as well (the one where you got a 30 second freeze).
Present the same reports you sent to us to your ISP (Verizon FIOS) and ask them to try to make their connection better. The report will help them see the quality of the current connection."
Here is the information in the more readable form (except for the last four as I figured you would probably get the idea by then). Yes, 4 shows 100% packet loss, so the connection dropped then. Also, in 5 the standard deviation is high (16.35 ms) which indicates a huge fluctuation in the signal. The flux column also shows large numbers, which indicates a large variance in the signal speed. Finally, there are a lot of hops just within the ISP, ie rows 2-8, and all this data is for the ISP itself, not the WTFast connection. In fact, that connection is the last one, and there you can see good numbers. Hope this helps.

I did a tracert from my computer to sites like MSN.com; Verizon.com etc, and EVERY SINGLE 4 shows a 100% loss.  I did the same tracert from my computer at work that uses a different IP provider, and those same sites show a response from 4.
Can anyone help me out with this please!  Thank you for reading!

  • Ibook G4 having  problem with airport connection when using secure network

    Hi,
I am currently using a brand new Macbook. I am connected wirelessly to a Comcast network through my Netgear Wireless-N 150 router model WNR 1000. The problem I am having is with the 4 year old ibook when I go to use the airport and connect to my existing network it says the password is incorrect. I spent time troubleshooting this with Netgear and basically we found out that the ibook does connect with the network when there is no security at all.
I erased the hard drive on this ibook to prepare it for sale and it is back to the factory settings. Is there some kind of firmware or drivers I am missing to use the airport as described?? I want to be able to show the buyer that the internet works etc. I also may want to install a few things on the ibook before the sale.
    Thanks a mil

Did you reset the wireless router to see if by default, it has a different
wireless security then, than however it presently is set up?
The question you pose appears to be marked "answered or solved."
When you reinstall an OS X, the setup asks if you have an existing
wireless connection, or if you will be getting a new one; by default,
the setup will make the existing one the automatic one for OS X.
You should not have to add passwords or other, unless there has
been one set in KeyChain or for the specific wireless base in question.
Tiger 10.4.x does not require you to have a set password for wi-fi,
but you will find several levels of secure options available in OS X.
Not sure why your setup and configuration is problematic. Usually,
a totally new OS X installation is without issue. Sometimes, you
may have to administer a base station via Ethernet cable before
some configurations can use it, but an existing network should be
easy, unless it already has a password security in place.
    The Mac will work without a password-protected wi-fi internet source;
often it will 'just work' even when moved to a new environment and
a neighbor's network, if not password protected, will appear among
other options in your vicinity and it will be automatically available.
Not sure if any newer OS X update parts, from the Combo update
files to take Tiger 10.4 to 10.4.11, plus others, would help the Mac
connect better to whatever wireless source of internet available.
I've not had that issue, as you state, except for when someone has
a protected network or passwords in place. Mine has passwords to
keep unauthorized neighbors from easy access; just in case.
In remote locations where few neighbors exist who could access wi-fi
from a lone source, no wireless security settings at all, work just fine.
I've done that; and found a little greater range was gained in signals.
And in the city (largest town in state) a computer I'd set up for use in
a password protected wi-fi network - later worked fine and found the
new owner's own wi-fi network without issues; and I had let the OSX
setup assistant do its job. If a local network is protected by WEP or
WPA2, etc with a password, one would be needed to access it. If not,
then the connection should be automatic.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Problem - keep getting an intermittent connection (wired connection)

For the last few months our internet connection has been completely intermittent. Some days it will work perfectly fine all day long, other days like today it will disconnect / reconnect every 30 seconds - 5 minutes. I tried doing Live Chat several times and most of the times I can't even get through their questions before my net disconnects. One time I did manage to let them take over control of my computer to "fix" the problems, and at that given moment it worked. But literally as soon as the person disconnected from my computer my net died again.
Part of our setup uses Vonage, which means if the internet does not work our phone doesn't work. I hardly think Vonage is the problem because it works perfectly fine other days. Same goes with the Verizon people saying gaming can effect it which shouldn't be a problem either. I've tried to use my cell to call them but as soon as I go downstairs to mess with the modem / router my phone loses service.
It seems like this is a day to day problem. Last night my internet was perfectly fine, today it keeps disconnecting. Power cycles fix the problem for a few seconds to a few minutes, and letting it reset itself does the same thing. As i'm typing this post my internet has disconnected several times. I can't seem to figure out the problem and need some advice.

*All of that repeated SEVERAL times from 15:26 - 15:31*

    SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream):23/12
    Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream):18/12
I think those are the numbers you are talking about. At this moment in time my internet is working fine today, but that doesn't mean by later today/tonight or tomorrow it will be acting the same. Since it's an ongoing problem I'd like to try and fix whatever may be causing it anyway.
I'll have to figure out how exactly our lines are configured before describing them, but i'll try and give you the entire setup of our network at least. So here it goes:
Our setup is in the basement:
    Modem/Router - Actiontec GT704WG
No filter coming from main phone line to modem (Is this supposed to be filtered?)
    Ethernet 1 -> Vonage -> Motorola VT2542-VD
-Phone line from Vonage goes to "Multi-line" box (I'm not sure if it is a filter itself..)
-From the multi-line 2 separate phone lines coming off with filters
-Those 2 connect into 2 possible filters, that connect into spiltters for the lines through the house.
    House Phones:
-1st Floor - Kitchen phone is a regular phone (no filter)
-1st Floor - Living room has a 5.8GHz portable (no filter)
-1st Floor - Sun room has a portable set from the 5.8GHz
-2nd Floor - My room has a portable set from the 5.8GHz
-2nd Floor - Office has a regular phone (no filter)
-2nd Floor - Bedroom has 2 regular phones (no filters)
(I'm guessing the house phones don't need filters directly because they are already filtered?)
Ethernet 2 - My room, connection goes into a Linksys 10/100 5-port workgroup switch (model: EZXS55W). PS3, 360, and PC all wired connections to the switch.
Ethernet 3 - Brother's room, connection goes to his laptop (he doesn't use it wirelessly much in the house)
Ethernet 4 - Office room, connection goes to laptop (not used wirelessly either.)
Besides having an extremely complicated set of lines, I was wondering if the length of ALL the Ethernet and Phone lines matter? Also I read in the other topic that if they don't have Xbox / Playstation they should disable UPnP, and since I do, should i actually ENABLE it? I know that's un-related to my problem but if it makes online gaming connections better i'll do it. I used to have Static IP's for my PS3 / 360 / PC and "rules" setup that supposedly opened the Ports to make them better online but I didn't really notice any increased speeds when downloading off them or playing online.
If I need to provide more info please let me know. Or what should be the next step I take....

I tried this with with an Office 365 Education tenant and an Office 365 Small Business tenant with the same result. From the release notes it appears some MFA-related changes were made. The Education tenant uses federated authentication, but MFA is not enabled
in either tenant I tested with.
Uninstalling the new version and installing the previous version (8262.2 released 2014-12-11) works fine.
    Dave Beauvais

I fixed this issue by installing the previous Azure AD PowerShell Module version to 8262.2. Follow this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/28552.microsoft-azure-active-directory-powershell-module-version-release-history.aspx
Use the (get-item [...]) command to see your version. I was at 8362.1, went to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs (the PowerShell Azure Module), then installed the 64bit version from the link above. Afterwards, the connect-msolservice worked with my Global
    AAD O365 account.
I used the latest Azure AD Connect preview/beta version described here:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/ad/archive/2014/08/04/connecting-ad-and-azure-ad-only-4-clicks-with-azure-ad-connect.aspx. This version installed the latest, incompatible it seems, Azure AD PowerShell module while it installed all other dependencies on a Windows
Server 2012 R2. The PowerShell version on this machine is 4.0, which came with the Server 2012 R2 OS version.
But, on another machine running Windows Server 2012 and running PowerShell version 3.0, the same tool installed the previous, 8262.2 Azure AD PowerShell Module, which worked. I got lucky with this difference to notice the different versions. Strange.
Also, the original link from where I downloaded the Azure AD Connect beta tool here
https://connect.microsoft.com/site1164/program8612 doesn't seem to work right now - I get a strange web server standard type error page not formatted properly that says "The system has
encountered an unexpected error [...] etc."
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting Mac to Mac

Newbie question: I'm playing around with the Remote Desktop Connection beta and loving it. I'd like to know if there's a similar way to connect from my PowerBook to another Mac on my home network. I've been using VNC but its kinda clunky.
    Thanks!
    -=Tim=-

Not for the price. There is commercialware Timbuktu, but you need to buy two copies, one for each computer. And then there is Apple Remote Desktop Connection. These guys haven't figured out how much money they could make by selling single-client license versions of this thing for $49.95. Instead, they sell a 10-seat remote client license for over $300 and an unlimited-seat remote client license for over $400. Won't see me buying it. Won't see my work buying it for me, either.
How have you configured your VNC that makes you think its clunky? You know that there is a built-in VNC server capability in your Mac, and you don't need a third-party VNC server app, right? If you didn't know that, here's what to do:
On the VNC "server", if you go into SysPrefs Sharing and click on Firewall tab, then click on New, VNC is one of the options in the pull-down PortNames menu. When you select that, the TCP and UDP port info will quick-fill for you. Save it. VNC should now show up as enabled in the firewall list.
Then, click on SysPrefs Sharing Services tab. Highlight/select Apple Remote Desktop and check the checkbox for ARD, too. Click on Access Privileges (this button appears when ARD is highlighted/selected/checked). Configure the top half however suits you, and check the "VNC viewers may control screen with password" checkbox. Enter a password, and remember it for a later step.
Save all these changes and then quit System Prefs. Install the Chicken of the VNC freeware on the other "client" computer. The password you entered above when setting up the server is the password you'll use for your CotVNC connection.
Within your own home LAN, this setup should be pretty fast, and not clunky. Not as fast and "clunkless" as M$ RDC, though. But not bad.
My experience with third-party VNC servers, albeit several years ago, on the other hand, was not impressive in the least. Using the VNC-over-ARD server capability already built into your Mac is hands-down better than any existing third-party VNC server applications that I know about.
Just remember, though, that this is not encrypted or secured in any way, shape, matter, or form. Not an issue within your home LAN, assuming you are using WPA-2 or WPA or other 802.11 transec protocol. But, passing VNC over the internet at large is not secure at all and is done in the clear. Don't do VNC over the internet at large unless you know how to tunnel VNC inside ssh (secure shell). If you don't know how, well, that's another topic for another day. There are numerous posts in this forum that discuss how to do that with Terminal and CotVNC and this ARD/VNC setup on the server computer, and of course, you can always post back requesting further info about that.

  • Connectivity problems on ATM MPLS network

We have implemented a country wide MPLS network based on 8500 platforms. We have encountered some strange connectivity problems between some PE's. Without apparent reason connectivity is lost between some PEs and restored after some time. The global routing table is perfectly stable among all the routers on the path between respective PE's. Also the LVC's & TAGs are stable and practically we were unable to find any change between the working and not working state. As a curious thing, during the outage (minutes) clearing routes into a PE VRF was restoring connectivity on the respective VRF and all other VRFs on the respective PE also!
Has enyone seeing similar problems before?
PE routers are 3660 series and we've tried all IOS available on CCO.

Have you made any provisioning (upgrading connectivity) bet the PEs and Ps....I suffer such a similar problem with our network PEs and I notice that this happen after provisioning links between our PEs (RPMs in MGX 8850) and the ATM LSR (BPX 8600).
when i issue "clear ip route vrf *" or reload the RPM.....all the VRFs operate normally again.....so I get used to such a problem after any network provisioning process but still i couldn't relate this to problems with VRFs.

  • Connecting Windows to Mac's

I have recently installed a Mac G5, power book and a Mac Mini in addition to a Windows PC. I have a wireless Network and that works fine as far as Mac’s seeing my windows machine.
I am having some difficulty with the Windows machine seeing the Mac’s. I have found the only way I can do this is as follows.
    Go to My Network Places.
    Add a Network Place.
    Choose another Network Location.
Then I have to type in the IP address of the Mac I wish to access.
This all works but as the IP address’s are assigned dynamically if I start the Mac’s in a different order they will get different addresses and then the names and passwords will be incorrect. Is there an easier way of doing this?
    Thanks
    Mitch

I am also trying to get a Windows/Apple net to work. I was forwearded to this page:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107083
which helps a lot- gets windows file sharing up. DO NOT FORGET TO GET ALL WORKGROUP NAMES THE SAME... and make sure to change Apple and MS comps from default "Workgroup" default name...
I am having another problem, and I thought I would bounce this off you, and see if you have any ideas.
I have an existing Microsoft network, and my iMac is joining into that. I have gotten in and set up Windows File Sharing, workgroup names, etc- all seems fine. It is a "g" wireless network, and has high connectivity- all looks good there.
I have 4 computers in the network. I have one computer, MEDIA, which is my media computer, and holds all my music files. I have a lot, mostly in WAV format (which is large- 50 megs or so a song). I set up iTunes to see the music directory on MEDIA (Though I use another computer to "manage" the music).
So, my problem is that these files seem to big for the Apple network to handle- I get "rebuffering" and audio drops every 15-20 seconds. (Perhaps I should also note I did set iTunes buffer to Large in Prefs). As a test, I moved a WAV from MEDIA to WIN-1, and tried to play on Apple- same problem.
As a further test, I played a WAV from MEDIA on Apple, and got the drops. Concurrently, I started playing the SAME WAV on LAPTOP- it played fine, O skips at all. So I added WIN-2 playing the SAME WAV (so, now Apple, WIN-2 and LAPTOP ALL playing the same song, slightly staggered) All Windoze computers played fine, with no drops; the Apple was silent more than played.
Now things are better playing mp3's- but I still notice 1-2 drops per song.
Now this might not be noticed when surfing the web or e-mail, but with audio, it is pretty obvious there is some problem in my network. At least as far as the Apple is concerned. I would think there should be more "headroom" in the "g" wireless network than to choke on a streaming WAV file- it does show a full 54mbs connect.
Any ideas of things I can try to make the connect better?
    Thanks!
    Dave

  • Physical problem connecting 2nd gen. iPod

I have a 2nd generation iPod from April (or March) 2003 -- yeah, I made my purchase about a month early! Well, it was great for well over five years. But at the end of 2008, I began to have problems getting it to connect. When I would plug in the Firewire cable, the iPod might go into disk mode (and begin charging), but the check mark wouldn't go away. The only way I could get it to connect was to apply pressure to the plug. Then I would have to hold it in until the iPod ejected.
I acquired a new iPod (a "Classic"), so it's not a big deal if I can't resolve the problem the older one is having, but I'm curious and would like to see if the firmware is as up-to-date as it can get and if iTunes 8.1.1 does any better transferring data to the older iPod than it does with the Classic. Just "scientific" experimentation, I guess.
The problem is that I've edited a lot of music since I last synced the old iPod and I don't wish to stand still and hold the firewire plug in that long. And if I let go, the computer will stop seeing it. Is there any way I can gently pull the port back in place? (The sound quality of the headphone jack is iffy, too.)

    Kenichi Watanabe wrote:
The problem you describe just sounds like the FireWire port on the iPod is worn out or the soldered connections to the logic board are not fully secure.
One thing you should try is to use another (newer) FireWire 400 cable. There is nothing special about the original thin cable that came with the iPod. So hopefully, the connector that is worn and not connecting properly is on the cable side. Or perhaps a less used cable will connect better with a somewhat worn FireWire connector on the iPod.
If the problem is the connection between the iPod's FireWire port and the logic board, then it will be difficult to repair.
    Thank you for your response.
It's not a big deal, as I'm happy with my iPod Classic and the better range of accessories I can use with it, save the fact that iTunes tends to corrupt files as it transfers them. I've already tried two different FireWire cables -- the original, thin, one, and a thicker one -- but while either will charge the iPod and put it into disk mode, neither allows the computer to recognize the iPod unless I press down. I was hoping I could use needle-nose pliers to try to pull the iPod's port back up without damaging the connectors.
(I'm might try it, anyway, considering I don't really need it.)

  • Beta to DVD

I found a few discusssions that sort of addressed this issue, but I still have questions.
I need to capture several short PAL Beta tapes and put them on DVD with menus. The producer wants to keep the captured files for future use as well.
    Here's my work flow:
Connect Beta deck to AJA io; capture to FCP-5 8 bit uncompressed. Then, I'd line it up in FCP and drop the sequence into compressor and convert to mpeg-2 pal for DVD (Using DVD Studio Pro).
I would save the 8 bit Uncompressed files to my Lacie Big Disk FW 800 drive.
Does this sound right? These tapes are 30 years old so is there a big difference between 8 bit and 10 bit - besides the size? For 8 bit using AJA, going through firewire, what is my "easy setup"? How much hard drive space should I expect for 5 hours of Beta footage?
    Thanks!
    G5, Dual 1.8, 2 gigs RAM, OS 10.4.6
Firewire 800 Lacie 500 gig drive
    FCP 5 Studio
    AJA io
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Here's a payback reply for answering my last post
8-bit uncompressed with a Kona is about 20.3 MB a sec. I captured a 34 minute clip today and it is 41.4 GB in size. so you'd be looking at 450-500 GB to store 5 hours.
Oh and FYI, don't export your SEQ from FCP directly to Compressor. Make a QT reference movie by exporting SEQ as QUIKTIME MOVIE, do not select MAKE SELF CONTAINED. Save the reference file to a drive and then open Compressor and drag that file in. It will encode MUCH faster and free up FCP for other projects while the encode is being done.

  • Device IS paired with the MacBook (white on 10.5.5) but won't connect?

Here is the deal- we have two MacBook Pros (one on 10.4.11 and the other on 10.5.4) and one MacBook (on 10.5.5) and all can see and be paired with the Nokia 6220 classic (mobile phone) but the MacBook refuses connection.
Now, I am not used to all this pairing malarky- I remember when your bluetooth device was found and connected automatically "just like that" back in the good old days. I cannot figure out why, if paired successfully, the MacBook will not just connect.
I am assuming that "pairing" is just the security formality between two devices and that IT relies on the ability of two devices to see each other.
So- if that was performed successfully (and it was) and the Nokia's bluetooth is on and working (was able to send a file to the MacBook Pro with 10.5.4 in the same room as a test) and so is the MacBook's bluetooth (it sent a file to the MacBook Pro as well) then where is the problem?
Notably- the drop down list of the MacBook we are trying to send files to shows three devices and I am assuming that this is like "favourites"? One of the devices on the drop down IS the Nokia 6220 classic mobile phone but it is the one which does not have options (ie a further drop down menu) but the one MacBook Pro we DID send to doesn't even show up on it!
I am completely lost- I would like to understand pairing and connecting better, and be able to resolve this because the Bluetooth Help files do not deal with this and the manual/site I was directed to did not address this.
    Thank you for reading.

Well, both iSync and Bluetooth File Transfers use the same Bluetooth hardware and system software, so it could've been related to your issue...
Anyway, as it works with some Macs, maybe there is some differences between those Macs?
Have you compared the Bluetooth hardware in the Apple System Profiler between the Macs that work, and the Mac that doesn't?
Most Macs with built-in Bluetooth use the CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) chipset, but I've seen some (usually more recent Macs) now have a Broadcom chipset.
In the past, the CSR chipset was always more compatible with other devices. If buying an external BT adapter it was always recommended to get one with the CSR chipset, rather than Broadcom.
If Apple have switched BT chip suppliers, you would hope that the new chip is as compatible as the earlier one. But maybe if the BT chips are different between the working and non-working Mac that could be a potential source of the problem. If so, it's likely to require a Bluetooth system software update from Apple to fix.

  • Http tunnel connection unexpectedly closes

    Hi,
I'm trying to ichat to work on an imac connected to a coporate network. I'm trying to connect through a proxy and keep getting the error "http tunnel connection unexpectedly closes".
My .mac account is set to connect through a proxy on port 80 using the http protocol.

    Hi,
Can I suggest you ask here about the HTTP tunnel issue.
I have never used iChat this way and think you need to solve that first.
I do know that iChat manages Proxy connections better if pointed to using the System Preferences Settings (Network > Advanced Button)
